University of New Haven Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kara

If I could go back to when I was a high school senior there would be many things I would say. First off I would tell myself to take more dual enrollment classes so I would already have the credit for the classes and it would save me thousands of dollars. I would also tell myself to learn better studying techniques because to be quite honest I am still learning to study effectivly and its tough with the amount of work I get. The last thing I would have told myself would be to save as much money as possible. I am a current student worker and have a high work load and its tough being broke and in a lot of debt.

Don't be afraid of your future in college. At times thngs might not go your way or be hard, but in the end it is worth it and these will be the best years of your life if you let them be. You only live once, so live to the fullest but don't be too dumb with decisions.

It may seem as though high school is all fun and games but high school (if you want it to) can prepare you for college and for success in life. Don't worry. You won't miss out on anything. Everything fun that your friends are doing will still be there after college. The last few years have been tough and I understand what that can be like. Making friends, wanting to be a part of something and to be accepted. Those are things that all kids struggle with. The very best way to build self-esteem is to get an education. Buckle down, finish strong and apply college. There's more help out there for you than you know. I believe in you and know you can suceed if you put your mind to it.

I would definitely warn myself to avoid Senioritis during senior year to maintain a 4.00 gpa. Secondly, I would advise myself on the benefits of attending a local community college. As a high school student, I placed a huge stigma and looked down upon community colleges. A large part of that was being improperly informed on their benefits. I would advise myself on the great number of financial benefits there are as a result of completing basic courses needed for my major at a junior college and then transferring to a 4 year university. Maintaining a high gpa and class ranking would allow for financial aid to cover my tuition fully at the community college, so there would not be any out of pocket expenses. I could also live at home as well to further reduce costs. Most importantly, I would emphasize the importance of completing as many Advanced Placement Exams to get early college credit. This would cut tuition costs greatly and help me speed up my transfer to a 4 year university.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would have told myself to relax and enjoy high school. When I was in high school I was always running around and stressing about all my AP and honors courses. Now that I'm in college I realize they don't matter as much as I was lead on to believe. I would also tell myself not to worry about the transition because I would soon find out that my high school did a perfect job at preparing me. In high school I was always pressured to do my best and take multiple AP courses because that would prepare me for college. Now I know that the AP courses were actually more difficult that courses in college!

I would advise myself to attend all of the summer get-to-know-you programs. Meeting new people ahead of time might have made the transition a little easier since I'm really shy and find it difficult to make friends in an unfamiliar enviroment. I might have been able to find a roommate that would have been more like myself as well. I had alot of problems adjusting to life with the roommate that I had this year. She and I were completely different people and compromise was not an option for her, so freshman was really difficult for me dorm wise.

By attending my community college I have been able to finish all of my general education courses while saving money and focusing on my community service. I love that I have been able to make close relationships with my professors, and now have developed a better work ethic, taking pride in my classes. I am working to my full potential and experiencing my future career first hand. My campus is lucky to be incredibly diverse with a refugee resettlement program in the city which alows the college to have a wonderful Cross Cultural offices providing services for ESOL(english to speakers of other languages) students. I have been involved with this office throughout my enrollment, volunteering as an english conversation partner and a member of the Cultural Exchange club. We won several awards last year including the Campus Compact President's award and being unanimously elected as this year's president of the club. All of these incredible experiences have helped inspire me and fuel my drive for going on to double major in Linguistics and Anthropology minoring in TESOL at the school I am transferring to in the fall.

My college experience has taught me more in the past year than in my entire high school career. I couldn't have found a better home here on campus and the friends I have found will last a lifetime. From the moment I stepped on campus I began the process of finding myself and being who I was always meant to be. No more reins to hold me back, just the freedom, independence, and responsibility, all my own. I had to adjust fast to the pace of college life, as well as balance a heavy double major workload, my campus job, and my Division II athletic career, not to mention a small alloted time for a social life. Time management is key and I have been getting by with flying colors. I have developed great working relationships on and around campus and remained extremely involved in extracurricular activities on and off campus. These college years are very valuable and precious to me as they are my first taste of the real world and what I have to expect on my own in life. This university is the first step in my lifelong dream of success and happiness.

