What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

jose

If I had the ability to go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to be prepared. First of all focus on school absorb in all the learning because its the last of the easy part. I'd tell myself to not stay behind to focus on whats important for my future like all the college paper work and everything. another thing i would let myself know is that its not easy and dnt expect your friends to be there for you because they are going to be going through their own thing as well. Last but not least I would tell myself that its not easy and good luck. That is what I would tell myself.

Amanda

I would tell myself to follow my own heart. I was set on going away to college, but I let my parents and family talk me into staying home the first year. I lost a 10,000 dollar scholarship because of it that I can't get back because it was for incoming freshmen only and now im considered a transfer student and they dont give any scholarships to first year transfer students. I should have worried about my own happiness instead of the happiness of others. I lived my life to make other people than myself happy and it's the one choice I made in my life that I will always regret.

Jacob

If i could go back and talk to myself as a senior, I would tell him to apply to every scholorship and grant possible. College is very expensive and it will be very benifitual in the future after a few awards. I would also tell my senior-self that to make sure all documents are sent as early as possible and do not procrastinate because it just wastes more time in the long run and creates stress. However, the most important thing I would tell myself is not to worry and relax. Worrying throught senior year about college caused a great deal of stress and by simply taking the time for myself once a week to lay down in a field somewhere. It would have made my senior year much more enjoyable and the transition to college much more smooth.

If I could go back to talk to myself in High School, I would tell myself the value and necessity of a college education and tell myself not to put off enrolling in college. Back then, I was convinced that to be successful did not require a college degree. Both of my parents didn't have a college education, and my father is a small business owner who is very successful. I saw my dad's success, and decided to enter the workforce directly after High School instead of choosing a college like so many of my other high school friends. Slowly, it became apparent that a college education was extremely important. I became a Pharmacy Technician and worked with Pharmacists with their doctorate degrees and highly respected jobs. They inspired me to go back to school, and after a couple of years of taking a few community college classes here and there I decided to go back to school full time to complete an actual degree. If I had started this directly out of High School, college would have gone a lot faster and it would have been a lot easier financially, without the debt resulting by working first.

These next four years are not all about you. They are not going to be the greatest years of just your life, but also your family’s life, your boyfriend or girlfriend’s life, and your friends’ lives. You should not embark on this exciting journey on your own, but rather with the guidance and support of those who are close to you. This is not the time for you to forget about and abandon your family and your roots, but to wholeheartedly realize how important they are and appreciate how much they have helped you succeed in your life. In college, you should focus on creating and developing your own sense of identity and discovering the path that is right for you, however do not go about this alone. At times it will be difficult, and you will be tempted to stray from the path you’ve chosen. It will be your family and genuine friends who will be there to guide you every step of the way. Graduation should not only be your celebration of success, but your family’s as well because they should be just as much an integral part of your college experience as you.

Celeste

I would make sure to tell myself to start getting into a studying routine. I would also tell myself to do more volunteer work in the field that im intrested in. I would also tell myself to lay off the carbs becasue i would gain fifteen pounds future.

Gil

Meet with professor during their office hours, as well as email professors for any clarification or questions. Studying for an hour, and taking a fifteen minute break, then resume studying. Asking friends whether they have any textbooks for sale. Using Ratemyprofessor.com to find my professors. Utlizing the resources around the campus, such the free scantron provided within the student centers.

David

If I could travel back in time and speak to myself in high school, I would emphasize the need to decide upon a field of study that I enjoy; and that when I do, I will have taken an important step toward the rest of my life. I would caution myself against waiting too long to make this decision, lest it be made by others less concerned about my future happiness. I might explain that making no decision is equivalent to deciding to do nothing, which is the best way to prevent anyone from achieving their full potential. My foolish younger self would be admonished not to travel along a path of indecisiveness, but to fully embrace the unknown. He would be told that the excitement of learning in a field that interests him is much more important than future earnings potential. I would explain that the best way to achieve financial stability is to become educated in things that stimulate his mind and emotions. It is not so important that he decide upon a degree that will make him rich, but one that will enrich his life and the lives of those around him.

If I could go back in time and address myself as a high school student entering college, I would have placed more emphasis on school. At the time I was working full time in order to pay for college without student loans. Because of this, I slacked on my homework in the first quarter and started my college career with 2 Cs! Yikes! Since then , I have learned the balance between school, work, and service. This would have been useful knowledge in the beginning. Another thing that would have been encouraging as a student entering high school would have been to be reassured. I was worried about the transition and placed extra stress on myself. I learned quickly that college classes were not very different from high school classes and I had been well prepared by my high school teachers for the studying, note taking, and critical thinking required. I also would have told myself to buy used books!

