I can only speak for the IFC and Panhellenic fraternities and sororities, not the IGC or NPHC groups, but the Greek scene can be as much or as little a part of your life as you want it to be. Girls in my sorority are generally very involved, but there are also people who are not as involved and that is not frowned upon or chastised. There is a status hierarchy, but it's one of those situations where the only people who care about who is "top tier" are the people who consider themselves "top tier." The frat scene can be a little sexist and homophobic, just as most frat scenes are stereotypically. The hookup culture is incredibly prominent in the greek scene, with very few people looking for relationships within the first two years of Duke.
