What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kim

Getting a college degree has always been a must in my family of doctors, pharmacists, and college professors and while being a competitive figure skater has taught me time management, being in college taught me how to priortize even better. I've been able to learn new things every day, broaden my mind, and discover the unknown. Being surrounded by other bright and creative students has helped me learn and grow much more than I imagined, especially since I was homeschooled throughout high school for figure skating training. Without attending college, I wouldnt have met some of my future bridesmaids and guys I know I can call if my car breaks down in the middle of the road. My classmates are people I can trust and my Professors are genuinely good people with kind hearts. Going into a career in broadcasting is tough and cut-throat, but my experience in college combined with figure skating and years of pageantry has prepared me well.

I have gotten a sense of responsibility. When you go to college, at first, you don't realize that you're actually fending for yourself now. You have to wake yourself up and get ready for class. You have to make time for meals. You have to do your schoolwork. You have to have the motivation to succeed on your own. There's no one in the background telling you to do all of these things; it's just you. It has been valuable for me to learn responsibility, because it's the only way you can succeed in life. It's important to know that there's not always going to be someone there to support you and make you get down to work. You have to intrinsically motivate yourself to succeed or else you won't.

In order to help you understand what it means to me, it is necessary to know that I transferred to UT Austin from Baylor University. As a lesbian, BU was awful for me; I was expected to either lie about who I am or to simply not talk about it at all. It was a dark and depressing year. When I got into UT, everything changed. Diversity was embraced, and people actually appreciated my uniqueness as a lesbian and as a person. I found my community, but I also found others quite different from me that I have learned a lot from them. I found professors who weren't afraid to talk about the corruption of power, the inequalities found in the world, and the changes my generation would be entrusted with making. I found many clubs and organizations dedicated to causes I would not be aware of had I not attended UT. The university is undoubtedly preparing me for my professional life; the real world is full of diversity, problems, and people that are not to be ignored. This is an amazing place to be, and I would recommend it to anyone.

The University of Texas at Austin has showed me that we are all human in the sense of how everything in the world works. There are so many different types of people out there in the world but by attending UT Austin, I can see that we all experience the same things in a way that makes us similar. I believe that every person is indeed unique but I also believe that we are very similar. Realizing this is helping me become less of an introvert and helping me take a step out of my comfort zone. At first, I honestly was concerned about finding a connection to people to gain more friends but I know now that that should have been the least of my worries. I also found a stronger connection to God especially from living away from home. I'm glad UT has so many churches available on or near campus for different religions. Without having my parents, I turn to God more frequently when needed and I know He'll always be there. UT opened my eyes to see things from different perspectives and has also strengthened my relationship with God which are valuable to me.

So far I have recieved a lot from my college experience. First I have made many new friends who I hope to have for life. Second I have shown my step-children that you can accomplish your goals no matter how old you are. Third I have shown myself that I can achieve my goals, I am smart enough, and I can succeed. My husband and family have been very supportive. I now look forward to earning my Masters Degree and being able to eventually share my knowledge with others as they work to earn their own degrees.

Ariel

It's almost too hard to quantify what I got out of my college experience. I came from less than desirable circumstances, including an abusive family background and poverty. I started out my academic career at a community college, where I worked my tail feathers off to get into The University of Texas at Austin. It was well worth it. I met so many people from all over the world, gaining cultural experiences I had never had before. I was able to learn from educators who were recognized experts in their fields, and I challenged myself to take their criticism constructively and really learn from my mistakes. I was able to overcome profound shyness through the mentorship of my professors and the schoolwork I was required to do while attending the School of Journalism. Years after starting school, I had blossomed from a girl that barely spoke to anyone, to a reporter talking with politicians. Ultimately, going to college did not just increase my knowledge as a scholar, it improved me as a person and allowed me to have opportunities in life I never would have had without my degree.

So far college has taught me how to be a more independent person then I already was. It has also taught me how to juggle school, fun, friends, and work all at the same time without going crazy. Without school I would not know what to do with myself because it has been such a huge part of my life for so long. College is the place where people find themselves and make their own destiny and I am on my way there.

