Colorado College Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Alison

I'd say these are quite accurate. However, there are plenty of exceptions to it all. CC is such a diverse place that no one stereotype can be said to be completely true or false. With the anything-goes attitude comes a very accepting student body, open to almost anything. As for the liberal thing, the student body is probably 5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} conservative but it's because kids here don't accept the status quo, they are always thinking, testing limits, questioning things.

Blair

We are NOT all hippies! I'm not and none of my friends are. The hippies at this school vary from well-dressed Green Peace advocates (she's in my sorority) to neon-wearing slack-lining hippies. I like to look presentable and lots of people here do. We're not all hippies! I'm not! But yeah, we're obsessed with the block plan. You have to be to come and stay here. We work really hard for those 3.5 weeks and then get to party or travel on block breaks (thats not saying that we don't party or travel during the block. We do).

Rachel

Yupppppers.

Parker

In a sense yes, the hippie attitude is prominent and plays a role on campus. but it is not overwhelming. Weed is most peoples drug of choice, but once again not everyone enjoys it or participates and there is not alot of pressure to. There is definitly a solid group of environment lovers here! As for the stereotypes held by the townies, I feel like that is pretty accurate. Most people here are pretty wealthy kids who want to be hippies.

Meredith

YES.

Leah

No.

Meg

To some extent this is true, but there are many more individuals that don't conform to stereotypes.

aaron

some times and some times not refer to the above question

Julia

a lot of them are, but it doesn't necessarily seem like a bad thing. people are rich but they usually don't flaunt their wealth

Reid

Very, very true! If your not a rich kid, or a hippie your either an athlete or a minority.

Al

Less so now about the hippie thing, but yes about skiing and snowboarding.

Ryan

For the most part, yes. Not real hippies like the 60s, but eccentric, thrift-store shopping, old road bike riding, Subaru driving, wealthy kids pretending to not be quite so well off.

Andrea

Pretty much

Anne Marie

To a large extent, the student body is very outdoorsy and very active. Students hike up Pikes Peak in the middle of the night for fun so they can see the sun rise. The hippie population is dying out as our ranking rises and we accept more students of the Williams or Amherst caliber with higher test scores. The population does, however, remain largely concerned with world issues, (saving the rainforest, Tibet, going Green, etc), and most of us are hippies are heart if not by dress. As for the community college idea, that's obviously inaccurate, though we believe it would greatly help the school to get a new name. Although hockey is a big sport here, few students have season tickets and there's no comparison to the cameron crazies of Duke, for example.

Jordan

very

Dominique

Pretty much

Eric

Somewhat; there are a lot of people here who are truly granola eating, barefooting, guitar playing hikers and skiers, but there are also people who have never slept in a tent and wouldn't get near one.

Jody

for some yes, for some no... as always

Jimmy

To an extent, kids at CC do portray some of the above stereotypes but these kids are passionate and outgoing creating an environment that is very unique and fun.

Jesse

The number of states that people here come from is vast. There is no one region that the school particularly draws from (though there are a few east coast prep school types). The student body is generally liberal, down to party hard, and into the outdoors but very open minded and accepting of different points of view. There are people who are politically conservative, don't drink or smoke, or like camping and they have a fine time here. And not everyone skies. Though if you like skiing then you will have lots of friends to go with here.

Ryan

Yes, somewhat. Like any stereotype, they do not apply to everyone, but a lot of people here definitely fall under at least one or two of those stereotypes. There are lots of different types of people here with all sorts of interests, moreso than I expected. Sometimes it is hard to tell what the student body is like as a whole. I haven't quite figured it out yet. I do know that I meet great people on a regular basis that make me really glad that I go to this school.

Ryan

Some people are hippies, but for the most part people just like to pretend they're hippies by smoking lots of pot.

Alex

Some what, people here are into the enviorment and are pretty active

Jody

To an extent

Ben

CC is liberal for sure, and it bills itself as such, but I've been constantly surprised by the amount of political and socio-economic diversity that I have exprienced on campus. Students tend to be very environmentally aware and almost universally accepting of all kinds of lifestyles and opinions, but you will also find evangelical Christians rooming with dreadlocked atheist stoners, and they still get along great! Almost everyone is what you would classify as "outdoorsy"; people will often not spend a single weekend on campus from the months of October to April. After all, the powder at all the ski resorts within 3 hours is just too good to pass up. The dirty-hippie stereotype is actually quite a minority on campus though, for better or for worse. You get an equal amount of frat types, preps, and normal people who simply like to ski a lot. The academically driven part is true though. People tend to party at CC like there's no tomorrow, and smoke a pretty absurd amount of pot, but only after they finish their paper or project to the fullest extent of their abilities, be involved in every extracurricular on campus, ski on the weekends, and always manage to get A's and be on time to class for discussions no matter how messed up they were the night before.

Harper

Eh, at least in part. Everyone thinks they are going to save the world or the environment or whatever. Yes, people are generally more active here than at other colleges I visited.

Alexander

Yes and no. Yes these stereotypes are present. But every other kind of individual is present as well.

Lily

Almost everyone at CC is very smart which creates an exciting and stimulating environment to learn in. People do work hard preparing for class and spend lots of time on homework, but its true that on the weekends students like to unwind and party. People drink lots of beer and hard alcohol. It is true that many people smoke pot, but it is not an issue for students that don't want to smoke, to avoid it. However if you don't have your own pipe or don't want to buy your own stash of weed, its very easy to mooch off other people who smoke daily. But its unfair to serotype us as all being stoners or dirty hippies. I have been disappointed with the lack of racial diversity here, but I think people too quickly dismiss the other forms of diversity found at CC. There is a vast geographical diversity from where students come from, as well as socioeconomic, and religious diversity. We are a fairly liberal campus so there is admittedly a lack of strong conservative or republican representation. I'd say however that almost all students are very open minded and willing to listen to ideas that differ from their personal beliefs.

Jesse

Basically. We all work really hard though. and there is virtually no diversity even if the students ARE open minded.

Lucy

There are reasons for such stereotypes. People here certainly love the environment, which is not surprising considering the proximity to not only the Rockies but hundreds of different outdoorsy adventures, most importantly ski mountains. For example, I'm the only person on my hall who doesn't know how to rock climb. Lack of diversity is an issue that the school is vigorously addressing, but still remains blatant. However, CC does have a large contingent of both preppy and hipster types and environmental science is not at all the biggest department. People here love people and always have an open mind.

Casey

Partly, but there are a lot of students on financial aid, and most of my friends do not smoke pot. Yes, a ton of us are hippies!
