What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kelsi

Pick a school based on what fits you best. Make sure you look at size of the school, if it has your major, and especially if you will be surrounded by people who share your values. Find a school that offers oppurtunites based on your interests. By looking at these factors, you will find a school that you feel comforable in, but especially you will make friends like you, and at the same time working towards your major.

Emily

I would advise future students and there parents to look for a college that has a strong program in the area of there interest and a helpful staff. Contact a student of that University and get there opinion of the school, its campus, and where to live. See if the school offers a tour of campus and take a look. Check into the community and see it?s the right fit for you. Once accepted to the desired University, be sure to maximize your experience by first getting to know your roommates and neighbors. You will not only make an abundance of friendships but will also open doors for extraordinary experiences. Then get involved with actives and programs offered by the school, this creates opportunities to get involved in the community and gives you a foot in the door for the future.

Looking for the perfect college is impossible. I honestly do not believe that there is one perfect college out there for you or your student, but I do believe that there are schools that are the best for who you are. To find that school, know what is most important to you (i.e. sports, social life, academics, etc.). Also, know what environment you are most comfortable in. If you love the country, look at schools located away from major cities. To get the very most out of your precious 4 or 5 years of college find activities and classes that fit your personality and intrests. By doing this, you will make friends who is like you, thus giving you the ability to enjoy college even more by having friends who are l much like you. Good luck on your searches and enjoy these years, because after this it?s hard work and real life!

It is very important for parents to make sure your child is truly interested in the university before enrolling. Also, be supportive all the way; college students often play the independent role, but they still need the support of their parents. Student's need to remember that college is about LEARNING, not just having fun. Trust me, once you are a senior and looking at the big wide world, you will wish you had been more serious about your classes. Also, make sure that you are passionate about what you are studying. Even if it requires you to change your major as a senior, it is so important to love what you are learning. When you love your major you 1) attend class, 2) do your homework with enthusiasm, and 3) go beyond what is required and truly own your education. Good luck!

Tasha

I would strongly encourage visiting the campus ahead of time if you have the opportunity to do so. Also, interviewing and asking as many students or former students as you can to get an idea if that school is the right fit for you or your student. GET INVOLVED!! You are not going to make the most of your college experience if you don't take every opportunity you have to interact with other students and serve, compete, play, perform, whatever you like to do. Your college experience will be what you make of it so it is up to you to decide what you want and go for it. There are generally opportunities to do what you want no matter where you go, but some school's place more emphasis on certian activities than others. If there is a certian activitiy that you know you want to specifically pursue while in school than you should may want to go to a school that also emphasizes that. But if your goal is to get involved and explore as many areas of interest and talent as you can than a school like BYU-Idaho would be great for you.

Danielle

Be active in the school activities and make lots of friends. To find the right school however, research the schools and pray about it.

Kal

The advise that I would give is to choose one that you feel save at and that have the same morals as you do. As you do this you will find that those around you at school have the same morals and goals as you have for life in general. To make the most out of your college experiance you need to have fun. Take classes that push you and that help you grow as a person. These will be the classes that will have the biggest impact on your life. Also get to know as many people as you can. You will have the chance to meet many people from all over the country. This will help you in the future as you look for jobs. The best thing to do is put into school what you want to get out of it. It can be a great experiance and one that you will always remember.

First, picking the right college is a very personal decision, the student needs to be involved in the decision more than the parents. Make sure that you pick a college that has a physical setting as well as a social setting that you will be completely comfortable with. Also, don't go somewhere just for those aspects! Looking at the academic credentials of the University is essential. There is absolutely no point in attending a University you will not be able to create a balanced life style in and be able to graduate with your degree on time from. In making the most of your college experience I cannot stress how important it is to Get Involved! Most of the students I've met who have dropped out never did any extracurriculars, got a campus job or got involved with the school in any way other than to attend class. Also, ditching class is like dumping acid all over your grades, its very bad! It doesn't matter if you dont think anything important will be happening that day, you never know what you'll miss! Lastly, make sure you leave some time for fun! Balance your life!

