What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Taylor

I have gotten all that I could out of my college experience so far. I maintain over a 3.0 each semester and I have built a relationship with a couple of my professors, which help me with references in the future. Also while maintaining good grades, I have joined a sorority on campus and thus participate in community service on and off campus. It has been valuable attending this school because I feel like I am learning a lot that is furhter helping me towards my ideal career path. I am being taught different accounting classes, economics classes, social classes, and computer classes that will thus help me in the future to whatever path I choose.

Luis

Attending college has motivated me to become an individual that embodies leadership, service, and education. Through my college experience, I have learned the importance of embracing diversity and accepting those who are different by coordinating campaigns that promote equality, social justice, and acceptance. I became more involved in my community by participating in social events, such as organzing food drives, tutoring students in mathematics at a local high school, and executing beautification projects in my neighborhood. Because of this involvement, I have also built invaluable social connections with different sectors of my community, i.e. schools, hospitals, food banks, homeless shelters, etc. All of these experiences in turn have made me the civil and visionary leader I am today. They have prepared with the skills and knowledge to be not only successful in future endeavors, but in life as well. My college experience has been valuable in that it gave me the encouragement and reason to become a passionate individual devoted to activism, altruism, and social service, allowing me to better myself both as a student and citizen.

My experience at West Los Angeles College has been an educational one. I chose to return back to school after suffering a catastrophic injury late in life. Once class began, I conclued I was about to start a new life. I found a comfort zone in the school library, where I recieved a great deal of tutoring and support from staff. Although I am somewhat older than the average students, age was not an issure when it came to study groups. I have gained knowledge in subject errors I never considered to be of use in everyday life. My experience in college has been enligtening; it has given me the opportunity to explore other avenues for survival, through education. As a student I have learned there are endless resources and support on campus that can guide one to sucess. Attending college is a memorable experience that offers a degree for success no one can ever take away from you.

Sarah

I have learned to appreciate an education. I used to think it was just a piece of paper. I enjoy my classes and am doing well in each one. I am able to relate many subjects to eachother. I am sending a message to my kids that it is never too late to go after your dreams and to be successful. I am also to take time to study with my kids and set a good example of how to study and how to really apply oneself to your goals. Attending school at my age has given me many opportunities to meet people of all ages and cultures. I have also been able to apply some of my education by volunteering and testing the waters to see if this is what I want to do. I am realizing that my choice to go to school to get a teaching credential is really going to be worth it because I am good with kids and I will be so much happier when I am able to work with them on my own.

Cesar

How could I describe the great experiences I've been getting from my college. My intelligence has really increased in just one semester and I hope to continue till the last day of senior year. Foremost, to me, college is considered one of the most important parts of my life. Knowing that my school is one of the most trusted school in the U.S. inspires me to be more spirited and love my school.

Muneeb

I believe my experiences can contribute to this honorable scholarship. It will achieve my goals significantly. By being awarded this scholarship, it will be easier to get a better career. I will be able to do things that I could have never imagined. My religion has impacted the way I view life. I am great communicating and can bring my thoughts. My situation (16 surgeries) can bring a new way of how people view life. Since I’ve been so fortunate, I want to help others who haven't had the same opportunities as me. I believe everyone have the same chance as me. His/her unfortunate circumstance shouldn't be counted against him/her. Hopefully in my lifetime, the poverty rate will go down. Once I get degree at UC Davis, this will give opportunities (e.g. jobs, network connections) that I would haven't otherwise. I want maximum this to the greatest potential. It would shameful to throw away. Despite having 16 surgeries over the last five-and-a-half years, I know many other people in this country and around the world are going through much more worse experiences. They need more assistance than me.

Rumiko

I have been able to see different types of people when attending my college. It is very diverse so you always meet new people.

Matthew

My biggest gain from my college experience was maturity.

