What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Catherine

I am in a sorority, Sigma Kappa. It has been one of the best experiences since I have been here. I have met some of my best friends on my hall in my dorm. We all leave our doors unlocked and people enter and go as they please.

Ariel

Greek life is getting bigger on campus. I am in Sigma Kappa and unlike other sororities, we don't really have a stereotype or mold that everyone fits.

megan

greek life is almost all of my social life, some are regular drinker, some you don't have to be. once you turn 21 there's a big bar scene and its a good, fun, and safe atmosphere that takes you all over the city. within the greek townhouses everyone leaves their doors open and there's a real sense of family. the city is a huge part, the festivals, museums, events, speakers, everyone comes here. for a politics major it's perfect! my closest friends range from heavy party-ers to non-drinkers. cocaine use is prevailent. many kids have expendable incomes from mom and dad so that helps. people are competitive and smart- its the first time in my life i've been surrounded by motivated and intelligent people. good grades are important and cool. the dating scene is mostly random hook ups, few relationships.

Paige

i am a part of greek life and so the greek social scene is the first, and loudest, social scene in my life. i enjoy all the activities, not just the parties but the philanthropies and fundraisers as well. also, the many girls in my sorority participate in many different activities. just last week i attended one of my sister's play performances and it was amazing! although being greek is a large part of my life here at GW, it definitely is not something that is required of the students. unlike some schools, it is very easy to make friends and find things to do on weekends even if you are not a part of a sorority or a fraternity.

Parker

I'm involved in Greek Life and I really like it. It doesn't take over the school, you definitely have friends and activities outside of the sorority, but its still there if you want it. Greek Life here is growing every year, some see it as a good thing, some think our campus isn't big enough for such a large Greek population - its nearly at 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}.

Lauren

I am in a sorority, which has provided me with a fantastic social life. I feel as if my opportunities are truly endless - but that has little to do with GW and more to do with the fact that I am a social person living in a fabulous city.

Ashleigh

Greek life is the most popular group of organizations to join on campus. Students definitely leave their dorms open, especially in the freshman dorms. Speakers are popular because most of the students are very motivated. People party a lot because the school isn't strict at all. There are no RA's... just House proctors... so they can't even write you up. On a Saturday night, you don't have to drink. You are in a huge city and have endless other activities to participate in on or out of campus.

Lindsay

There is so much to do! Always speakers on campus and tons of activities and organizations to participate in.

harriet

There are tons and tons of guest speaker who are really famous that come to GW.

Steve

I would say there are four types of groups here: Greek life, athletes, non-Greeks, and foreigners. Of course some groups over lap, but that's how I would label everyone here. Being Greek, my social life revolves around my fraternity and brothers. I mostly only hang out with sorority girls because we do a lot with them. A lot of students leave their doors unlocked, but this can be a bad idea. Not because we're antisocial, but because of theft by living in the city. GW takes pride in hosting a lot of speakers, especially when it deals with current events, business professionals, and politics. We are very passionate about our Colonials, especially basketball (since we don't have football). My and my friends' philosophy is: work hard, play harder. We'll study as much as possible on a Tuesday or Thursday and then go out pretty hard. Being greek has a main affect on this because we're always together so we go to the same places mostly every week. I would say I and others go out about 3 times a week with different levels of how hard (Friday's are generally pretty slow). Being in the city gives us a lot of options of going out to bars and clubs, but also restaurants and places to hang out. For example, on nice days people like to walk around the Smithsonian and the National Mall, or play a sport on a local field.

Thomas

Greek Life isn't a huge percentage of campus, but the most active students tend to be Greek. Greeks hold lots of events on and off campus and drive the social life. The conduct tons of fun philanthropy events on campus and have a large visibility. They have tons of their own traditions for the fall and spring and provide the most traditional college experience (drinking, formals, house parties, sports, rush, skits, ets). Basketball games are definitely the most well attended, but I've been known to head to a soccer game on our Mt. Vernon campus from time to time on a nice fall afternoon. I also go to volleyball games because I know the girls and they're close by. The sports teams kind of act like a fraternity or sorority themselves. There's a whole sports scene of student-athletes with their own social network, traditions, and drama. I think other students really get into clubs and networks of friends they made freshmen year.

Harper

gw has a great social life. Greek life is fantastic here and it makes a big school small.

Andy

The athletic events at GW are hit or miss, depending on how well the men's basketball team is doing that year. Greek life has become more popular, and there are many activities and events that are put on by the houses on campus. People party Thursday, Friday, Saturday and will go out to the bars on near campus on Tuesday.

