I think this school deals with a lot of particular majors and is very catered to students who know exactly what they want to do after leaving. It sucks that we have to take so many "general education" courses but the courses we do take that are for our major are impeccable, with teachers who are usually involved in whatever area they are teaching, eg: my intro to creative writing:fiction teacher is a writer with published works who has had to deal with the publishing/writing industry out in the "real world." I have had some issues with the students here because they are very "eccentric" students, who can sometimes become "divas" in whatever area they are intrenched in. Since such a great segment of the population here is either a female or a gay male it is hard to find a good personality balance, but once you find a niche of your own it doesn't seem so insane. Bring your own television.

Robin

I am proud to be part of the Emerson community. It really is one of my best accomplishments so far. I transferred there this semester and I already feel like I am looking at a brighter future because of it.

Jack

If I had a second choice, I'd probaby go to Northeastern. That said, WERS 88.9 FM, the campus radio station, is the only reason I'm still here.

Ben

This school has a lot to offer, but it isn't the traditional college experience. In a lot of ways that is a good thing, allows you to create your own experience, but don't expect tailgating of football games and chest painting and ivy walls-- although all of that is T accessible if you're craving a little taste of it.

Meaghan

Emerson is just awesome! It has a lot of equipment and clubs available for anyone going into communication related things.

Ben

I do not recommend Emerson to anyone. it is expensive, it feels like a cell phone plan that is designed to eat up minutes. In this case the school eats up your time with their horrible classes. If you are interested in film, know this: Emerson does not supply you with equipment. Technically they do, but you have to be approved for every light or camera you try to take out. There have been a lot of reports about equipment being broken and in disrepair. As a film student, you will direct maybe 3 films in your four years at Emerson (and thats if you have a lot of money). Most students really only direct their senior film, and ALL students rent their equipment from rental houses, which creates astronomical costs for these little student productions. If you are considering being a film major at Emerson (the Visual Media Arts department being the biggest department at Emerson), ask yourself this: Should I go to a college film program that does not supply me with any of the equipment I need? save your parent's money

This is a crucial time for Emerson College. It seems ready to grow as an institution, and I believe that any actions taken during this time will have a great effect on the future of the institution.

Jenn

I really feel that Emerson was the right place for me. However, if you want a traditional college experience this place is not for you. In addition, this school is really great if you are interested in pursuing something that has to do with television, film, or radio.

Monty

You want to be ready for when you get out there no matter who you are (actor, writer, director, marketer, PR, teacher, communication disorder major, whatever) and want to use state of the art facilities and get individual attention in your craft? Come to Emerson.

Dave

The biggest problem with the school is housing and course selection. They are terribly organized and have a tendency to screw students out of things they need.

Lily

Bottom line--do I regret coming to Emerson College? I do. I'm from Colorado and I feel like coming to this school was way big of a change. I miss the mountains and the nature and the people who are free-minded with optimistic view of life. However, if you are looking for a city life, meeting new people every day, and just concentrating on your major, Emerson is a perfect fit for you. Good night, and good luck.

Molly

Emerson is a great place to be. Of course it has some problems, every school does. But I'm so happy here. All I can do is rave about this place because when you're at the right school you just know it. I've found friends and a major that I'm happy with and a terrific city, and those are the best things about any school. I would recommend highly that ANYONE interested in communications or the arts take a look at Emerson, you won't regret it.

Joe

Ummmmmmmmmm......... best school ever. Hope I got that across well enough. Though not the school for you if you're looking for a huge party school. Kids take their classes pretty seriously, but after that everyone's always having a good time.

Lee

Loves me some Emerson!

Tate

Love Emerson!

Courtney

Some of the professors (esp. in theater) are intimidating, but don't let that get to you - they want to help. And be sure to get a T pass - it will come in handy.

Ryan

If you are a slacker, stoner, overly liberal, hipster scene kid, then you will fit right in at Emerson. Also, don't forget to bring along your self-righteousness and selfishness.

jenny

emerson is just a very nice school and i loved it right away, we have two studios and you c an always make an appointment to learn to use the equipment.

Lee

EMERSON LOVES POT. its a fact that has been written and is known to the world. Emerson loves the greenery. Night life emersn rocks. everyone is chill, and loves to party and those who dont drink or dont do other stuff are still cool to hang out, so if you are staight edge, dont hate, you can still have a good time. If you are into bars you are in luck, Boston is one huge college bar, if you are under 21 and into bars youre fucked, Boston takes pride in stealing fakes. If you are into clubs, than Emerson is for you, there are tons of clubs that are around and some on campus, the best clubs in boston are all within a 5 minute walk of emerson. this also creates a rather hysterical late night scene on the streets of campus. like one million euro trash paris hilton and my new hair cut types just being rediculous. i prefer house parties which Alston is great for and are a ton of fun, full of beer pong, kegs, and a guaranteed good time. Come to emerson, i recommend it.

Classes=good. Everything else=sucks

Emerson has received a lot of very positive and very sudden recognition in its theatre, film, and writing departments. This has caused the school to receive a lot more applicants and accept a lot more students than it has previously. The administration isn't quite catching up to the school's sudden popularity and growth, so a lot of things are under construction in terms of dorms and general policies. Each class Emerson welcomes will most likely be even better and more talented than the one preceding it, but until the administration can deal with us all, it's going to be hard to fully enjoy Emerson as the smaller classes have.

