What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Thomas

As a high school senior I just wanted to leave. I had a business job I was working for and I was going to continue in for the rest of my life. I saw so much opportunity and believed I did not need any college help to continue my dream of becoming rich. I thought there would be no reason to explore options in college, that I did not need any of that. My guidance counselors seemed like a waste of time for me nor did I believe they had my best interests in mind. I was wrong, I should have listened. I went on my way as a high school graduate thinking that this life would be great, I was moving along with promotions at my job without a college degree. My grand dream of the company I worked for decided their dream was over and sold themselves to another company, which did not have the same views. The dream of advancement ended there, and I found myself stuck with nothing more than a high school dimploma and a shattered dream. I should have known this my senior year, and planned better, rather than transitioning to college now.

If I could go back I would tell myself that college is a place of open possiblities. To not worry about where you are going or what you are going to major in. College is the place to test the waters for your major. Take the classes you have to have to graduate but also take some random classes. Classes that will introduce you to other fields you might not think you would like. College is fun, and an excellent experience for anyone, and in the end you will learn something if not in class you will learn something about yourself that is worthwhile. That is what I would tell myself as a senior.

Fawn

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior the first thing I would tell myself is to take education seriously. You need a college education in order to get a good paying job with benefits. You want a job you love and not one you dread going to everyday. You need to sit down and really think about what you want out of life. Don't think that you will find a husband that will take care of you. Things happen such as divorce and death and you need to be prepared even if your husband has a good paying job. When you go to college you will learn about yourself and who you are. Getting a college degree gives you a sense of accomplishment and boosts your self-esteem. If you plan to have children, you want to be a good role model for them and getting a college degree is one way to do that. Life is hard. Don't make it harder than it has to be by not preparing yourself by graduating college. Be strong! You can do anything you put your mind to!

Justin

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a High School Senior, knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition the advice I would give myself is to not put all my eggs in one basket. I would tell myself to apply for ever scholarship that I possibly could and to open every door that is presented to me. I assumed that my Track & Field career would carry me though College and that was not the case due to me being diagnosed with Crohn?s Disease while in college. I would warn myself to have as many options as I could in order to make College a fun experience and not one full of stress.

Tasha

Well I would tell myself to start earlier like right after I had my son to get started. Dont put it off you can do it just have faith in yourself. Even with three kids you should know that you can do it and if you get started befor J.J. becomes moble.

Melanie

If I could go back in time and talk to myself I would stress how important college is. I wish I had completed my education years ago when I did not have to work full time. Although age has given me wisdom and insight into the importance of education, I could have accomplished more. I would tell myself, its ok to take time off but then jump back in the game. With an education there is so much more oppertunity for growth in your professional and personal life. An education can put you in a rewarding career where you can make a difference and enjoy it at the smae time. College is not like highschool. In colege there is always a group or an area to belong. The diversity of acedemics and extra-curricular activies is astounding. College not only prepares you for the real world, it provides a community of support, interests new ideas that you have never thought of. Also, the friends you make in college are friends you will have for life. The bond you creat with them is very strong. I would tell myself, open new doors, take a risk, create great memories. Go to college!

Joshua

Start immediately! Don't put it off. I would recommend starting at a local community college to stay close to home. By doing this, it would allow me to have close guidance from my parents. Also, the cost of community college is a lot less than that of a university. After getting an Associate's Degree from a community college, the next step would be finding a university that specializes in the career path that I have chosen at that point in my life. Early in my college career, it would be best while taking basic classes geared towards my associate's degree, choose a career based on interest, need, financial security, and retirement.

Miykael

Do not hang-out with Earl. He is bad news and focus on Dentistry early. Do not be affraid to be smart, get your degree while others plan to be the next "Puff". You have all the tools you will need to succeed, just believe in yourself. Oh yea and be on time for work!