Kimberly

I've gotten many things out of my college experience. It has given my brain the power to think outside of the box. Before I entered college, I was only thinking inside the box. With my college education, I feel that I am able to think more analtical and have more intelligent conversations than previously in my past.

stephen

In my one and a half years of college so far I have learned serveral life lessons that I will carry with me. College is not only a great place to make new friends and further your education, but it is also a place where you experience life in all of its forms. College is valuable to attend because of the value placed in a college degree. Additionally, college is valuable to me because when I graduate I will become a seconds lieutenant in the U.S. Army and go on to serve my country.

Christine

The most valuable part of my college experience has been meeting my best friend Drew. As freshman we met while volunteering off campus and realized we had the same major and were in some of the same classes. We've learned to work together and help each other out to reach our academic goals. Plus, on a campus that is so huge it can be hard to find someone that shares the same values and passion that you do. ASU students are stereotyped as promiscuous partiers, and it was nice to meet someone that wasn't interested in going out on a Friday night to get wasted. Meeting Drew has kept me grounded, and I feel like without him I may have lost myself by trying to be part of the social scene. Overall, the best part of my college experience hasn't been all of the friends that I've made, but the one friend that will love me not for how many shots I can do, but for my academic drive, career motivation, and passion for the environment.

Matthew

ASU has been a positive influence on me because in high school I wasn't very involved and stayed in sort of a shell, shielded from others. But now that I came here I have learned that you must break that shell. I have made so many more friends through activities I'm involved in; Army ROTC, jiu jitsu, working out. It made me realize how much I missed out on in high school by being shy it makes me want to go back and change it.

Amy

I have gotten many things out of my college experience. Of the many, I have learned to be responsible. I have learned to be responsible for myself. I learned to be independent, take care of myself, motivate myself to study in school, and be the grown up that I should be. I have also learned to be accepting. There are many different people on campus from all walks of life, they all have something to share, and everyone, no matter how different they are to us, how unfamiliar they seem from the people I was exposed to at home, deserves to be accepted.

Melanie

I have learned so much from college so far, not only from classes, but also from living away from home. In all honesty, I think I have learned more about being an adult than I have about becoming a teacher. That is not to say that I am not learning about my major, just that my educational experience has been outshined by college life. I have learned how to feed myself properly and how to manage my finances. I have also learned about managing my time, between work, school, family, friends, and fun/down time. I truly believe that I have become a very well rounded person becuase I came to college. Moving across the country on my own, has been a very eye-opening experience for me. Without school, I would still be in Ohio, living at home, working at a pizza hut, and doing nothing with my life. I would not have had the opportunity to become who I am now, a strong, independent, hardworking young woman.

Brittany

My major has a great network of professional internships and connectings throughout Arizona. I've enjoyed my professors because many of them were award-winning journalists and highly acclaimed professionals in their area. The overall experience at ASU was great because I've made friends from all over the country and world.

Keyu

The ability to handle my life filled up all kinds of differences and cultural shock. Being a transferred international student, I have to get use to the different way of teaching in class, the different environment, the different language along with the cultural difference. Being on my own, I am getting the ability to cope with all these problems while I have to achieve a outstanding academic height. Dealing with problems with the best way is always required in the society since we live in a world full of problems. Attending college is far more than acquiring basic profesional knowledge. It is the ability to learn and to solve problems that does matter. It is always better to learn how to fish rather than the fish itself.

Jenna

So far out of my college experience I have gotten to know more about the world and have been able to find who I am. College is very valuable to attend because in the end you will be making a difference in the world and helping it to become a better place for America's future children.

Dari

My collage experience has taught me that success comes from faith, hard work, a positive heart, mind and attitude and the willingness to bless others. If I set out to be excellent in all that I do I will get excellent results. I have learned to make positive academic choices; thus becoming a well rounded student and individual. The most valuable aspect of attending college is that I have learned to be aware of the world around me and sensitive to the plight of others. Also I have learned so much about the human condition that I can take the knowledge and share it will my community. I have something to give back now.

