What is your overall opinion of this school?

Adrienne

One of the best things about ASU is the fact that there is more than one campus. I spent my first year at Tempe main and hated it! It was crowded and soooo BIG..TOO BIG if you ask me... and I felt that the majority of students did not seem to be academically driven. It was all about going out and getting "wasted." When I tell someone I am a sun devil most of the time automatically he/she assumes that I am a party girl.. when in actuality I am the exact opposite. Another thing that I did not like was the fact of having classes with 100-300 other students. I felt as though i was only a number, and that my professors did not care. Today, I am at ASU West, and I LOVE IT! Its a smaller campus, less people, and the students seem more motivated. I no longer feel like a number, and my professors actually seem to care about his/her students. ASU may not be the greatest, but then again no school is perfect.

ASU has probably one of the largest student populations in the country. With over 63,000 students last year, and even more coming in the fall, there's always a crowd on campus. Even with a student body that amounts to the size of a small city, I find that ASU is the perfect size for me. I always wanted to go to a big school where I could meet lots of people and where I knew there was a lot of school spirit. ASU students have a lot of pride in our school. At football games all you see in the student section is a see of students sporting gold shirts and painted faces, all cheering and singing the fight song everytime we score a touchdown. And its not just in sports that you can see the school spirit, its everywhere. There's not a single place in all of Tempe that you won't find ASU students representing their school with pride. The college town atmosphere that many students crave presents itself in a rather small area in Tempe. Well actually its four blocks of one street, Mill Ave. Mill is just a couple blocks from the dorms on North Campus and its a great place to walk around, grab some food at one of the many different restaurants, go shopping, or go bar hopping at night. Its always packed with college students, especially on the weekends when everyone is going out to have fun and celebrate the fact that they don't have to get up in the morning to go to class. The best part about ASU, in my opinion, is that there's always something to do or see on campus. On any given day there are booths set up around the Memorial Union or there's an event going on at PV Beach, the lawn area between the Palo Verde Dorms on North Campus. There are also speakers that come to the Grady Gammage Auditorium and speak to students about a variety of topics, we even had Barack Obama and Bill Clinton speak on campus last year. Whenever you're looking for something to do between classes or after you're done for the day you can always find something. Last year, when I was a freshman at ASU, my friends and I had a couple of places that you could always find us: In front of Palo Verde East, the dorm we lived in, sitting at the tables, at the tables on the back side of Palo Verde East, which a couple of my friends gave the nickname Asia because it was the "far east of the building." If you couldn't find us in either of those places we were probably in one of our rooms hanging out and relaxing after a long day.

I have never been harassed as much by a place I am spending my life savings. The administration at ASU just plain sucks. Secondly, my advisers in high school were much more intelligent then what I have seen thus far. Thirdly, I don't understand why I am paying teachers to have their T.A.'s teach me. After going through four years of bullshit if you want to get your money's worth out of ASU I have learned that the real teachers seem to be either in graduate level courses or at ASU's other campus'. Other then that, if you are looking to have a good time and you don't give a crap about how you spend all your parent's money this is the place to go.

Lane

All in all, I like the school. It's a big school but it's not hard to meet and get to know people. You learn the campus fairly quickly and my personal experience with instructors is that they are willing to help when you ask for it. Since I'm from Texas, when I tell people that I go to ASU they say, "omg, why do you go to school so far away? there's plenty of good schools here!" But one of the main reasons I came here is because it's so far away. It's like I'm in a different world(no pun intended)lol Tempe is pretty much a college town becuase it caters to students with discounts at local businesses and later hours at many restaurants, but with Scottsdale and Phoenix so close, there's so much more to the area than just the school. There's a lot of school pride at ASU. On a typical day, many people are wearing something gold and maroon with ASU on it, from hats to shorts, etc. The most common complaint at ASU is probably about housing. On-campus living is pretty crappy or if you get in a newer dorm like Hassay, you can look forward to flooding from a pulled fire alarm or 4am false alarm fire drills.

Trevor

ASU has the best campus, there are so many people but yet the campus is easy to get around. You see people you know everyday walking to class. I think the biggest controversy is meal plan, we get screwd over. If we dont use up meals then we lose them, they are pretty much taking our money.

Blake

ASU is huge, and many of the classes are too. Fortunately, the most professors are willing to help you during their office hours. Also, the vast number of advisors and other helpful faculty members that are on campus make it feel less intimidating. There are a lot of majors and classes to choose from, so there's something for everyone.

