College of Charleston Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Matthew

For the most part.

Emmerson

not everyone

Jordan

Some people do wear preppy clothes but for the most part students wear clothes that are in style. It is a party school! I have friends from all over the country. Some from Maryland, Washington, Ohio, and more. The variety of people is great.

Torry

No. Both schools are excellent, both have a good student body. Although, CofC does have more females and Citadel has more males, both schools have a good, representative student body.

Emily

Sort of, but in all the good ways! I had an incredibly fun time at CofC but there are so many other things to do besides party; it's a very active campus. The students are a lot of fun and do tend to have a relaxed, laid back vibe.

Jennifer

To me, it doesn't seem any different than any other college campus.

emily

laid back, yes. like to have a good time, yes. however, i dont know a whole lot of people with stds.

Alex

YES

Alex

CofC does have a lot of Greek societies and there are plenty of parties if you WANT to party. However, I personally am not into the whole party scene; I have a blast with my friends without partying every night. There is so much to do in Charleston that it is easy to find something fun every night that you have free, whether parties are involved or not. As far as the academic realm goes, I'd say that CofC has just as rigorous a program as other public colleges in the state, especially if you are in the Honors program. The Honors College has astonishing acceptance rates for its graduates into medical/dental school and other graduate programs.

Mallory

for the most part.

Devin

For about half of the campus

Chelsea

Well yeah there were a lot of liberal people here, which was sort of a wake up call when I stayed at the dorms Freshman year, although I've lived here all my life. But, I think that was a good thing- opened my eyes to a lot of stuff. You don't need to be in a sorority to fit in here- none of my friends have been in sororities- it is not the be -all- end all to being social here.

Heather

The students at C of C definitely know how to party but I don't think it is anymore of a "party school" than any other college... Its just college. While some students dress "preppy" it isn't unusual to wear sweats to class. I like that there is usually someone more overdressed than me and someone more underdressed for class.

Aaron

In a way, most of the guys here all dress the same preppy way; s.perry boat shoes, short shorts, pink collared shirt, coast sunglasses, and most importantly "croakies" (the string that connects to sunglasses around your neck). There are a lot of good looking girls but the ratio to guys is probably close to even.

Dylan

somewhat

Jessi

Somewhat, it's really hard to have an accurate stereotype when almost 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the school is all female.

Nick

Somewhat, but only in a small number. Many people here are not like that at all

angelea

somewhat. I mean once you get to know people, the stereotypes aren't really all that accurate. But if you take the student body for just how they look and dress, then yea this stereotype is very accurate.

Elizabeth

Not in the slightest. CofC is the Harvard of the South, with an encouraging faculty, stimulating environment and social atmosphere.

Alex

Based upon my experience so far, that is completely incorrect.

Megan

Sort of. It is a great place to kick back and have a good time, however, it is also an amazing college academically.

Mallory

There are lots of girls but the boys are there I promise :) And as for the "preppy" scene it's there but like any college there is lots of diversity from that angle. I have enjoyed watching the basketball team since I came here.

Brett

Sort of. CofC is big into working hard and playing hard. There are Fraternities and Sororities, however, these are not the only groups to be involved in. There are a good number of music and theatre groups as well.

Taylor

very, on both accounts

Ash

No, most of the people here are very driven. Students do not come here just to party. Students come here to either get great jobs or get into great graduate schools. We study here.

Alex

these stereotypes are not totally accurate. I mean there are rich kids, but thier cool. There will always be stuck up and rude people anywhere you go. Not every student at C of C is druggie! College of Charleston is a party school. There are clubs on every street!

Lauren

There are alot of parties and fun things to do, but the school work is not easy. I have known several tranfer students from Universty of South Carolina who say Charleston is much harder.

Michelle

eh, for the most part, but you'll always have your exceptions

Lauren

No absolutely not. Everyone here is fairly liberal, but it is even across the board. Anyone can find their place here, and if they don't, they did not look hard enough. People here are friendly, understanding, and happy... I believe it is all of the sunshine.

Stephanie

Most of the time, yes

Jen

yep!

Laura

well, lots of kids drink and SOME are alcoholic but not all. There's all kinds of things to do besides party, partying is just more fun sometimes. Not all freshman flunk out, only the ones who party way too much or cut too much class because it's a nice day out and the beach is only like 15 minutes away

Elana

Well just like any College there are big drinkers. College of Charleston is great because it is in a small city so there are other things to do than just drink.

Matthew

There actually are a surprising amount of attractive girls, however it seems many are not very individualistic and seem to wear a standard college girl "uniform" That said, charleston is a pretty up and coming city with a huge potential for originality and creativity.

Lucy

Yes.

Ann-Marie

no

Amy

No! Its not just a party school. I mean, there's definitely a good bit of partying that goes on, but we DO study a whole lot too, and most people definitely study more than they party. The ones that don't are the ones that don't graduate.

Katie

I think the student body is incredibly diverse. we are a bit of a party school, and we do have surfers, but we also have a lot of activism, academic groups, and religious group. Stereotypes exist for a reason, many are true, but not compeletely.

Alyson

they are not always accurate but in some cases are true

Melissa

Not necessarily. I think the school is a lot harder than people think it is. While CofC students do know how to have a good time, most people I know are pretty good students as well.

Michelle

Yes, these types of people are definately on campus, there are really a lot of artsy people, but there are so many other types of people here too. I feel like anyone can come to CofC and find a place to fit in

Leila

a lot of the students are blond sorority girls, i'd even say the majority. but there are a lot of different kinds of people, you just need to search for them.

Alissa

I don't believe that C of C is all that easy to get into, because I got deferred at first. I am a very dedicated student, and for me to get deferred at my first attempt into C of C, I think says a lot, at least for me! As for the hippie stereotype, I think we have a lot of "free" students.

Grace

I think there are some truths in all stereotypes, but CofC students are not the only college students with this reputation. These kinds of people exist everywhere.

Melanie

No, they aren't accurate, of course we party, but just as much as all other colleges, so that stereotype shouldn't be taken into account when someone is deciding whether or not to come here.

Paige

sometimes

Lauren

Not particularly. I haven't noticed a whole lot of partying but I'm not exactly the party type. We do have our fair share of "hippies" but we are a liberal arts school. And while some students aren't the brightest, we have many students who are very intelligent.

Emily

all stereotypes are accurate to a degree, otherwise they wouldn't exist.

Casey

Somewhat, but not a big percentage. Overall the students are really varied.

Allison

yes
