Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Katie

For the most part.

Colleen

i dont think so- i dont fit the bill and most of my friends dont. You can find people who suck, but you can also find some great people. People suck all over the place and just because the majority of the students dress well doesn't mean that daddy purchased it.

Elizabeth

While there are some people do fit these stereotypes, the majority of people wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. Everyone is very socially accepting, and there are many different styles of dress. Most people are very friendly, and the one thing that everyone has in common is that everyone is smart.

John

Not completely, thankfully. There are a lot of the stereotypical spoiled rich brats, but thankfully at least half of the richer student body isn't at all like that. Popped collars are also mercifully rare. Yes, about 1/3 of us are from New Jersey- mostly North Jersey, I note with sadness, being from South Jersey myself. North and South Jersey are really two separate states, whatever they try to tell you.

Lauren

There's no denying that Richmond attracts those types of students. But I think their proportion relative to the rest of the student body is exaggerated. I think students of that demographic just tend to stick out. Must be the bright colored clothing or something.

Dale

For the most part, the stereotypes I've hear have been pretty accurate.

Jordan

for probably 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students

Kelly

I think that this stereotype is true at times, but even though people may be rich and preppy most of them are still very down to earth.

Toby

For the most part, yes. If you stay out of groups like the athletes. The average student here would fit best into the Northern, stuck up category. They embody this with their Greek life especially. They're overly exclusive and think their shit doesn't stink...and think their parties are actually good. For the most part girls are pretty mediocre to disgusting here give or take a few good looking ones here and there which are few and far between.

AL

Yes. Painstakingly so.

Shannon

I would say there are definitely a lot of rich and preppy students here, but there are tons of other students that totally don't fit these stereotypes.

John

no, of course there certainly are people here who are all of those things but there are alot of people who are friendly and hardworking.

Harper

Honestly, for the most part, yes. There are some exceptions. Clearly the Richmond population is 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} snobs but I could probably say that atleast 85{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student population relies heavily on their parents who make 6 digits or more a year.

Matt

Most stereotypes are at least partial truths. We don't have a lot of diversity (non-white students, students from low-middle or lower socio-economic classes, people not from Virginia or New England), although there are people with very different perspectives, mindsets, lifestyles, etc. Students are ambitious which can sometimes create some competition for grades, awards, leadership positions, etc. Most people study abroad and those who don't generally want to but can't work it into their schedule. It's just something you do. Almost everyone lives on-campus so you are always in-the-loop. Frats/sororities can be big especially freshman year, but there are still a lot of people who have nothing to do with Greek life. I'm not greek and haven't had trouble finding friends or things to do. The campus is really beautiful, but you lose sight of that after a couple of months.

Ale

These stereotypes are accurate for a number of people, but the majority of students are extremely hard workers nevertheless.

Chris

Yes very much so. This is not an opinion either. A large majority of students are caucasion and because this is a private school, naturally most of the students are from well to do families who can afford to send thier children here. I would also describe Richmond as the most Southern Northern school I had ever seen. I have yet to meet anyone who came from anywhere south of Virginia and all the students seem to come from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Massachusetts.

Suzanne

in regards to most students, yes

Chris

Occasionally

James

Almost entirely accurate.

Ben

pretty much

Patrick

Some of these stereotypes are true, there aren't nearly as many minorities as is advertised by the school. Most people are pretty well off economically as well, however a very large percentage of the campus receives financial aid. As for the fraternities and sororities there are many more women in sororities then men in fraternities and there are a lot of people who aren't very active in their own organization. As an underclassmen it is easy to get caught up in the idea that the social scene is dominated by greek life. However regardless of what you are in to you will find people who share the same interests even if you aren't a member of a greek organization. The business school does hold the highest percentage of majors, but there are a plethora of options available to all students in terms of academics.

Alex

The truth of the matter is that the rich, northern, preppy kids are the most obnoxious, so people notice them first. Beyond that, Richmond has much more diversity than students give credit for. Maybe this is because they don't take the time to get to know the other people around them. Beyond skin color, there is a diversity of ethnicity, background, and interests that is often silenced by the internal stereotypes. As for the studying, Richmond students are academically challenged, but we also make time to have fun.

Amanda

The stereotypes are somewhat accurate. The preppy frat boy or sorority girl is a person that appears very frequently on the Richmond campus, but more than half the school is not Greek, and 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of it is not from New Jersey, even though it doesn't seem that way. However, there are many students (perhaps less visible) who do not fit the typical J. Crew stereotype. The school gives out so much financial aid that almost everyone here is getting some sort of help paying for school--not everyone is wealthy.

Jordan

I think I just answered that all in one.

Kate

In general, but you can definitely find those who don't fit the stereotypes and are still having a wonderful experience here. You don't need to be cookie-cutter to go to UR, but you probably need to be okay with others being that way.

Melanie

no, not from my experience. I have a lot of diverse friends. I mean those types of people do exist, but there are lost of other peole from different places and different socioeconomic backgrounds and I think thats cool.

Stephanie

To an extent. There is your "typical" Richmond Girl or Guy who wears preppy clothing. And of course if its warm there will be dresses with Uggs and if its raining there will be funky rain boots. But there are those of us who either don't fit into the Abercrombie category at all or are somewhere in between.

Julia

For some people these stereotypes are accurate- you will see girls walking around everyday all dressed up and some people do have the typical rich kid I-get-what-I-want-and-if-I-don't-I'm-going-to-call-my-Daddy syndrome. However, many people are very down-to-earth and normal college kids. Also, many people are involved in community service projects and work for their money on campus. You will encounter all kinds of people here at Richmond.

Rachel

Of course this stereotype isn't universally accurate for the student body at Richmond! Over half of us are on some sort of financial aid, drive Hondas (or no car at all), wear jeans we got on sale for 15 bucks at a department store and shoes from PayLess, and are not necessarily involved in athletics and/or Greek life on campus. However, there is a predominance of wealth and WASPs (white, Anglo-Saxon protestants) on the Richmond campus, which gives the rest of the student body a choice: fit in, or stick out. While a small percentage of students here are actually ridiculously wealthy, a lot of students feel like they have to act/dress/behave like they are preppie and rich.

Mary

There is a bit of truth to the stereotypes in that a large percentage of the student population is rich and preppy but there are also a lot of people that do not fit that stereotype. As for stuck up, this may apply to a handful of students but you will find that anywhere. Generally, the students here are some of the nicest I've ever met.

Kristen

I'd say the stereotypes are becoming more and more accurate every day, but there are always exceptions.

Quinn

Yeah pretty much.

Mary

The stereotypes are about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} correct. The preps and fraternity life don't take up all of campus, but they make up enough to hinder the connection and diversity between other groups. Almost every other person on campus is on Greek life and generally if you are not in Greek life, you are not "cool." However, not everyone is rich. Some people are frighteningly rich, a vast majority is made up of varying grades of middle class. There is a good size group of lower middle class and low class, but they they will not advertise it to the campus. I think Richmond encourages the type of student who has low self confidence and can't really think for themselves. People go into business because they think it is the only way to get anywhere. Lots of people join Greek life because they are afraid to attempt to make a name for themselves by being themselves.

Dylan

Yes... Unfortunately