Although I've only been attending college for a semester now, I've gotten so much out of this experience. I've made so many new friends. My outlook on life, in general, has changed dramatically. I am more open-minded and more aware of the world. Joining the Rugby team here at UT has improved my health, social skills, and teamwork skills. I have learned to depend on myself for things rather than calling my parents for help. I understand that is is all up to me now to have a bright future. Opportunities like studying abroad are coming my way. I plan on going to Australia for a semester come my junior year. College opens your eyes to a whole new world. Everything you thought you knew will probably change a few months in. I would recommend coming to UT if you want your life to improve in aspects you never thought possible. This university has people from all over the world studying. I love college, and this college in particular. I like to consider myself lucky to be a Longhorn. Hook 'em.

April

The one thing that I have gotten out of my college experience is the professors I have had during my years here at UT. All of the professors in the Kinesiology department are so supportive of their students and their progress they make in their class room. They truly care about developing students who are going to suceed in their post-college life. The professors are avaliable to students, and it has been really nice to know that I have contacts here that I will ahve the rest of my life. Nothing can take away what I have learned here and the relationships that I have developed while attening this university. The research that these professors do here also helps students by showing us the newest research and fidings to help further our education. We also play a littlle football too, and thats always fun!

Alexandra

My college experience not only helps me prepare for the future, but it also helps me to become an adult. I have grown in so many ways, from my learning process to my priorities. Mom and Dad are not here to bail me out of an issue with a teacher or any other type of problem. I came from a much diversified high school and in college you meet all types of people and my upbringing has helped me relate to people different cultures, race and religions. College is a stepping stone to be able to handle my future in a small atmosphere or a large one - our choice.

The experiance I got got from college was that I have to manage my time. Everyday I have to study and read constantly. My college experiance has been great and I feel that I am learning a lot and notwasting time. I want to learn as much stuff that I don't know.

Payton

In my so far brief college experience, I have learned college is a completely different ball game from high school. Full time student means literally just that. So many times in the last four months, I have pulled all-nighters praying that next day's test will be a victory on my part. Teachers see my face three hours a week in addition to the amount of time I spend in their office hours and at the end of the day, they still do not know my name or recognize my face. They do not care if I pass or fail. I am just one student, and they get paid anyway. I have also learned that college will create an immense financial burden after graduation. Personally, I will be over $80,000 in debt when I receive that diploma. I have learned that family means more to me than I ever thought. After high school, I was psyched to leave home. Being away makes one really appreciate what they used to have, not to say I would ever move back home, but it is nice to know it still exists for me. College really opened my eyes to things unseen.

Going into a career in fine arts, it would be easy to say I'll just skip university all together and jump straight into a career. After all, how can you teach art? But that would have been a huge mistake. In the three semesters I've spent at UT, I've learned more than I could have possibly learned working in community theatres. In my first semester, I gained confidence in my artistic and analytic abilities and began to feel as though I had a true future in theatrical design. In my second semester, I started my portfolio and resume. And now, in my third semester at UT, I've taken a class on draping and patterning women's clothing that has opened my eyes to all kinds of design options that are available to me as I consider different aspects of a character including age, body type, and personality. In the end, I know I'm going to be extremely happy with my decision to attend university and my career will be better for it.

That is quite possibly the easiest question one could ask someone like myself. I have gotten the most important attribute that could ever be extracted from college; the gift of knowledge. From the different places to visit, the invigorating atmosphere, and a refreshing breath of social diversity, I have cultured myself. I come from a conservative small town with minimal ambition, so I enjoy the opportunity to meet people, which I know in my heart will hold the future of America in their hands. Some say ignorance is bliss, but that is an ignorant statement in itself. Live for the future of mankind.

Travis

Success is not just a word, money in your pocket, or what you have accomplished. Success is the passionate following of one's beliefs in order to impact and help the world. At the University Of Texas at Austin, success is not merely merit based scores, Gpa's, or degrees. Success at UT is the use of your education to create, lead, innovate, and help the world today which is in a state of low welfare, and rapid changes. The University of Texas is in no way limited to just an academic institution, the university hosts and helps to harbor many different groups of all different genders and races that want to share success not with themselves, but with the world. Whether it may be small steps to help save flood victims in Pakistan, or biking to Alaska to raise awareness for cancer, the university has helped to broaden my perspectives of the term success in the world of today. The value of education, innovation and leadership the University is teaching me, has taught me to believe that one voice can start a revolution of unity and change that the world of today is in drastic need of.

