What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nicole

My college experience has allowed me to grow up and mature tremendously. I am from Illinois and go to college in Texas. That was one huge adjustment for me. I went to a high school of about 5,000 students, and not one of them attend college in Texas. All my friends and family live/attend school in the Midwest, so I came to college completely alone. I was forced to learn how to take care of myself, go out of my comfort zone to meet new people, and to manage my time well. At first, it was hard and scary. All I wanted to do was go home and/or transfer to a university where all my best friends go. It was a challenging first year, but I could not be happier with the choice I made to attend Baylor. It has really helped mold me into the woman I strive to be, and I would not have been able to do that if I had stayed within my comfort zone at a state school where everyone from my high school went; there's no comparable value to that.

The thing that I have gotten out of my college experience is how to take 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} responsible for all my actions, better study habbits, and how to manage my time. College have taught me a lot about myself such as finding my inner self and to never put things off until the last minute. I look at myself now as being a better person and knowing what I want and how to go get it. College have taught me that partying is not always the answer that I should make time to go over my notes at least 15 minutes a day everyday until I can understand the information and also it will help me to store the information in my long term memory. I have also learned that I have to want this for myself and not for any one in order for me to really be successful in school.

I've learned that going to class is a very important part of my grade, going to a community college is a lot cheaper than a university & seeing an advisor makes picking out classes a lot easier. I've also found out that going to a university is very different from a community college because it's harder to get the schedule I want & it's harder to find parking. It's been valuable to attend college because I've become more independant since I live on my own, I've learned more about myself & what career I can see myself doing in the future. College has been an amazing learning experience so far & I plan on enjoying it for another 3 more years.

Jonathan

i have gotten multiple important credits at a discounted local community college. this experience has prepared me for the trandfer to a four-year university.

Jose

More than anything, my college experience has awakened the thirst for knowledge that I had when I was younger. The faculty and the school has reminded me that in order to learn I also have to understand. While that may sound a bit redundant, I mean to say that the school helps to teach students who come in thinking that they're are well prepared and ready for the next challenge a sense of humility. A student needs to understand from what sense of authority and knowledge that the teacher comes from before they can fully appreciate the power of their words. With this lesson in mind, one can start to really begin to learn what's before them rather than simply memorize and repeat. The lessons here are life lessons meant to guide you behind these walls.

Since coming to Baylor, I have grown drastically in my faith and have built a much closer relationship with Christ. Community plays a huge role in the lives of students at Baylor. It provides a cooperative spirit emphasizing the importance of unity in a student body to work together to succeed as a whole. Students at Baylor are privileged to live and go to school in a community that demonstrates the body of Christ and the church. Also, since attending Baylor, I have become more independent and responsible and have grown as an individual. I have discovered my passion for psychology and children and wish to pursue my education at Baylor.

There are learning experiences that people get that they may not necessarily get when they are at home. I thought of myself as a very independent person when I was still living with my mom. After I moved out and got my own apartment, I realized that there are a lot more things that my mom had to deal with than just making a rent payment. Time management has become a very important aspect of my life. I have to manage my time and distribute it among my friends, work, and school. Classes have given me a large network of people that I may not have otherwise known. I have met people from all over the country and from other countries as well. I feel like college has gotten me one step closer to being ready to step out into the "real world".

When I first started college I was sure that I would be a psychologist and I felt like I had so many options on what type of psychologist I could be and the then I came to college. Coming to college has shown me that there are so many other options . My world has opened up because now I can see that all my goals are attainable. I love learning and college has shown me that learning is very rewarding.

I have grown so much as a person since going to Baylor. I feel that this university has helped me grow so much and I have learned so much. I've made mistakes but I've learned from them. I've met some of the greatest people here; from professors and staff to students. This university has made me a fighter. When you get knocked down by grades or whatnot one must get back up and fight the fight to get where they want to be in this life. We only get one shot and Baylor has taught me that through persistence and perseverance you can accomplish anything. I've gotten alot out of this university personally. I grew and have become a very strong person who is so determind for the best in my life. I will forever be greatful to this university and the people who have shaped my life and who I have become today.

