What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Ronicia

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, the first thing I would tell myself is to apply for scholarships ealier. When I was a senior at Oxon Hill High School I so focused on passing my classes and having fun, I completely forgot how quickly the school year was ending . Everytime the opportunity came to apply for a scholarship I would put it on hold thinking I had all the time in the world to complete them. As my second advise I would tell myself is that fun can wait. I was so concerned about enjoying my senior year to the fullest, I forgot all about the things I needed to do in order to attend college. A wise man once told me, " you can always have fun, it doesn't stop with age". Overall I would just tell myself to focus more on the steps to attend college, and graduating with the lowest amount of money to owe.

Talaya

If I could go back in time and talk to myself about as a high school senior, I would advice myself to take more college prep courses to prepare me academically for college. I would consider more college visits to different schools, to help make my decision on a college choice. I would work hard on creating a more effective study pattern in order to increase my knowledge and remain more focus. Also, I would learn to save more money so that I would be able to contribute financially to the success of my education.

tiffany

I would tell myself to first to calm down, there is no bullies popping out from behind trees, nor are there professors that will rip your head off.take your time to think about what school is right for you, but also pheasible for your parents to pay for. Scholarships are out there just take the time to apply for them. Soon you will be an adult, so take the initiative in making your dreams come true, afterall its your life and no one elses.

brendon

If I could go back in time, I would first tell myself to work extremely hard in high school to prepare for my first year of college. I would also inform myself of the intensity of my icollege introduction classes. The advice I would give myself: Fully focus on school. College life can be demanding and you must make yourself ready for this transition. Keep your grades up because your college admission is still contingent on your current academics. Finally, I would tell my past self to enjoy life, college is a great opportunity to learn and meet new friends. The transition from high school to college will be fine.

Justina

I would tell myself to not stress out, and to have fun. I would tell myself that school is not a punishment, but a great privalege that many don't get the chance to have, so take in all that you can take in from this experience. Learn all you can, study hard, do your absolute best and do not settle for the "I'm just going to get by attitude". Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions, that's how you learn, so don't be afraid to raise your hand if you don't understand something. Remember to listen closely to instructions and follow them.

Melody

I would tell myself to go with Bowie. I would encourage my younger self to look past the grime and the grit and to get over the normal "freshman" jitters and dive in to the culture. I would tell myself that I would meet professors who have my best interest at heart who would be dedicated to helping me reach my goal as a writer. I would reassure myself that the Bible study on campus would provide sure footing for me. Overall, I would tell myself that I was making the right choice... Bowie State University is the place to leave my legacy.

College is an exciting place with lots of freedom, freedom that will allow you to stray from the teachings that has enabled you to get where you are; freedom to use your time wisely or foolishly. High school is very important; especially your senior year because it is here that you perfect the skills that will carry you through to your freshman year of college and beyond. College is very costly so use your time to get scholarships, grants and other money to offset tuition and other costs. Do your very best in classes because many scholarships are offered at graduation if your GPA is high enough. A four-year College education can leave you in debt unless you use the resources given to you. Realize things will change and adjustments must be made. You will have to work for everything you want, no more late assignments. Everything runs on schedule and if you fall behind schedule you fall behind for the semester. In high school, practice good study and organization skills. You have to know how to balance what is important with fun activities and get ready to have the most fun you will ever have in your life.

angelita

Angelita study hard its not easy out there. Its really hard to get a job with no education and with this economy. And with a minimum wage salary your not able to pay you cell phone bill, pay the bill for the house, car payment and be able to go out. Its not possible. Out there in the reel world its way different, some people don?t care about you. You struggle to pay you own things and find a way to pay because they don?t care the will cut everything out. And all those bills you have its not going to be possible to pay for collage Angelita study work hard to do your best think about your future.