Bill

Fraternities and sororities are popular on campus, but defintiely not the only forms of activities at GWU. I took advantage of being in a fraternity, and it has opened me up to a lot of different people and further opportunities at the school.. Athletics could be a lot better

Tyler

Going out to bars

Jack

Greek life is rapidly growing. Parties are easy to find in georgetown or adams morgan. we usually party tuesday, thursday, friday and saturday

Rob

College Democrats and College Republicans are the best known and most joined organizations on campus. We have the largest College Democrats in the nation, and the #1 ranked College Republicans, so we literally have the biggest and the best. Greek life makes up about 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body, so it's there if you want it and not if you don't. Greek life at GW is unique however. Our greek organizations make sure, through philanthropy events and association with other organizations, to contribute a positive role to the campus. There is so much great theater, museums, and monuments throughout DC, as well as cool jazz clubs and student-run events, that you can always find something to do on a saturday night without drinking.

Ben

Bars are very popular.

Ash

A lot to do

Alex

Fraternities/Sororities and Sports teams are the most popular groups on campus and play a large role in the social life of students on campus.

Tate

Greek Life is increasingly strong, however there is an element of the "club" lifestyle. People often separate these two, but they are the two strongest party realms, and many people overlap both

Shawn

need more freedom..upd is annoying

Robb

EMeRG is awesome.

Phil

something for everyone...greek is growing

Charlie

Social life revolves a lot around D.C., with a heavy bar and club scene. Greek life is very fun, but we can't have parties in the fraternity and sorority houses because they are University owned, which provides for a somewhat unique Greek experience.

Bill

Good social scene, greek isn't huge but has a great presence on campus

Ash

Sororities and Fraternities play major roles in social life here at GW, but there are many other ways to be social without being involved directly with Greek life. There are many different outlets here in Foggy Bottom and Georgetown that offer a broad range of social activities.

Angelica

The dating scene at GW is pitiful. All the girls at GW are 50 times prettier than the boys at GW, therefore the same group of attractive guys at GW has been with every girl, can get any girl he wants, and knows it. The Greek system at GW is a perfect example of this. Girls from the same soroities end of up gettign with the same guys, because the options are so limited. Even when you do find a good guy to date, the odds are almost 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} that he has hooked up with 2-3 people you know personally. Everyone here drinks like a fish. You virtually have nothing to do if you do not have a fake ID. Tuesdays are a great going out night, along with Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays varry, some are awesome, some can be lame. I love to go to Georgetown bars, whereas the other half of the school loves to spend a grand on a table at the greasiest club in DC. My favorite part about GW is how the kids that love to flaunt their money and talk their shit are the trashiest people in these clubs and bars. Have some class, if you were raised with any.

Adrianne

greek life is a big deal here but you can get involved with just about any student org and find your niche.

Jordan

Fraternities and sororities have been steadily gaining in importance at GW. They now basically run the SA, which is nice because I'm a Greek, but also unrealistic. Most dorm students leave their doors unlocked, but probably not open. Security to get into dorms is very tight. The dating scene is very lopsided. The ratio of guys to girls is something like 40:60, and probably half the guys are gay. Not exaggerating. So if you're a guy, the dating scene is pretty freaking sweet. If you're awake at 2am you're either studying or shitfaced. Athletic events are not particularly popular, especially because we don't have a football team. People party pretty often. On the weekends we drink. During football season we also watch football while drinking. If you're not drinking you're probably watching a movie in Georgetown

Josh

A lot of people get involved in student orgs, social life is fun especially the Greek bar scene

Jordan

There is always something to do here. Regardless of what group you belong to or what activities you like to participate in, something is either always going on at GW or just in DC in general. Greek life is also amazing because it gives you a chance to really get to know people really well, it always gives you something to do and it helps you maintain a group of friends that are really close, which helps when there are so many people at the school.

Jesse

bars, clubs, some house parties

Marissa

Guest speakers are one of the major highlights of going to GW. I just saw Ted Turner speak last night and went to a private ceremony afterward. I've heard national and international speakers, former presidents, Hollywood celebrities - there's at least one well-known speaker on campus every two weeks. There are also student organization events and the GWeekly email that comes out every Monday is always full of interesting events. Most of my friends are people that I've lived with. You can have a closed living environment or a very open, social one, but make sure you and your roommate feel the same way. The social scene ranges from frat parties every weekend to free movie premieres at the local cinema. Washington, D.C. is full of amazing nightlife and cultural opportunities. You must go to a fancy performance at the Kennedy Center at least once and check out the smaller theaters in Chinatown, as well. If anyone is awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, they're almost definitely working on a paper. Or playing guitar hero.