Anna

As a current student of Community College of Aurora in Colorado I have deepen my personal and academic knowledge through successful full-time study. The college built a perfect foundation for learning with its science and computer laboratory, excellent teaching, and useful tutoring. Knowledge gained in subjects was easy and interesting to apply in real life. Here I have experienced a magnificent opportunity to accomplish academic projects that widen my knowledge and develop logical-thinking ability. Therefore, I had the pleasure of participating in the Global Climate Conference with presentation of a beneficial plan of using alternative and ecologically friendly sources of energy in the face of the global climate change. Moreover, in a Global Citizen Conference I presented a poster about a common disease in order to aware the audience about it. These projects built my self-confidence, develop creative problem-solving ability and expand my knowledge in the subject. This educational establishment is valuable to attend for ability to develop personal characteristics and gain professional skills that benefit our community. I am proud to be a student of this college, because every day here brings exiting experience and new skills.

Goingto the Community College of Allegheny County has helped me prove to different institutions, programs and especially 4-year colleges that I have the ability to do good college work if I get a chance. CCAC was the only institution where I could afford to go to but thanks to faculty members' care about student future well being, I have come to realize I have the potential to fulfill my dream of receiving a quality education and one day returning to my native country of Burkina Faso and apply my talents to improve the lives of my fellow countrymen.

Erica

I have learned very important lessons about making art. ASU has changed my perspective on what art is, how it's done, and how I should approach it. I have really expanded my scope of artistic techniques, as well as how I incorporate meaning into my work, or more importantly, if that's even necessary. I've gone from being completely disinterested in Art History to considering taking it as a second major. Although at times, my teachers have annoyed me or made me feel bad about my abilities or my art, all the pain has been for my own good. I now feel confident in my ability to succeed in the world of FIne Arts.

Shellby

I have gotten so much out of my college experience. I've learned to be more independent and to take care of myself. I know what I need to focus on and I know what I need to do to succeed. It has been a big transaction from high school and I now know everything has to be done on your own. No one is there to tell you to do your homework and you have no consequences besides failing the class. I have grown up a lot since the start of college and it has opened my eyes to many new opportunities, like volunteering abroad or joining different organizations. College has been valuable to me because I have become independent and it is preparing me for my future career in either Special Education or Psychology. So far college has been a good experience for me and I would never take this opportunity back.

Dennis

I have truly learned about myself while attending college. I now know how hard of a worker I am, and how dedicated I am to bettering my life and living to my fullest capability. I have been faced with many trivial times and have prevailed because of my determination, and commitment to a higher education. While attending college I have truly received genuine knowledge and insight on the subjects I have taken. I am able to successfully reiterate topics covered in class nd even expand on discussions we have had. College has been very special to me because I am the first person in my family to attend, so far it has been an amazing experience and blessing to be able to learn and experience so all that college has to offer.

C.

College has taught me what I want and how to better contribute to the world around me. It has been invaluable because it has made me grow up and learn to deal with people different than myself. Respect and responsibility are the best things I have gotten out of college.

Kristen

I have been able to really grow into myself since beginning my time at ASU. I have been able to attend many different and unique events and have been able to get to know many interesting people. This has allowed me to get out of my box and see how other people see the world. The number of oppertunities I have had here has allowed me to get to know better what it is I want out of college, and of life. I have been able to volunteer places, learn about other majors that may interest me in the future, and learn how my major may help me after graduation. I have gotten to know so many interesting people who have shown me new ways to view the world, and this has helped me tremendously. Coming to a big school like ASU allowed me to stop being so shy and to open up more. I am convinced that there are few schools that have all that ASU has, and I am grateful to have decided to attend.

Charlie

Since the day I returned to my college journey I have ravenously pursued excellence. I have retaken old classes and have consistently raised my GPA each semester. I have joined my fellow students in clubs and competitions, volunteered my time to school activities, and have learned more than I could have imagined. These experiences include being a member of the college anthropology club as well as volunteering my time to the astronomy department for community activities. I have also donated my time to the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute in the form of volunteer work at community storytelling events and local festivals, as well as helping with social networking efforts. My federal work study has given me the chance to give to the school, while learning and earning money for college. I have put my best foot forward and have been rewarded with not only a personal sense of accomplishment but I have also earned an academic excellence award at this year's awards ceremony. The most important thing I have gotten from my college experience though is a personal sense of accomplishment and a feeling that anything is possible.

