University of California-Los Angeles Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Norma

I would consider the campus layout one of the less agreeable things about UCLA. The buildings are somewhat far apart and I find myself constantly running from the seventh floor of one building to the first of another in minutes just to find myself with a seat at the very back of the room or no seat at all. Sometimes, I even resort to sitting on the stairs in a lecture room or on the floor.

Mariah

I consider the worst thing to be is that they raised tuiton by 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} to attend my school and other UC's because it basically is taking school away from those who can already hardly pay for college. We were told that as of next year there will no longer be english classes till futher notice and that is not fair to those who will be coming to UCLA in the next years. They are losing a part of their education all because they do not have the money to pay the porfessors.

Devon

I think the worst thing about UCLA is that it is slowly becoming a private school in terms of finances. Out of state students, such as myself, pay triple the tuition amount that in-state students pay ($50,000). While UCLA is regarded as one of the new "public ivies", its public education is what draws people in; however, with recent tuition hikes, UCLA is getting more money from students than the government, technically making it a private institution.

Joy

I would consider the worst thing about the College I am attending is the fact that it is also used as a vocational school for high school students. This college is located at a vocational school and does not give much room for attending students for their college classes. During the day time when college classes are going on you have high school students running in and out. You share a computer lab and parking. The College is growing and definately needs more room for students like myself.

Eileen

The disbursement of financial aid. At UCSD for example, by the first day they already have their financial aid, but here you don't have your actual financial aid until the end of the first week of school, when you're already expected to have bought and READ your books.

Jennifer

Tuition is very expensive and jobs are scarce.

Emily

The classes are REALLY large, making it difficult to stay focused during lectures. Although the professors make time to meet with students with office hours, some professors are hard to get in touch with. In impacted classes, such as chemistry and math, I feel like I am constantly competing with my classmates not only for a grade, but for good seats in lecture halls, and one-on-one time with the professor.

Aida

The worst thing about my school is the size of the classes. It is hard to make the classes more personal and hard to meet new people in classes that are so large. It is also more difficult to get to know the professors, so gettting letters of recommendation for scholarships and other applications is a challenge.

LisaMarie

The worst thing about my school is that the level of difficulty is extremely high, so extensive studying is vital to maintain a GPA that seems respectable to prospective employers. As an engineering major at UCLA, I find it challenging to balance the amount of time I spend studying with the amount of time I spend doing social activities, though that highly depends on the person.

Viktoriya

The recent fee hike is going to be difficult.

Katrina

I really don't care for the dorm system, or the food in the dining halls just because they really don't have that many options. Also, the student strikes earlier this year made it difficult to get into buildings, and sometimes the size of the campus can be overwhelming.

Guadalupe

competition because it makes grades go down, even if you try

Zach

Way to many people. Classes are extremely large which make it somewhat difficult sometimes to get one on one help to grasp the concepts fully.

Lisa

How large the classes are since you don't get much interaction time with your professors.

Viktoriya

The worst things is how difficult it is to get into the classes that you want.

Linda

The worst thing about my school is the large class size. As an undegraduate student, your first two years consists of 200-400 student lecture halls. The only time you get an opportunity to meet the professor is during office hours. By attending the lecture, you are unable to get a sense of what the professor is trying to teach. In addition it is often difficult to sign up for classes you need for your major because there are so many students enrolling at once. Its discouraging to see your classes close when you need it to the most.

Samantha

The tuition fee for the University will be raised 32{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, which means it will be over ten grand. This is the worst thing because people who do not have financial aid will find it difficult to pay off the tuition fees, or pay off loans in the future because it is so costly.

Ching

The lecture size is a problem for many people. It's hard to get to approach the professor for new students.

Kristen

The school is way too big and you never get to know your professors.

Merica

That is without a doubt the cost of tuition! UCLA is a very expensive public school to attend. I wish tuition was more affordable. We all want that!

Karla

Since now, I have not experienced or know of anyhing worst about my school.