Tim

Going back in time that would be a big benefit. I was a bit of a rebel, so i would have to tell myself to pay attention and don't be affraid to take advice. Try to experience as much as you can in the field you are planning to study for. Try not to space out highschool and college by 8 years. The partying you are doing isn't going to help you when it comes to being a role model for your children. Taking risks isn't always bad as long as they are calculated. You are not meant to work in a factory so stay on top of your game when it comes to your school career. You may not be a model student but when you see you children for te first time you know in your heart and soul, providing for them and showing them the way is a great reason to set your goals high and keep a level head. The road is going to be bumpy but remember the glory of being a father will will you through storm.

Stephen

Assuming that I could go back in time and talk to myself as a senior high school student I would encourage to not let up no matter what the cost. The temporary satisfaction verse the long term goal and achievement of not completing college and having to pick up again after many years is not worth it. My advice would be to endure the transition, stay connected with your classmates, guidance counselors and teachers. If necessary seek out tutorial assistance and maintain a balance of steady educational goals at the forefront of your moral compass. No mater what - don't give up or sell yourself short of completing your degree early in life. The more you learn, the more you earn in a society that demands the value of an education. Keep constant contact with your educational direction knowing that it is only a few short years to achieve greatness and success once you have completed the toal college life experience and degree.

Shermeka

I would have told myself to not fool around. Friends will come and go but your education is here to stay. I would've told myself to work harder and create better study habits. I would've kept myself focused and more on point. I also would've told myself to go straight to college full time instead of waiting.

Mimi

My number one piece of advise would be that there is no right time to go to school and if you are smart you will start right away and get it done. If you wait you will regret it and wish that you would have known then what you know now. When you are fresh from high school you have no responsabilities and all the time in the world. If you wait you will only make it harder by adding a family and life obligations to your list of things to do and won't be able to concentrate on on your studies the way that you wish you could. Start school now, don't wait!

Regeania

If I could go back into time and talk to myself as a highschool senior, I would tell myself to focus on my grades, stay involved in school activities, save extra money from my part-time job. I would go on different college tours to see what each college has to offer and to see how one different from the other. I would apply for every scholar that I can. I would have taken the SAT twice if I wasn't happy with the first scores that I received. I would get all of my Financial Aid and school information in before time and I would not have waited until the last minute. I would have also asked my counslor for more information about college. I learned that you pay for what you don't know. If I would have known then what I know now, I would not only be a proud parent of 4, but I would be a proud successful college grad and business owner with as few students loans to pay back as possible.

Lindsey

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to never give up. Getting your degree takes time and patience, something I often forget from time to time. I would also tell myself to relax, and take life one day at a time. College is often overwhelming, and I need to remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel and I will get there. It takes time to get where you want in school and to keep my chin up. Deciding to futher your education after high school is a big decision and one that I would never change, but yes, it is very expensive and challenging and often stressful. So my biggest piece of advice I would give myself is, keep your chin up and keep trucking because I going to get to the end of the tunnel no matter what.

Amberbriana

I would definately have to say that I would tell myself to pay more attention and study hard. Listen to my teachers and counselors and strive for excellence. Being in college makes me feel so good about myself and the future I am looking foward to for me and my family. I do not know why everyone else would not want this same feeling. I feel on top of the world when I am studying knowing that one day, having a college degree will better my ilife for myself and my children. if I could go back and whisper these words into my ears, I would have continued college right out of high school. I would tell myself to set a great example for my children and other family members who have not continued to broaden their educations.

Going to college is one of the most important factors that affect the rest of your life. Completing college should be a top priority. With this in mind, looking for a college based upon its reputation is not the best way to decide upon the college to attend. Look for a school that best fits your personality and will keep you interested in finishing the degree program. The cost of attending a college should not be as high of a priority. An expensive college may be worth the cost if that school has the ability to keep you attending until you get your degree, but if it doesn't keep your interest, it is just a waste of money. The same is true of a more budget conscientious school, but again, if you don't finish, you still have wasted your money.

