I am a third year at Old Dominion University. I have only ever commuted to college. When I was a freshman my schedule was to attend ODU every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am till 5 am. The following year, I started to take online classes, which were good, but very challenging to get used to. I carpooled with a friend which helped a lot with money. ODU is a good school, but if I was an on campus student I would love college. It is just challenging to be included in events when I live off campus.

It's beautiful at Old Dominion and there are a lot of really fun and interesting activities. They try to get students involved and are constantly having on-campus events to encourage students to step out of their comfort zone. However, the advising isn't great and the academics are more relaxed than I'm used to.

Old Dominion University is the perfect place for any student! The University is supportive of incoming freshmen, transfer students, military students (they have a whole email list for military-affiliated students!), as well as returners to the post-secondary education world. The campus is inclusive, and ODU makes a conscious effort to create dialogue among a variety of demographic and special interest groups. For example, the Office of Educational Accessibility has great resources for students transitioning from their high school setting, where they perhaps had an IEP or 504 plan, to college. The athletics program is on the rise at ODU as well! The brand new Ballard Stadium was just built, and the stands are always roaring with cheers from fans. The athletics program also has great resources for student athletes, such as peer tutors and mentors. The University has recently added several new dining halls and residence halls to accommodate for the increase in enrollment. Overall, I would recommend ODU to anyone who is interested in the area, their specific programs, or a solid college experience. They have a variety of majors and programs, and the academic advisors have been incredibly helpful from my experience. You can't really go wrong being a Monarch!

Academically and socially ODU is the place to be. The people are some what nice same with the professors. The biggest problem ODU has is money. They have money to give and don't give it which leaves kids who really need it in the dust and that is not fair.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at ODU. The diversity there is hard to beat. I've really liked 95% of my professors, the ones that I have had were all cool people who had a passion for both their subjects and teaching, knew what they were talking about and made class interesting. There is more than enough food options on campus with or without a meal plan. The housing in the newer buildings is really good and in the older building is still good but not as good. There's plenty to do on and off campus, especially if you know the right people. Overall I learned a lot and had a lot fun at ODU.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

First and foremost, I valued my time and the education I earned from ODU as an Alumnus (2016). Things may have changed since I was last enrolled; but an often annoying conversation to have, has to do with parking. I was a commuter and parking was a common problem well before I ever enrolled to ODU. Parking Permits are offered but do not guarantee a parking space. I have been late to many of my classes due to endlessly circling parking garages to find a free space. Worst case, I would try to sneak into parking spaces that was not intended for student parking for a 50 minute lecture. I’m praying that the parking garage detainers don’t make their rounds on time to see my car. Unfortunately, in some instances—I couldn’t afford a new parking decal initially due to required classroom materials that were mandatory at the beginning of each semester. $100 on a parking pass or 2 books that I’m required to have (which I’ve ultimately never used and still passed my classes). I’ve parked in spots without my decal and yes, I was fined. I paid for parking 2-4 hours at a time. I’ve parked across Kellam Ave. in very questionable areas, just to avoid campus people writing me a ticket. Unfortunately, Norfolk PD spotted my car’s back bumper a foot too far into a drive way and yes—I got a ticket. In total, I think I have paid approx. over $300 in ticket fines. You might be thinking “Why haven’t you learned your lesson yet?” I did and I went as far as borrowing orange construction cones and placing them in parking spots for people to avoid—which ultimately worked in my favor until the cones were gone. I’ve parked by the gas station where overflow parking, praying that 30 minutes of torrential rain does not come before it floods the lot. In realty, it did. I was one of the art & design majors, which meant I carried a book bag filled with my text books of other classes, my laptop, a makeshift tackle box that carried my art supplies, and a large 20” x 30” portfolio bag that kept my drawings, prints, and other materials dry. Having to park blocks down to avoid a ticket wasn’t fun, especially at night when walking back made me feel on high alert. At some point, I am sure someone in or around the campus had thought about robbing me, which could have been easily done with all the stuff I was carrying. Fortunately that never happened but unfortunately, my phone alerted me about incidents involving other students being robbed at gun point. Parking is an annoying subject to bring up and everyone is on board with it but not a whole lot has been done to address it; at least not since I was enrolled. I empathize with the idea that student enrollment will continue to increase yearly and spending money on parking spaces will not solve the issue. Although, the football stadium is a huge cash cow for investment on campus. In fairness, tons of money has been donated into rebuilding Foreman field because it attracts revenue. It makes sense that this stadium has a higher priority for development because of projected return of investments. The question I have is; what is the return of investment of parking? It is a common complaint that many have had for years that doesn’t seem to have a real solution, except to write more fines and charge students.
