It's an excellent school because of class size, which made professor accessibility easier. I got my Associates Degree there and they do have many programs to choose from. Sometimes parking was an issue due to the times that most students attend class. Parking would be its only drawback.

Virginia Western Community College is an amazing school. The teachers are very qualified and very knowledgeable. The Campus is very easy to navigate. The campus is very diverse. The faculty and staff are very helpful. The only bad thing about this school is that there are far more faculty/staff parking spaces than there are members of faculty/staff, which means students have to park much farther away.

Virginia Western is a great stepping stone for students who wish to transfer to a four year school. It provides small class sizes and a personal learning environment. If you finish your degree with a 3.0 GPA, you are guaranteed acceptance into a number of larger public schools.

  5. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The naked truth: I loved Virginia Western. It was my home for two years (I did practically live on campus). There were more then a few times I caught up on a nap on a sofa in the bridge. It is a fantastic school and one of the best decisions I feel I have ever made. I met so many cool people, of all ages, in my classes and just around campus. Everyone was friendly and helpful and I believe that is because we all shared the same goal: to make a better life for ourselves. Although I have moved on to another university, Virginia Western will always be my first college and some of the best memories of my time in college were spent there.

  7. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

That is totally false! If anything, we take our education more seriously! The stigma attached to community colleges is fading away as more and more students realize what a great idea it is to attend a cheaper college for two years. Many Western students have families, jobs and other responsibilities that make it difficult to attend a 4 year university right away, but that doesn't stop us! We take our education just as seriously as any other student because we too want to succeed.

  8. What are the academics like at your school?

I really loved all my professors at Western. Some people might expect to see lesser qualified professors working at a community college, but this is just not true. The class sizes are relatively small, my largest class being 40 people. This makes the class much more personal because your professors will learn your names and you become closer that way. The classes were so challenging, all of them. But the work load is evenly balanced and the professors are SO helpful. I never had a class at Western in the two years I attended where a professor was not available for help outside of class. In fact, most teachers insist you make appointments for extra help. They want you to pass, but they will make you work for it. I feel like I got a top notch education and learned a lot from my professors and class mates.

  9. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

For a community college, Virginia Western always seemed to have something going on for everyone. Often there were banquets, club meetings, and theater productions happening at the same time. There is always something going on for everyone. I really liked that because it kept options open. Western is a great place to meet lots of cool, new people.

  11. What is your overall opinion of this school?

I love Virginia Western and I will miss it so much. I have moved on to another university, but will always think of Western as my first college experience. The teachers are phenomenal, you could not ask for a better education. They are all very intelligent and challenge their student's. Virginia Western also has one of the most beautifully maintained campuses I have ever seen. My favorite thing to do was to eat lunch with a friend in the garden, or meet up in the lounge area watch some tv and drink coffee. It is a fantastic school that is totally student orientated and they do an amazing job making the place as comfortable as possible for everyone.

  12. What kind of person should attend this school?

I believe the type of person who should attend this college is someone who really isn't ready for a 4 year college yet out of high school. Someone who still has alot to figure out mentally should chose this school as their first option. It has helped me discover abilities of the things I never knew I was so great at! The type of person who wants to save money and be less stressed. You get to live at home and not have to worry about food, shelter, or unconditional love and suppot from your parents.

  14. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

I think that the most frustrating thing about my school are some of the students that go there. Some students go to my college and act like it is just something to occupy their time. The students are loud and do not have any respect for the other students that have worked hard to get to where they are in college. Those students need to be told to keep quiet and have respect for the students that are trying hard to get a good education and be respectful of the teachers that are trying to teach.

  15. What's the dating scene like?

Dating couples are actually very respectful with each other. It's very rare to see two people slumped over one another and display a massive amount of PDA. I also noticed that couples encourage each other to study hard by studying outside of class together and working in the library alongside of each other. For the most part, I believe that the couples at Virginia Western Community College take their relationships as encouragement more than a distraction.

  17. Where is the best place to get work done on campus?

The best place to get things done is at the library of Virginia Western. You can have individual rooms that cater to group studies or group discussions, or you could simply work diligently on your own in the quiet third floor. The second floor has more computers and it's a little bit more chatty because there are tutors who are helping some students with their classes. It's also become somewhat like a hang-out place for many studious students but it remains to be a very relaxed, hard-working atmosphere. It is very encouraging to see other students work. It makes you want to work too!

  18. Why did you decide to go to this school?

There was a private college that I had a lot of scholarships for but my family is very financially unfortunate and despite the good amount of scholarships I received from that school, we were still not able to pay the remaining tuition even though I wasn't going to live in the campus. My family decided to send me to a community college, and I didn't like the idea at first but I wanted to comply with my parents' wants to make life easier for them. They then enrolled me at the best community college near our area, and it was Virginia Western Community College. I don't regret being enrolled at all for I have come to love the school and the people in it. More power to VWCC!

  19. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Before college I was so scared about the tests and projects and papters. All of my fears were put aside after my first test though. As long as I do all the assigned work I get a decent grade in my classes. However, if I do more than just what's required, then I get great grades in college!
