California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Lindsey

Now knowing what I do about transitioning into school, I would tell myself to take the new challenge head on. I do not think I was fully prepared for some of the courses I took so far in college; thus, I would want to tell myself not to stress about it and just take it one day at a time. I also would tell myself to study every day even though there may not be an exam any time soon. Besides that, college definitely is different than high school, but I think that with the willingness to adapt and ask for help it is a lot easier to transition.

The worst advice I've ever gotten was that it is okay not knowing your major at entry because at every school, the first two years is all about general education. I heard that piece of advice from conselors, upperclassman, even my AVID teachers has told me that. My AVID teachers, the ones who are supposed to inform me all about the college business, told me it did not matter if I was undecided because I can change it when I figure it out. Unfortunately attending Cal Poly has made it impossible. Every single day I was asked, "what's your major?" "Why are you here if you're not sure?" "Why did you declare something then?" The honest truth is because I thought I could switch. But I basically couldn't. All the classes I take by then would be a waste as soon as I switch majors. After one trimester of endless confronations, I made the desicion to leave. It was really hard for me, I had just made friends and adjusted to the new enviroment, but I had to leave. College is about finding yourself, and I definitly can't do that at Cal Poly.

tyrone

Dear 2008 Tyrone, This is your future self, who goes to college. Seriously. I'm only allowed 200 words to provide you with advice, so here's what you should do: Only choose a major that you have real interest in. Don't choose something because you think you'll get the better job. School is for the mind. So you might as well follow your passions. Probably the most important thing at college is the networking. Meeting people and winning friends is best use of your free time. When I say winning friends, I mean that you have to prove your value to people through successes. This makes people respect you. Most successes are usually not greeted with any applause or real attention, but they always give you a boost. To begin, start by being more prudent. Do things carefully and consider potential pitfalls during all attempts. Learn to choose your friends based on merit and character-- and while you are at it, start focusing on improving and making yourself into a real person with character. Try not to be just another fool. Sincerely your future self.

Relax! No, really! Movies, books, and word of mouth have built up your expectations of college-the stress, the drama, and the work. But not to worry!! Once you get here, you'll see that everyone is just as nervous and confused as you are. So, take your time, enjoy the last of your time in high school. Try not to focus too much on the future and have fun with your friends before you have to go your seperate ways. Don't wory about college life just yet. You'll be able to figure that out pretty easily when you get here. Also, don't worry about making new friends-I know this is one of your main concerns. However, I can guarantee this won't be a problem at all. There are so many people to meet in college. Reach out!! And most importantly, be yourself. Because there are plenty of people in college who will like you for who you are. You will fit in. So remember to have fun!

Nicholas

If I could go back and give myself advice, I would emphasize the importance of separating work time, and play time. When I first started college, I adopted a tendency to spread my work out for long periods of time, and I was only half focused on it. I soon realized that it is far more effective to dedicate a solid block of time to go to the library and study until all my work is done. Then I have the rest of my time to relax, unwind, and have fun with my friends. A lot of this has to do with developing an efficient work ethic, and engaging fully in the task at hand. Before I realized this, I felt like I was both studying all the time and playing all the time, but not doing a very good job at either.

Victoria

Don't be so confident about what is going to happen in the next four years, everything is going to change and you just have to accept it. It okay to change schools, majors, friends, and heck even sexual orientation. College is a time to change, and though you could have been totally against it in high school, it can be your new love in college. You can even use college to learn things about your culture, because even though we are all preassigned to a race, doesn't mean we know our culture. Or go explore another culture, the possiblitles are endless as long as you don't flunk out. But it is okay to get a F in a course.

Tara

Do not procrastinate! Set deadlines for assignments, readings, essays, and studying for tests otherwise you will spend the entire night cramming and getting little sleep. Begin to study for a test or midterm a couple days or more in advance because the information will be more engrained into your brain, and you will feel more confident going into the test. Continue to meet new people even if you find a close group of friends. There are an abundant amount of people on campus, and everyone has something new to teach you. Finally, do not be afraid to challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone. You can accomplish more than you realize and will have a better experience by sampling all that college has to offer.