So far, I have gotten so much out of my college experience here at the University of New Haven. Ever since my first visit on campus I met new people who were all so friendly and helpful. Everyone says college is a great place to meet new people, you never know the relationships you will form in college, whether it be just a roommate, an acquaintance, or even your future maid of honor. Being in college has taught me that not everyone you meet will share the same interests as you and that is why it is important to have an open mind and be less judgemental. Coming into college with the mindset that everyone will like you and that you will get along with everyone is not going to get you anywhere. In order to make friends and have fun is to always be positive and be yourself.

Mallory

My education has provided me with skills that have greatly benefitted me in just dealing with everyday situations. I have received valuable information that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I have really enjoyed my college experience so far. I have studied some very interesting subjects that were really fun and exciting to participate in. College is such a great experience when you have the right attitude. When you find courses that spark your interest, it makes attending college so much more worth while, and definitely worth the time and money spent. Going to college allows you to further your knowledge and improve your critical thinking, as well as give you the necessary skills you need to be successful in your career. I hope to achieve great things by attending college.

I have gotten many things out of my college experience. The most important idea college has blessed me with is an new perception of the world. I realized college is a place of new beginnings, dreams and hope. It doesn't matter where your from , what your family income is, or the color of your skin. It is a place of higher learning, where you have just as much opportunity as the next person to succed. I never image having this opportunity given the circumstances I was raised in, coming from a low income family who lived in the projects. My whole life all I seen was poverty, pain, and struggle. My new attitude on life has honestly opened my eyes and showed me an side of the world I never would of known. I feel very optimistic about my future where ever I may find myself. I Just know If I can over come the adversity in my childhood, I can make it in world. College had inspired me to not fit any sterotype to be my own person and make my own decisions. "The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work".

Upon arriving at the University of New Haven I was filled with so many different emotions: excitment, nervousness, and fear. I was so excited to start a new chapter of my life but I was terrified of how things were going to pan out. I feared that there would be no one I could call my friend, I feared that the proffesors would not be there to assit me, and I feared that I would not be able to do well in my academic course. After the first week however, I knew that this school was once of the best decisions I could make. The diversity made it immpossible to find some one to become friends with and the proffessors were amazing. There were always events when you could have a great and safe night while at the same time meeting people who would soon become life-long friends. Professors are always there to assit you here at the University of NewHaven and will help you one on one after class, during office hours or through appointment. In addition to this the university makes it impossible to fail with their addition of a tutoring center in the library.

Since I am only a freshman at the University of New Haven my journey has just begun; thus, every experience I have had has been a valuable one. Ever since i was younger i was never able to retain information in the subject of history; until, I had this one professor in my first semester that would have us students have a discussion on a board that would allow us to comment on one anothers opinion of the material that we read. After noticing that my grades were staying in the higher B area i realized that the discussions and structured critiscism would help my learning style. I also joined a few clubs to help make friends and to get out of my shell. Altogether the university has helped me learn my own learning style and to get me out of my shell and make the best out of everything.

My college experience is great this is my second school i have attended that makes me want to keep going until I reach my goal in becoming a lawyer. My cousin attended university of new haven and graduated with honors. Willing to have that moment for myself and over coming doubt from others, thought i couldn't get the eduction that I needed because of my families history. College to me is that step an stone to real life. This college i know will bring me where i need to be in life. College brought me to the highest point in my life I want to be an example for the next generation like my older cousin was for me. I feel there is no limit to what you can do as long as you have the Knowledge, ambition and motivation from peers and family. Maybe one day I could give a little girl advise and she takes and and passes it on. To live doesn't mean your alive until you have something to show for, and many people don't look at it that way which is disappointing to many who just needed that little push.

