The best thing about my school is the combination of where it is situated and the ambience that surrounds it. It resides in a little town that is cute and homey while the campus itself is a gorgeous array of fountains, trees, hummingbirds and roses; you can see the whole city from the oasis of nature. The proximity of the city makes many things available to us without us having to feel like we are surrounded by a city. The city holds many opportunities, interships, and excitement that we can be a part of while having peace around us.
I absolutely love the students at Occidental. From the day I visited and toured Occidental's campus, I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone was. Still, I thought to myself, "Maybe they are just being nice because I'm a visitor..." My doubts were instantly shot down on my first day of college. Everyone, including the professors, remained genuine and kind. Even if a student does not know the person walking by, they still smile at them. Though this may seem trivial, it often makes my day just that much better.
The best thing about my school is the attitude of both the other students, as well as the professors. I love that my peers are very passionate about what they are studying, and are eager to discuss these things outside of the classroom. In terms of the professors, so far I have definitely felt that everyone wants to be teaching, and they all have a passion for not only teaching, but more importantly, the subjects that they teach. And I feel that this enthusiasm definitely is noticable and rubs off on the students.
It is close enought to a lot of outdoor recreational spots, to a big city, small classes and the professors are for the most part glad to speak to studentes. There are also great study abroad oportunities offered or available for students to apply for. It is prestigious but not academically unfriendly or hostile like other big name schools, but still could be intimidating if you do not come from an academia oriented family.
It's location. Occidental is small oasis of calm in the centre of the bustling metropolitan city of Los Angeles. It provides easy access to Hollywood and Beverly Hills but is also removed from the distractions that can accompany these areas. It's the vest of both worlds.
Going to college near a very big city (LOS ANGELES!), gives you a million and one opportunities to volunteer, work, intern and do research--the only challenge is getting off campus and taking advantage of the opportunities that exist.
The intergroup dialogue program which is offered by Occidental and is not offered by many other campuses. It allows for an exploration of diversity and issues of social justice.
The best thing about Oxy is the friendly environment and community among the students and faculty. The weather is also amazing.
Professors are intelligent and promote critical thinking.