Joshua

If I were given the chance to talk to myself about college, I was advise myself not to be so stubborn. I would say eing eager is a great and wonderful thing, but it can also come back around to hurt you. Do not get over your head and relax and enjoy college. Learn how to manage your time and do not lose site of your goals. I understand that college is a time of independence. You honestly do not know what a blessing your friends and family are to you. You will miss them even though you are denying the fact at the moment. Do not slack off in school. Always try your best. Learn how to cook your own food instead of lying around the house during summer. Review your Calculus notes and read ahead for your future Statistics class. Again, do not be over your head. You need to realize and face reality at times and it is going to be tough, but you need to pull through. Good luck and remember how blessed you are right now,

Saber

If I could go back in time I would advise myself to save my money better. I would also tell myself to learn better study habits, my grades were decent in high school but I didn't study too much. For the most part I wouldn't want to alter what I did in high school because it made me who I am today, but if i had saved money better and had better study habits I would be a little better off right now but still be me. We can't change the past because it would change who we are now too much. That is what i would do if I could go back and speak to the high school me.

Shauna

Knowing what I know now I would tell myself " you are stronger than you seem". Although that sounds very cliche they are the exact words that I needed to hear. The school I chose was mentally hard for me due to the lack of diversity and climate of the campus. Do not get me wrong it is an excellent school but being the only Black person in your class can have its effect on you. Now i grew up in Los Angeles, so I am use to a variety of people everywhere therefore it was a real culture shock when I was not only that one black person in class, but a black female and a black female who did not play sports. I would tell myself to have fun, be yourself and do everything you want to in college. This is the time of your life and yes they may not all look like you but you all have one thing in common, you are all students with goals of a better life. Good Luck! this is a big accompolishment and again you are a lot stronger than you think. Congratulations

Dessie

If I could go back in time knowing that I'd have the chance to see myself face to face, I'd tell myself not to focus on the outside world and what they had to say about my character or my actions. I'd make sure I remained focused on my education instead of trying to fit in the "it" crowd. Knowing what I know now, I'd make sure that I would have made straight A's if not B's. I'd also tell myself, that the path I was on wouldn't set my future up for success but for failure. I'd let myself know that now at 25 years old, I've attended college more than four times and that the reason I never stayed in college was because my family would praise me for the positive things so I thought that was too good, so I allowed myself to fall short. I'd also make sure if I didn't get a good education for my family, I'd do it for myself and my future.

If I had the chance to give my high school self some advice I would say: hold your head up high, don’t hold back, and never let other people make your own decisions. As a high school student, I was always going back and forth, trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I just kept letting other people decide for me. “Dannie, you should go into the medical field” or “Dannie, go to art school.” Although I was very studious, I was still confused about myself. Always second guessing myself; always wondering if my decisions would disappoint my parents. It was that type of thinking that made me hold back on things that I really wanted to do. Now that I am more comfortable with myself, I know that as long as I am happy and successful, my parents will be proud of me no matter what. I should have never held back because now that I am older, I’m doing the things I missed out on and I am so much more happier. I should have always held my head up high because everything wasn’t as hard as it seemed.

sonia

Education has been essential for students. Through education, students can get the knowledege and pursue their career in their choice of major. The first step in higher education starts in high school. If I look back to high school and see myself as a senior again, I would have been better choices. I would have been committed to studying and doing my homeowork, besides watching television and hanging out with my friends. If I had not made a mistake, I would have went to a university thana community college. I would not have to fight my way through waitlisted classes to get offically register. I would have got the actual feel of real college life and vigourous college studying. Not that community colleges don't offer, but I don't get challenged often my classes. I would I could have gone back and told myself to get rid of the lazy Sonia and be a confident and work hard. I would have told her, Sonia, that this is not the time to play around. I would have told my old myself that going to college is a whole new step, like stepping into a alien world.

Adrian

I believe the path I chose to take during my senior year in high school was the correct path. I was exposed to many things, some very heinous; however I believe that without those experiences I would not be as "cultured" as I feel today. It has given me the necessary confidence to succeed at Cal Poly and provoked me to further explore the things I have been learning while in school, particularly the study of the earth and the trend of climate change. Any advice that I would give my senior year persona would be limited to "do what you're already doing."

cory

Be prepared for the experience of a lifetime.

Alison

Alison, I know a three and a half hour drive seems close, but please resist the urge to go home every weekend. I know you have an amazing boyfriend back home, but think about your priorities. Every time you go home, you lose the chance to accept Cal Poly as your new home. The people you meet in college will be fantastic; I'm sure they'll love you. You are spending the next four years in San Luis Obispo, that's a long time, you could make so many friends in that amount of time. Just give Cal Poly a chance, there are so many opportunities awaiting you, Alison, don't waste them by sitting on the Amtrak train for six hours just to see your boyfriend for one day. Hey, San Luis Obispo is a beautiful area, you've got beaches, wine country, agriculture, hiking trails, and a college campus, go explore everything. The next time I see you, I want you to be able to tell me that you've done everything that was available to you. One more thing, if someone happens to offer you a job to sell chocolate your sophomore year, say yes.