In the short few weeks I've been enrolled in college, I already feel like a much more driven and responsible individual. Before this quarter, I hadn't attended any kind of classes since High School, which I graduated from in 2007. Since then I've been living on my own with no financial help from my family and have held at least 2 jobs at once, sometimes more. I finally decided it was time to take the next step in life and enrolled in my local community college, hoping to make something more of myself than I could on my current path. I am a hard worker, enjoy learning, and am highly motivated to do well. College has made me feel like I'm not hopelessly lost in the world. I feel like I'm going to be a valuable member of society, and I really hope I can get some kind of financial aid so I can continue attending college.

Throughout my college experience so far, I have learned that college is about life. Unlike high school, college students are usually not living at home with their parents. Since most college students are not home with their parents most of the time, they have to show that they are independent by being able to take care of themselves. This means that students need to use their time wisely by knowing when to study and be serious and when they can socialize and have fun. In college, students are studying in a field in which they have an interest in doing when they go out into the real world. Since students are not with their parents most of the time, they must know how to budget their money, whether it is given to them or whether they are working while they are in school. Most importantly, unlike high school, college students pay thousands of dollars for their education while they are enrolled in school. It is highly recommeded for students to make the best of their education by asking questions and seeking help so that they can do well academically.

Alex

So far I have learn that college is not all about having fun. You need a good balance of fun and acedemics. College is the best years of your life, I hear that phrase all the time. While you are their make sure you do well and focus on what you want to get out of it not your parents or anyone else. Experience new things, and find out what everything is all about. I have learned so many valuable lessons from my roommates and professors that I would not be able to learn if I had skipped out on college.

Julissa

Through out my freshman college experience so far I’ve learned that I have no reason for failure or doing anything but the best at the University of New Haven. I have all the resources I need and I am discovering those as everyday goes by but now it is entirely up to me discovers myself as well through learning and experiences and then devote myself whole-heartedly to achievement. . I’ve learned that I can make whatever it is I want out of my college experience because this is all about me. I can only get out of it as much as I put into it and this is probably the most important lesson I have learned so far through out my freshman college experience. College is not just about work. It is about discovering yourself and preparing for the future that you want for yourself whatever that might be. My future is entirely up to me. "Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it. " ~Buddha

The first day of school i walked in to history class thinking what am i doing here i hated history throughout high school and had always recieved a low grade in the class. I was worried that taking history would just lower my GPA in the end, but once we did the first writting assingnment i knew that it was not going to be to bad if i put my hardest work into it. So i tried my hardest and ended up getting an B in the class eventhough it was not the best grade; it was better than what i recieved in high school. Being in a private university has been a positive change, for the professors are there to help me understand what is happening in the class, but if they cannot help you understand there are plenty of resources to use as back-up. I feel as if going to this university has helped me understand that i can do anything if i try hard enough.

What I have gotten thus far out of my college experience is a great deal of responsibility and time management. Moving away from home has really brought to light that being a successful college student and adult requires a lot of responsibility and if I were to make the wrong decision then I will be faced with the consequences for my actions. Also, my parents cannot afford to help me with my finances so in order to pay my tuition, housing, food and all the other important expenses I have to be very responsible in the choices I make financially. Since attending school I have learned to be more financially independent which has been challenging, but a necessary lesson for me as a young adult. Hard work requires a tremendous amount of time and mismanagement of that time can result in a turn for the worst most often than not. My ups and downs as a young student has also been valuable for me because going through trials is great preparation for success in the near future.

Sara

I have been attending college for three semesters so far. I attend Mchenry County College, a community school near my home. I know most high school seniors want to leave home as fast as they possibly can, but not me. I stay home to clean and help my family, work a part-time job, and go to school as a full-time student. With this busy life schedule I have learned many things. College taught me time-management, responsibility, and forced me to become an adult. It is the passive-aggressive attitude of my instructors which truly allows me to decide my own future and taught me that it is my own decisions that will hurt or help me in my future. My college experiences have taught me that life is life, it is unfair but we as individuals can reach our full potential if we only allow ourselves to be the best we can.

