Julie

I think that there's definitely an assumption about Conn that everyone here is rich, white, and from outside of Boston. And while this may be true for a number of people, not everyone here fits that category. I know I'm certainly not driving my Land Rover around campus and wearing expensive designer clothes everyday! As a matter of fact, none of my friends are either. I think that this stereotype is similar for a lot of the NESCAC schools, but when you really start to talk to people, you realize that people at Conn come from all kinds of backgrounds.

Christie

Lindsay

Harper

People outside of Conn have asked me if the students are artsy or alternative, and a generalization (or perhaps reality) is that it's very liberal; called "the little Brown" by some. Within Conn, there are various groups about which people make generalizations, such as dancers, hockey players, ski clubbers, etc. I've heard sailors and ski clubbers criticize hockey players for being "broski" jocks, whereas hockey players criticize the opposing group as drugees. The animosity fueled by stereotypes is unnerving because I'm sure that all of these groups would enjoy each other's company if they weren't fed opinions.

Kyle

They are rich. They are smart, liberal thinkers.

Alex

Rich, white, preppy new englanders.

Riordan

One widespread stereotype of Connecticut College students is that they are all sailing preppy-types who wear popped collars and boat shoes everywhere. Another stereotype is that Conn Coll is a bubble, which is completely cut off from the outside world, like many other liberal arts colleges. Yet another is that a lot of attractive women go here.

Madison

Conn College is full of a lot of snobby rich kids.

Harper

That the girls are beautiful...and the guys are either typical sports-playing types or kind nerdish folk. The students are very involved in service projects, but the campus itself is in a bubble. Students tend to be very wealthy and those who are able flaunt this. We try to emphasize diversity, but students tend to segregate themselves and racism/sexism/homophobia lurks just underneath the surface.

Steph