An important value in my life is being in control, being in the driver’s seat and taking charge. I am very goal-oriented person. I decided to attend Kaplan College to take charge of my life so that I can obtain a career that will help me be successful and help me give back to family for all they have given me. I have found much enjoyment from learning the curriculum and applying my knowledge through class assingments and interacting with my peers. Attending college has been valuable because I feel I am on the right path to accomplishing my goals because I know that with an education anything is possible. I have limitless possibilities. Education has opened the door to my future. I feel that I am in the driver seat of my life.

Anne

I have discovered new things about myself and I am now sure of the direction I want my life to take after meeting the people and having the experiences I had in college. I entered as a hopeful film student who rarely exercised and didn't know the first thing about nutrition. Now I am getting my teaching certification in Biology, majoring in Youth and Community Studies, and the co-leader of an athletic student organization. In addition, I am taking the first steps to creating a social service nonprofit, with the goal of empowering people through movement, education, and holistic wellness. I am thrilled and excited about these things, and I would not be on this path today had I not taken the time to explore in college. I have two more years before I can graduate with my teaching certificate, and finding funding for them is a little bit of an obstacle. However, I truly believe the journey has been worth it - I am grateful to have found the place where I belong now, and every day I wake up thinking about how to make the future brighter.

Sarah

This is the third year I've been at UT. I have taken seventeen courses related to biology and biochemistry, or approximately 1,800 class hours, and 680 hours in a research lab. To be entirely honest, I have learned more in those 680 hours spent doing research than in my entire academic career. You can sit in a lecture three times a week, no matter how captivating, and read a thousand-page textbook, or you can cover the exact same concepts in a lab, where chemicals and DNA sequencing and fluorescence microscopy and larvae aren't just ideas but things you manipulate everyday, things with data and dollar signs and time attached to them, things you need to understand before you can work with them. That's how I learn.I don't really know how to express the feeling I get when I'm in the lab or the passion I feel for science in general. The closest thing I can say is this: research isn't a job. It's what I want to do--and am well on the way to doing--every moment of my waking hours for the rest of my life.

Crystal

I never knew how much I relied on everyone, especially my family. My college experience most definitely allowed me to start growing up, to take matters into my own hands. It has showed me that not all people are exactly the same. We don't all come from a similar family with similar traditions. It has shown me that we can challenge everything. We can start forming our own thoughts.

Rebecca

I have learned some new life skills. I now have better time management and am more independent. I was able to try so many new things, and found where my passion truly lies. I had thought I wanted to go into translation, but I took some business classes and loved it. I now plan to open my own used bookstore. I was not sure if I really wanted to go to college, but it has provided great experiences.

With the honors programs, it's like going to top college with the resources and social life of a huge university -- a rare combination, especially for the price. While being part of a massive alumni network is great, (perks include being able to walk into a bar anywhere in the country wearing a longhorns tshirt and know I'll have someone to share a drink or talk football with and having the "that's a fantastic honors program -- my daughter attended" conversation during an interview) I got the greatest value from the teachers (they're the top in their fields but not arrogant or inacessible -- I'm still friends with many), diversity (with 50,000 students, you're exposed to all walks of life without even trying; more so if you're hunting for free food from student organizations), and the variety of academic opportunities (I was encouraged to take risks and experiment instead of narrowly focusing on my major. Nuclear physics or boxing journalism may not come into play in my job every day, but those electives gave me skills I use frequently, like an open mind, critical thinking, research, and communication -- plus I'll beat you in trivia).

Amy

My college experience has been filled with learning, passion and self-discovery. It certainly has been an eye-opening experience. I love the University of Austin and all it offers and I have truly fallen in love with the city of Austin itself. The University offers more than anything imaginable-the food services, amazing recreational facilities and a multitude of opportunities to get involved. After long weeks of studying and testing, there is always something to do. I love going to concerts here in the city, running alongside the lake, and going downtown. I am currently studying in the College of Education. In the three years that I have attended, I have never felt that I have learned so much. The education I receive here will truly be of value as I begin my career and move to the next step in my life. I am blessed that I am able to receive this type of education and enjoy doing so.