I've learned the importance of being independent while also learning to utilize the tools that are all around me. It is important to understand that I am responsible for my own success or failure and that if I want to succeed, I have to make that happen. At the same time however, I have learned that there are dozens of people in the world who are willing to help me make the most of my life. As long as I am willing to utilize their help, I can take positive steps towards improving my life.

I only attended Boise State University for one semester and only too one class in winter semester in 2007. I am going back for fall 2011. I learned that takin notes is very important. Some of the professors took material from their own lectures and presentation for quizzes and assignments as well as information from the text book. While I attended it helped with my listening skills. I am now able to listen asn retain more information better because of it.

My college life so far has been irreplacable. From the knowledge that I have learned to the friendships that I have made, I think all my experiences so far have been very positive. Even through all of the academic struggles that I've faced, I believe that with all the knowledge I have gained, the work has been worth it. The overall friendly environment allows any personality to fit in, and because of that there is much diversity among my friends. I love having the college experience at Baylor University.

Martin

The most valuable thing I have extracted from my time in college is the fact that I had no idea who I was. I was raised with my parent's beliefs and their outlook on life, and I never realized that it defined who I was my whole life. College has let me explore my own personal beliefs and has let me voice my own opinions rather than the opinions I grew up with. College helped me find myself.

Chelsey

Throughout my college experience, I have gained the knowledge that can only be gained through experience. Of course I learned important, educational knowledge that I could only attain from going to that early bird 8am class, but I learned other things as well. I learned that being at such a large institution, we consume many resources and energy that we cannot replace or renew. At Baylor University we have taken into account all the resources that we consume and use and simply use less to help others throughout the world. Some other experiences that I have also learned from is that you should never wear heels to class, don't feed these crazy eyed squirrels and you don't have to eat the food in the cafeteria until you pop (I promise, you'll regret it in a few hours). College is hard and it is a challege, but it is the best thing that I could have ever done in my life. I know that in the future, I will know that I did the right thing by choosing to go to college. Until then my life plans are: study, work, sleep and repeat.

Eron

The experience at Baylor is eye opening in many ways. One being that you are truly on your own when you got to college. Baylor has taught me to be an independent person. You learn to manage social time and study time. Being on your own makes you realize if you do not have a job you can not buy anything. In college you have to take what you are given. I have also learned from my experience not to lose myself. Being a black male student at Baylor can take some adjusting when you look around in classes of 100-200 - people consist of 4 or maybe 5 black students. But the thing about Baylor not every person is the same. I have learned you cannot judge people by appearence, some people I would've never thought to be my friend are my best friends. The most vaulable thing I have learned from Baylor is to not take for granted what you have and what you have been given. That being said the college experience has changed my life for the better. Hopefully I can continue my education here at Baylor.

Nicholas

Religion. Maturity. Friends. Freedom. These words describe a few of the things that I gained by attending Baylor. And yet, they hardly do justice to the experience I have undergone as a college student. I have chosen to increase my knowledge and my education at the same time. Which is great; oftentimes, one lets his college "knowledge" interfere with his education, which, as the great Winston Churchill reminded us, is not a good path to follow. I believe that one must choose the college they want to attended with care and thought; otherwise, one may end up in a place where he is unable to learn or live comfortably. Fortunately, I made the right decision by coming to Baylor. Baylor instills values into its students and professors, and any visitors to the university can tell this immediately. I have learned how to balance religion and education in my life, and how to integrate them into my future. I have learned how to work in groups, an essential skill needed to succeed in the business world. Finally, I have learned how to be me. College opened the doors to so many future paths, and I still have years before I graduate.

Chelsea

In the three years that I have attended Baylor University, i have made some lifelong friends, learned the best ways to study for exams that will help me to remember the information much longer than simply memorizing and draining it days after an exam. I feel like a valued member of the Baylor community and am so thankful for the opportunities that the University is and will continue to provide for me.