I realize that my first week at the University of New Haven was nothing like I expected. Being a commuter, I hardly knew anybody and envied those moving into dorms. I thought I could not fit into this new world…but it took less than a week for my opinion to change. The friends I have made are so friendly and always make me feel welcome. Furthermore, my commitments to the school newspaper, Mock Trial Team, and volunteer group have helped me express my passions for political journalism and charitable services. My college experiences have also helped me gain confidence while speaking. On the day I was scheduled to make a presentation, for example, I woke up with a violent cold and a lost voice. Yet, I received applause from the entire class and was congratulated on my ability to give a presentation despite my sickness. This really taught me how to be confident in myself, even if things do not always go as planned. Overall, my college experiences at the University of New Haven have been extremely rewarding. I expect the next four years to be equal to, if not better than what I have already experienced.

Carrie

My college experience so far has been amazing. I have grown as an individual more than I thought possible. Since being here I have made so many friends and met some incredible people who have most definitely changed my life for the better. The classes and academics have been much more challenging than I thought they would but this has made me feel much better and more strongly for what I am doing. The challenges that I have faced academically have only further shown me that I will be able to function in the real world. Living on my own has also taught me many life skills; I can do my own laundry, and make a variety of meals. Because of my college experience my interpersonal skills have grown immeasurably I am able to tolerate people and understand people from different walks of life better. My college experience is something that has changed me for the rest of my life and is so far unforgettable.

Matthew

The college experience is different and unique for everyone. To me the college experience is experiencing the aspects college life has to offer. That means going out, meeting new people, joining clubs and a fraternity/sorority, all night cramming sessions, as well as all night gaming sessions. But most importantly the college experience is experimenting and experiencing new things. To me college is about making mistakes, because once you’re an adult you can’t be making those same mistakes. It’s about making your experience in college the best it can be; about being a “successful” student in every way; about maximizing life in the moment, with an eye to the future. It has been a good choice to study at UNH because they one of the top Forensic Sciences schools in the nation. Having to want a career based in forensics, its a good choice.

Dwayne

Attending the University of New Haven was the best choice I have ever made. The education that I have received is phenomenal. As a Fire Science Administration major, having teachers that have been involved in the fire service is amazing. I have learned a lot that I would have never learned if I did not attend school. I have learned life skills that I will keep with me forever. As a firefighter, we learn the basics in Firefighting School, but I now have the upper hand by attending school. I have learned stuff that is not taught in Firefighting School. I am jumpstarting my career through University of New Haven. I want to excel in my career and be all that I can be, but the financial side of college is not good. I want to further my education as far as I can, but without money, there is no hope. I know my college experience is far from over and there are many opportunities ahead. I strive to be the best I can be, but without the financial aspect of school, I cannot shine. Firefighting is an amazing career, but I want to challenge myself with excelling in school.

Joshua

The most valuable thing I have gotten out of my college experience so far has surprisingly not been the education and the development of knowledge in my field, in my opinion the most valuable thing my UNH experience has taught me so far is how to be a responsible and productive adult who will not only be able to contribute for himself but will be able to help out the greater good wether that turns out to be the company I eventually work at or just the community I live in. I have learned how to always make a positive contribution, and I find that more then anything to be the most valuable thing. my experience in my field has been a close second and with that I hope to further the betterment of mankind not just for myself and for my country but for humanity as a whole but in the long run that is what really matters.

Ciara

At first, I was weary about attending collage because it was a whole new experience for me. However, Ivy Tech turned out to be a friendly place that made the transition from high school to college easy. To me, college and my education means a better future for me. College opens up new opportunities to express myself and figure out what I want in life. College will lead me to a career I really enjoy doing. I feel good about my choice to go to college because it will lead to a better life for me.