Corey

College has been valuable to attend for several reasons, and I have gotten a lot out of my college experience. First, college teaches you responsibility. You do not have a parent or guardian to watch over you. This responsibility you encounter will help you transition easier into the real world. Additionally, this responsibility will help you maintain a real job and make smart decisions for your future. College will also challenge you to think creatively. Your brain will be challenged in ways that have not been challenged before. This time will also give you time to challenge yourself and think about how you want to impact the world. College gives you the ability to challenge yourself and think what job or duty you are best suited for. Last, college gives you the opportunity to shape yourself as a person. You are exposed to events on and off campus. These activities expose you to make new friends, learn more about yourself, and help shape the community. These activities and events expose you to people different from yourself. College is a place where people from all over come together. You are exposed to the "world" in a different way.

To describe briefly what I have gotten out of my college experience, I will begin with the most important being a very high level of academic scholarship. I have learned to better myself in every way possible with the resources at hand, as well as help my fellow students in any way possible so that we can continue to make the United States as well as the world a better place. The most important subject of life that I have learned here is that this generation that I am among is the future. We have to work as hard as we can individually as well as with each other now in order to create a successful world future. I truly believe that with working with professors and the school , I am now knowledgable of this fact. Secondly, I have come to know who I am. I am faced with problems and delimmas that are faced by our society. By being knowledgable about subject matters, I am able to form my own opinions and create my own beliefs. This experience has taught me that I do have a choice. The choices I make are what make me.

Arjenis

I attended my College's orientation and it benefited me well. I met potential classmates and former ones, recieved educational workshops on how the place is setup for newcomers, and established some ground with my cordinator and instructors.

Myra

I have learned to really be confident in uncomfortable situations whether I am the only person with my same color or beliefs. I have learned to make a change and not just sit back and do nothing. To make friends with different races and cultures. To be more active and to STUDY!

Nicholas

College allows you to become your own person and gives you the oppertunity to learn your limits and learn from your mistakes. I have learned that being on your own is a touch challenge, but eventually a high school student has to learn how to make it or break it in the real world. However, college has also taught me that you are never alone with the friends, teachers, and mentors you gain all thoughout college.

Chase

My college experience has served to greatly expand my world view and my knowledge of subjects ranging from mathematics to economics. It has also been a way to mature past that teenage stage in life, while not being completely without resources to depend on. I've made friends and contacts which will last me for life, and as such, the social networking opportunites of college are some of the most valuable assets one can attain for the future. I believe college has also greatly reinforced my life dreams, which is to practice internation law, ideally for an organization such as the International Criminal Court. College has not only gotten me closer to my dreams, but allowed me to experience things which confirm that I've made the right choice in my life.

Emily

As a junior, I considered dropping out of high school. Discontented with attending the same place every day with no change or feeling a purpose of how this would apply toward what my actual being, I desperately wanted something more. Instead of living in a mind-numbing mockery of life, I wanted to experience all corners of the earth, see all there was to see, and learn what the world was telling me was there. And in college, that’s what you get. High school gives the education necessary to attend (which is why it’s also important), but any university student can tell you that no matter what you imagined college would be, this is what it is really: a no-strings attached existence for four years of your life during which you become who you've always wanted to be. You say, do, and most importantly, THINK what you want and no one tells you otherwise. You grow unrestrained within the vast, begging-to-be-filled expanses of your mind, because at last, you are allowed a right that has always been denied: Independence. And that, if nothing else, is why it’s important to go to college.

Alexander

I have come down to earth a lot, not that I was stuck up or anything before but I came from an area that was predominantly wealthy, and wasn't used to being broke. Although I must say it is easier to live at home, I have had a great time adapting and have become a fan of garage sales and promotions! Also I have learned how to balance my time even more so than in High School, I became very involved and had the opportunity to take on projects and run them myself. Although I enjoyed everything I took on, I learned very quickly that without the risk of bad grades and teacher nagging, some club members simply dissappear, which resulted in a lot of extra work on my part. Definitely don't bite off more than you can chew!

Brad

I have learned an abundance of information that will be valuable for myself in the future.

Sara

My college experince has definitely changed my life forever and helped me to grow as a person. When I started out I was unsure of myself and who I was in this big world, but through my time at UT I have become more dedicated and determined to find my place. It has not been easy but I know that the more I experience the more I will grow and become who I'm supposed to be.