Christina

"Always dream!!" would have been the advice that I would have told myself as a high school senior. Dreaming is very important because without dreams you wouldn't have passion. Without passion there are no desires and with no desires you will never be driven. Dreaming is hard because a lot of us become afraid of what our parents, friends, family, and etc may think. However, those people don't know what's best for you! The only person that will know what's best for you is yourself. You know the desires of your heart and you know what you're striving for. As a person who's always been driven by children. Working with children and being around children gave me the passion to become a teacher. There are individuals that disagrees with my dream, and they say that "You're not going to make any money". Even though those individuals disagrees with my dream it doesn't mean that I can not accomplish it. I just have to fight and work hard until I see my dream come true. So I say to you never give up on your dream until you see it come to pass.

Ethel

If I could go back in time and talk to myself in high school I would let me know that there is a very big differnce between high school and college. Some of the things you learn in high school are needed for in college. Classes like English and Math you need these classes and not everything they are teaching they are teaching you for nothing. You really need that information The reason why you will be able to write good papers is because of your English teachers. Also college math is difficult so try and pay exta attention. Also dont think beause you took a classin high school it will be a piece of cake because it isn't. The best advice I can give myself is to read, take notes, pay attention, and do work on time. Because college isn't all about school there is fun there too, but you must make sure that your ahead of the game in order to have as much fun as you want.

Ivee

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior i'd offer the best advice. I'd tell myself to study for my ACT, 2 points higher makes a HUGE difference. I'd also tell me to challenge myself. The GPA looks better lower with AP and honors courses vs. higher with less challenging courses. Wondering what my transcript would be like had i not dropped that physics course is an answer I'll never have, had I knew the significance of challenging myself and preparing myself for crucial tests I'm positive my scores would've been that much better. Schools wont take you seriously unless you take you seriously first! Involvement in any school affiliated club speaks a lot of sincerity and seriousness about who you are as a person and a scholar! This advice is what I would've gave myself, but it's never too late because now i can pass that knowledge down to a younger brother or sister one day and only HOPE they use it and acknowledge the experience i have to give to them.

Brittney

While in high school, I did not treat the college ideal as a serious prospect. I had dreams of joining the Air Force instead. Due to my lack of preparation, when I did go to college, my academic beginning had a rough start. If I could go back in time, to my senior year, I would tell myself to take the SAT seriously and to explore different colleges. Had I done this, I would have had the opportunity to explore a new environment and be more independent. Although, I took a few A.P. classes in high school, if I had studied harder, I would not have had to retake them in college. Another helpful tip I would give my younger self is to research various academic programs and financial aid options. Finding the appropriate financial support is not a difficult task but take the time, it is worth the work. Also, I would tell myself to not be afraid to ask questions because the best knowledge awaits inquisition. Life lessons are good when you fail to do something correctly; however, life tends to be better when you do the right things the first time.

Tiffany

Tiffany, the transition will not be as rough as you think that it is. You've chosen the right university and you will fit in like this is where you should've been your entire life. Make sure you stay focused on what your goal is and don't get swayed in the wind of trying to be like everybody else around you. Everybody else around you is not working toward the same goal as you so they're not the right people to follow. Stay yourself and don't change, unless you're changing the world. Please do me a favor and don't procrastinate. You think you work better under pressure but it's really not worth the hassle and the stress. You'll have a better social life if you do your work when you're supposed to, trust me. Other than that, you're on the right path. Keep up the good work! You're making a world of difference and many are proud of you. Never give up because the people need the gifts that only you possess. Remember that!

Jamone

always stay focus and driven as for college is a new experience and its what you make it. Always do homework, essays, and mid-term papers early never procrastinate because some teacher are strict and wont let u make things up abnd if you do things early you can put yourself in a good habbit of prioritizing. Always be open-minded and make lots of good friends you might need thme in the long run.

antoine

make sure the school represents everything that you stand for and that it is structured to fit all your needs

Nashelle

Do not always follow your friends or your boyfriend/girlfriend. Make the choice that is right for you, both academically and financially. Stay focused and dont get sidelined by the glitter of something that MAY SEEM better and then you realize it was a bumcg of smoke. School is fun and have fun but make sure that your academic priorities come first and then go party and have a good time. Enjoy yourself because this will turn out to be the best time of your life.