Holly

ASU is a great school to attend. Yes, it is big but not all classes have 150 people or more. When I was planning on ASU, I was unsure if the bigger class size would benefit me however classes range from small to big depending upon the course. There are great instructors and some bad ones but you get that at any university. There is a lot of school pride, but I wish that there was more however the only way for that to happen is if the students take the initiative on their own. One thing that you will discover is the major crime committed on campus is bike theft. It happened to me so be aware. As for the location of ASU, it is in the heart of Tempe, AZ which is an awesome college environment, except for the hobos of course. You have Mill Ave right by the campus but you have surrounding cities, like Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler, not even 15 minutes away. Also if you want to get out of the city, drive 45 minutes and you're out. Arizona is a great state to explore because of its diversity of terrains and heritage.

Justine

The best thing about ASU is the weather and the relaxed attitude. I would change the out of state tution and lack of school funding for clubs and sports teams. My school is the perfect size for me. People say oohhh that school is huge and i hear thats a party school. They give me this "knowing" smile that says I know you drink and party a lot just because you attend ASU/ You must have been a slacker in highschool. I spend most of my time in the MU. It is definitely a college town. I think our administration should stop wasting our money on "research" and lower out of state tution, give out more scholarships, cut down the monopoly on textbooks, stop cutting varsity sports, and fund club teams and other organizations. The biggest controversy on campus was Lisa Love cutting the swimming team, tennis team, cheerleading team, and wrestling team and the MU being torched. There is a ton of school pride. I will always remember the football games sitting in the student section and the Undie Run. The most frequent student complaints are the rising cost of tuition and the mismanagement of school funds.

Cassie

The best thing about ASU is that they pretty much offer everything you could possibly think of. The one thing I would change is the organization of advisors and degree choices. I saw 4 different advisors and was told 4 different things resulting in me taking classes I didn't need. This past year I spend most of my time on campus in my dorm room, but I also liked spending time at the MU and at adelphi. There is a ton of school pridde and especially around football season!

Alex

Asu is big but at the same time small. the campus is only one mile square, so its very compact and flat, which makes it easier to bike. There are bike lanes around the university. We have a great athletics program. there is some school pride, not a lot. I assume this happens because phoenix is a big city and there is a lot going on. There are more women than men at ASU. The price of books and the rise of tuition are some of the student complaints. GREAT thing- the light rail!! it will connect all ASU campuses by fall '08.

Kyle

Trying to be the foremost public research school in the United States. Tempe is sort of a college town with many, many students living there but it's in the heart of one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. in Phoenix.

Andrew

There are so many great things about ASU. The students are nice and there's a lot of things to do. The classrooms are a bit too large, but I believe it's being worked on. Students in engineering spend most of their time in the engineering library doing homework or at the many local bars. The biggest recent controversy was cheerleaders posing provocatively in lingerie. They're getting rid of the cheer squad and picking up a tamer "Spirit Squad." Students complain about everything, but that's our right. We'll always remember our friends. There is a tremendous amount of school pride.

Parker

Knowing what I know now about ASU, I would have chosen a different school! The only reason I decided to come here was because the Planetary Sciences program is one of the top in the country. Be prepared for 120 degree summers, 52,000+ other students on the main campus and really long walks to your classes. The school is far too large, both in population and area. I spend a large portion of my time in an office, but then I am a graduate student- and that is expected. The town is very much a college town, to the point that it's difficult to get away from the "students are irresponsible" attitude. The administration desperately needs an upgrade. I have not yet had an encounter with the administration or staff in which my questions were answered satisfactorily (especially where money is concerned). No two people will tell you that you need the same form for a specific purpose. The president of the university recently refused to allow handicap access to the student union/food court while remodeling the building after an arson-related fire! He stated that meeting fire codes was not important if it would only serve the few students who are handicapped! (And he makes $5 million per year!) The most frequent student complaint is that parking is hard to come by- and is exhorbitantly priced.

Erica

ASU is way too big. Classes are always over crowded and sometimes people have to sit in the aisles. I have had a couple of professors who don't even seem like they want to be teaching at all. They seem like their just there for the money and don't really care about the students. It's horrible how there are no greek houses. I was going to rush but I decided not to because our greek system is not what it's supposed to be at all. I had a couple friends who wanted to go to ASU but since their parents were so involved in the greek system them wouldn't let them because it's not traditional. Manzanita is GROSS! The dorms are way too strict. Were college students aren't we supposed to be expressing ourselves and letting ourselves go? We can't when everyone is always watching us everywhere. I don't really have any amazing memories from my first two years at ASU. It's more like "what college town?" Everything around campus is so old and sometimes I am afraid to sit in my seat in class.