Barbara

College experiences include parites and hanging out with classmates who become friends along the way. Although that is fun, as the years go by I learned there is more to a college experience. Networking with teachers, finding out the resouces the school offers, learning time management with balancing class, study time, and fun. Most people in college never talk about the other important things I mentioned that they learn and experience until after they graduate. However, I have learned while being in college. College is valuable to me because there is no other options for me to pursue my career goals. I have to graduate to move forward with my life as an OBGYN. I have no parents (they are dead), no family memebers who can help me pay for school, I never realized how important college is until now. I feel like the value of college and me graduating is matter of life and death, moving forward or being left behind. The Value is priceless, worth more than anything in the world to me, it gives me drive to continue my education, it's eminent because if I do not graduate I will have no furtue in this life.

Emily

I have figured out a lot about myself as a person and what I really want to do with my life. I know that there are things that I can do, things I can't do, and things that I want to do. Not all of them are the same thing. College has been fun and showed me what my own potential is, how much I can accomplish just by trying, and I want to take that all the way, I want to fulfill my potential and do what I want to do. College isn't valuable just because of it's monetayr worth to me later in life, but because it has been the best growning and growing up experience for me.

Robert

College has taught me that you only get out what you put in. If you do not commit yourself to getting involved in campus activities, sports, fraternities, clubs, etc. , it is tough to become acclimated to the college environment. You have to get involved in order to network, meet new people, and expand your friendships. This allows you to experience much more in college. It is valuable to attend because you are able to meet new people, including students, new professors, who may be professionals in their field, yielding you access to potential job oppurtunities, and new experiences.

Ashley

Out of my experience I have gotten plenty. I realized that college is an investment in your life. Yes it is going to be expensive but in the end the rewards will be worth it. UNH has helped me realize that I'm in the right place, I've cried and had restless nights and thought I would be returning home because the stress was unbearble but then I thought of all I have learned over this year and a half and the value of it all, I realized I don't want it to go in vain. UNH has made me a more independent individual who does not let circumstances get in her way and will fight and do it takes to graduate at her dream school despite the cost. I have realized that there really isnt any other school that can offer me what UNH has: staff that is willing to help you in any way, professors with experience in your field of study, resources that are vital to your learning process and most of all a chance to have simulated and real life hands on experience to make sure that this is what you want to do.

Jessica

While finishing up my general transfer degree at Green River Community and in the process of transferring to Central Washington University I have learned a lot academically, and have learned even more about myself as a person. Being a first generation student I was never pushed to attend college. I came to realize at the end of my senior year that it may be detrimental to my future if I do not obtain a degree. I knew I needed a degree to reach the career goals I had set for myself. Pushing myself to achieve more started by applying to GRCC. Through this process I have learned I am a self starter, and can achieve whatever I set my mind to. It has been a very valuable experience, and now it is time to begin my next academic journey. Attending CWU will be a new experience, letting me grow even more as an individual and learn what is needed to obtain a degree in Psychology and Business Administration. Overall, I am not done with this journey and look forward to what is ahead.

Elizabeth

I have really gotten to know myself and my limits and what I can and cannot handle. I have learned to ask questions and for help if I need it, but that I can surprise myself with what I can do. I love the fact that I have close friends that are from all over and we still have so much in common. I have so much more independence and responsibility, but I love the thrill of being on my own and taking control of my own life. I can chose to succeed or fail, but I know the concequences for both paths, and I can see where my life can lead if I do my best. I am quite far from home, so visits are few and far between, but because of that I cherish the moments I can spend with my family and friends. I know that I have to make time to keep in touch. One thing I've learned is that just because you make a mistake, doesn't mean you are a failure, and you can turn your life around at any point, good or bad.