Katelin

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself that sometimes life gets so difficult that it just feels like it is impossible to move forward and that we can get trapped in the pits of hopelessness because we feel as if we have no control in these situations. It is during these times, however, that it is most important to remember to reach out for support, take a deep breath, and take a small step forward when you can. Gloomy days do not stay that way forever. At some point, the clouds will part and the sun will shine again. Until then, sometimes it is all you can do to keep breathing.

All the things you hear about going to college are true. No one cares if you are in class or not, if you've studied or done your homework. However if you don't it is not your instructor who suffers it is YOU! So are you truly serious about your education? Because you have to have more than just an idea that you want to go to college. You have to have a plan to get past the obstacles you will run into. You also have to realize what kind of person you are. Do you sometimes get in your own way? Are you the kind of students who puts things off and waits until the last minute? Bad habits will sabotage your efforts. Realize all of these things and think about them, plan for them, deal with them. The best way to get through college and meet your goal is to realize how you are going to get there. Take each class seriously, take your education seriously and you will succeed.

Michael

Plane for the future, take the necessary steps in preparing your financial needs for college, research in what you would love to do, and never give up on your goals or dreams.

sulmy

If I could back in time I would tell myself to take school much more seriously and learn everything that I can. Also to research careers more so that I would have known what i wanted to do sooner and than I did. Also that high school is the easiest schooling ever and that if you don't learn the fundamentals you will always be behind.

Roman

What I got out of the college experience so far has been great. I live on campus and I am learning about taking responsibility for what I do and how to live on my own. I have had good instructors so far and they all taught me a little something about life. I learned that if I do not do my homework I would not be able to make it up like high school. Also, I learned that if I miss a class, I have to face the consequences of my actions and catch up to the class on my own. The most important thing i learn is that I must work hard to get what I want in life and college is a test to see if you are strong enough to push yourself to get what you want.

James

The cost is excellent and the education is good. The job afterward is awesome.

Kristie

College does not make you a better person than someone who has not attended, but it does make you a better-rounded person. College exposes you to new ideas, other people’s viewpoints, engaging debates, and challenges your ignorance. I believe that the time I have spend in school has let me be more willing to empathize, understand, and accept other people and their ideas. I have learned that I will never stop learning.

Folashade

I got a lot from my college experience. I had the opportunity to learn and develop skills in my area of study. Including my academic achievements, I also learnt resilience, endurance, hard work and the joy of success. I learnt about trial and error. The value in me attending college is that I can rise above the $2000 a month wage, I have skills and even passions I never knew I had. Now I am ready and equip to compete in my industry of interest. In all, my college experience has been the most fulfilled part of my life. It is an experience that I can say brought the real me out. I was able to prove to myself my inherent abilities.

Amanda

At 14, I was diagnosed with a terminal illness. High school was difficult. I was hardly there and my friends had a hard time dealing with the reality of my illness. I became extremely isolated. My mom told my that college would be so much better. When I got to college, I had a hard time connecting with people because I was scared. I was convinced to join a sorority and it changed my life. I found people who could separate me from my illness. College has been the best experience I have ever had. I am maintaining a 3.2 GPA and have found a group of friends who feel like the sisters I had never had. I was able to find myself and able to handle the reality of my illness better. I am now the healthiest I have been. I am able to make it to every class and have a group of friends that have kept me from ever falling back into depression. If it were not for college I am not sure I would still be around.

Cherish

Going into college, I was excited to be buckled down with work and to work so hard that I would drive myself crazy. I just finished my first quarter and found a situation that was entirely different than what I had imagined. I have learned so more about the world, not just in biology, but about different cultures that I see every single day. I have become so much more aware of injustices that happen every day, but not in a way that makes me despair. I have learned that I am able to combat stereotypes and injustices if I keep an open mind and stand up for causes that require me to stand; I've found my own human weaknesses; I have learned that I have become a more passionate person. College has never been about ladeling me with work, but it has been about giving me insight into the world of men and my everyday culture and seeding me with all of the steps that I need to be a functioning person capable of using my intellect to foster tolerance and activism. It has been ten weeks and my life has already been changed, my mind reawakened.

Kristin

College has been a great experience overall. I have furthered my education, been involved in several extra-curricular activities and have met some of the most extraordinary people. One program has led to another and now I am working on my doctorate in an area I am passionate about. The world continues to change and the job market has become more competitive than ever. Through college, I have found jobs that pay well in areas that I enjoy and feel rewarded by going to. College has led me to more than just a paycheck, it has helped me to become who I was meant to be.

