What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Growing up in a foster home was very difficult as a child, but as a high school senior the advice that I would give myself would be to stay focused and work hard in order to become a better person and student.

I would tell my self not to procrastionate. That it is much easier to keep your grades up then to fight to bring them back up. I would also tell my self to save any and all money that you can. It is also hard to work during school specially when you have homework to do just about everynight. When living out of the house you do get the sense of freedom, but you do still have all the responsiblites that your parents helped with by staying on your back to make sure you do not procrastionate.

I would tell myself to put a lot more effort into going to to college instead of just settling for the path of least resistance after high school. It is important to seek out information (financial aid, applications, scholarships, internships, etc.) instead of letting the whole process be mystery. Once well informed, the process isn't all that difficult and a lot less strenuous than you perceive it to be. More effort and trying harder when I was younger could have prevented me from having to discover all this in my mid-twenties. Instead of having to work forty hours per week and fit in 9 - 12 credit hours per semester, I could have a less demanding learning experience filled with more academic pursuits and less employment responsibilities.

I wish that I would have went straight to college. With that being said, I can't look back in regret. Ever since I graduated High School I have been on active duty with the Air Force. There is no greater joy then serving my country. I decided very late that I have more potential to be something great once my kids were born. I wanted to show them that anything is possible. How could I possibly raise them and try to teach them the value of education if I am not educated? I thought long and hard and decided to get back into school. I wish that I would have started sooner before children but this is where I am standing now. The military doesn't cover all of my tuition and none of my books. I am struggling to stay ahead to finish my program but have seriously started to contemplate dropping the program because I just don't have the money to keep up with the cost of my education. After much thought, dropping is just not an option so now I am filing for scholarships. I will finish! Thank you for your consideration. God Bless!

If I could go back in time as a high school senior, I would advise myself to take a college preparatory class or two. I believe in doing so, this could better prepare a student for college classwork. In addition, I feel a high school senior should take an early tour of a few local colleges in order to aclimate his or herself to college life. Finally, setting an organized schedule would have enabled me to finish college on time. A regular schedule would have developed maturity within myself to complete my education within a reasonable time without taking time off.

I would make sure that I understand the process of going to college and preparing for college and I would make sure that I understand the importance of going to college and I would definitely tell myself about being a first time college student to make sure to go through all the orientation and new student classes that are offered from the college. I would say make sure you understand the consequences of dropping classes and what the results really mean when you decide to go back to school, it really is not starting fresh as they say, those dropped credits are held against you. But most of all I would say take college serious and do not wait until you are older to finish go while your mind is young and fresh and get all that you can out of college learn and retain as much as possible. Another important thing is to remember to give back to your community in the form of volunteering, mentoring and maybe even teaching. College life is an awesome experience and every individual should experience it because you meet people from all over the world and different cultures of people.