Renae

Finding the right college or school that is best for your child or if you are a student really depends on what kind of environmet you are looking. I wouldn't dwell to much on the cost because how can education be priced if if that's your concern just look at the bright side, the career you choose will be worth it . All that money you or your parents spend well be paid off or come back to you in a few years because the university or college that you went to is going to make sure they find you a job whne or before it's time to graduate.

Jennifer

Finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is a decision that you can make. However, here are a few tips that gave me much success. First, consider the type of person that you are and find those same qualities in your school. Next, consider if you would like to attend school in state or out of state. Also, research and visit your school to see if that college is right for you. If you are a student who is intetrested in becoming a teacher or a nurse, look at a college that has a high turnover rate in these fields. Also, you are in control of what school you attend. Never allow a parent, a friend, or even a boyfriend to determine which college you decide to attend. That decision is up to you. In addition, be open to meeting new people, learing new things, and take your education seriously. Lastly, respect yourself and respect others. I guarantee if you live by this guideline your college expereince will be an enjoyable one. In conclusion, attending college is a journey that will chance your life, make smart decisions and consider what college is right for you.

Tonia

Look for a school that help you reach your major. Go to school because you want to if not you will not like school. You make your college years fun or not. Try your best!

Yolanda

Parents and students should start early to have time to choose the college of their liking.

Ebony

Look into one than just one school before deciding thats where you would like to be

Melisa

Make sure its the right for you and no oe else becuase you are the one going.

Eric

My advice to those engaged in the tough task of choosing the right college is to remember that only YOU can decide what college is best suited for YOU. Do not succumb to the pressures of others when making this decision, because all institutions arent right for everyone. Some will find that they are better suited in a smaller institution where more attention is paid to each individual student, while some may work better in a bigger institutions with a faster pace and more freedom. After you make your decision, it is important to remember that is easy to lose focus during your first year in college, especially if you live on campus, but this is the most important year. If you fall behind acedemically during your first year, it will be a struggle to bring your GPA up to par (ideally a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.) Some useful tips are: Stay orginized (keep your assignments in a daily planner), Network (Dont be afraid to swap numbers with your classmates to discuss schoolwork), Make use of your teachers Office Hours (They take notice if they see you trying), Attend every class ( It is easy to fall behind!)

Sade

Do campus visits.

Sharee

When searching for the best college, do a lot of research, do campus visits and tours. Converse with the students that are attending that college and ask them about their own personal experience with that college. Never just pick a school because it's convient for you, but because you really think that you are going to enjoy it. College is an important and serious thing, it can help bring you up in life! And once you are at the schoool you have chosen, make the best of it and have as much fun as possible, but at the same time keep those grades up. College can be the best years of your life, if you play it right!

nyeshia

View the campus first and ask about reviews of the school.

Andre

The advice that can be given to parents and students looking to choose the right college is to be patient. Many students rush to make decisions based on family and peers, when they should take their time and get to know the campuses a little better. When you rush to select a school you end up in an enviornment you don't know with people you are unfamiliar and uncomfortable around. If students and parents are patient they will find a school where they feel right at home and everything that they value would be if not the same then very similar to their peers.

Pascal

I would tell them that they need to follow their dreams and that as loong as they are in a good accredited school, they should have no worries. Just do it and get it out of the way. Education is the key and as long as you have that, you will remain powerful forever.

Brittany

The advice that I would give to parents/students is to choose a schoool that provides you with a good foundation. The best school to attend is a school that teaches you about your own culture and helps you gain an understanding of who you are as an individual. It is very difficult to know where you are going and have goals if you do not know where you have come from and your ethnic group's history. Gaining a clear understanding of who you are allows you to take on future adversity with confidence.

Jasmine

The advice that I would give to parents and future college students is to always go with your first choice of education studies along with a back up plan of study or school, complete the SAT and recieve high scores, complete the FASA Finanical Aid application in order to recieve loans towards books, housing and tuition, look into all scholarships that may protain to your major, and finally to enjoy your experience in college because you only have one life to live. Thank you.