Monique

My college experience so far has been a great experience and I would recommend college to anyone because in the beginning it may not seem worth it but in the end it will all pay off. College is no easy place and it is a learning experience everyday but the many oppertunities, you gain from college are worth the adventure. College has offered me an oppertunity to earn my degree in the career field of my choice. It has also taught me to be more responsible when it comes to school because its not like high school to where you have 6 months to complete 6 classes; this is a fast pace environment and takes alot of effort. The classroom enviroment in college is amazing, you meet new people everyday and they can help you along they way in your college days and they can help you with your future.

Bryanna

I have learned so much so far here at my school. I have had lots of fun and met some very interesting people. There are so many helpful resources here and I love coming here everyday.

Liliana

I have been accepted to the licensed vocational nursing program at Panola College, this means alot to me because I will be the first person in my family to graduate college. College has taught me responsibility, and that with hard work and determination you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

Krystal-Jade

The things that I have gotten out of my college expereince were be a goal getter, look out for number one, be positive, and always look for ways to better yourself. First of all I learned that a person needs to be a goal getter in order to attend and successfully graduate. Meaning, if I wanted something as small as a front seat or as big as a "A" in the class, I had to work for it which made me appreciate my success all the more. This connects with looking out for number one which is me because no one was concerned for my needs, wants, or pressing issues which made me my own advocate. Even though I had to always look out for my goals and achievements, I had to be positive. For instance, if I got an unwanted grade I had work harder next time and not get down. All in all I learned to always better myself which helped me reach limits I never thought were possible. Therefore, my college experience was challenging but worthwhille because of the opportuntity to grow up and be my own person.

Chelsea

Out of my college experience so far I have gotten to know who I am as a person. In highschool I was not always the start of the class. A lot of the time I stayed quiet and got all my work done. However, once I started college it change how I look at other people around me. I am more outgoing and are willing to stand out in the crowed, something that I was never able to do before. I have made life long friends that I hope will stay by my side forever, I know I will be by theirs. I have learned what I want to do with my life and how I want to keep my life running in the future, around me and those close.

Attending community college at Mt. Hood Community College has been an amazing experience, preparing me for my tansfer to Western Oregon University with an Associace of Arts so that I can pursue a degree in Information Systems. Last Spring I was selected to be the Public Relations officer for the MHCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International honor society, which has been an amazing and valuable experience, and has allowed me be involved with both my college and community. Being in such a position has given me a great amount of motivation to do more both in my scholarly and and leadership activities, as last year I wasn not involved in anything, and really only went to school. It is a great feeling to me to be able to be a part of something and make a difference, and I have really enjoyed my time at Mt. Hood Community College and with Phi Theta Kappa.

Thomas

My experience at the community college I am currently attending has really helped with the expected transition to a university. It has given my great experience it the advanced courses that come with college, adequately giving me the needed study skills. Not to mention the reduced costs of attendence really helps out because I am paying for school with no parental assistance.

Elissa

I have learned so much since I have started college. I have gained new friendships, greater wisdom and knowledge. I have learned to be independant and to work hard. Without getting a college eduaction, I would not be successful in life and my endeavors.

jairo

I always attended the community college i went to everyday and i will proceed this in san jose state. college experince has gotten me to better understand forever my surroundings for the best. Thank you for yout time.

Jamie

I would not change my college experience for anything in the world. Through this experience I have found the man I intend to marry, many life-long friends, met wonderful teachers, discovered my passion in life, and when I graduate and start my career, I will be able to help out my family financially. I don't think I could have done as well at a different school. CSU San Bernardino just seemed to be the perfect fit for me and I am very glad I had this opportunity, an opportunity my mother and my siblings were not able to have.

Katie

My undergraduate degree is a bachelor's degree in nursing, and when I first started my nursing program in 2005 I had no idea what a nurse was. Three years after graduating, I'm very proud to call myself a registered nurse. Going to college and attending the school of nurse opened my eyes up to how special a profession in health care can be. Nurses are no longer just the hand-maidens to the physicians; Nurses are critical thinkers who often lead the patient's health care team with their impressive communication, collaboration and advocate skills. My college experience was valuable to me because without my degree in nursing I probably would not have been introduced to such a wonderful patient population like our war and combat veterans. Being a nurse for the Department of Veterans' Affairs enables me to dedicate my time and skills to these courageous men and women and say a huge "thank you" to them for their service and their sacrifice.