I have grown up a lot since I have been at college and the learning enviornment around me has really helped to nourish that growth. There is a strong christian influence at this school and I have loved all of the faculty and students I have met here. I feel like I belong to this school and I am apart of a community, which helps encourage me to do well in my studies. I have always wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a kid. And I am just glad that I get to learn from one of the best nursing schools in the state. Baylor is an excellent school and everyone should at least take a good look at it when they are considering which college to attend!

Being in an educational atmosphere is my ideal environment and always has been; with the ever changing and ever flowing range of ideas on the proverbial battlefeild, I see it as the riches form of intellectual nourishment possible. I can not only see the world in a brighter, more probing light, but I can see myself clearer than when I was not challenged by presented issues and when I, because of this, did not need to demand more of my own mind. It is true that, in my own way, I searched for ways to broaden my gaze, but, without reciprocating provocation, my efforts were for not. I find that as you go through life, you encounter many things, all which you may learn from, but few experiences or relationships can give you as much to show for your efforts and accomplishments as a true educational institution and the rapport one may build with those who make the functioning work of art proficient and contagious.

Sierra

I have learned so much about myself and so much about other people. I have learned to be a servant and look to the best of others and their needs and at the same time learn the things that I need and not be afraid to get help in order to attain those things. I have learned that there are so many types of different people but that our differences make life so much more fun and interesting. My life has been enriched by getting to experience so many different classes and subjects. My mind has been stretched and filled and I know that every day it will continue to be changed even more. I will never be the same after I complete college and I know that I will be socially, culturally, and sprititually better for all the experiences that I have had.

I honestly chose Baylor University because my parents didn’t let me go out-of-state for school. I pretty much felt like I was settling when I confirmed admission. Now, after only a few months of being here, I look back at how naïve I was and ignorant to Baylor's greatness. The faculty is so willing to help students and there are resources everywhere on campus that allow students to truly succeed here. There is definitely diversity, and it shows through the variety of organizations on campus. The religious aspect of this school shouldn’t scare students off because they can be as involved or uninvolved as they want in spiritual life. Another thing that makes the Baylor experience so great is the emphasis that is put on reaching out to the community and undergraduate research. The school spirit and traditions that exist at the school are other things that make Baylor such an awesome community. It is a well-rounded campus, with strong academic and athletic programs. A Baylor education is definitely something that I'l never cease to be proud of. I’m a Baylor Bear and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Learned more about myself and others

Meredith

At first I was very nervous to be attending college. I kept hearing horror stories of people failing out or graduating and not finding a job. But when I stepped on campus I immediately felt like I belonged there. I loved it! I made friends and joined in on campus activities. I even made a 3.4 my first semester! I learned so much from the 2 years I’ve been at college. So far my college experience has taught me that the world isn’t so scary when you really look at it. People can actually be friendly and helping. I don’t have to go on feeling alone and afraid, I just have to be myself and really enjoy what I chose to do. Attending college has been very valuable to me. I have learned so much more than I thought and it really encouraged me to want to give back to my community. I decided to be a registered nurse that I can always be an advocate for people that normally wouldn’t have much of a voice. I wouldn’t trade my college experience for anything.

Bethany

My college experience has been amazing. It is wonderful to be around so many well trained and experienced professionals that can teach me everything I want and need to know about the Diesel/Automotive Industry. They are experts who can answer any questions I have. I have matured so much. I have found that the world is a lot different than what I thought it was. Once I found something I wanted to do the decisions for my life became much easier to make. In high school I was not the best student, I did not have the best grades, and I had no purpose to my life. College has given me self-confidence and purpose. Now, I am learning something I love, and I get to learn it in a way that I understand it. When I complete my college program, I will be very successful in what I want to do. I will be able to go to an employer and show them that I am knowledgeable, that I have excellent training, and that I am a professional because of what I have learned at Lincoln College of Technology.

Kyle

I have learned to think for myself. To form my own ideals based not on my what my parents have told me, but what i have experienced. I have learned to defend my beliefs, but have also gained a new appreciation for open-mindedness. I have learned for growth to happen there must be conflicting interest allowed to develop so that progress must be made in melding the two so that the best possible solution is always met.

