First and foremost, I valued my time and the education I earned from ODU as an Alumnus (2016). Things may have changed since I was last enrolled; but an often annoying conversation to have, has to do with parking. I was a commuter and parking was a common problem well before I ever enrolled to ODU. Parking Permits are offered but do not guarantee a parking space. I have been late to many of my classes due to endlessly circling parking garages to find a free space. Worst case, I would try to sneak into parking spaces that was not intended for student parking for a 50 minute lecture. I’m praying that the parking garage detainers don’t make their rounds on time to see my car. Unfortunately, in some instances—I couldn’t afford a new parking decal initially due to required classroom materials that were mandatory at the beginning of each semester. $100 on a parking pass or 2 books that I’m required to have (which I’ve ultimately never used and still passed my classes). I’ve parked in spots without my decal and yes, I was fined. I paid for parking 2-4 hours at a time. I’ve parked across Kellam Ave. in very questionable areas, just to avoid campus people writing me a ticket. Unfortunately, Norfolk PD spotted my car’s back bumper a foot too far into a drive way and yes—I got a ticket. In total, I think I have paid approx. over $300 in ticket fines. You might be thinking “Why haven’t you learned your lesson yet?” I did and I went as far as borrowing orange construction cones and placing them in parking spots for people to avoid—which ultimately worked in my favor until the cones were gone. I’ve parked by the gas station where overflow parking, praying that 30 minutes of torrential rain does not come before it floods the lot. In realty, it did. I was one of the art & design majors, which meant I carried a book bag filled with my text books of other classes, my laptop, a makeshift tackle box that carried my art supplies, and a large 20” x 30” portfolio bag that kept my drawings, prints, and other materials dry. Having to park blocks down to avoid a ticket wasn’t fun, especially at night when walking back made me feel on high alert. At some point, I am sure someone in or around the campus had thought about robbing me, which could have been easily done with all the stuff I was carrying. Fortunately that never happened but unfortunately, my phone alerted me about incidents involving other students being robbed at gun point. Parking is an annoying subject to bring up and everyone is on board with it but not a whole lot has been done to address it; at least not since I was enrolled. I empathize with the idea that student enrollment will continue to increase yearly and spending money on parking spaces will not solve the issue. Although, the football stadium is a huge cash cow for investment on campus. In fairness, tons of money has been donated into rebuilding Foreman field because it attracts revenue. It makes sense that this stadium has a higher priority for development because of projected return of investments. The question I have is; what is the return of investment of parking? It is a common complaint that many have had for years that doesn’t seem to have a real solution, except to write more fines and charge students.

ODU is a great school in my opinion, it is just something you have to get accustomed to. The food and on campus housing could be a little better overall. Most of the professors I've come in contact with actually care about you and your grades.

I love it! I still go to the library to study for my CPA. I just love the campus and the atmosphere. 90% of the professors are there to help you succeed and will work with you to understand the material. There were some professors that looked unapproachable but were a huge help when I went to them during office hours or called before a final exam. Overall a great place to get an education and I'm a proud alumni.

Old Dominion University was a great school to attend. The diversity of people, backgrounds and beliefs I found in fellow students inspired learning and discussion outside of the classroom. I don't know if I would have received the same meaningful educational experience if I had attended a more homogenous campus setting - where everyone looked like me. The faces I engaged with, are friends and colleagues still today. Their insights continue to serve me when I need to connect, discuss form beliefs about relevant current events.

It is good school to learn and grow. I have experienced some things to happen personally and ODU staff was there to help me academically. I would advise anyone to choose ODU because there are so many chances to grow in your field of learning. Not to mention there are always fun activities going on on campus.

Coming into to Old Dominion University freshman year was one of the best experiences I had. One of the things that stood out to me from Old Dominion was student activities. Whenever there is a student activity event, there is a great amount of students who come out and participate. Everyone is able to have a good time, and meet new people to create a better social network. Another great thing about this university is the amount of programs that are available to the students. There are over 160 programs for undergraduate students, and graduates leading towards different degrees. Old Dominion is great for challenging each student to be motivated to meet their requirements based off of a person’s field of study. After attending to Old Dominion for one year, I would suggest that high school students to go on a campus tour to see the campus life and to highly consider attending. I remember when I was very nervous about going to my classes because I was not too familiar with the educational buildings. I was afraid I would get lost, and not make it to any of my classes. Luckily I ran into an upperclassmen who was willing to help. I finally felt relieved when she told me she will help me find my classes. While she showed my around we talked about are majors and our classifications. She was very kind, and helpful like most people I came across on campus. I don’t know anyone who doesn't feel welcomed at Old Dominion. Everyone enjoys their time here at this university.Old Dominion University is very diverse, and welcome all ethnic backgrounds. Student are always involved with activities whether if it's employment with the school ,sports , or special events. In my opinion it's one of the best schools I have known so far.

I think that Old Dominion is beautiful as well as a really good place and location for me. I don't like small communities, but I also don't like something too overwhelming. I think that this school has alot to offer me and in excited to start my adventures here.

I know that it’s a great school and it has everything I want, it’s the school at the top of my list. From sports to academics, it’s my top choice. They have a division one soccer team, a variety of academics, and a big beautiful campus . I got accepted and I can’t wait to start in the fall when I leave.

Old Dominion University is a great university. Teachers are always willing to help you out. I have never had a bad incident with any of my teachers. I am an online student and even though I may not be able to speak face to face with my teachers they always have available officer hours where you can meet with them through a video chat. They also respond to emails in a timely manner. School campus is nice and they always keep you updated with what's going on via email. Their is always many activities to get involved with that is going on around the campus.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Old Dominion University isn't perfect but what school is? They offer many clubs and organizations. The classes are necessary and the resources for help if you need it are reliable. We recently went from a PWI(Predominately White Institution) to an MSI(Minority Serving Institution).