Yesenia

I have only attended one year of college and I already feel like I have learned so much. Because I went to school so far from home, I have learned to become more independent. College has been valuable in that it has given me a chance to broaden my horizons and become more of a citizen of the world. I have been privileged enough to go to places such as New York City that I never would have imagined traveling to. I love traveling and now that I know I am capable of living 3000 miles away from home, I am ready to achieve my goal of traveling and possibly moving to India to stop human trafficking.

Trisha

Upon attending college for two years now, I have learned a lot of things and I am really greatful that I was given the opportunity to learn. Upon my college experience, I have learned that college is actually very similar to life, it is very challenging and hard but it can also be fun. For an individual to succeed, he or she needs to know what he or she wants. In addition, a person needs to have good work ethic, a very motivated character, the ability to stay in focus and work really hard. Furthermore, a person needs to value patience and optimism, because I believe that these two words are the most important things to have in achieving one's goals and dreams. Without patience a person can easily just give up and without optimism a person can just easily lose hope in whatever it is that he or she is doing. Being in school and being able to learn is valuable because if not for it I would not have known what I now know. School does not only give me knowledge from books but it also gives me wisdom about what life is about.

jessica

Attending college has been the best experience. it has shown me the responsibilities of being on your own. i attended a small private high school where things werent very complicated and there wasnt much diversity. attending college has really introduced me to many different people with all sorts of different backgrounds. it has opened my mind about a persons characteristict and various religions.

karim

Attending college is a very great deal in our life experience. College is a place where you earn your knowlegde assets as well as friends and aquaintances. Its also the place where you feel happiness because you earned a good grade, and you feel sorry because you didint make it in an exam. It was a great experience. i wish everybody had this priceless experience

Sharana

I am a junior at the University of New Haven, and I feel like I've gotten a good amount out of my college experience so far. I plan to get a lot more out of my experience these next two years. My freshman year, I lived in a Living Learning Community for forensic science, which exposed me to other students in my major. We all had the same classes and homework, so we were able to help each other during study sessions . As an underclassman, I was a member of the National Society of Black Engineers. This year, I am on the Executive Board as the Programs Chair, which has gotten me very involved in a short amount of time. I am now also a member in the Forensic Science and Chemistry club on campus. Being a double major in forensic science and chemistry requires hard work and determination. Getting involved on campus helps relieve the stress of double majoring. It has enabled me to meet new people on campus who have the same interests as me. It also makes me feel good to know that I am making a difference on my campus.

Regina

I have recieved the knowledge tha tI need to interview for a job in my profession. I also learned how to go about getting an internship.

Oscar

My college is experience gave me a chance to progress further more than high school. I didnt know what to expect for going to college but i jump right into it. The studies, test, homeworks, etc. are nothing like high school. Of course because its college level courses are different, but the challenge was and is still worth the time. I saw different opportunities to take more possible courses that were not taken in high school. Theres more a selection through my college experience. If i had the money i can continue and futher my education in my college. Allowing me to take more courses based on my major.

Dionel

In my two years at the University of New Haven I have learned the responsibilities of handling and balancing money throughout the year. That is absolutely the most valuable thing any student will learn to tackle in this school, whether it is situations that involves loans, meal plans, or the money in the person's pocket. Each student learns to create a budget for themself for the year. The second most important thing is learning to focus on my GPA. The grades are very important while attending college because it determines if someone can get more help with financial aid and with tuition rising every year it is imparitive that each student can get as much help possible. Taking out loans every year is a great short term possibility, but in the long run it will come back and haunt the student with interest rates putting them in debt over $30,000 in their sophmore year. Personally, I am one of those victims and refuse to take out another loan. Grades are very helpful when it comes to situations like that, and if they don't reach certain expectations then students are stuck with no degree and a huge debt.