Serena

Girl, I know you already have this small idea of what college is going to be like, but future me is going to give you a little "Reality-Check-Pinch." First, GO TO CLASS, EVERDAY. It makes a bigger impact than you realize. Your professor will recognize this, regardless of whether they voice it or not. If they see you making an effort to put yourself forth, they'll be more willing to put the effort back when you have a question or need help on homework. Also, take advantage of any and all resources provided! Some colleges provide awesome resources that help you bump that B into an A. For an example, Austin Community College offers a Learning Lab where professors are there around the clock to tutor you in every course, for free! You'd be ridiculous to not take advantage of that. I know sometimes life happens and it seems like the end of the world, but don't let it affect your grades or attendance! The classroom can and will be your escape from life's drama. Let yourself get lost in it and most of all have fun with your learning and education.

Emily

Do not only apply to one college, even if you know where you want to go. Applying to more than one college gives you leverage in gaining financial aid. Apply for a ton of scholarships, because money can end up being the biggest stresser in college. When choosing a college, visit the campus and talk to students in the major you are looking at. Look for a school that offers more than just academics and sports. There is so much out there to be discovered! Always keep an open mind when choosing a major and a career path. College will give you the opportunity to discover what you really want to do with the rest of your life. Most importantly, focus on school and extracurricular activities when you start college. You will meet people with the same interests as you, and they will become your life-long friends. Your social life will follow if you focus on the reason you are attending college. Placing too much focus on a social life often leads to academic probation, dismissal from the school, and an end to your academic and social life at that school.

I would say do yourself a favor and get explore the town in your free time. There are lots of things to see and plenty of places to volunteer or work at if you look in the right places. Also don't be afraid to make friends. Its your first year and everyone else is just as nervous and excited as you are.

Kaitlyn

My college experience has been very different from what I expected. I knew it was going to be hard work, but I didn't realize how much work has to be put into each class. So far, I have managed to get good grades and I have fallen in love with both my school and town. Being in the college atmosphere has motivated me to achieve and attempt the career I am really passionate about which is teaching. The school I am at lets me take classes in which I am able to have hands on experience in teaching and being in the classroom. I am only a freshman and already have experience working with children and being in a 1st grade classroom. This experience has been very valuable because now I am positive this is the career I want. Being at college has erased all my doubts and now the only thing I have to worry about is being able to pay for the rest of my college experience. I love being at my school and I love what each class has to offer and how much I am learning.

Jonathan

My college experience has helped me realize how much I still don't know and how much I still have to learn. As a college freshman I had a puffed-up idea of myself and what I would accomplish. I didn't take my studies seriously because I thought things would just work out for me without really trying. However, college has helped me realize that good things come through dedication, hard work, and through viewing myself as a student in all areas of my life. College has also helped me discover the things that I am passionate about and the things that I am not so passionate about. I found out that I should pursue a career in something I am passionate about rather than just what can make me the most money and make me the most secure in life. I have gained a more balanced perspective on my life and discovered how blessed I am to have the opportunity to learn and to pursue the career of my choice. I know that my education at Cal Poly will benefit me greatly in my future and I will be better off because of my time there.

Caleb

The most beneficial thing I have gotten from coming here for college are opportunities. In high school I was never terribly involved with organizations or groups, nor did I count myself as having a strong sense of school spirit. But coming here opened my eyes to all the kinds of things I can devote myself to. Since coming here, I have joined a service fraternity to college bands, a structural engineering club, and attended lectures from world-renowned architects and engineers. Beyond that I am interested in joining more organizations like Engineers Without Borders, Chinese Student Association, and my school's Week of Welcome team which organizes orientation events for prospective students as well as incoming freshmen. I have also now found a strong sense of school pride and will gladly express it to anyone.

Angela

My college experience has provided me the opportunity to develop team working, professional, and enhanced leadership skills in a supportive environment. I have been able to form relationships with my peers that allow us to work well and learn from each other. I have also had the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs and activities such as SIFE, ISA, and Delta Sigma Pi that have exposed me to a diverse array of experiences and helped me to develop intersts in fields that I could one day see myself having a career in. I have been provided with faculty and alumni connections that prove invaluable when it comes to networking and a strong student advising center that help me to stay on track academically. It has be very valuable for me to attend college in order to build these professional, team working, and leadership skills and I am much more prepared to go into a career after developing these skills then I was straight out of high school.