Shaina

If I could go back in time and talk to myself about college I would tell myself how important it is for me to go because without a higher education I wont be able to find a good career and and make a stable income in my future. I would tell myself to do research on the school and to not choose my school based on an impulsive decision.I would give myself the opportunity to acknowledge the priviledge I have that children in other countries dont, to better myself and my future. I would show myself the opportunities I could gain and financial aid I was eligible since my family wasn't supporting my decision to go to school. I would give myself the opportunity to realize that getting involed with activities in school can help better my chances of a scholarship and help pay for my tuition and books. I would remind myself that after all the physical and mental abuse I suffered as a child, that, that wasnt the end of my life and I have so much more to see and exerience when I go to college

Brandi

If I could go back to being a senior in high school, I would tell my self to buckle down and study harder. I would tell myself to take advance placement classes. I guess I would also have told myself to save every dollar I could so that I could have afforded to go to college after highschool. I also would have taken high school a lot more seriously.

Lauren

Going back in time I wouldnt tell myself anything. I wouldnt give myself advice, so that I could be ready for the work that it will take to earn my degree, and have the immiturity out of my system. Starting school four years after my graduating class really made me understand the value of an education. Working for everything that I have, as well as paying for school to me makes it more desireable, and makes it feel like a achievement. I feel that there really isnt any good advice to give myself, for I have already gotten myself were I am today. Personally I feel this has been the right path for me.

Sherri

I would grab my shoulders, shake me , and say; put your mind to work, your smater that you think, ask for help, theres a lot out there, keep you mind on school, stay away from the boys, college will be fun if you let it! you will make great friends and have awsome career possabilities, and a fantastic future. Start applying for as many scholarships as you can now, you will need them! be safe, be smart and you will go far. Have faith in your self and the people around you.( they will be there for you!)

Joleen

I would reassure myself of the importance of education. After High School I got a job making great money and thought I was done. It wasn't until I got pregnant and had my own son that I no longer was available to work the 70 hours a week I was working and living in an aggresive neighborhood in Las Angeles, California. I would say, Joleen, you need to think about the future. I would give myself several senarios as to why it is important to go to college. I would be my own educational advicate. I would tell myself how easy it was to enroll. I thought I knew it all in High School and I did not see the importance of continuing my education. I would give myself the advice I gave to my nephew who recently graduated, we live in a very competative time. So many people are going into the work place without going to college. At first your personality and hard work will get you by however, it is your educationa and degree that will help you climb the ladder of success, instead of staying in the same place year after year.

Tracie

The first thing I would keep telling myself is that I can do this. I can go to college and have the support I need when I am scared to think this is to hard or to much for me to handle. I would also tell myself not to be shy to ask for help. The staff is here for me and if I don't understand something or am having trouble with something, don't be scared to stop and ask for help. No one will make fun of you for asking for help. The last thing I would keep telling myself is that everyone there has been in my shoe's. Everyone that is just starting out has felt what I am, and it will get better as time goes on.

Tambrea

There is no better time than the present to pursue a degree in higher education. Although my spare time will be limited for a few years, the opportunities and chances for advancement in the future will be unlimited by completing my education while I'm young. I will remember to take time for others during this journey. Find extra-curricular activities and clubs on campus that can help me expand my community involvement. Learn to cut corners on expenses by making wiser and better choices. Most of all, I will listen to the elders in my life who want to share their experiences and guidance so my errors are fewer along the way.

SHEENA

I spent my senior year having a good time and not really worrying about how I am going to get ways to pay for college. I automatically assumed my mom had an account set up for me that would allow me to go to college without having to resort to scholarships. Unfortunately I did not have that luxury and by the time I realized I could get scholarships, half of them I could not qualify for because I had to be a high school senior. I would tell myself to really take the time and get as much information about scholarships that you can. College is soo expensive but necessary for a good career in life. If you take the time and submit to scholarships it will pay of in the end and I wouldn't have to worry about this expense that I am going to have to pay once I am out of college. If I knew then what I know now, I would be finished with school with little money owed to student loans.

Teana

Teana be happy that you have an easy senior year in front of you, however, become a well rounded student. Now is the time to go out and find organizations to volunteer with on a weekly basis. I know mom did not tell us that her finances would be a burden on our chances of finishing college, but now that you know take time to get as many scholarships as you can, so that you are not working for your BA degree at twenty-three years old. It was hard for me to leave CSU Northridge because mom could not afford it, but if you read this message in time, you can get enough finances and graduate by the time you are twenty-three and be working hard at or dream career of being a Marriage Family Therapist. Good luck!

