What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Edwin

Many of them are just people who like to study and not party a lot. There are rarely any parties that I hear of.

Usually when people hear the name of UC Irvine, they typically thing the school is full of Asians and everyone hear is a Biology major. Also, I have heard people complain that there is nothing to do here. That may seem true, but there is more to the school than the stereotypes you hear. Yes there is a huge ratio of Asian Americans on our campus, but what people do not realize is that there are many types of Asians- from Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Cambodian, Indian, and many more. There are many more ethinicities at our campus. I am a Mexican American. Another stereotype is that everyone that comes to UC Irvine are Bio Majors, which is not true. It is true that Biology is our #1 popular major, but our Second popular major is Undecided / Undeclared. Also, Here at UC Irvine, we offer over 80 Majors and 50 MInors, so there is a huge variety on choosing a major. Speaking for myself, I'm not a Bio major, I'm actually majoring in Psychology and Social Behavior (Under the School of Social Ecology) and minoring in Educational Studies ( Cool fact: we offer two Psychology majors and we are the only school in the west with a School of Social Ecology) Also many complain that there is nothing to do here in Irvine, but there is many things. there are many parks here to go walking, running. There are also farmer's markets on the weekends. The Beach is 10 min. away and we also have shopping centers really close so there are many things to do.

Many believe UCI is an Asian university and that students must all be Asian. This is not true. Although the majority of students are Asian, they actually comprise less than half of the entire student body. There is quite a diverse student body on campus and there is a good percent of Hispanic and Caucasian students. UCI is also believed to be a commuter school. Although this is true, there is a large percent of students who live on campus or in off-campus housing.

UCI is known for it's Asian population, something that demographically might be true, but is definitely not! While they do rep 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body, they do not represent the those that are seriously involved! Look at me, I work at one of our three Premier Commons, I work within Student Government, and am involved with two Campus Organizations! Our demographics do not speak to the campus as a whole, anyone and EVERYONE can be involved with student life on campus. :)