Brianna

So far, my college experience has been wonderful. I have made many new friends and we are generally very good about balancing fun and work. For instance, we love going downtown or hiking or even to the Thursday night farmers markets, however if we have a midterm or something due in a class we know that it is more important for our futures to study and do well in our classes. I love that I have made new friends that share the same values that I do. It makes it much easier for me to stick to my study habits. Attending Cal Poly will be very valuble in the future as well as now. Many industry professionals look to Cal Poly to find interns and eventually hire students. The community knows that Cal Poly students get a rare, hands on eperience in their field of study. For example, I am a Graphic Communications major and I am actually running printing presses as well as designing marketing pieces, therefore gaining a very well-rounded education of the Graphic Communication industry as a whole.

Nick

I have had many good professors and learned alot. Also the dorm experience is fun in meeting so many new people. Cal Poly is an excellent place for school as the professors are great and the ties to industry are incredibly strong. Many big companies recruit directly out fo Cal Poly and I had the oppurtunity to speak to many managers and businessmen from numerous companies. I am lucky enough to receive the total package here at Cal Poly as I learn many new things in the classroom, but in life as well. I have met many new people in the dorms and in school. These interactions with other students and professors helped me learn how to establish working realtionships along with meeting many new friends. My schooling here will prepare me to hopefully create some great things as I strive to learn all I can in the Engineering programs here at Cal Poly.

Megan

In my opinion it is extremely important to attend college not only for the education but for the opportunity to find yourself. Before college I was shy and nervous in a room full of people. College brought me out of that shell. And even more than my education, it was the self confidence I was able to gain that lead me to success today. It was my instructors, the classes, my peers and the enviornemt of cal poly that molded me into the confident, educated and carismatic woman that I am today. Since attending college I have this internal drive and hunger for acheivment, not only acedemically but for all things I consider great in life. I am certain that anything I put forth 100 percent into I can achieve. And in my heart I know that all those exams, papers and allnighters were all worth the friends I made and the experience I recieved from cal poly. By obatining my degree I feel another labrynth of oppertunites was opened for me, each accomplishment wont be easy but I can guarentee the more I experience the more I will learn each and every day. After all, we Learn by Doing.

Caleigh

Going off to school I have learned to live on my own and be an adult in the real world. I have realized how much knowledge a person can gain from higher education but I have also realized how much I still don't know. After getting to know educated and worldy individuals, I want to surround myself with people like them becuase they challenge me in my every day life. I know that with my education I can get a well paying, respectable job and I can live life feeling accomplished. I feel that it's important to attend college so you can experience and explore the options available to you in your future, to become more open minded and not feel limited on what you can do with your life, what you canbeleive in, and even the opinions that you make on everyday choices/decisions.

Diana

What I have gotten out of college is that you can do anything if you really set your mind to it. You can really be anything you want to be you just have to have determination, and be willing to put some time and thought into it. Whether it be sleepless nights of studying for that final, or finishing up some homework. It has been valuable for me to attend college because I want a better future and I know I am on the right path to reach my goal. It has also been valuable because you get to learn how to prioritize and manage time wisely to get things done.

Dana

My college experience has taught me how to relax. Back at community college, I was plauged by the "commuter syndrome," where I would go to class only to leave as fast as I could start my car. At Cal Poly, I have been forced to make new friends, which meant getting involved in extra curricular activities and exercising my networking skills. Consequently, people like to be in relationship, and many friends have stipulated that I get out on the weekends which has helped me grow to understand that college isn't just keeping my nose in a book; it's an experience. Now I have a better understanding of how to balance fun and shool while still being successful in the classroom. I have counted this a valuable experience because no matter how hectic the day, I still go to bed filled with joy, ready for upcoming day. Cal Poly's campus is populated with enthusiastic and diversely passionate people, many of whom I could never have known being anywhere else. Plus, this environment has only fueled my own passion to learn and continue towards my personal educational goals.

Emily

My college experience has been positive in every aspect as my teachers have been attentive to their students and they care deeply about their subjects. I am inspired by their dedication and drive, so much so that I have almost changed my major to pursue Anthropology. My current dual major is Chemistry/Theatre. I love to learn, and Aims Community College has made my education a joyous experience. I can't wait to transfer to a 4-year university after I am finished at Aims to continue my education. College is an invaulable opportunity that I am blessed to be able to pursue. It has and will continue to help me pursue my dreams. I dream to change the world from both the stage and the research lab by inspiring people to pursue their own dreams and finding the cures to some of the diseases that prevent them from doing so. I would not trade my time at Aims for anything; the teachers there continue to help and inspire me to fulfill my dreams.