Patricia

Patty, you are worthy. You have your whole life ahead of you, and no, 24 is not old. You do not need to put so much effort and emphasis in being jealous of those other popular girls. Having a date, or a boyfriend for that matter, is not the end all of your high school years. Give yourself credit for the intelligent, pretty and empathetic person that you are. Look to the future! You know if you put your mind to it you can and will succeed at whatever it is you set your heart on. Believe me when I tell you that getting married and having babies is not a race. In your generation women will be pursuing careers and getting established, owning homes and then starting their families in their thirties and even forties. Advancements will be made in science and technology to allow child birth into the age of forty and people will be living far past their seventies! So slow down, take a breath, concentrate on your classes and focus on college and plan for a full and rewarding future.

Shani

What are your plans after graduation? What further career would you consider pursuing? Now that you are a senior in high school make sure you have all your credits for graduation. If you have not already, send off college application and apply for scholarships. Now that I am in college I find myself saying I know this or should know this, I took this in high school. College is not just for the highest G.P.A anyone who are willing to study and genuinely make a change for themselves for a better future should apply. I did not do as well as I liked to in High School I often treated some classes as if I would never see the information again I was wrong. While applying for college I knew there would be challenges and I accept those challenges and overcame them. I study extra hard to keep up due to some slacking I did in high school, but I am now trying to maintain a 4.0. I have set my academic standards high. Never get discourage, if you have big dreams, reach for them. The stars are the limit. You can do it!

Larry

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a senior in high school ,One of the first things I would say,You better on go now instead of waiting all the jobs in the furture are not what they are .Hamady Bros will be out and Kessels will sell out to Krogers.Fisher body will be torn down and all the shop jobs will bacilly dispear.Flint will be a town hit hard by recission and colleges will move in.You will get married and have 2 children no bigboy job Delta Tube job or In terior Automotive job.So Larry of 1982 look into the eye of Larry Kelley of 2010 >Going to college know will be the things you need.Study harder ask for help.If you dont belive im you here my driver lincences, the wright the number hasnt change and neither has your social security number. Rember this in the summer of 1982 Mike Rogers one of your class ates will not live thur the summer after the accident Larry rember my words go back to school.

michele

I would tell myself that my family was right. Getting your education is very important in the value of your choices of your future. Partying isn't everything and true friends should want you to succeed in life. Stop being lazy and take life by the horns and get to school.

Susan

I am a parent returning to school to complete a goal of mine and knowing what I know now, the practical advice I would tell the "senior" me, is don't wait! If you decide to start a family right away it gets harder to continue with an education, because "life" sets in, and your education seems to fall to the waist-side. Before long, you are 40 and you yourself have kids that are nearing high school graduation. However, on the other hand, I know a lot more now than I did then. In this regard, much of what I know is that not everybody that received their education right after high school are still interested in those professions. They have changed; their interests then are not the interests they have now, in some cases their education is not serving them well. At this point in my life, I am enjoying what I am learning and I want to learn; not sure that I could have said that 18 years ago. I have zero regrets, but I have a son who is going to be a senior soon, I have and will stand by the advice, don't wait.

Taryn

If I could go back in time to talk to myself as a senior I would tell myself to be patient, that this will be hard but worth it in the end. College life is a lot different than high school, there is no longer someone else to answer to, only yourself. If you fail that failure is yours and yours alone, you must pull from inside yourself and accomplish all the great things that you know you are capable of. This will not be a walk in the park, you will work hard and you will sacrifice some fun to accomplish this task. In the end this will be the best investment of your time that you have ever accomplished, this can take you so much farther than you ever dreamed it would.

Joanna

If I could go back in time I would definately want to change knowing what I know now. At that point I didn't care as long as I passed all my high school classes and I graduated. I wasn't thinking about college all I knew is I wanted to get out of high school. I don't regret my decision, but at the same time I do know that I needed to change. Now I work two jobs having to get up so early in the morning, come home, and then go to the next one just to survive. I always planned on going to school and applying then I pushed it aside. I only took one year off but I pushed myself to apply. I the best advice I would give myself is, work is not everything. Go to college, prosper, and be something more than what you are now. College, in the end, will be worth it.