Amanda

The worst thing about my school is that everyone is very competitive and secretively trying to get ahead. No one volunteers information--you have to find out pieces of information yourself. It is very important to be pro-active, because otherwise, you are simply a student going to school, nothing else.

Elizabeth

Because there are so many aspects to UCLA, it can seem that funding and support of the university are focused in certain areas and not in others. For example, athletes at UCLA get so many benefits including some that don't have anything to do with athletics. Also, because the school is so big, getting necessary clasees can be difficult especially for popular majors such as political science.

Connie

In part of being a big school, it seems there is a lack of guidance and counselors available for students who need it and want it without going out of their way. In order for students to get help from a counselor, they have to be extremely persistent and on top of things. If someone needs help, they're probably not exactly on top of things. I had to learn to just search and find everything online and figure it out myself.

Laura

At UCLA the students have an intensity they bring to everything they do. While this is an asset in the classroom, it can be a detrimental part of the social life. The thing that most frustrates me as a student at UCLA is that it seems that all most people do is study excessively or party and drink until they can't see straight. So for me, the worst thing about my school is that it can be hard to find someone with whom you can just go to the beach and talk about life.

Heather

Some on-campus housing is anywhere from a 10-30 minute walk from parts of campus, and it is uphill both ways.

Hayley

Many people find UCLA to be too big for them, which may be overwhelming.

Rohollah

There isnt much not to like about my school. The only thing that bothers me, is that some ethnicities tend to hangout only with their crowd. I want them to have an open mind and meet new people, from different reaces.

James

The worst thing about my school is that some of the professor there are to focused on research and don't dedicate enough time to the classes that their teaching. This leads to some classes that aren't worth the tuition because they are secondary in the professors mind.

rachel

crowded and competitive. hard to obtain work, volunteer, internship positions.

Stephen

Nothing.

Alicia

Too many people. Too large of class sizes. Not enough classes to choose from.

nicole

The worst part about UCLA is the fact that there are way too many people. You will most likely always have to change your planned schedule when enrolling for classes because the class that you absolutely need will probably fill up. You receive much less individual attention in anything, and if you want help it's your responsibility to get anything done.

Catherine

The large population, because it is easy to get lost among the crowd (especially if you don't take action for yourself)

Jennifer

too many annoying people

Brian

long way from parking structure to classes

Mayra

It's very competitive and many introductory classes or mandatory courses for certain majors are very large (about 200+ students).

Chilan

Overemphasis on academically degrading "issues" such as diversity.

Jacqueline

Many classes are on high demand and are held in big lecture halls. While this forces the student to go into office hours to get questions answered it also makes the classroom experience less personal. Being in a big lecture hall also makes it more challenging for the student to meet people. You really need to get involved on campus through extracurricular activities or live in a dorm to meet people.

Mandy

The worst thing about my school would probably be the parking situation. Parking is almost non-existent because there are so many students, and it is a big city, so commuting students have a hard time trying to get to classes on time.

Sai-Han

The registration of each class and the expected cumulative progress reports. I really don't like feeling that UCLA wants to kick me out ASAP so they can have someone else take my spot. I prefer to have the experience of doing what I need to do without a tight time constraint.

Andrew

The quarter system, it forces you to learn the material rather quickly

Karen

It's hard to balance school in LA because there is so much to do!

Anqi

There is no ethnic diversity within a certain range of majors.

Maggie

nothing

Jacqueline

The school is a city within a city. It is very big and hilly. You'd get in shape for sure. I believe it would be more difficult for a person to adjust from a small High School/Community background. Because of its' reputation, this school is very competitive and a lot is expected of you.

Scott

The Los Angeles sprawl...Westwood is an amazing place to live, but the traffic on the 405 and throughout LA can really adversely affect student life.

Manilynn

Its such a popular school there are so many people that apply here so sometimes the classes are really crowded.

Anna

class sizes tend to be huge.

Ashley

Parking was terrible both on-campus and nearby.