Chris

Out of all of the things that I have learned in college thus far, the most important life skills that I will take away are the concepts of living with other people. Being in an apartment with three other roommates, I originally was not sure how we would get along. This was the first time that I would be away from home, and I did not know what to expect. At first, everyone seemed to be fairly timid, even wary of the other roommates. Going into another person’s room was like entering enemy territory on the battlefield. The apartment as a whole was completely disheveled. Dishes would pile until the sink overflowed, rooms filled with clutter, and trying to find food in the fridge was like looking for a needle in a haystack. As time went on, the chaos began to wear on everyone and we realized that communication was needed in order to turn our house into a functional home. After some collaboration, many of the major issues that we began with quickly became minor problems that were quickly resolved. Through application, I learned that communicating with someone directly is the most effective way to solve a problem.

Daniele

So far I have met a lot of new people and learned the expectations. I am going to college for my nursing degree, and without college; getting my nursing degree is not even an option. To achieve your goals you need to follow through and do ever step possible to reach your goal.

Chelsea

I have learned so much on a variety of topics within and outside of my mahor. It is such a valuable experience because of the friendships I have formed with both students and professors alike.

Melissa

College has been invaluable to my personal growth. I not only have learned more than I have in all the years prior to entering college, but I have learned life- and social skills that will help me as an adult out in the world. Being able to learn and work with people much different than myself has allowed me to learn about myself as well broadening my horizons of my ways of thinking. College and college life has put me through experiences inside and outside of the classroom that have and will continue to sculpt me into the person I want to be in the future: I will be a respected member of my field, and a functional and enriched adult member of society.

Claire

So far my college experience has shown me that I can be the independent person that I always imagined myself to be. I am originially from Long Island, NY, and the decision to go to school 2500 miles away from home was a difficult one. But, I fell in love with Cal Poly and decided to put aside all my inhibitions and go for it. Since I left, I have not once regretted my decision. Being in college has shown me just how much I appreciate having the opportunity to go to school and to learn all the things that I have. I truly enjoy going to class and learning about animals everyday, and though it may be stressful, I do not wish that I were in any other stage of my life. By going to school so far away from home, I have had to find my own ways to manage stress and handle living on my own simultaneously. This is an invaluable life lesson that I could not have learned anywhere else. College has given me a sense of purpose and drive in my life and I hope that this continues as I finish my college career.

Matthew

I have learned so far that I need to keep up with the work I'm given and that nothing in life is free unless you know exactly who to talk to and you have enough charm to pull it off.

Kendall

I have learned so much about life and have grown so much in the last two years. I know that if I didn't attend this university, my life would be completely different and definitely not as amazing as it is right now. I have awesome friends, I am getting a priceless education, and I am just so blessed and happy to be here in this exact moment. Cal Poly means the world to me.

Sarah

So far I've learned that college is a lot of hard work, and it's only going to get harder. I accept this challenge with open arms since I know the only way to achieve my dream of being a famous cartoonist is to go to college and get that degree. The hard work has prepped me for how demanding real-life will be, especially with the strict deadlines of the animation/television/movie world. Even with all the seriousness though, I've found it's still okay to have a little bit of fun, especially when producing creative ideas. In this field you really have to be yourself, which my college (The Art Institute of California, Los Angeles) has taught me so far.

Andrea

Because of my college experience, I have grown up. I have matured greatly as a person, mentally, physically, and socially. My senior year I rebelled because I was not happy with myself and the environment I was exposing myself to. When I left those people and that environment behind, I was able to refocus my life and surround myself with what I thought was important. I re-established the strong relationship that I had had with my family and zoned in on what I wanted to do with my life. College has been extremely valuable to attend, as it has introduced me to so many different types of people and forced me to learn how to work with them, no matter how difficult or easy it was. As an aspiring female engineer, I have discovered that I must be confident in myself and present myself as a serious and hardworking student in order to ensure that my fellow classmates regard me with the same respect. I still have almost three years of college left, and I look forward to the many life lessons it has yet to instill in me.

Danielle

I have met some wonderful people and have experience so many new activities. I have found the career choice that I was looking for that will make me happy in the future. I have found a passion that I hope to pass on to others when I become a teacher. My professors have helped me a lot and have provided me with valuable information. I hope to continue learning more from the amazing professors at Cal Poly in the next two years.

