What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Ashley

I found that by making a list of activities, sports, and academia that were important to me to be of the most help. I put them into order from most important to least and looked for schools that have similar characteristics. Also when I decided which schools to visit, I went to the campus both at night and during the day so that I could determine how safe I felt in both situations.

Take your kid to the school, encourage them to do overnight stays at the college. Let them make their own decisions about where they want to go.

Parents must understand that this is the biggest defining moment of their child?s life. They are going to make good and bad decisions while in college, but hopefully they will learn from them and come out a much better person. Students remember your family and what they have taught you when making decisions in college don't just jump on the wagon with what everyone else is doing. You will gain more respect from fellow students in the long run if you blaze your own path rather than follow someone else's.

You should really go and check out a college before attending it. At first, I wanted to go to a completely different school than the one I am attending, but after looking at it, I didn't want to go there anymore. And when you finally do move in, join clubs or student activities and make as many friends as possible. You don't want to be sitting in your room all day, it's never fun. Keep on top of your work, don't let anything get behind you, and most importantly, have fun! College is going to be one of the best experiences of your life, and you don't want to waste that. And parents, encourage your kids to get involved with things on campus and that they are having a good time.