Claudian

i have not yet gone to college as i am going this fall but i think that its important to attend college because not only is it the best way to get farther in your career but it also helps in the emotional way that some people who have attended online school or are homeschooled dont get the chance to develope. They dont get the same opportunities as those who went to a public or private school but in college they learn the skills they didnt get and they also learn new ways to solve problems, learn time management as well as everyone else who went to school and they learn social skills. Also, if you do not have a job they have some posted about local ones that are close to them and possibly could work around their school hours and help you to find jobs in the career you are going into. College is very important and i think everyone should go because it does more than just teach more material, it helps you out in life more than you could possibly imagine.

Ashley

I start college on July 6th. i havent strated yet. im going for medical assistant its a year and three month program . All hands-on.

Grace

I am still a long way from completing my college career, but so far I have learned so much. In the beginning, I just viewed college as a once in a lifetime experience. Which is partially true, but when my parents went bankrupt and I had to quit school for a year to work eighty hours a week, I realized how important higher learning was. I have even become homeless so that I can put myself through school. For many kids, getting an education is just another step they have to take in life, but for me, it is life. I may learn later that is not the most important thing in the world, but right now the only thing I can do at age 22 is make sure I can advance academically. This experience has left me with a even stronger passion and desire to broaden my knowledge. When everything was taken away from me, my uncle told me once that the one thing no one can take away from me is my knowledge and strength. I truly believe college will help me become a person that has overcome all odds.

Adrien

Not until I started college did I learn the irony of an education. It seems that the more I learn, the more aware I become of my own ignorance which consequentially makes me all the more curious. It has been an eye opening experience--in relation to my own knowldge or lack of--to say the least. I spent two semesters at the private university of Capital. It was at this institution that I acquired a newly found thirst "to know". Unfortunately, the means to keep my at the institution were not readily available which resulted in my transferring to Columbus State Community College. I am currently attending C-State with intentions on transferring to a four year university. I have a piqued interest in the behavioral/social sciences as well as some economics. College is not only a place to experience diversity and new ideas, it is the stepping stone for future success. An education is impertive to self-actualization and it is through education that we as a society have made progress. A nation's wealth is in its scholars and to be a part of that wealth is invaluable.

Stuart

Attending the university, I have gained a sense of accomplishment by completing my BFA. This is something that eluded me and seemed impossible a few years before. The university changed my ideas about the direction I was going in for better or worse. On one hand, that means certain things I wanted were not available to me. On the other hand the University introduced me to new skills, and new technologies and new opportunities that I never would have considered before. In doing so it has transformed who I am as a person and an artist. I began this degree later in my life than most, and before I began it was difficult to build a circle of friends. Coming to school gave me contacts with new friendships and I feel made me a much better and better socialized person as a result. Academically I have a much richer degree of knowlege and skills and thrust myself into many new talents, not just in my degree plan but in other fields. My art classes helped me find a niche that only I can give the world, in a field where being unique is of utmost importance.

I have attended San Joaquin Delta college and it has been a very valuable experience for me because of all of the diversity on the campus. Everyone has a different background and story from you, which makes up an interesting learning environment. From my experience I have learned to have relationship over difference; so even if someone is culturally, ethnically or spiritually different from me, I still try to have a relationship with them. My time at Delta has held valuable "real-world" application and has taught me many things. In this world, if you are not social and do not know how to work well with others, then you are deprived of key working elements. In most work environments there will be people that you do not get along with, but you will have to work with them. This is why relationship over difference is the best thing I could have learned.

Ruchi

Being away from home for the first time really taught me repsonsibility. For the first time, I started doing laundry, cooking, and not procastinating in school work. I learned how to choose friends from right and wrong and became stronger as a person. Living on my own, I realized to continue to do what you have a passion for. Serving to the community has always been a part of my life. The first semester I was in college, any free time I got, I wanted to study and only study. I became depressed not volunteering or having a social life, so the next semester I joined a service sororrity which gave me a chance to do what I love doing most: service and having sisters that looked out for me! I am really glad I chose to go here because it gave me a chance to learn from my mistakes and meet a diverse group of people. U.T. Austin is a well rounded university, being both ranked for academics and athleticism. This university has made me optimistic and more outgoing. I commend U.T. for providing me with great resources and a safe environment to live and study in.