Sarahi

College has given me many things. It has taught me to be more independent, it has given me a bigger perspective on life and on myself, it has given me the opportunity to experience things I might not have had I not gone to college, and overall it is giving me the opportunity to find myself and be prepared for life as an adult. College is definitely a valuable experience and I am glad to have taken that step to attend, I am having a great time and am making memories that are sure to last a lifetime, it is a unique opportunity that I value extremely. I know all the effort I am putting into this college experience will pay off once I graduate and I am thankful for getting this opportunity, both of attending college, and of applying for this scholarship that would be a great blessing and help in accomplishing my goal of graduating college.

Catherine

I have learned many interesting things about exercise science, the history of the English language, geography, and music.

Courtney

I have mostly learned a lot through my various classes, though I feel that some classes were far more valuable or memorable than others. I've never been very social, so do not feel like I've made important new friends in college, but I do feel that my art and skill in foreign languages has improved drastically. I feel that is the most valuable part of college, is what you've learned in those classes that pertain to your focuses.

Lisa

I have gotten knowledge in areas that have helped me with my career goals. I am able to use a computer, write a sentence, write a letter, and write a memorandum. Something I was not able to do before I attended college. I am able to feel a sense of security and professionalism when I attend a work assignment. I feel I have made an accomplishment in my life. I want to set a good example for my son and granddaughter. I hope my attending college will give my granddaughter the motivation and inspiration to attend college when she becomes of age. In college you meet people with different career paths and cultures, which is very interesting to me. A very important reason for attending college is you can choose a position that pays excellent wages according to your credentials, which is always a good thing. In other words you can demand the type of salary when you hold a degree. The higher the degree, the more of a salary you can demand.

Nicholas

So far, I have goteen many thing out of my college experience. One main thing is that I have been learning to deal with new people, and accept them for who they are. Another thing is that I have been learning to think more critically for many different problems. One last thing that I have gotten out of my experience is fun. It is weird to say, but this time of my life is really fun, and I don't want to let it pass right by without even experiencing it.

Danielle

The main thing I have gotten is an education. Education these days is so valuable, I can't even begin to list all the ways. I only hope I can continue to attend to recieve a degree.

Kristen

So far the best thing that has come out of my college experience has been a growing understanding of who I am. I am very glad to have attended a large university on the other side of the country from where my parents live because the oppertunities I have had here are much better than anything I could have found back home. The number of clubs here that you can join is so large that I knew there would be something for me, and there definitely has been. The vast majority of the people here on campus are willing to help you find what you are looking for, from the factulty and staff to the community assistants you can't help but have someone to help you through the tough transition process. However, being on a campus this large means that if you want help or guidance from someone you have to be the one to go and ask for it, and this has really helped me to step out of my shell and grow as a person. My confidence in what my plans are and who I am has most definitely been boosted by attending Arizona State.

Terri

Before I attended college I was very selfconscious about myself and hesitant when it came to talking to new people. Now that I have begun college I am starting to find myself and I am breaking down the walls I had put up before. College has brought out my self confidence and my courage to start conversations amongst my peers without feeling reluctant. I am gaining so much from my college experience, because I chose to make the most of it. Now is the time where I am growing into the adult I wish to become, and I feel as though college is the best place for me to make these changes. Attending college is giving me so much insight to a succesful future and I intend to make the most out of this valuable experience given to me.