Serena

As a high school senior, I was at a very emotional, pivotal time in my life. I was a foster child, and although I had taken AP courses, taken the SATs, ACTs and AP tests in order to go straight to college, I couldnt bring myself to live with strangers any longer. I decided to get an apartment, and then had to take in my siblings as they aged out of the system in the next two consecutive years. I remember the turmoil I was feeling, the mixed emotions, and the sense of responsibility I felt to care for my siblings and put off my education for yet another year. I would have to say that if I had a chance to talk to myself as a senior, I would advise myself to start online school as soon as I could, instead of completely putting school off. I would also tell myself to be strong, because my journey has been a difficult one, and I could have used some advice and some love at that time.

Britnei

The most importat thing that I would tell myself is that I CAN do it, it is not as hard as it may seem.

John

I would tell myself and as many other students as i could that there are 2 things that are vital to succeeding in post-seconday education. The first is there is a difference between studying and homework. College requires both. Homework is any assignment given in class you do on your own time. Any and all homework assignments must be turned in because the number of assignments given in college is less than in high school so they count for a bigger part of your over all grade. Studying is going over and reviewing things that have been discussed in class. This is also done on your own time. The second thing I would tell myself is learn how to manage your time wisley. Most college professors are not gonna hold your hand and remind you about upcoming papers or projects due. They have given you a syllabus and expect you to use it. If you are not careful lack of proper time management skills will cause you a great many problems. Use the syllabus and a calendar now and begin to stay on top of things so you are not caught off guard in the future

Shaunte

I would not waste any time! I would get on the road of obtaining my BA in Health Care Management & move on to obtaining my MBA. Time is of the essence now in days! I will then be able to provide my family with a great securtiy support for our future. I will then be able to have a promising career in Health Care Management!

Michelle

I would tell myself to go to school now. I waited to long it proves to be harder the older you get. Don't listen to anyone else just follow your gut and know that you can do it. Make it happen and prove to them all that you can.

Christina

Looking back, I would tell myself to really understand what I learned instead of memorizing the material for test purposes. By really learning and understanding the information, I would have been able to retain more information, but because at the time I was so caught up getting a good grade for the test, I memorized the information and then forgot about it because I had to memorize information for the next test. If I had taken time to just process the information I would actually be able to use the knowledge in the real world and help me in the classes that I am taking now in college.

Raymond

I would simply tell myself to have fun, stay focused, work extra hard on the football field and avoid a girl I meet by the name of Bridget. The whole key to a good college experience is to have fun and get out to social events and watch other sports teams play there games and absorb the college experience. Staying focused and working extra hard simply applies to the football field as I did good in the classroom, but to obtain a better scholarship to a better school and live my dream and lkife goal of one day playing in the NFL. As far as avoiding a girl named Bridget do not get into a relationship with her as I threw my life away by having that relationship. I got engaged and threw out numerous scholarships to big schools because I wanted to start my life with her and go to the same college so we could be together. If I avoided this mistake I would be in the NFL right now living my dream and have the life I wanted for myself and being able to buy the hard working people in my family the house they deserve.

Jacquelyn

Advice I would give myself would be that which I give my children. Do not look at a continuing education as a burden, as you do high school. College education is different, you are your teacher in many ways. You control what you want to learn and how you are going to learn it. There are no teachers breathing down your neck, you are the one who will be responsible for yourself. College is not just an educational experience for those just graduating high school. College is an experience in responsibility for oneself, learning about great friendships and transitioning from youth to adulthood. Do not be afraid of these transitions, they come to you as you do not even notice. As a young college student you will enjoy the remaining part of your youth while looking forward to the rest of your life. You can take this time to build a foundation for everything you may want to see in the future, but also have the realization there will be unforseen events that may command a detour. No matter how many of these detours are ahead, keep your eyes on the road. You will get to the destination eventually.