Molly

The best thing to do in order to find the perfect school for you is to set up a few days to see what the campus is all about. Also it is important for prospective students to talk to current students without parents to get the real deal on what the campus is like and for the parents to meet the parents of current students to do the same.

Phyllicia

The best advice I would give would be to go to as many open houses as you possibly can. That way you are able to know which school has the desired major that you want. The only thing that I wouldn't recommend is a school that is strictly there for parties and the school turns into a social event. Most college freshmen are sucked into this and in the end are dissatisfied and end up transferring out because on the lack of school work being done.

Terri

Visit the campus and meet as many people on and off campus as you can.

Natasha

The most advice I could give is to visit the school before you make a choice. Your school should be a reflection of you. Visiting the school will allow you to get a feel of how the campus life is. Secondly, make the best out of school. Get invovled! Getting invovled allows you to meet new people and make memories. You only have one life to live; so live it with no regrets. If you want to be a band geek be a band geek, if you want to play sports, do it. Make the best out of your time spent at college. Lastly, no who you are and dont change your morals or beliefs for anyone. Often times people get mixed in the wrong crowd. Its ok to say no to alcohol and drugs. Surround yourself with positive things and college will end up to be a great learning experiance as well as a great memory.

Zarinah

Make sure you go on a college tour and try out of state you never know. When you find your school you will know no one can tell you what school is for you.

Nathaniel

Go somewhere farther from home, dont make the cost of the school a major concern, save all that money from graduation (you'll need it)

Vernicia

I would say to the parents to back up their children no matter what decision they make. I would tell the students to make the right choice for themselves both academically and financially.

Ronnita

As a freshman it is always good to find a school that have strong academic feilds with a live campus life. Most likely a freshman would be more into the campus life but after a year or so they will reaize how different it is in college with no one to make you go to class. This is where the responsibilty that a child is taught and put into play. Grades become far more important when a price is put on education. It is also good to join organizations because job fields look at them and they make the connection stronger on top of outstanding academics.

Rebecca

Start looking and applying early. Tour campuses and ask questions, and be constantly looking into scholarship opprotunities. When on campus, keep looking, don't fall behind in your coursework, and plug into activities you enjoy and/or that relate to your field of study.

Johnita

When choosing a college you should decide whats best for you. I believe that a person shouldnt go to a college just because their parents went or because they want to follow their friends. College is a place where you go to start over. Its a place where you find who you really are. the people you befriend in college will be the most important people in your life. College effects you emtotionally, physically, and mentally. At the end of the day you will feel so proud of yourself from all of the work you have done. College is the final lap in the race, its your time to buckle down and show what you're really made of. You''ll laugh, cry, scream, and show any and every emotion you can think of. Even though BSU wasnt my frist choice as a school, I'm glad that I was able to come here. I befriended alot of people that I know I will keep forever. THey motivate me everyday to keep pushing and persuing my dreams. We study together, we help each other, and we grow together. College is what you make it and I wouldnt change a thing

Chinomnso

Choosing the proper college for a sudent is essential because for many college can "make you or break you ". When choosing a college there are many aspects to consider such as whether or not the individual is looking for a college campus that is relativley small or large. They would also have to consider whether or not they would like to commute and choose a school that is close to home, or live on campus and choose a school that is far from home. One of the most important advice I would give to a parent or a child is to become accustomed to the campus by visiting the campus. I would also advise that the student take a pre-college courses before the first semester start, such as a summer program. This would allow the student to become accustomed to the work load that is expected during their first semester. I would also advice that the student speak to a financial and academic advisor to see what sholarships are being offered, and courses that that they should expect to encounter during their college careeer. The greatest advice I would give is to locate a comfortable studying area on campus .

shantay

I would tell parents not to choose the school for their children. Let your children make this decision for themselves because they will have to live with it and not you. Parents try to give advice based on being a parent, but do not make the decision. Students talk to advisors at your high school in advance do not wait until the last minute to decide what school you want to go to. Try to visit the school and talk to students from all different type of backgrounds and personalities to see where you may fit in. Also look at your major and learn the course requirements before you get there so you'll know if thats something you really want to do. Also look at the student to teacher ratio because you know what type of learning environment is better for you. Students also look at the on-campus and off-campus activites especially if you plan on living on campus. Remember you will have to live there so go somewhere where there are a lot of activities going on so you WON'T TURN to DRUGS and ALCOHOL in your spare time.