Jennifer

Visit the schools that you are interested in on a normal school day. When you visit the school on a normal school day, you are able to see students in the environment that you will possibly be in one day. You can see what goes on and how other students deal with their workload. Try to sit in on a class. Or talk to students that attend that university. Get the insights on the school, and find what resources are available to the students. Once you find your school, become as involved as you can. Do as much as you can. Don't just do all social activities or all academics. Make sure to work hard, but also to have fun.

Kimberly

The most important thing is to make sure that the college fits YOU. Not your parents, not your friends, but you. I think it is extremely important to visit the campuses you are considering--pay attention to cost, size, atmosphere, educational and extra-curricular opportunities, and other things that are important to you. Then write out the pros and cons and really contemplate your decision--you may even want to pray about it. Once you've made the decision to go, make the most of your experience by becoming involved and juicing as much learning as you can out of your time at college--through both lectures and life experience. Be willing to sacrifice a little bit of fun in order to acheive more lasting learning, but don't be afraid to enjoy yourself and make memories while your there. College is the time to learn to live in the moment. Don't think of college as just a way to prepare for you future--your life is now, so start living it that way!

Rebekah

I would advise parents to allow their child to choose the school they want to attend. It is good and helpful to be involved with a student in choosing the right university, but ultimately, it is the student and not the parent who will be attending and it would not make much sense for parents or students to pay a lot of money to attend a school unhappily. I would advise students to visit the campus of the school they are thinking about attending where possible; it is important for the student to feel at ease with the atmosphere of the campus and housing since that is where they will be spending the bulk of their time. I would advise students to go to school with an open mind, being prepared for personal change---college can be a life changing experience for the better when students are willing to serve and help each other and are willing to work hard to gain knowledge and make new friends. A new student should also be prepared to get out of their comfort zone and try new things! Feel the fear and go for it!

Nathan

Finding the right college is very important. I feel very strongly about finding a college that supports your ethics and moral standards. There are many colleges that are available, but many are becoming known as party schools. The college I attend is a private religious college owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. I also feel it is important to find a college that is safe environment. There have been tragic events on different campuses. I also feel it is important to find a college that has a reputible reputation of having a high job placement. The college should be known as giving quality education. I feel that college is very important and should be something that should be looked into prior to applying. College is a investment, thus should be taken seriously

Brian

Research the colleges that offer the majors that you are the most intersted in.

Stephen

My college choice was very rushed. I had two in mind and one didn't accept me. Do your research and try to visit the campus if possible. This eliminates a lot of the fears that students have their first semester. I for example am from California and am attending school in Idaho. People told me about the cold weather and the small town. Not having experienced either made me nervous. Now that I'm here I really enjoy it and had I visited the campus all of those fears would have disappeared. Once you are in and attending my advice is to try to be diverse. I think that college should be fun, but you can have fun and get awesome grades as well. College often determines a persons future so focus on what will be important to possible employers. Voluteer opportunities are everywhere and provide great leadership experience. Think about the future that you want and work towards it and you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your college experience the rest of your life.

Mary

Make sure you visit the campus beforehand. Talk to people who have already attended the university and see how they felt about it. Don't go to an expensive school thinking it means a better education, its just going to set you back.

Eric

Be prepared. Realize that college life brings many new experiences, some of them are academic and others are social. Be willing to go with the flow but also hold to your standards. Pick a place where you can enjoy your hobbies outside of school because you will need to be able to get away and vent once in a while.

Chase

I would say to parents that the most important thing for your future student is the learning enviornment and quality of the school. If a school is too socially oriented, then the learning can be greatly hindered. Going to college is to prepare for your future career and to have a good internship. Too have those things and a balance with a social life is very important, so find a college that can satisfy both needs for your children.

Lindsay

Finding the right college is difficult. I suggest visiting the campuses and imagining yourself there. If you can see yourself being happy there and living life, then give it a shot. If you begin to wonder if it was the right choice, or you don't smile and laugh like you used too, it might be time to transfer or to keep looking at other schools. To get the most out of college, you have to work hard. You have to be willing to go out there and try new things, to study, to take risks, to follow directions, to make your own choices, to accept the consequences and to laugh and smile at all the mistakes you are guaranteed to make. This is where you find lifetime friends and the memories that will get you through the moments in life when you ask yourself, "Why am I doing this again?" It is important to make those memories and have fun, but it is just as important to make the time to study. And for those that love to study, make time for your friends and for the memories that will make you laugh.