Corrinne

I took a year off after high school and only managed to get myself into massive trouble; so the first piece of advice would definitely be, ?Get started immediately!? Taking a year off did nothing but give me time to revel in my own uselessness. Instead of floundering without a purpose, I should have been working towards something. I would be sure to tell myself, ?Don?t stick to what you know?go explore.? One semester I needed an art credit and got ?stuck? in a class called The Art of Jazz. Never have I been a jazz fan, but the teacher was so passionate that it was contagious. I also worked on the campus television station for two years. What could I have found had I actually been looking? The most important concept, and the hardest to grasp, is ?Your education is vital.? I let it slide and screwed around, wasting my parents money, until I found in my third year I was pregnant. I had my daughter when I was 23. I could have been done. Instead, I have been a welfare mom or worked two jobs for my daughter?s entire life and am still in school.

Davlin

If I could talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself " Davlin you need to complete college before you get married. You should never let fear keep you from pursuing your dreams. What ever you do don't listen to your parents when they tell you not to become a nurse. This is what you have always wanted to do and you know it ! Follow your Heart!!!!

Catrina

I have often thought about the college related choices I made while I was in high school. And I usually end up thinking about how I would do things differently or I wish I had someone to guide me better in my decisions. I have been out of high school for almost four years and if given the opportunity would fly back in time and help myself. I would go back and tell myself, "Catrina, don't choose the private university, choose the public university that won't cost so much but will still give you the great education you are looking for. Better yet, start at a community college first. It will save money in the long run and you still get a great college experience." In high school I had a teacher that told me, "Don't worry about the cost right now. Don't let that be a determining factor in which school you choose." I would go back in time and tell myself not to listen to that teacher. You can get a good education at any kind of college as long as you do your research and it doesn't have to cost alot.

Tamra

If I could go back in time and talk to my high school self, knowing what I knw now, I would tell myself to work hard at what ever you do. If you don't do it to please anyone, do it to please yourself. Get good grades even if you have no desire to go to college right away because you will desire to go in a couple of years. There are scholarships available to help you to pay for your tuition but you have to have good grades in school to receive them. You are going to need them because your husband's illness will be unexpected. Your children are all going to be gifted and will desire to go to college. They will struggle with their father's illness so their grades will be up and down. They will need scholarships and grants. You will need to be knowlegable about what's available to you and your family. Your family is going to help alot of children with the work that you all are going to do. So work hard and pray hard. Your family is going to need you. Your community is going to need you.

Cheryll

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I'd advise myself to pay more attention in school. Be a better high school student and go on to college after high school. I would tell myself the college life is the way to better paying jobs andthat I can become the teacher that I always wanted to be at lot sooner by going to college right after high school.

Jennifer

High school does not adequately prepare students for college. In college, you are 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} responsible for classroom assignments, homework, tuition, obtaining books, and prioritizing your time. There is no one telling you when to study. I would tell myself to get organized and schedule study time. The teachers go at a fast pace. More likely than not, when you are not attending classes, you are studying or completing an assignment. Another piece of advice I would give myself is to start a study group. In addition to forcing you to study, it can help you understand the material better if you have to explain it to someone else. In this process, you also need to find out how you learn best. Utilize the resources the school offers, such as the library or tutors. There may be rooms in the school's library that offers a quiet place to get lost in your notes. My final piece of advice to myself would be to read my notes the next day and keep reading them every week or so throughout the semester. This will help retention a great deal so you don't have to cram before the tests.

Melina

If I could go back in time and give myself advice about college, the first thing I would tell myself is to not wait to continue my education. I would also tell myself to take my education seriously and commit myself to it 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. I would tell myself that it is ok to have fun but even though it seems like a long time to be back in school the rewards will pay off in the end. There is still plenty of time to have fun with friends but my studies need to be my main focus for now.

Tennille

I would tell myself to remember my goals when things get rough and to never give up. I would make sure that my head is clear and ready to face all challenges that come along with college life. I would also tell myself to never let the advantage of being able to attend college pass me by cause I may never get another chance to reach my goals in life.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself, I would tell myself to consider all options. I have tried the traditional method and the online method. I have found that online is faster paced and works better for me. College is well worth the money and time as long as you go with something that makes you happy and meets your needs the most. I would also tell myself to remember to take time and enjoy life too, because college is the experience of a lifetime.