Astire

My college experience has been a huge part of my life. The classes I have taken have given me insight on the world. I have learned that I want to do more for people. Whether it is teaching young ones about nutrition or helping build a house with Habitat for Humanity. College has given me the tools to communicate and understand the communication process. Since my parents never had an education it taught me to teach them and help them understand why we are the way we are. From the Psychology to the History and Spanish courses I have taken, they have helped me gain an appreciation for learning. High school was not my favorite but now that I am in College it is different. I feel I found myself. I also love reading which to many is a suprise because I hated to read when I was younger. I am taking nursing classes now and it is amazing to learn about the physiology of your body because it can help anybody in the world.

Louisa

So far out of the one and a half years that I have attended college, I have learned the importance of taking seriously what I want to do with my life. I go to school everyday and usually meet an adult with kids, putting themselves through college, yet again. They always say that they should've never dropped out in the first place and had stuck through with it. I desire to learn from other people's mistakes and take advantage of the opportunities my school has given me so far. I think that it is valuable to go to college in order to make sense of oneself and to find what interests you and you could see yourself doing. As it was once said, " if you find a job that you love it will never seem like a job", in my opinion, I think that that statement is entirely true. I strive to find the career and job just right for me and by going to school it gives me the chance to find my niche it the world.

Maria

I have yet started College so I am not really sure. Getting enrolled into College was really complicated though, I have been having a lot of complications with Finanical Aid and my Mom now won't be able to help me pay for school. I have been applying for a lot of scholarships throughout the weeks since I have been enrolled, I really hope I catch a few because I am really scared of paying school all by myself which I am currently unemployed and collecting unemployment. I am ready to start school and get on with learning about my future career so I can finally have an adult job. I really wish I started College after I graduated High School now, I would of been on my way by now.

Attending college has showed me a lot of things. For example i have learned how to be more organized and learned how to make room for money. Being in college made me wonder "how did I accomplished to graduate from high school?" now i practice every day. i have to organize my schedule, make room for some homework. every now and then i feel frustrated because i can not organize my time to make my homework at home and come to school. so i bought my first calendar and i presured myself to be more organized with my time. i lovge attending school is like if i am learning new things every semester and that way when my neace attends school i can help her out to or any family and friends. i am also have to learn how to plan my budget because i was 1 semester with out money and it was hard to get the materiasl the proffesor required me to get. i somethimes have to ask my sister or friends for a loan so i can get that and then pay them when i have cash to pay them. i value attending college.

Charles

Attending Baylor University best choice I have made in life. I am becoming confident in the material being taught and learning not only published material but hands on, field experience that will allow me to succeed in my profession.

Chelsey

My college experience has been extremely valuable to me because it has allowed me to grow and prepare for my future career. Through challenging but manageable classes as well as outside activities, including sports and organizations, I have been able to mature as an individual. It has also been valuable for me to attend this college because I did not have to give up myself; people accept me for who I am and where I came from, so I do not have to be someone that I am not. My providing resources, financial, academic, and supportive, I have been able to attend the college of my choice and succeed. My college experience has been valuable as far as my future career goes because it has prepared me, by using the most up-to-date resources, for a profession. My college experience has been truly transforming as I have developed into a stronger individual while also being successfully prepared for the future career path that I have chosen.

My experience at Hinds Community College has given me many experiences and opportunities that will help me throughout life. Hinds has given me the opportunity to be a Hinds Community College Cheerleader, an officer in the Biology Club, participate in the International Studies program, and have many other club and social connections. The teachers have taught above and beyond the required course work and have always prepared extra time to stay after class and help me and other students whenever necessary. The greatest value of Hinds is that the instructors give you every aspect you need to complete any career goal. They make sure the information required for the course is understood thoroughly and that every student has the opportunity to learn the information. Choosing Hinds Community College as the first step of my career goal created experiences that will reside with me forever.

Hayley

I believe my education from this university will be very valuable and I have gained many friendships and learned new things.

Brittany

The most important value I have received from my college experience is my appreciation for my education. In the time that I have been attending college one of the most important things that I am taking with me is my education. I think about all of the material things in life that I possess, and something as simple as a fire could take it all away, but the information that I obtain in class, nothing or no one will ever be able to take away from me. The knowledge that I possess from my college career, will always be inside of me whenever I may need to use it, and because of that I value my education most from my college experience.

