Meredith College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Josie

I would start off by saying, "find a school that your gut tells you is right." When i first saw Meredith college I automaticly fell in love. Also i would say, study hard!! It seems so hard to do at first, but in the end it all pays off. Especially when you get that first A on an exam.

Be sure it is the right college for YOU and not someone else. Do not attend a college simply because your parents want you to, you must go where you feel it is best for you to grow and be sucessful.

phuong

Make sure you meet some of the students and professors at the school you want to attend. Look at the size of the campus, the classroom, and the surrounding environment. Also attend a day of class of the course that match your major.

I would advise students to find out what they want out of the college experience, and I would advise parents to encourage their children as much as they can to visit different colleges and sit in on at least one class that they might be interested in. The thing that helped me fall in love with Meredith College was visiting and seeing the campus. For finding the most out of the college experience I would advise students to get involved with what's going on on-campus. Meet as many people as possible and make friends in your classes. The friends you make in college are most likely going to be your best friends later in life. I think that the best thing a parent can do is to let their child go. Call them maybe every once in a while to check up on them to make sure they aren't sick or anything, but let them have their time. Don't be a helicopter parent! Students love your parents and forgive them if they have a hard time letting you go. Study hard and play hard!

go with the college and best connects with you and were you know have that that ability to concentrate but still have a social life

Amy

Be yourself, and don't ever let anyone talk you out of being "you." It's important to remain true to yourself, and stay confident in who you are! :)

Jasmine

Make sure you can afford the college that you decide to attend and make sure the distance is a good distance that you will not be too home sick

Take a minute to think hard about what you think is best for yourself. Visit the college as often as you would like and you might even want to sit in a class to get the experience. Attending an all womens college is like a huge family because there is so much going on on campus and there are so many activities and clubs to be involved in on campus. Participating in on campus activities will help you make new friends and evolve into a better person.

The first key to finding the perfect college is starting early. Make appointments to visit the colleges you want to apply to the summer before your senior year in high school. This will give you time to see all the campuses, meet the staff, and narrow down your choices. Signing up for visitation days is another great way to meet potential peers and current students. Look into the campus' majors and resources. Visit the departments that you are interested in if you know what you want to major in. When you find the right college you will know in your heart. Parents will also get a good feeling from the right college if you feel like your child is excited and will be safe. It is important to make sure you are making your decision for yourself and not because of your parents or other friends. When you've found the right college, you will know. It is so exciting and you will be ready to learn. This is how it has been for me anyway and I hope it is the same for others too. It is important to remember to step out of your box and enjoy it!

Katie

Go to the school you feel the most comfortable with.

Shonta

Talk to other students at the colleges to see their views and opinions about the college. Plan out how are you going to pay for your education. Also I would tell them to get involved on campus.

Kimberly

When choosing a college, it is not just where you are going to school. It is where you are living for four years of your life, where you will make all your friends, and where you will become an adult. Making a decision on where to attend college is very important. The best advice I have as to how to choose a college is to visit the campus and ask yourself "can I see myself living here for the next four years?". Students should not choose the college that all their high school friends are choosing. They should not choose the school that their parents want them to go to. The decision should be completely based on where the student thinks that he or she will suceeed and be happy.

Pick a college that suits your personality and style the best. If you feel the need for larger classes and less personal attention from professors then perhaps a larger university is the right one for you. Meredith College is a smaller establishment of about 2,000 students and has a more personal atmosphere. I feel like there I am not just a number and that my professor's know my name, they know when I'm in class and when I'm paying attention. Meredith had an excellent educational program as well as many extra curricular activities to get involved with on campus. They allowed me to be whoever I wanted when I came here and that's what I loved about this school. I have never questioned my decision in picking my school and that's what parents and students should feel like whenever choosing the right institution for higher education. I feel at home here and that's the number one thing upcoming freshmen should consider when visiting colleges and choosing schools.

Visit your college choices to determine what best fits your personality. When you find the right school, you will just know it, and there should be no doubt in your mind that you are making the right decision. Do not make it an individual decision; discuss it with your family to determine that this decision will be good for your entire family. The last thing you want to do is to move off to college with there being hostility in your family because you chose a school that your family did not want you to attend. As for your college experience, it is what you make it. If you want to have no social life, then just stay in your room and study all the time, but if you want to make the most of your year, venture outside your four walls and meet new people. Join clubs that are aligned with your interests and get involved and meet new people that share similar interests with you. Get involved in entire campus activities and then you will feel as if you are a part of your entire college community. Remember, college is what you make it, so make it good!

Whitney

know what you are looking for in a school and what size you like. Also if you can afford it if you do not get much aid and what activites you want to be in and what you want to major in.

Meghan

Follow your gut! You will know which school is right for you!

Rachel

I think that the student and parents should look for a school that is a good fit for the student and that is affordable for the family, whether they have financial aid or not. I think that a student shouldn't pick a school based on what other students want. I also think to make the most of the college experience, you have to participate in your classes and try to figure out what you really want to do with your life without the influence of others. I also think it is important to stay focused on your academics and to also have a social life, but to not make that your focus of you college experience.

It is very important for a student and parent to find the right college and make the most out of the college experience. When picking a college, tuition should be considered. Pick the school that caters to your financial ability. Another aspect of picking the right college would be location. It is desirable for most students to live close to home. Attending an "in-state" college will eliminate your out of state tuition and allow you to go home often. The next thing to consider when picking a college is the "Campus environment"! It is very ideal to go and view the college of your choice and see if it suites you personally. Make sure that you are satisfied with the schools transportation, space of the campus, distance from grocery stores, drug stores etc, ethnic diversity, college dorm rooms, saftey of the campus, parking spaces, activities and social gatherings, general boy/girl population etc... Last but not least, make sure the college of your choice has your desired major! Once you follow my advice, your college experience would be a blast because you have picked the RIGHT school! College prepares you for the REAL world. That is the ultimate experience!

Listen to your instincts.

The best piece of advice I can give to future college students and their parents is to visit the school you are interested in going to more than once and make sure that you can handle the demands of the campus. If you want a smaller campus with a more personal connection between faculty and students, consider small schools or private schools. Don't look at a school with a large campus if you cannot handle it.

Shelley

Every school is different and every student is different. The most important factor to success in college is making sure that the school fits the student. Every parent would love to think that their child will excel anywhere but that is simply not true. The students and parents need to honestly assess the choices without the threat of reproach or disappointment. For example, a student who needs more attention and help with school work should consider a smaller college so that the help will be avaliable. However, if a student will not commit to hours of homework then a larger school may be better since professors will not be able to handle as many assignments due to the much larger class sizes. In addition, when a student accepts a college because of pressure from parents or others, that student tends to not dedicate themselves because he/she does not view the experience as a personal accomplishment but as an appeasement for someone else.

Salma

def. try meredith! because like i said, its not really a big school. and every one knows u there, and people are just so friendly and kind!...also professors know what they're doing! its great! u just have to try it!

Megan

Spend the night at the school in a dorm and go to class for a day to see how you fit into the school

Lindsay

Make sure you are comfortable with the size of the campus. You don't really think about it beforehand, but when you are stressed from schoolwork and studying, the last thing you need is to have to run to classes to make it on time and then get lost! And the bigger the campus, the harder it is to get one on one time with professors and faculty, not to mention other students. Always talk to students at the school beforehand and ask their true opinion of the school. Make sure the college offers the activities and majors you would be interested in.