Ashley

I dual major at Delaware College of Art and Design. I am studying Illustration, and Graphic Design. Both of these majors will help me succeed in the career world after college. College has been such a valuable experience. Living away from my parents forced me to become more independant. Being surrounded by other people who ar also focused in the art world has given me a sence of belonging. Also studying under successfull artists has given me a vision of what kind of artist i can become. The college experience has made me happier, and placed me into my world of art.

Ivette

I've learned that a college education really is important. I know that my parents have downed me telling me that its important but I have seen that it truely is. And it's not easy but it will get me closer to a career that I enjoy.

Tagewattie

I can't describe in words what I've gotten out of my college experience, but I will. I was living at home in Massachusetts until August 2009. I was very sheltered. Since coming to UNH, I have done so many things. I have experienced many things. I have also met many great people. I wouldn't change anything. I have come out of my shell that I was in and it feels great. I hope to do more in the semesters to come. I've gotten involved with numerous clubs on campus and met some great people doing it. I wouldn't trade this time for anything in the world, I've grown so much as a person and I want to continue to do so in time.

Kristina

The most important thing I have gained from my college experience is the knowledge that it is never too late and never impossible to achieve a goal. Since returning to college after 16 years, I have earned straight A's in every course and achieved "President's List" status in every term. Any reservations or self-doubt I may have had have been erased. Returning to school has taught me that I can accomplish anything that I set out to do, regardless of any real or perceived obstacles that may come my way.

Athina

During my time in college, I have learned how to relate the things I had learned in class to things that will be happening in the real world. College is giving me the experience and confidenc t be able to go out into the real world and into the business world and feel like I will succed. My college experience has been valuable because I am being prepared to take everything I have learned and fulfill my dreams of having a successful life.

Kayla

Assuming I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, knowing what I know now about the transition to college, the advice I would give myself is to relax. As a high school senior I was worried I would not be accepted to any of the colleges I applied to because of my performance in high school. I was convinced I would be forced to attend a community college. All my schools overlooked my absences and grades and focused on my accomplishments outside of school and accepted me. After graduation I felt like everything was happening so fast and I could not keep up. It was like the world was moving on without me. When move-in day arrived I felt my stomach turning, but after a few hours at school I was fine. My parents left and I knew I would be okay. Classes started a couple days later and I felt like the world was at my mercy as opposed to the other way around. School is great and I enjoy being on my own. I miss home once in a while, but I do not feel the need to go home.

Do the best you can in highschool because it really does matter. If you strive to matter, then do what you can build your transcript while you can because thats a big part of what schools look at. Also, as hard as you should work to be the best, never take life too seriously. There is always time to achieve your goals but make time for you, that is very important. Enjoy life while you can because it only comes around once

One thing that I would definitely tell myself would be to study harder, pay more attention in classes and work for the future, not just the end of the school day. One of my greatest regrets now that I am in college was the fact that I did not take more college credit courses while in high school. I find myself at somewhat of a disadvantage to the other students here, some who have transferred as many as 12 credits from their high schools. Every day when I think about my current schedule I am reminded with the daunting fact regarding how hard I will have to work in the next two years just to catch-up to some students, and now I just wish that I had devoted more of my time in high school to actually doing the work and not goofing around with my friends. The college workload is much more difficult that that of a normal high school, and I regularly wish that I had taken the neccesary steps to even it out somewhat.

If I could go back in time and tell myself about college, I would first start off by telling myself to work harder in the senior year of high school. I found that I was a little behind at the beginning of my freshman year at UNH and had to work a little harder to catch up, whereas if I had worked harder senior year I would not have had that problem. Other advice I would give is to have fun and enjoy the new experience. My first semester was a bit stressful with the newfound amount of work among other things and I didn't take enough time to just enjoy myself. In the coming semesters, I will definately enjoy myself but also remember to keep my grades up. Having made the Dean's List fairly easily the first semester, I know I can do it again and also have a little more fun. One last thing I would tell myself is to enjoy the summer more, take some time off and be with friends and family because it will be a while till I see them again. College is a great experience, make the best of it.