Jane

During my 3 years here at Baylor University, I have learned what it means to create goals for myself, how to strive to reach those goals, but at the same time realize the importance of life outside of college as well. Attending numerous classes on campus, I have constantly been challenged by my professors to stretch my boundaries, and have conducted my own research experiments, written countless research papers, and spent hours in the library learning how to learn. However, though academically I have learned a significant amount of information, being in a poverty stricken community such as Waco has also taught me a separate set of values as well. I am co-director of a mentor program called Baylor Buddies. Through this program, Baylor students are matched up with children in the surrounding schools who are considered “at risk”. Baylor students visit their buddies for an hour each week, mentoring these children who are at severe risk for dropping out of school early on in life. These types of opportunities I have found in college have taught me what it means to care for one’s community and the impact we, as college students, can have outside our campuses.

Quinton

After a year at Baylor I have gathered a plethora of useful life lessons. A big lesson to learn is that there are many ways to solve a problem, but compromise and teamwork are almost always part of the most effective solution. Although some people have a few different ideals, there can still be plenty in common and a little acceptance can create a great friendship. The most important lesson I've been pondering lately is time management. Delayed gratification is always better than delayed disappointment. I have realized that in order to attain success in life fun must be set aside until the grunt work is done. Whether it's a long night of studying instead of playing basketball or completing homework a little early, it makes for a happier future. These 3 lessons will go a long way in my future and present.

Samantha

Even though I did not fit in at this school, I learned a lot about who I am and what I believe. I was challenged personally and academically, so even though I transferred, I still am very grateful that I had that experience.

Stacey

I have learned in just the 3 weeks that I have gone that if I hadn't listened to my self-talk, I would probably still be stuck in a rut like I was and ever since I enrolled, I learned so much about myself and what I need to do to weed out the negative people in my life that had kept me from continueing my education. It was been so valuable to attend not only because I have always wanted to work in the medical field but also it would make my family proud along with myself and that's very important to me.

Taylor

One of the most important things I have gotten so far out of my college experience is learning how to moderate my goals. When I was in High School, I always set the most difficult goals. But, once I got to college, I found it was extremely easy to get overwhelmed with everything that goes on on a daily basis. I realize now that I have to accept my weaknesses and my strengths and find a way to work with them in a way that benefits me the most. It is a very grueling process, but now I am starting to understand myself better and realize how far I really can push myself. I believe this makes me a better person now because I know how to use my strengths to my advantage while I find ways to work around my weaknesses. This is a very valuable attribute to have in life and I cannot wait to see what other attributes I will earn from my college experience over the next four years.

Lyle

I've learned many things about myself. lots of areas in my life where i am lacking skills and need improvement. but along with that I have improved in those areas and learned new ways to improve my life. I have also found my passion once more. something I am truly excited to be doing. computer programming. the best thing I have done in my life so far (after getting married and having kids of course). if I could go back in time I would have done it sooner and been more serious about school when I was in highschool. I would have concentrated and studied harder. all of these things I will be doing for the rest of my life anyway. I have Realized that the amount of work I put into school and my life is the amount of satisfaction I get out of it.

Lola

I have gotten out amazing experiences and some friends that i would do anything for from Baylor. I think that no other school would have had the right balance of a great academic program coupled with such friendly and social people all over the campus. This school has taught me valuable lessons, both inside and outside the classroom. I have participated in volunteering activites in many different places around the community that opened my eyes to the desperate need for helpright under our noses. I believe all theses experiences are valuable because they are slowly shaping me into a better person that can go out into Corporate America and create an impact for the better. The life long friendships that I have formed are more valuable than anything that I can think of. I have met people that I know will be there for me no matter what I may be going through. Baylor has truly helped me mature and become a more educated and moral person that can positively change the lives of people that I meet.