Coming from a bi-cultural background my education as a sociology major helped me understand and analyze a lot of experiences I had growing up as I interacted with different cultures. It helped me grow as a person, and continues to help me as a parent of three multi-cultural children since my wife comes from a different ethnicity than me. Even though times have changed and acceptance of multi-cultural relationships has increased, there are still times that my wife and I find ourselves explaining to the kids why we sometimes get the reactions we do from the community around us when we run errands or go out to eat at restaurants.

I am not starting my Freshman year until Sprng of 2011.

What I have gotten out of my college experience is self confidence, knowledge, passion, and maturity. College has boost my self confidence. Before, I thought very low of myself. I went through bouts of depression and even suicidal thoughts. But now, I know that there are lots of things I can do. That I am smart and I do have a future. From college I have gained knowledge. I know more math than my parents! For me that is an accomplishment. Also, I now have a passion for my future. I know what I want to do with my life and that is to help others! Before going to college, I was just wandering aimlessly around not knowing what I wanted to do with my life and to be honest I didn't care. I didn't care about going to college nor anything else. All I was concerned about was me and my happieness. But oh, how that has changed! Which brings me to my last point, maturity. I had a lot of growing up to do and college has helped with that. I have learned that it's not about me. Life is so much more than that!

California State University San Bernardino has offered so many opportunities for me. They supplied me with great professors, peers, and social networking. I've really excelled at this University and I would recommend any Southern California resident to apply here, not just because it's local and cheaper than other Cal States but because it's a really great learning environment and everybody here seems to have gained so much from attending this school. I know I've gained alot by being involved on campus and Cal State San Bernardino has so many social opportunites. From Fraternities and Sororities to sports and clubs. Being a member of Alpha Phi has opened so many doors for me and I've had the best college experience so far out of it. My networking skills are now where they should be and after holding the position of Director of Publicity I now carry experience for my career in PR. Along with networking Cal State San Bernardino has an organization called PRSSA which is a PR organization that helps PR majors get their careers started. All I can say is that I'm proud to be a Yote :)

When I first started attending Brigham Young University I was plagued with something that I like to call now "intellectual laziness". I will explain what this unfortunate aliment is. While in High School I enrolled strictly in the Honors and AP classes when possible. In total I took 7 AP classes scoring between 3 and 5. I was also rewarded Valedictorian. However, I hadn't really applied myself in any of that. An ability to understand quickly and good test taking skills do that. In college it was much of the same situation. I went to my classes and passed my tests easily enough without stretching myself. For that my GPA at college is 3.62. Though in September of 2008 I left college and served a 2 year mission for my church which changed many things. During this mission I learned the importance of hard work. Another useful thing I learned was how to talk to people and also speaking Spanish. When I return to BYU I will use my new found skills or applying myself fulfilling in creating a new college experience then what I had my first few semesters. My schooling allowed me to see intellectual laziness.

Nicole

College was always a goal of mine. Graduating was a great accomplishment since I was the first in my family to do so. I first attended Chaffey Community College. With the help of guidance counselors I transfered to CSUSB where I recieved my B.A. in Psychology. The most I have gotten out of my college experience is an open mind. Before college I had very conservative beliefs and I was very judgemental of people of different ethnicity and sexual orientation. Throughout my college years, I began to research and find out first hand how diversity is not such a bad thing. I found who I truely was and started to think for myself. For once I was not just following what my parents believed. College was the time I spent discovering and learning about different ideas, opinions, and beliefs. It has been such a value to attend because I was given the opportunity to view different sides of topics and decide for myself, which was something I would have never thought about before I pursued a college education. Since graduating from CSUSB, I have learned to conduct research, write APA papers, research theories and most importantly, think for myself.

Ashley

I have met so many new people and gotten a better understanding of the type of person I would like to be in the future. College has helped me become more independent and responsible.

Rebecca

The number one value that I have received out of my college experience is a love for learning. In order to succeed in life you must be able to except that there will never be a time in your life where you are incable of learning something new. With a love for learning an individual is capable of working well with others and respecting the fact that there is no one right answer to any problem. There are times in each individuals lives when a struggle or conflict creates great difficulty, however my college experience has allowed for the realization that with every conflict I overcome, a new learning experience can emerge. In the end my love for learning has created a passion for my career path, a goal to complete, and a purpose for my life.