Elizabeth

Before picking a college see if the fields of study and majors that you're interested in are available at the schools you're applying to. Also, pay attention to the life of the students. The activities and interests should be similar to yours because you'll be spending so much of your time there.

Elizabeth

The advice I would give to them is to make sure that you visit the campus to get a feel of the students who go there. Also talk to a few to the professors there so that you can see how they view the school and thier own teaching.

Whitney

You will get a great education almost anywhere you attend, so don't focus too much on that part when choosing a school. Focus more on affordability (this is a HUGE deal, and becomes so much more apparent once you have been there a while.) and other aspects like that.

Trent

I have a few pieces of advice for finding the right college and making the most of the college experience. First of all, choose a college that seems to offer the classes and programs that fit your personal interests and needs. Find schools that offer a wide range of social activities that will keep you active and happy. College isn't easy, so it's nice to have wholesome recreational activities to take your mind off of your schoolwork for a few hours or for the day. It also helps to find a school with a faculty of educators who truly care about the individual student's education and progress. I can't express in words how nice it is to know that your professor actually cares that you understand the material and are able to put what you learn into practice in your life. College is a time of preparation for the rest of your life, so do your research and choose wisely. Don't ever think that it's just a time to party hard. Partying won't prepare you for life's challenges, the quality of your education will. Good luck!

Joe

You need to look at the enviroment mostly. Every student needs an environment that will help them grow not only mentally, but Spiritually and socially as well. Everyone needs to be well rounded, and many Universities/Colleges offer these, you just need to find them.

BRant

look at what courses of cstudy the college offers and then look at what you want to go into. it isn't worth it if you can't enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Sallie

College is one of the best times of you entire life! Find a school that you feel really fits who you are, who you want to be (and/or become), and what you want to do with your life. Once there, really take life by the horns and live it to the very fullest! Remember that learning, gaining knowledge and experience is certainly one of the biggest purposes for being at college, and you should definitely take that seriously, but have fun too! Have a social life! Surround yourself with good people who make you want to be better! Take time to enjoy life and have a good time! This is your biggest chance to become the person you want to be, intellectually, physically, mentally, spiritually. Live this experience with all you have. Be reasonable, and have balance. Go into your college experience wanting to leave a better person all around.

Sean

A school that is selected ought to be cost effective but builds the individual to be a contributing member of society. The school ought to have high standards that reflect the prospective student's willingness to live a life according to those standards.

Rebecca

Finding the right school can be difficult. The institution you enroll in will determine where you spend thousands of dollars, make hundreds of friends, and live for a few years of your life. Talk about big decisions! The best advice I can give about finding the right school is simple: Do your homework. No one is going to find the right place without looking around and seeing what a school has to offer. Look up colleges online. Visit campuses. See what programs are available. Don't be afraid to make phone calls and ask questions. Compare tuition costs. Look for financial aid associated with each institution. Your hard work WILL pay off. It has been said that college is what you make it. I agree 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. If you want to be involved in something, go and be involved! Try new things that you have always wanted to do. Go out on a limb. Make new friends simply because you can. College friends often become your best friends. Learn everything you can and make the most of your learning experience: You're not paying money just to be away from home. Work hard, play hard, and remember why you're there.

Jocelyn

Take your time to do your research and really understand the culture at the different Universitys that you are looking at attending, and then be willing to take a jump in the dark. I came up to school in Idaho from southern California and I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I wouldnt change my college experience for anything. I have learned so much from stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things. My instinct was to stay close to home for school but I know that I have grown up so much by forcing myself to live on my own. Dont be afraid to try something completely different, get involved in student activities its a great way to make friends. Be ready to learn and have fun because thats what the college experience is all about sometimes it just requires you to take that first step into the unknown.

R.

The best way to find the right college is to visit the school. Ask students there what they like and dislike about the school. See if it is the right place for you by experencing it first hand as much as you can.