Jesse

Cal Poly has been a huge blessing to me. I have learned to learn. In high school, it was about grades and simply getting homework done. Now, school has become an avenue for pursuing knowledge about the world around me. I look at the world through a new lense with every class I take. From stopping after geology class to wonder how that mountain might have formed to getting out of design class and admiring the beauty of a building, college causes me to appreciate the world around me that much more. I look forward to continuing my education and hope to use it to give others an appreciation for the world in which they live.

Yani

I believe that attending college has made me more wiser, smarter and more an independent woman. The more classes I take and the more I'm in school I learn many new material and explore every option there is to become someone in life. Being in school is not only making me better myself but to become a role model and set an example for my daughter. I tell my daughter everyday that the only way you can be someone is by going to school and better your education. I'm a breast cancer survivor at the age of twenty nine. I thought that I was not going to make it. I have a second chance in life and going to school is my number one priority right now. Attending Essex County College is like my second home because the teachers and counselors that I have right now are very good and they show me how to manage myself to be patient and focus all the time.

Mitchell

It has allowed me to see what it is like to live on my own and not depend on anyone. The education i have already began to receive after only 6 weeks of class has taught me more than some ever have the opportunity to learn. Our hands on learning approach has also given me experience in engineering feild work that I normally would not get until working after college. My college experience has only just begun and I have already started learning what I need to in order succeed in the proffesional world.

Marin

I was really apprehensive about attending college while I was pregnant, especially because I have no job or any other way to pay for college. I'm glad I did though. So far, attending college has really boosted my self esteem. I used to be a very depressed person and I never thought highly of myself. Lately, though, my life has really been turning around. Doing well in college is really making me understand that I am an intelligent person, and I'm not worthless. I really hope I can finish out college early and go on to better my life even further.

Rachel

I have gotten the skills I use in my job today and working on getting the skills I need for my future career. I have gained more the knowledge I have also gained leadership skills from my time as German club president as well as being a math tutor and I have gained great communcation skills from my classes ranging from art history to math. Attending college has been valuable for me to attend for a couple of main reasons. First off the knowledge and experience gained for my current career and my future career. Also the fact that attending college helps keep me in the mode for learing which helped me stay in college instead of giving up and just working full time. Last attending college has given me the experiences of a lifetime as well as the qualities needed to be a good person in life.

Matthew

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), in San Luis Obispo, is a small school. A small class size was something that made my experience more personal and very comfortable. I was able to meet and get to know most of my classmates. In addition, the school's motto is "Learn by Doing" which meant lots of projects. Having projects in nearly every class nicely intertwined theoretical and practical knowledge. The projects were almost always team projects making it easy to interact with many of my classmates. I learned at Cal Poly how to work well in a team as well as how to be a team leader. Being well suited to work with others is, in my opinion, one of the most important qualities a person should have.

Henry

I am that much closer to knowing who I am and I now know my priorities as well as what I want my future to look like.

Brittany

College for me has been a fantastic experience; I found out so much about myself and what I am passionate about. For years I thought that I would be in advertising or graphic design, but through volunteering and my study courses, I found that my calling was to help others and I switched my major to health occupations focusing on administration. One day I hope to start an non-profit organization to promote and help finance Asperger's research.

My college experience has affected me in a very beneficial manner. During this time, my self-confidence has skyrocketed. Before college, I was always the shy person who never said anything in study groups. Now I have enough confidence to contributed to the group without feeling embarrassed or shy. I also realized the harsh realities of the real world, which happen to those who don't stay up to par or who don't do what they're supposed to when they are supposed to. There was also the fact that one is surrounded by people who are in the same predicament; essentially, a first-year with an on-campus job and soccer practice would definitely find multiple others who are in the same situation as he or she is in. So that makes dealing with certain situations, whether they may be good or bad, a lot less painful. College paves the way for success in the future.

I am so grateful i decided to go to cal poly out of all the colleges i got accepted to. I ended up living with someone who was so different from me in many aspects but i managed to get along with my roommate and learn from her just like she learned from me. Also, i enjoyed cal poly's teaching method since it allowed me to become more well informed in all my classes. In most schools teachers are only seen in class lectures but in cal poly there is this thing called office hours which enables a student aquire help from a teacher. Office hours really helped me when i needed to discuss something with my teacher away from class. Cal Poly has such a great atmosphere, everyone is pretty much friendly and the weather is nice.
