Sarah Lawrence College Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Erica

Yes.

Ben

- More or less.

Alex

Sort of.

Royce

Sometimes, however there really is a large mix of people on campus, and not always as much "that guy/girl" as is portrayed.

Charlie

No. Of course there is that population on campus and it sometimes seems to be dominating. But almost none of my friends in the last four years can be described that way.

Alex

No. As a queer student, it has been really hard finding a queer community, so I have had to make my own.

john

some are. some arnt.

Parker

Well, some people party, some people do drugs, some people do some excellent gender work (we have the first graduate degree in Women's History and an annual Women's History conference), and everyone is free to be with whoever they want (we also have an excellent LGBT studies program, AIDS and Trans activist groups).

Dani

Somewhat, but taking them as the whole truth would be denying the positive aspects of the campus and the many nice, un-pretentious people who just come here to learn. I'm usually offended when a non-SLC friend points out a SLC stereotype. I think this campus has a really bad, unfair reputation.

Tessa

Basically, with a little hipster flair.

Charlie

well, it's about 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} female. There is a lot more open discussion about sex and sexuality than one might find elsewhere, and it's a welcoming community, so we at least certainly have more openly LGBTQ people here, come spring you do see either more people out on the lawn(s) than you knew went here, and/or a whole bunch of people you have never seen before and didn't realize went to your (small) school.

Andy

In some cases.

Katherine

Yes and no. Of course there's a large majority of sexual exploration and openness, but there's so many other aspects of Sarah Lawrence such as its emphasis on writing and communication with others, on fostering a love for learning, on finding out what makes you tick (which for a lot of people is definitely their sexual preference), and on exploring you as a person, your interests, your motivations, your passions.

Molly

Yes

Jasmine

Yes and no, I would not say they apply to every student on campus but many students would identify with one or more of these labels.

Dawson

Either our motto is inaccurate, or I'm about to get 50,000 dollars back!!

Mike

In a word, yes.

Audry

While we have our fair share of druggies and lesbians, it's completely innacurate to think that they make up the majority of our population. What school doesn't have people like this? I think students tend to lean more towards the arts, but that doesn't mean we don't have pre-med and science students.

KJ

A lot of the student body is pretty cold and unfriendly, people wear fancy clothes and you know a lot of the girls have money. It took me a while to make friends, there is very little sense of community in the school overall.

Emmie

To an extent, some are more accurate than others but overall, SLC students are such a diverse group of students in terms of interests, economic status, etc.

Russell

Sarah Lawrence students are indeed very liberal, but the LGBT population is only relatively large.

Tate

No stereotype is completely accurate. It's true that a lot of people smoke here, it's true that there is a lot of pot-smoking, and it's true that there is a lot of sexual promiscuity on campus. But not EVERYONE takes part in that. It is also true that there are a lot of "hipsters" on campus, and some people DO go around with an air of superiority. And most of us were "freaks" in high school, but that's one of the reasons why we all bond-- it's partly over that! Not everyone is gay, though there is a large gay community on campus. Most everyone here is very liberal. Most of us are not easily offended unless the attack is personal or intended to hurt a group of people. Most people here are really cool and awesome in his or her own way.

Blake

Yes, for better and for worse

Tristan

somewhat. you have your token hipsters. they are annoying but you learn to love them. they are uniquely ours. you'll always have your crazy hippies, granola eating, vegan, chaco wearing, kids. we've got girls and guys, hetero and queer. you learn to love them too, but they aren't as over-zealous as the sort you'd find at Reed (haha). Sure the odds are good; straight males have no problem finding eager young women. Not all of them are as weird as they are lead to think when they first arrive. But then again, we are getting normaler each year. We don't have more queers than hetero. No one is outnumbered. Males in general are outnumbered, but what's new? It seems like we have a lot of queers but we provide a comfortable environment and there really aren't as many as you'd think. And no, not everyone is rich. About half of the student body receives some sort of financial aid. I myself get about twenty thousand dollars in loans each year to make up for what my financial aid doesn't cover. But you do have daddy's little girl with her plastic and wads of cash. Its not too bad.

Blake

No everyone here is gay and wealthy, but it's pretty liberal. I considered myself fairly liberal, politically and socially before I came here, but I've actually grown more conservative. Not from any bad experience, just from maturing.

Anna

no stereotype can be 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} accurate, but these are about as close as it can get. people are from more diverse backgrounds than the stereotype allows, but their perspectives are often freakishly homogenous.

Kris

Everyone has their own stereotype! It is on our nature to look at someone and stereotype them. OF COURSE. we are the rebels, liberals, different kids, hippies, and rich kids, among many.

Harper

A lot of them are unfortunately. There are a good deal of hipster assholes from LA, mixed in with hipsters from every other place. There is a large gay population, but if you're a femme lesbian looking for someone like you, you're probably not going to find them at SLC!I personally, since I'm a freshman, am not sure if SLC prepares you for a career in the business world... And the school certainly has a large group of weirdos (goths, anime freaks, punks, etc etc)