Jerry

College Democrats are probably the biggest group on campus. I'm the president of a fraternity so greek life is important to me, but greek life in general is kind of watered down compared to a state school because greeks aren't the social planners for campus recreation. Therefore, the biggest fraternities on campus aren't those who are fun or popular, but those who are GW poster children, they follow most rules and are generally pretty bornig. The fun ones are the smaller ones and are either going on or coming off social probations. The wild ones are unrecognized and are a liability for the university eventhough they're not official. The Panhellenic Association is a mystery to me and I'm deep into greek life. I have no idea how they operate. There is a big chasm between the Multicultrual Greek Council and the other social IFC and Pahnel organizations. It sucks because we talk about how diverse our school is and all this garbage, but we don't act on it. We care about men's basketball and thats it. Our women went to the elite 8 and I didn't even know until we lost. We have lots of guest speakers, but that's because we're in DC and people care about issues. I don't date at GW, too much drama. Its easier to have a drunken hookup and then try to build a relationship than to actually be interested in someone and gradually get to know them. (That is a "GWorld" thing to happen) My closest friends are in my fraternity. We pledged together and though we have different interests, and are from different areas of the country, the pledging process worked and we'll be friends for life. I will be up with them on a Tuesday at 2am smoking hookah, drinking beers, pulling an all nighter. People party when they can, it will be random and sporadic. I've seen hung over people on a Wednesday morning...seriously, who drinks on a Tuesday evening?? If you don't want to drink at GW, there are plenty of concerts or theatre performances in the city. You have to check the Washington Post on Fridays, the Weekend section has a ton of information on things to do. Because this is GWorld, people won't do that, they'll just drink with their friends. When I'm not on campus, I'm with my family, I have my parents, aunts, uncles, cousins that all live in the area. I actually know my way out of GWorld and appreciate "real" people every now and again.

Royce

Greek life is very fun at GW, although not needed to have a great time. Students are involved with sports teams, dance teams, political clubs, and other organizations. People are really grouped based on their main activity. I met my closest friends in my sorority, although we all were friends even without it.

Dale

Everyone has insomnia. The average time to go to sleep is 2am, homework or not. Greek life here is what you do to party if you don't like clubs or dorm parties, especially as you need a fake for the clubs and dorm parties are often busted (not that that matters too much here, as there's an amnesty program). Its $5 a head for males, free for females, and the frats aren't lame and kick people out.

Harper

-Popular orgs: Sorority/frat, Political, sports popular -Freshmen year, dorms mostly left open, after that, ur on ur own -Basketball games popular when they are good -Guest speakers, concerts popular (Fall fest, spring fling) -Not too much dating -Meet closest friends freshman year -Party every weekend thursday-saturday -Greek Life, kind of quiet, but many students are involved, but mostly kept to themselves -Can go out when its warm to bars if over 21, or some lounges, clubs over 18

Carl

There is no one club that dominates all others on campus but activist groups and social groups are very influential. Academic groups are somewhat tossed aside. Most people strictly attend basketball games and few other sporting events. Guest speakers are very popular and almost nobody goes to the theater. People party every weekend and frats and sororities are actually larger than most people will tell you. There is almost no drink less partying at G.W. The dating scene frankly rocks if you are rich and have "game" but a majority of the most beautiful girls in school frequently go to clubs or at times fraternity parties. The best bet to meet a girl is either at a frat, in class, or in some organization. That being said this a hookup school and few people have relationships with kids in school.

Zach

Greek life is growing in popularity and has proven to be a great outlet for students who don't want to wait in line just to pay excessive cover at pretentious clubs.

Alexis

most popular: it all depends on the group of people you hang out with. If you liek fraternities, pike and phi psi are big ones, but it seems that only guys in pike like pike (besides for girls liking pike). and if you like sororities, then you can take the reputation of Coke head with kappa kappa gamma or complete slut with delta gamma. -im involved in the business fraternity and it's co-ed and really fun. we have just as much fun and partying as we do with professional things. -most students on my floor leave their doors open most of the time. -basketball games are the most popular and if they are a good team, then they are really crowded and exciting. -guest speakers are great! i have seen the dalai lama, katie couric, barak obama as well as many others. -certain people date and others are all about one night stands. -my closest friends actually live across the hall from me. -i generally dont go out on tuesdays because i have an early class on wednesday but i hear tuesdays are really fun! -people party on average about 3 nights a week. -fraternities (god forbid you call them frats) and sororities are definitely there if you want the greek life, but you dont have to join one. im not in one and very happy about it, but my best friends are all in fraternities. -last weekend: fraternity party, bar, beer pong in thurston. -umm..see a movie? or a show? on a sat. night not drinking. -off campus, you can eat, see movies, go to the eastern market, go to museums, go to the kennedy center, go to capitol hill, white house, etc...