Sarah

First of all, go on college visits. Tour the campus and meet with an advisor. Use the resouces that are avaiable to you. Get all the information you can to help you with your career path. Most importantly, attend a college where you feel as if you are accepted and feel like you fit in and have interests in common with the other students around you.

Trevor

College is a time to prepare to become a succesfull member of society. This means a lot more than just what you will be doing in the classroom. In college we learn to live independently often under minimal supervision from parents or other authority figures for the first time. We must learn to balance social and academic demands, live on a budget and prioritize on a more grand scale than ever before. Durring this time we also have the opportunity to learn more about our interests and aptitudes, interact with people from diverse backgrounds and gain exposure to the myriad of career opportunities available to us. When choosing a school it is important to look not only at the academic ranking of schools but also at other factors that will influence these, and other, aspects of the complete student experience. Such factors could include the extra curricular activities avaiblable and the culture of the campus and surrounding community. If possible, speak with current and former students to see what they valued in their educational experience and make a list of your own priorities. Then gather information from several sources to find a school that best matches your expectations.

Rachelle

Once you make a decision about what college is best for you don't keep questioning your decision. Try to enjoy your experience wherever you go. If you make a good solid effort to have a good experience, then either you will or you will know that you should find somewhere else to go. The thing that makes the most difference in your college experience is your attitude, both towards your classes (you are there to learn after all) and towards the people and activities you are involved with. Don't let others alter your standards, be strong and be yourself and have fun.

Tiahna

Chosing a university is a daunting task. We all hope that the school we chose will be where we futher our education, learn, and gain knowledge and a degree that will stay with us forever. It will aide in finding a job that we could support ourselves and possibly a family. That's an enormous amount of responsability to put on the shoulders of an eighteen year-old kid! Here is a little advice I wish I had when I was making the decision. Choose a school that has a wide variety of majors if you do not yet know your desired field of study. Choose a school that fits other needs, such as social aspects. If you are a social butterfly, go somewhere that has extracurriculars, or an intermural sports program. Studying is important, but it adds stress that can be released durung physical activity, or relaxation. Lastly, once you have picked your school, have a good attitude and make it great. Every school has its pro's and con's, but its your attitude that will determine how well you do academically, as well as socially. Trust your own judgment, and make the experience amazing! Best of luck!

Lindsay

Be sure you are ready for college. When I came here I did horribly my first semester. I wasn't ready to take this on, and was so excited for the freedom college brought that I just did what I wanted, no what I needed. Maybe start out at a community college for a semester if you aren't sure. Also, visit the college. I got lucky, and even though I never visited Rexburg before I came here I love it, but I know that usually that isn't the case. Make sure the school you are going to attend has the same values as you. If you like the more liberal, maybe somewhere in WA, if you like more conservative somewhere in ID or UT. To make the most of your college experience you need to get organized, figure out your prioprites and no matter what fun activity comes up you need to stick to them. You need to attend you classes, and study something that is interesting to you, not that will just make you a lot of money. You need to want to learn, and you need to be excited about it.

My advice for those individuals would be to find a University who's mission statement is all for striving for excellence and in building a stronger people. You want to find a University where the diversity is such where you feel comfortable no matter what situation you are in. You want to feel welcomed in any class and in any room. You want to be able to succeed and have a strong focus towards it. You want to be at a place that offers so many services to helping each of us succeed. It's important to attend a University that sets a higher standard so that we may have a higher quality of education. When looking for a University it's also important to find one that offers for your interests. Here at Brigham Young Univeristy-Idaho, there are so many diverse activities and majors offered for all. The spirit here is stronger and unified. We as students and faculty work together every day to help fulfill this school's mission statement in unity and togetherness, as well as, success. Make the most of your experience by attending a University that has promised they can and will help you.

Elizabeth

Don't forget to do your homework and understand what requirements the school will have for your.

Kjerstin

College is just life on a smaller scale: You get what you bring to it. Be curious, be open to opportunities, find people who uplift you and hang around with them, know your long-term goals and look to them often, and smile a lot. It's simple advice, but then, who among us has the time to get more complicated? This is college, people, and time is at a premium! College is only a few short years in what I hope will be a very long life, so enjoy it. Don't risk regrets: get out there and experience the experience.