Melani

My mother (who was unable to finish grade school) imprinted the importance of an education into my brain. I always knew that I HAD to go to college. However, it wasn’t until I attended college that I realized how much I wanted to attend! The diversity of people (both students and professors) is so incredible that you can learn copious amounts without ever setting foot in a classroom. And once you so enter a classroom you meet encounter professionals that know their area of study and are interested in sharing it with you and watching you succeed. I could have easily taken all my classes online but I’d be missing a key part in my education. Attending college is essential to me because it has shown me the value of having educated peers that motivate you to keep progressing. ASU has taught me that, with a bit of dedication and ingenuity, one can make a career out of a topic they are passionate about.

rebecca

Attending college has been a lifelong dream. Arizona State University has granted my dream and my parents dream to see me attend a university and be the first in the family to do so. Arizona State University has opened the door to many possibilites and has enrichened my academic life. I have met many people from walks of life and have gained from those experiences in a positive way. Proffesors as well as students have encouraged me to continue persuing my dream of graduating in Journalism and to continue expanding my knowledge by educating myself beyond graduation. Although, the institution I attend isn't on the top 10 best universities list, I value being a student at Arizona State University very much. I am thankful to be attending a university because there are many people who would give anything to be granted this privilidge and for a circumstance they are not able to attend. Coming from a low income family, knowing what it's like to make ends meet, having my parents help me with my education costs, makes me value my education more than anything. ASU has given me knowledge, power, and courage to grow and better the world.

Chanelle

Attending ASU and being apart of the culture here has been, so far, a very valuable experience. I've attended two summer programs, one for Native Americans called the Native American Summer Institute, and another that offers 7 college credits while introducing you to college life called, Summer Bridge. My classes for the fall are what I wanted and I have attended various campus get togethers that encourage one to join organizations and clubs while giving me the opportunity to meet new people. My experience at ASU so far has been very valuable, and I know the years to come will be too.

Victoria

I have gained a lot of personal strengths from my experience on the ASU Tempe campus such as time management skills, a strong sense of independence, as well as a better sense of judgement. College is much different from high school in the sense that you have much more free time that you have to spend responsibly. I think it was very important to learn how to balance that time between school, work and fun because it will set you up for success in life after school where you are obligated to budget all of your time. I also became more independent as a result of my college experience because I moved on campus away from home. I had nobody telling me what to do and when to do it, I had to figure it out all on my own. That made me a stronger person. I developed better judgement while living around students making irresponsible choices because when you are surrounded by bad examples, it is hard to succeed if you lackbetter judgement. My college experience thus far has helped me mature immensely.

Kira

The most valuble aspect of attending a four year institution comes from carving a way to think about and view the world. Critical thinking skills are not something that can be taught from a book in a single course; rather these skills are hatched from a broad respresentation of all dynamics in education. In learning from many disciplins and learning to integrate these many disciplins, four year institutions are teaching us to be able to view the world in a compassionate and thoughtful light. There is little that can compare with not only understanding the reasoning behind a prognosis or expected outcome, but with being able to justify the actions behind. This gives the student/learner so much more compasion and leads to creation of a better world. Knowledge is not only power, but a tool to insight and understanding of how our world is and what we can do to help it.

Lindsey

I'm an out-of-state student from California and was please to be accepted into the University of my dreams (Arizona State University), because my goal was the apply for the Walter Cronkite School. I have been a full time student at ASU since an incoming freshman for Fall '08- Spring '10. I landed a job in the Arizona State Athletics Department. My job description was giving tours of the department for prospective football recruits and their families, answering the football phone doing secretarial work, also filling football tapes, and helping to set up football banquets. This professional job really helped me promote SunDevil pride to students all over campus. I have always carried a large load of classes (17 credits) and have never gotten a cumulative GPA lower than 2.96. I was very pleased that my second year at ASU because I have received my goal of a 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply for the Walter Cronkite School, and was admitted. I’m so thrilled to be apart of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism because I know with knowledge this school will give me I can fulfill my goals of becoming a world class journalist.

Megan

Learning how to provide for myself has perhaps been my biggest lesson thus far. I went from standing in my parents shadow to stepping out and handling affairs on my own. My college experience has been challenging but extremely rewarding. I am in a great place in my life where I can balance the carefreeness of my youth and the independence of my adulthood. College is a great place to grow and learn more about yourself and the people you want to surround yourself with.

