Dana College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time and talk to myself about college experience I probably would tell myself to choose another college. That even though its a small school and looks great it costs to much and they don't help that much when it comes to financial aid or keep the campus safe in the winter. That I could get more financial help in a Wyoming school. Even though Dana College is very well known in Iowa and Nebraska for its education and you are most likely going to get a job out of college its not the money loss or the attitude and disrespect of other students and staff thats supposed to help you. I would tell myself to look at more colleges and have more of an open mind with going to bigger schools. Although I have had a great time here and made some great friends, maybe I would have had a better experience somewhere else.

PIcking what college you will attend you need to think about what kind of environment you will be most comfortable in. This means a large campus, small campus, or some where inbetween. After you have what size of school you think you'd like to attend you can consider prices, but in my opinion you can't put a price on one's education. Other things to consider are availability of essentials that one would need. As a student, you need to consider distance from home if you are really close with your family, to some that is the deciding factor. As parents you need to let your children make the choice of where they are going to attend college because they need to be the ones that are there and going through the college experience. They have to make it what they want and they can't do that if they don't like the school.

Both students and parents should take much time and consideration when deciding on a college education. College is not something to be taken lightly; it is a blessing and a privilege that much of the world will never experience. Students should be sure that the school offers programs of interest that will be most beneficial to them as future graduates. Parents should be supportive during this time as the process can be frustrating for the student. It is an extremely vital time in both the students and the parents lives but can be very rewarding in the end.

Just because your friends are going to a college doesn't mean you have to attend the same one. Go wherever you feel comfortable. ALso roommates are not a bad thing. They can help you adjust to the college environment. Try the roommate thing for your first year. If you find that they are not your thing, then you can request a single room.