Mikala

Take your time, look hard and realize that college isn't for everyone right out of High school. I have loved colelge and would never trade the time i have been given there for anything.

William

Find a place that has a good program in your field of study and agrees with your values and standards, and doesn't drain the pocketbook.

Jessica

Apply to every school you want to and sometimes what seems like a school you would never choose ends up being the school you go to! Have lots of fun and go out and try things that you would never have thought of doing before, like jumping off of a bridge, meet lots of new people and be nice to them all. Always call home and let your parents know how you are doing but enjoy the freedom and responsibility that college life offers.

Emily

Picking a college can be stressfull and demanding; you want the school that will offer you the most options and a school that you can grow and develop into the person you're supposed to become. But how can you pick the right school? How do you know which school will exceed your expectations? In my personal experience in picking college and dealing with most decisions, you just have to make a choice, then make the most of it. There's going to be bad and good days no matter where you go; you have to be prepared for that, and prepared to make the most out of everything that comes your way. Be involved in activites, be ready for new experiences and be bold. Go out, have fun and become the person you're meant to become!

Kimberly

Research more than one school and make a list of pros and cons for each school to see which works best for you or your child. If you don't like the school you are at don't be scared to transfer because there are many good schools out there.

Richard

Find a college that has the programs you are interested in, it also helps to pick one with a great assortment of options in case you want to change your major. Don't limit your options! Pick the college that will help you achieve what you want the most!

Nicole

Just listen to your heart and weigh all of your options!

Brittany

I have three words to share with you. Everyone is different. Also, every college is different. Therefore the best advice I can give to prospective students is to find what's best for you. For some people living close to home is nice, both financially and supportively. For others, the main objective might be to get as far away from home as possible. Finding the right college has many factors. Other factors to incorporate include expense, climate, programs offered, and envronment. Study it out. Finding a college is like shopping. Make sure you know what you are looking for, and don't make a decision too quick. Think it out. Compare and contrast. Develop a list of pro's and con's. This will aid in this big decision. Let your parents help, because believe it or not, they do have some wisdom. Then my final words of advice. Pick a college, and put your whole self into that decision. Love where you are and what you want to become. Follow your dream.

Adam

Go to college to get an education! Not to "have a good time." So many people go to the "party schools" and they're really missing the whole point of college! Seriously, are you paying Several thousand dollars to get drunk every weekend and fail all of your classes because of your choice of lifestyle? And then be a college grad working in McDonald's because you didn't learn anything? Can you say "wasted time and money?" And "wasted life?" Not worth it.

Elizabeth

My very best advice is to see and feel the campus. Know what it is that you want from a school, but go see the school instead of just taking someone else's word. I always thought I would go somewhere different than I chose to go, but after visiting both campuses, I knew which one I would be happiest at. I love my school and would never change a single decision I made that brought me here.

Brooke

To those parents/students out there who are searching for the right college to go to I would say choose wisely. There are many school out there that provide a wonderful education but on the side are big party schools, or have bad reputations. College is preparing you for the rest of your life. Take the time to find that perfect college, the one where you'r going to get a great education have tons of fun and meet many new life long friends. Don't choose a college because their party reputations, that will only have a disadvantage on your school work. Find that perfect school thats right for you somewhere your going to have the time of your life doing something good and making new friends while getting the education that will help you with your future.

Elsa

The best advice would be to really do your research and decide what your goals are along with your son or daughter. Be really open, discuss the benefits of going to college with them. Encourage them to get involved and make lots of friends from all different backgrounds so that they can better understand the world. Help them to figure out a way to pay for college, it can be really expensive, there can be expensives that you don't always think of . Write a list of of what expensives you think there will be. Have your son or daughter write a list and then compare, you will both have different items listed. Help them, with a buget to understand and respect money. Find out what their long term goals are, which colleges will offer the best education for the area that they are going to be majoring in. Let them know it's okay to change their minds when trying to decide what to do for the rest of their lives, that it's normal to change their major at least twice. Be very supportive with them and realize their dreams don't always match yours.