Sarah

ASU is basically a large campus with many resources. It is a bit too big and crowded, but you learn to get used to it. There is a lot to do around ASU on the weekends, especially with the new Tempe Marketplace.

Alysha

When I tell my friends and family that I go to ASU, they all congratulate me and are very excited or me. The place where I spend a lot of my time on campus would have to the MU, because that is where all the food is. :) Attending ASU is the best thing that has happened to me.

Morgan

The school is huge but I love it. The size is the best part and the worst part though. The worst part about ASU is that it's hard to get good academic advising. Everything else about the size is either great or bearable.

Cameron

There are so many majors that you are guaranteed to find one you like. If you are one of the kids who doesn't want to party all the time, you will meet people like you in classes. Some of the policies are stupid, namely the scholarship policies, but the administration is unwilling to change this and will not supply answers for you. Some major advisors are not helpful but some are more helpful than you could ever imagine. I spend most of my time in the dorms, where I met a lot of cool new people.

Lindsay

I love the shuttle system at ASU. It makes it so that there is an efficient way to get to class on time. I think that ASU needs to do a better job about communicating about it's opportunities. There are many ways to have fun on campus and many helpful people on campus for anything that you need, you just have to find them. ASU is a huge school and it's getting bigger everyday. I like it though because it's easy to make a lot of diverse friends. I spend most of my time on campus. There is a park by the recreation center that many students go to unwind from the day. The biggest controvery on campus is whether or not the bus drivers can listen to a station that is "racist". It's a completely unfounded lie but what can you do? There is a lot of school pride expecially at the football games. I recommend going to the football games and tailgating. It's a fun way to meet people.

Chelsey

I love that ASU is a big campus and I also enjoy the large classes. My favorite thing about ASU would have to be the amount of school pride that is displayed. Football games were absolutely phenomenal to me seeing so many student fans dressed in gold. The spirit at the games is something I don't think can be found at any other university. All I know is that I have been waiting for this next season of football to begin! GO DEVILS!!!

Jamie

k what's the best thing about ASU? all the choices - classes, majors, places to live, ways to get around, people. one thing i'd change? the FREAKING OUT OF STATE TUITION. and parking. what a RIP OFF. size-wise? ASU could be too big, but the way it's set up, you don't have to get lost in the crowd, academically or socially. how do people react when i tell them where i go? depends. a lot of people are surprised that a square like me is at a school like "that". but people know the name and most people seem to consider a good school, despite its rep. where do i spend most of my time on campus? everywhere, really...im all over the place. i will need all new shoes for next year, even though i got all new shoes at the beginning of this year...i do that much walking. favorite places are my dorm (now that i'm free of my evil roommate), hayden library, and the dining halls. college town? well we've got mill avenue, which is like pearl street mall in boulder, colorado. aka, awesome. and there's great public transportation and a lot of cool stuff that's easy to get to and not far, like the ever-wonderful tempe marketplace, home of target. <3 ASU's administration? eat some fiber, visit the bathroom, and then turn around and look before you flush - that's my opinion of ASU's administration. biggest controversy on campus? people chasing you down asking you if you have a minute for the environment or for gay and lesbian rights, people standing and screaming about how masturbators and girls in strappy tank tops are all going to hell, etc. you can't go anywhere without dodging swarms of them. school pride? oh heck yes. i was shocked to see people actually WEARING the ugly school-themed t-shirts they give out free all the time. people get real into the whole sun devil thing (this does not include me). anything unusual about ASU? i wouldn't know...i've never really been to any other college. XD there's a lot of navajos and a lot of barely-hispanic people with national hispanic scholarships, i noticed. one experience i'll always remember? stupid question...how can i choose just one? party roommate, moving dorms in the middle of the night, tutoring little kids in south phoenix (which is NOT the nice part of town), all my classes so far, the orbit... most frequent student complaints? inflated out-of-state tuition, far away parking that costs a small fortune, foul dorms, overpaid president crow, campus stalkers (see above), the HEAT, internet (cisco clean access agent = evil incarnate), overpriced markets (where you can get toilet paper and odwalla bars and the like), dining hall hours that seem better suited to a retirement community that a college campus. (you're not allowed to be hungry at night or on weekends, pretty much) oh and math teachers that don't speak english. oh and one other thing just to mention...ASU gives our scholarships like leftover candy after halloween. oh and one thing that sucks about ASU is that you can't take pretty much ANY art or music classes unless you're an art or music major.