Alyssa

Going into my third year of college, I've asked myself that very question. My anwser isn't a simple one nor a complicated one, rather it finds itself somehwere inbetween. Thus far, my college experience has been traditional, we'll say. Traditional in that I've maintained a reasonable GPA, attend events, and partake in clubs/groups. Having gone Greek was one of the best choices I've made since in college. By being Greek I've opened a pandoras box of opportunities. Opportunities to flourish academicly, participate in campus wide events, Raise money for a number of different philanthropies, influence the commuinty through volunteer work, create life long connections, and to discover myself. I find my attendance in college very important for the success of my future. The value of a higher education lies in the knowledge that I gain, the degree to my name, and the confidence that comes when applying for a Job. Confidence in that I have an advantage over someone who dosen't have a degree. The value also finds itself in the salary I'll soon to make, the life I'll soon lead, and the family I'll soon raise.

Marc

The greatest gift I received from my college experience was the "gift of opportunity!" Pursuing my higher education allowed me "opportunities" to become a teacher and then a school administrator. Additionally, my college education provided me the background knowledge of pursuing other career paths had my first choice of education not worked out. As I work with young grade school students today -- especially, our 5th graders -- I often try to encourage them to embrace their educational opportunities; so that, they have "choices" in the future. My college education has been so valuable in retaining a career in education, and now working as an administrator to support and encourage our youth.

Melissa

I've met new people and learned more about myself in the process.

Heidi

I have made some great friends at CSUSB. The Criminal Justice department is wonderful! There are ample opportunities to excell in academic work, the professors, for the most part, really seem to care and are willing to help students succeed. I have and will continue to learn a great deal at this school! Knowledge I acquire here will be extremely useful in my future career as a Paralegal. This campus is a little ray of sunshine in the middle of a city that has "questionable" qualities.

Beth

My college experience has not only given me an excellent education, but it has opened my mind to other views and made me more aware of the world around me. It has given me an opportunity to mature and to be independent. Also, I have learned different skills such as time management and to gain a hard work ethic. I also have learned to not take things for granted and learn how to live in the "real world" on my own. Going to college has helped me develop values and skills that will help me for the rest of my life, be it in my future career or relationships with others.

Cassandra

Since going to college I have been able to meet a variety of people that go to college. It has been nice to be able to talk to some of the people in my classes because they all have different backgrounds. I have been able to get a lot of valuable and helpful information on the major that I am going for. While attending the community college and taking classes that are specifically for my major, I was able to talk to people that are going for the same major that I am going for. Even some of my teachers were helpful because they work in that field. In being their student I was able to find out what I need to do in order to pursue my career. When I started college, I didn't know what I was getting into or what I was supposed to do after to get into my career field. But since I have attended I know now what I need to do in order to be on the right track to reaching the job that I want to do.

Malinda

I have learned a lot that has helped me to grow in ways that I did not realize education could do. It has been a valuble to attend because there has been theories and techniques used in class or homework that I can use in my personal life.

jacqueline

mainly what i have gotten out of my first year in college is what it is meant to work and study. i have taken such difficult courses my first year, and however i managed to survive and get good grades. college has showed to ask for help when you need it, that theres always someone willing to help, and that essentially to study and work. never did i ever imagine that college would introduce to me a variety of different people, each who over time i have learned greatly off. college truely has been the greatest time in my life, for attending college gets me closer to accomplishing my dream.

Haley

In my college experience I have learned the value of time management. This is so important in getting through college. Without this, it is very easy to become unorganized and get lost in social events. It is greatly important to find the balance between the two. College is very valuable to attend because various life lessons will and have been learned. Everyone makes mistakes in life and college is certaintly the place to take the lessons learned and apply them so one can move forward and make right decisions.

Victoria

Moving away from home was the smartest college decision I made. All my friends say they wish they had moved away and are basically miserable staying home. Moving away has allowed me to meet new and different people and has opened my eyes to more oppurtunities. I have a lot more freedom being away from home and being in college. I am allowed to go out and experience different things and go to different places. Going to college will allow me to achieve my goals in becoming what I want to be. Meeting these new people will allow me to communicate with them and they might open my eyes to other oppurtunites with their ideas.

Thomas

Going into college I was planning on becoming a police officer. I sang in the choir for fun. The choir director began to really push me toward switching my major to music. Contemplating the matter I thought about how much music has affected my life so I talked to my parents about it. They too thought that it was a good idea because they had always seen the joy I got out of singing. So after my first semester at SCC I changed my major to music but I didn?t know what musical profession I wanted to go into. I began to think about all the teachers that had helped me in my childhood and I started edging toward education. But the person that really made me make up my mind was my college choir director. I would not be anywhere without him, he is one of the greatest guys I know, and he is one of the best directors I've sung under. If I become half the director he is, then I know that I would have completed my educational goals. So you see; I've gotten the rest of my life from going to college!