Harper

Again, the most popular groupings would be in Greek life. I am involved in Greek life as well as the College Democrats. Some students leave their doors open and some don't, depending on which dorm and the personalities of the residents. Athletic events and theater are very popular, while guest speakers a little less so. Most of my friends are from my dorm, and if I'm up at 2am I'm probably hanging out with them. People generally party 3 of the 7 days a week. Last weekend I went to a Frat party. As a freshman, I don't do a whole lot off campus.

Andy

I am in Greek life. The greek community is very close knit and it makes it nice to see familiar faces around campus. If you are in greek life it seems like the whole school btu if you arent it probably doesnt matter. the social scene are a lot of clubs and bars. a lot of the social scenes have to do with drinking. the library is also pretty social haha.

Diana

Greek life is becoming increasingly popular on campus, which might seem strange for a school so urban in feeling. Being a member of a sorority is a great way for students to feel part of a smaller group within such a daunting, city-oriented campus. GW has great visitors from the political, international affairs and media fields, but the school does not well-publicize these oppportunities. Interested students must seek them out. Because GW is located in Washington, DC, the social scene is focused on the city. The bars, clubs and restaurants in Georgetown, Dupont and Adams Morgan are filled with GW students on the weekends and some Tuesdays. However, recently more have an effort has been made to keep the social scene on GW's campus with fraternity parties, etc.

Lauren

kappa kappa gamma. doors closed athletics not important, went to only a few sports games party on weekends, thursday sororities and frats are important, we go out to clubs and lounges in adams morgan and k street area

Meredith

When you are involved in greek life, it seems like a huge social seen. There are so many things to do any weekend being in a city. The going out social life involves going to clubs and bars. A fake id is crucial.

Emily

College Republicans and College Democrats are big on campus. IT depends on which dorm you are and and even which hall of the dorm, but in my experience, a lot of students leave their doors open and want to meet pepole. Atheletics aren't a huge deal, but basketball is pretty big on campus. There's always lots of theater going. GW has an amazing schedule for guest speakers. We have a unqiue opportunity in DC to have guest speakers and GW offers amazing opportunities to see some great thinkers, big names, and people who have done some amazing things. At 2am on a Tuesday, people in my dorm are usually settling down for the night or finishing up some homework. In my experience, a lot of students are involved in activites through the evening, come back to the dorms and relax and socialize for a little while, and then buckle down on homework. There's always a party going on somewhere because we live in the city and can head out to a club. Thursday, Friday and Sat are the big party nights and you can always find a dorm party, frat party, or club to hit up. Sororities and Fraternities are definitely a presence on campus but the majority of people aren't involved. There are usually good frat parties to hang out at and they do a lot of other cool things on campus, but you don't need to be involved to have a social life. I don't drink and so I was worried about coming to the "DC Party School" but there are plenty of people who don't drink but are still very social and fun. You can always go to a club or frat party and just not have a drink, if you like dancing. There's so much to do in the city that you'd have to try not to have something you could do. There is theater, great food, the monuments, movie theaters, and all kinds of things you can do without drinking and if you are looking, there are plenty of people to hang with without drinking as well.

sondra

Greek Life is popular... i'm in kappa kappa gamma. it's really great because its a terrific rescource that if ever i need support i can look to my sorority for it. people party on tuesday thursday firday and saturday nights. thursdays are the biggest best nights though. if your awake on a tuesday you could easily be studying but you ould also be coming in from marshals.

Emily

I'm involved in Greek life which is fun in its own way, but I am thankful that I always have several other outlets with friends not affiliated.

Ali

Greek Life Kappa Kappa Gamma- well organized, great resources rarely pretty popular, guest speakers are- theater not so much dating scene is meeting people through friends through kappa kappa gamma either studying or at the bars PIKE st pattys day party for one depends...but 2-4 times a week important to me...important for social scene go to Georgetown Bars go bowling, see a movie, hang out with friends really everything and anything you want