Vladimir

Being a college student helped me out in mamy ways, for example: Demonstrated accuracy attention detail and ability to work in team environment. Exercise initiative, well-organized and efficient. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Dependable- can work without supervision. A dept at both oral and written communication. Interact effectively with individuals of all levels. Attemding college has been valuable because it could helped me achieve my goal, which is to obtain a professional growth in an organization with opportunities of advancements.

Melissa

I would have to say that my time spent in college has been the most valuable experience of my life. My four years at the University of Texas have not only provided the mold for the person I am today, but it also opened my eyes to the world around me. Never before had I been immersed in so much culture and activity as when I first began my undergraduate studies at UT. It was amazing to see so many different types of people, who would band together for so many different causes, be it football or photography club. The spirit of my university has never left me, and I don?t think it ever will. UT has become my family, friend, and second home. It has inspired me to think creatively and to look for avenues beyond normal expectations. Many of my classes challenged me to the fullest and forced me to learn how to manage my time and studying more efficiently than ever. I have learned that hard work and dedication do pay off, and if I can believe in myself, anything is possible.

Monika

The first moments for me in college were admittedly frightening. Although I had spent my whole life being affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin (my father is a professor, my four older siblings all attended UT), it was difficult for me to let go of the life I led - a sheltered life. I grew up incredibly close to my family and to the friends I made in the small private schools I attended, as well as deeply rooted in my faith. Living in a dorm away from Mom and Dad forced me to grow up into a responsbile adult; which may not have happened if I had not left. College classes have taught me what it really means to work hard, but it was the large campus and wide variety of people that taught me how to respect people of all walks of life and be more open to the gifts and talents that they had to share. At the same time, I have grown deeper in my faith by coming into contact with peoples of other opinions and faiths. College has strengthened the foundations I was raised on and made me the adult that I am today.

Carolyn

I have learned many things about myself and my endurance level for work and stress. I learned to not let much stress you out, and to be calm in stressful situations. I got to see if I was cut out for college and if it was suitable for me emotionally and financially.

Madison

My college experience has opened up my eyes to so many new things. The people that attend UT are all so smart and diverse and being surrounded by these people has truly made me a more well rounded individual. I now see so many opportunities to change both my life and the world, and I have these opportunities because I have attended college here. I have learned a lot about responsibility and that it takes both self respect and self discipline to be successful. College has been thus far, the most rewarding experience of my life. I am learning not only incredibly interesting stuff in the classroom, but I am also learning so much about the joys that life has to offer, and there is no way I would have all of these experiences without attending a university.

Nichole

I could have never imagined that my world could have been opened up the way it has in such a short period of time. When I started college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, or who I was for that matter. In one semester I realized that I can work hard to earn a degree in which ever field I want and have the type of lifestyle that I used to just dream about. I used to just think college was going to be hard and never thought that I would enjoy it at all, but I don't think those things anymore. I've met people that have given me new perspectives on many different things and if I weren't in college, I may have never had these experiences. If my first year of college has opened my eyes up this much, I can't wait for the next year.

Angela

My mother has always told me that her biggest regret in life was not graduating college. She always knew she was better than the menial job she has been at all her life. Since I was little, she drilled into my head the importance of going to college. ?Do not make my mistakes,? she always told me. When I got to high school, I made it my goal to get into a great college and make her proud. I have not even been at the University of Texas at Austin for a year, and I know that what I have learned and experienced here so far has had such a dramatic impact on my life. Although sometimes I do not always understand or agree with what I am being taught, I know that I am learning things that will benefit my life and help me to achieve my dreams. To me, going to college is an amazing opportunity that I would not dream of wasting. I have learned in these few months what my mom was talking about: that I am going to college to better my life and make my family and myself proud.

Mark

Currently I must say what I have gotten out of my colleger experience , is the difference in learning styles. One in College you must change your study habits. You must be willing to make changes as to time to study. it takes time and effort to make the time to study. I think you must be willing make an extra effort to study, make sure that you have a place to concentrate and take the time to read the different assignments. while in High School you may be able to get by, In college you must make an effort along with concentration for schooling.

yiyi

Since college, I have learned to be more independent. I am living on my own and because of this it has helped me become a better and stonger person as a whole.
