What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Daniel

Going back to my last year as a high school student, I would tell myself "There is so much more ahead of you that you need to start planning for now." I really slacked when it came to planning for my education after high school. I knew I would be pursuing a degree in computer-related field, but I did nothing more than dream about it. My high school, Longview High School, offered an amazing amount of scholarship information and applications for seniors to take advantage of, but only very few did. So those few who did apply for scholarships ended up receiving most of the money with little or no competion at all, no thanks to my lack of enthusiasm. I let every opportunity pass by me that would have lifted some weight off my shoulders financially when it came to paying for my college expenses. Now that I am struggling to make ends meet, I absolutely regret not taking advantages to the many scholarship opportunities my high school provided for me my senior year. If I could go back and give myself some advice, it would definitely be to plan ahead.

The first semester of college is the start of your future life. Everyone is willing to make friends and get in with the crowd on campus so you will have your opportunities to meet people; howerver, the main focus should be on classes and keeping up with a schedule. The schedule is the start of being organized and organization is a great key to success. What this means is showing up to classes on time and knowing how to balance classes, homework, and extra curricular activities. Easier said than done, the best way to achieve success is to set achievable goals. You'll find that keeping your GPA up sets better oppertunities later in life, so with that said, set goals to turn in all your homework on time and study for every test early on. The earlier you study for a test the better results you'll achieve at the end. College will help growth in maturity and responsibility. Ultimatly college is a critical stage in your life filled with excitment, fun, and eye opening experiences. Make the most of every day and count yourself fortunate to to be able to have this special oppertunity in your life.

I would tell myself to relax and not to put so much stress on myself. That everything would be ok, and that I'm not alone fighting to be all I can be becuase I would soon find out that I have alot of love and support backing me. I would also tell myself about all of the scholarships that I now know about and how serious they are because it really would help my parents out, and would keep them from worrying. Then I would have say that even though it may be tuff at times that I would get through them, and as long as I try my absolute hardest in everything I do, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Then I would have to leave myself by saying, enjoy these years of college and understand how fortunate I was that I have the chance to go to college because there are so many people in the world that would give anything to be where I was.

Their our several things i would say to myself if i was a high school senior. One of the issues i would stress is telling myself that a two year college is a great college to attend if your not sure where you want to go after high school as far as a University or if your not sure what your major is. Going to a two year college will let you know if you are built for the college life or not. When you come into a two year college its kinda of like high school accept the only issue is you have more time and you have to learn how to spend that wisely. It is a learning experience because you realize where you stand after two years and they help you if you do wanna continue to a university they will get you where you need to be. I loved my experience at Kilgore College it has made me a better person and i know where i stand in my life. I would also tell myself to keep my gpa up because that is very important factor in college and helps you in your future.

The advice I would give myself about college life and making the transition would be stay to yourself do not worry about what everybody else is doing and what other people think. Do not do anything stupid even if everybody else is doing it, so what if they do not like you, never do drugs or alcohol. Never let anybody talk you out of something you want to do. You are your own person and nobody can change that. Also study hard the higher you get your grade point average in the first semester the harder it will be for that grade point average to drop. Some classes offer study sessions, put your big ego aside and attend those study sessions they really do help and you would be suprised how well you do when you attend those study sessions. Also be nice to your teachers, participate in class. With class participation you will most likely remember the material that was taught then if you were just taking notes and texting during class. The teachers will be more than happy to help you succeed you just have to go out of your way and prove that you want to succeed.