Elizabeth

When I first started college i was not sure of my major, or exactly what I was doing there. The best advice I can give potential students and their parents is to speak with an admissions dean, and take a tour of the campus. The best time to take a tour is during the school year around the times when you think you will be taking classes. This will give you a chance to see the environment that you would be getting into. I strongly suggest visiting at least your three top choices, and set up a personal value system of what you want out of school on which to rate it. After deciding on the college you will attend, talk to upper classmen in your intended major about which professors to take, and not to take. Plan out your course shcedule so you can stay on track, and keep in close contact with your academic advisor, and career center advisors. Finally, get involved in some type of campus activity, especially one that helps career advancement and professional development. Joining an organization can build lasting relationships with classmates and the professors who sponsor them. Such organizations can also provide scholarships.

Tiffany

Make sure you apply to every scholarship you can and visit as many schools as you can so you can have alot of options

Cynthia

As a third year college student, the best advice I can give a prospective student is to be vision-oriented, focused, and to strive to make straight A's. In order to succeed at college, prospective students must have a goal in mind, a vision of where they would like to see themselves in ten or fifteen years. Success begins with a vision, a dream of what you want from life and how you are going to turn your dreams into reality. Moreover, a vision will empower you to be a focused student, one who is thirsty for knowledge and one who will turn in every assignment for every class on time and to the best of your limitless potential. These suggestions work as a system and, therefore, being focused will help you to become your professors' favorite and a straight-A, high-achieving student. As Jon Foreman, singer, songwriter, and guitarist of one of my favorite bands, Switchfoot, says, "you have one life...you have one life left to lead." You only get one, so make it count by living your dreams.

Brittany

Have the potential student participate in colligiate personality assessment, so the student will know it is the best choice for them

Daniel

Let your kids make the decision just assist them

Lillie

Advice I would give to parents and/or students about finding the right college would be to find out as much as you can about the colleges you plan to attend. Select a wide range of colleges. Do not just read the material and apply: visit the campuses, talk to the students, the faculty and staff. Explore as much of the campus as you can; try to eat lunch in the cafeteria, operate the computers and equipment, and visit the classrooms and dorms. Plan to spend a day on campus to asses the atmosphere and come to a conclusion as to whether the school is a good fit or not. To make the most of the college experience I suggest that you go out of your way to find the resources and the help you need, even if it's at your fingertips. After you find out what you want to do, fully indulge yourself in your chosen field; find mentors, and personally research all of your options. Get involved in campus activities and the community. Take a course unrelated to your major and spend some time preparing yourself for life after college. Last, but not least, have fun.

Keisha

The advice I would give parents and/or students about finding the right college and making the most of the college experience would be to major in something that you will enjoy and to have fun but know the real reason on why you are in college.

Antwann

I would tell parents and students to do research on every college that they are considering applying to. If they are able I would recommend going to that college to take a guided tour, so they can get a feel for the atmosphere. Next I will suggest that they sit down and narrow the colleges down by cost, and preference of the student thats attending. An example prefence is if the student feels better at a big university versus a small one, or a rural setting versus an urban one. I would also suggest that they take in the consideration of how far the campus is from thier house, this would be good for emergency purposes. If they take all of these steps, i'm sure they will be able to pick a college that will be well suited for the upcoming freshman to spend his or her next four years at. Finally I would explain to them if the school did not work out for them, they could always transfer to another university that might be a better fit.