Alex

The atmosphere is wonderful! From the mature landscape and vibrant flowers to the old buildings and the cultural blend of people. Most people are impressed to hear that I'm going to ASU, but before I came here several adults did try to warn me about how to be safe around party people. There is a lot of school pride. Many of the people I pass each day wear school colors or logos somewhere on the attire. I remember the first time I saw the tight rope walkers practicing on Hayden lawn, between two small trees.

Kyle

At ASU, there are opportunities to meet people, get involved in campus activities, all accompanied by the freedom to explore ideas and decide what and who you want to be in life. There are always people on campus speaking about their religious or political beliefs which makes for a good atmosphere of discussion and oppeness.

Andy

ASU is huge if you like getting to know people ASU is a good place to go to. It allows you to travel to California and Mexico. It isn't really much of a college town unless you are 21 or have a fake I.D. other than that it is pretty cool. There are so many things to do so you will always have something to do. Go Sun Devils

Mckenna

I think ASU is a great school. There is a lot of activities students can get involved in. The campus is pretty big and there are plenty of people around. It's great for networking, meeting new people, getting help for school work. Another aspect that drew me to ASU is the school spirit, especially at sporting events. I love sports and especially this past year the students were in full school spirit mode for our football team and basketball team. I'm excited about the baseball season coming up and love that students are always there to support our athletes.

Stephanie

ASU is too big. It is really great that ASU is so diverse but the sheer number of students walking around campus and driving around campus is overwhelming. Sometimes classes are too large but the professors seem to have learned how to adapt to managing large classes. A lot of people spend time at the library on the computers or sleeping but many people I have found don't know how to navigate the library (not because it's confusing but because the students don't care). Mill avenue is definitely fun. It is a great college town with access to both more serious activities (jobs, research, etc.) and fun activities (clubs, shops, etc.). The only unusual thing about ASU is it's size and the weather. It's terribly hot most of the time but it means you can wear casual clothes all the time. The biggest controversy or event that happened recently was the MU fire. There still isn't a know cause and it caused a lot of problems for all the people who ate at the MU and the clubs that met there. It's getting back to normal now though.

Kyle

Some may feel ASU is way to large of a campus. Personally, I thought the size was perfect in all aspects. I enjoyed being part of the crowd. One thing I have learned is that there are very few people that, if given the chance, to attend Arizona State University, wouldn't take that opportunity. Everyone from out of state wants to go to ASU. The weather, the student body, the sports teams, the surrounding city, etc. are all the reasons why it is the greatest university in the country, hands down. The school pride is amazing at ASU. There is really no choice to root for your second favorite team. Its ASU or nobody. The experience at the ASU/UofA sports games is unreal. Although it is a lesser known rivalry across the nation, it is by far the most intense rivalry I have experienced.

Peyton

I think ASU is too large, but at the same time, I really like it because if we were too small and you knew everyone, then I would feel too suffocated. I like that I can walk around campus, see someone I know and feel special because I saw someone in such a large place. When people at home find that I go to ASU, they have good reactions... but most of them are older- parents... my sister is about to go to UA next fall as a new freshman- of course her reactions sucks. Since I'm an education student, I do not spend much time on campus at all- we are interning and student teaching (currently) and don't have classes on campus once we reach our junior year and are accepted into the professional program of education. total college town, which i LOVE ASU administration is OK- some people don't know what they're talking about and some are mean for no reason.. but there are also ones that rock. LOTS of school pride... go devils! I will always remember my freshman year- as that was the only year I spent on campus- living time and class time- I made great friendships and still hold close to that group from the dorm.

Kristina

The best thing about ASU is that there are multiple campuses. If you want that big city college experience you can get that at the Tempe campus. If you decide you want a focused major you can move to a smaller campus where you are much closer with your peers. School pride is ridiculous! We could lose every game for a decade and still have more school spirit than UofGAY(uofa)

Andy

The best thing is the Honors College and the willingness to defy academic convention. The worst thing is ASU 101 and mandatory meal plans, which give you more crap food than you could ever hope to eat, and generally the willingness to run it like a corporation. The school is definitely too large, but once you get integrated into your department it's manageable. Tempe was sort of a college town and is now a commercialized version of one. There are very few transit-friendly off-campus hangout spots for the underage or more studious. Tempe city government also discriminates against students in off campus housing and generally tries to pretend that the university doesn't exist and doesn't totally run their economy.