Renee

I have gained a great deal of knowledge about myself since attending Baylor. I learned that I have a fondness for challenging courses, that I can be academically inclined and a sports fanatic too, and that I am really confident about my ability to find a job after college. Baylor has proven to be a very successful institution with job placement/graduate school attainment, and its goal to be a Christian university in a not so religious world. I at first thought that I would be overwhelmed by the Christian atmosphere here at Baylor, but BU has proven to be able to balance its religious side with the academic side. Sic'Em Bears!

Attending college is the way to get myself filled with more knowledge and get my goals achived. As I have learned in the past eighteen years, knowledge is the only thing that other people could not be able to take away from you. Sickness might take your health away; bankcrupcy might take your money away; acccidents might take people's life away; however, if you have the knowledge, no one will be able to take it away. College is different than high school. First year of college is also a transmission to me. I'm depend on myself more than on my instructors. I have more free time to balance my study, work and entertainment. It is valuable to attend because college gives me a great opportunity to get more potential out of me.

Joshua

The thing that has been most important about my college experience has not been the education but the character. I've come to view college as a four year character furnace. The trend I've seen is for many people to go on to have lives in fields they never studied for. The people who are successful and happy are not the ones who complete this degree plan or that degree plan. Rather, its those who make the most of their time here to grow and mature. I've learned the importance of diligence, cooperation and how to go above and beyond the "minimal" requirements. In high school I would do what I could to just get by. Now I actively try to succeed. I honestly don't know what the next stage of my life holds but I know that I have developed the personal character to achieve under any circumstances.

Stevie

During my two years at Baylor University I have learned so much both in and out of the classroom. My professors are knowledegable in their field and willing to help any student when needed. Many professors want to get to know you as a person and even will have you over for dinner with their family. This is a valuable aspect for me because I am 25 hours away from my home in Pennsylvania and having people here that care really makes a difference in my life.

Helen

Unforgettable, amazing, and tiring would all describe my three years at Baylor University. I sometimes ask myself why I decided to graduate early and re-think my decision to get into the real world. Staying up all night studying for tests with friends, who distracted me. Having professors who listened about how I didn't know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Living in a city where the community revolved around the university. I wouldn't change my past three years for anything! Baylor, you've completely transformed me. I came in a scared and nervous freshmen, and here I am leaving as an independent who is ready to face life. Although I've received a Bachelor's degree, I've gained so much more.

Hannah

I have gotten a lot out of my experience here. I've grown as a person and i feel prepared to go into the real world. I feel that baylor has prepared me for my career one day and that i will go into my life with confidence. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to be apart of several Baylor tradition while here. The Baylor line, Sing and Pigskin as well as Homecoming. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to attend baylor and would not trade it for the world.

Kory

I enjoyed going to a community college rather then going to a traditional university first. The fact that college is very expensive was a burden for myself and my family. Going to Ocean County College helped my family financially, because my parents were able to pay for my education instead of taking out college loans. Commuting to college also made it easier for me to remain working at a parttime job to save for my 4 year college. I also enjoyed going to a community college because many of the other students who went there with me were from other high schools in the area, so making friends was quit easy. I liked the fact that it was always busy on campus, everyone always had somewhere to be besides class. The teachers/professors also understood that we were going to a community college so we could have jobs at the same time. Working and going to school isn't easy, but I loved the aspect of learning to juggle more then one thing at a time.

Courtney

Since attending Baylor, I have been fully engaged in my awareness of career as a means to fulfill life pupose. This is something that has always been important to me. Outside of Baylor's environment this theory does not seem to make much sense to the world. It feels great to finally be encouraged in this way of thinking. It has straightened out the wrinkles of confusion about what I'm trying to do with my life. I know exactly what I want to do, and why I want to do it. I feel that there are soo many different people and cultures at Baylor that stereotyping based on social expectation is nearly impossible, which makes it more comfortable to focus on what your really there for. My teachers care about my purpose, not just my career choice. Other students at Baylor demonstrate the same sincerity and honor about being there and being focused. Attending Baylor has helped me overcome alot of personal anxieties about life, college, careers, peer influence and unacceptance etc. I have been able to feel the power of knowing your own capablities vs. being crippled by self doubt and anxiety.