Krystel

I have gotten incredible connections and amazing friendships that can not be found anywhere else. I have also gotten a wonderful eduacation that I can not get anywhere else. It has been valuble to attend because I can not find any of these experiences anywhere else and am very grateful and lucky to have them.

Jeff

When I first entered college I considered daily the value and utility that my education held for me. I felt that receiving a reputable degree in my field would afford me rewards that would be unattainable through any other source. I was right, but I was wrong to care. It was valuable for me to attend college, but it was more valuable to my community than it was to me. I believe that if more people were willing to acknowledge the social value of education before the individual use-value that learning would be taken more seriously. To be fair, a number of things occured for me personally, the values of which I can't deny. I was exposed to several brilliant professors. I was challenged by strong peers in my field of study. I was even forced to reconsider a number of beliefs I held strongly before enrolling. Nonetheless, I met a number of individuals who were more interested in partying than learning, and others who were attending college so that they could earn more money later. This is not would college is about. My college experience was valuable because learning is intrinsically valuable for me and the community.

Andres

I have so far gotten a great education and learned a lot about how the world is run. I have also learned to care for myself as I am an adult now. I believe that it is valuable to attend college in order to set my self up for the future.

Whitney

I have made many new friends and learned many new things that have diversified my mind. The most valuable thing about attending college is how it is the gateway to my future career as an Air Force Officer.

Tamara

The experience that I got out of my college Middle Georgia College is the small classes and the nice teachers who are always willing to help and go the extra to make sure you understand what they are throwing at you. The food is fantastic because we have a good variety of food and drinks and lets not mention its a buffet YUM... The bonuses are the dorms, you have your own room with a good size bed, desk, vanity, and you share a bathroom. Its just so great because im not to far from home, but im not that close to where my parents they can bother me but their close enough to when I need them their there. But all in all I love my college because it is so homely and I feel so safe and that I actually belong.

John

I have gotten much more than just an education based experience in my three years of attending Arizona State University. I have learned many new things about myself and what I am capable of doing individually. I have gained ample experience working as an effective member of a team in the many group projects I have done and those newfound skills will be a huge asset when I land a job after graduating. Three years of taking college courses has helped me improve my personal discipline and especially my time management skills. I have also met a lot of great people from all over the country and even the world and I feel that this has had a very positive impact on my perception and ability to understand others that appear to be much different than me. I have made several lifelong friends in my time at Arizona State and living on campus for two years and off it for one has been a wonderful learning experience. Being a part of a campus as large and unique as Arizona State's is something that cannot be replaced and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life.

Lindsey

Before college I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I had been laid off from my job, recovering from a massive ankle fracture, and barely getting by on unemployment. I came to a point where I realized that enough is enough and that if I ever wanted to be successful in life I really needed to obtain a four year degree. My college experience has proven to be valuable to me because my education is something that I can always fall back on. Regardless of the current economic state, I know that my education will be something that I can always fall back on. No employer anywhere can take that away from me.

sharelle

I have learned that without a college degree you wont make more than minimum wage out of this society. Times is tough and everything in life is getting expensive and you never afford to live the expensive lavish life without a college degree. Everything you learn in school will in some type of way benefit you if its just math or english it all plays a major part. As a child i never knew what i will become in life but all of my teachers and counselors never pushed me into anything they was always there step by step in every decisions that i`ve made. Some students don`t attend college because their scared about the school work and their afraid of not passing all of their classes but if you stay focused and don`t let anyone distract you or discourage you from your dreams theres always something out there for you to achieve. I am a full time student and yes its complicated but i know that everything will pay off for me. Also, internship is something that will get you prepared for real situations in your careerfield. Stay in school and you will get rewarded trust.

Ana

well I am still in college and I think it is the best and greatest experince one can have in life. I mean if High School was fun, college is way better. yeah we have more work but you see how you grow up and refect on how one has grown up. College benefits you in life in so any ways.