Grace

The dorms are really nice compared to a lot of other schools' dorms. The floors are brightly lit, wide... perfect for Freshmen to hang out in. Each floor has a common room with a TV, stove, microwave. One problem with Emerson is that there's not really any place you can go if you want privacy. For example, if you need to have a serious phone conversation (and don't want to tell your roommate to leave), people usually sit in the laundry room or in the stairwell. If those spots are taken, then too bad. The dining hall is decent. The Home cooking is kind of crappy because half the time the food will taste terrible and half the time it'll be really good. The Grill is the safest way to go usually, along with the Deli section. Emerson is a VERY different kind of school as compared to most colleges and universities. There are a lot of students who transfer out of Emerson after a semester or two, because lots of kids come and then find that it's not what they expected. If you want big sports teams to cheer for, then you'll be disappointed. If you want beautiful campus grounds where you can take nice strolls and think to yourself "what a beautiful campus," then you'll be disappointed. If you want to take math/science courses.... go away and look at a MIT review instead. In any case, if you are very driven to work in communications and/or the arts and love the city life, then Emerson can do wonders for you. If you decide to come to Emerson... one little heads up, the Orientation kind of sucks. I don't think I talk to anybody I met through orientation activities anymore. Hopefully it'll be different for you.

Christine

Definitely don't regret a darned thing in coming here and in my four years here; this place was perfect for me from the start and has helped me grow in so many ways.

Brittany

Emerson will academically challenge you, as well as open your eyes to new lifestyles and cultures you have never interacted with before.

Nic

If you want a career in communications, especially journalism, theater or writing for film/TV, then Emerson has an excellent reputation and will open the door to a ton of connections. If you say you go/went to Emerson then people will be IMPRESSED. I'm quiet and I don't speak up about my opinions unless I'm asked directly, so I'm in the minority and I'm overshadowed by the bigger characters. I don't go to Emerson because I have things in common with the majority of the student body, I go to Emerson because it will look good on my resume, my professors know what they're talking about, and future employers in my field of journalism know that Emerson students are better prepared for the job than students from almost every other college in the country, and will require much less ''real world'' training before they are ready to start working.

Lane

Not really. Emerson is a wonderful school.

Shelby

I said more than enough I think :) haha

Blake

Emerson College: Wholly responsible for keeping the words "postmodern" and "aristotilean" in the vernacular. Emerson College: We're unique in the exact same way!

Kelly

Emerson is a small school where you will get to know almost everyone. The teachers are really chill and your a name here not a number. If you want a regular college experience don't come here. It's very different from any other college.

Dylan

You will be surprised by how many guys are gay, and by junior year your gay-dar will probably have sharpened a lot. But being surrounded by all the gays might rub off on you, and you might just find yourself flirting (or even better, hooking up) with someone of the same sex after a night of too much drinking :).

Sam

You won't really get a feel for this school unless you talk to a student here who is really thriving here. Whether it is personally thriving, in that they are more social and happy than ever before or professionally thriving because their career is really taking off, they are the ones who will really help you figure out if the school is right for you. Taking a tour and talking to a school administrator can be helpful, but they are making money off of you, talk to someone who is paying money already, to find out if it's right for you.

Tristan

I can't lie to the kids coming here. i knew nothing about the school other than what i recieved by mail and online before i arrived. Overall i'm not upset about my choice of school. but it is a very different college life to that compared to larger campuses, so be prepared. if media is what your interested in you are in the right place so have no fear :)

Terry

Emerson is awesom and the students are really open. Find any on facebook and myspace, and ask them questions. They are not shy and will answer mostly anything you ask them.

Sam

Professors grade pretty easily but give good advice.

I LOVE EMERSON

Lorie

Emerson is great and very welcoming! Come! You'll love it! I know I do and I came here knowing no one and never really visiting Boston except for the college tour. I made friends immediately and don't regret my decision.

Rachel

Emerson is in fact gay.

Katie

If I were a gay man I would go here honestly you have such a selection and a good one at that!

Andy

Basically if you want a really good education in your field and want a city atmosphere and very diverse student body, then come here. We party hard and have crazy kinds of fun, but its also a great school. And seriously, we smoke a lot of weed.

Devin

It helps to have friends outside of Emerson. Move off campus at some point. it' a great experience the dining hall food is good. for a year. then, not so much, no.NONO. Library hours absolutely suck the school closes down at 6pm on weekends - WHAT YOU DON'T WANT US TO WORK!? no one cares about SGA TALK TO PEOPLE. EXPLORE THE SCHOOL. THERE'S SOOOOO MANY HIDDEN GEMS!!! SO MANY! So many great oppurtunities! And they're not that hard to find!

Julie

College is what you make of it - you can be happy or unhappy anywhere. Just look at major things like location, academics, and extracurriculars, and if those are a good fit then you can usually forge a good experience.

Rico

Most people are begging for attention at Emerson. Sometimes going there made me feel like a real asshole.

amanda

I was very miserable at Emerson until my senior year I travelled abroad. That changed everything. Students at Emerson seem to be a lot happier if they begin there and end there. If you join in the middle like I did, it is a lot harder to adjust because the school doesn't emphasize the importance of transfer students being happily involved. If you do go to Emerson, do not spend every semester in Boston. Please go to the Kasteel, LA or Prague. The world is too big and exciting to stay in one place the entire time. If you can, go to two of them. They are all amazing programs. After graduating, I have gone against liberalism because of how strong it is at Emerson. If you do not have strong political beliefs before Emerson, you will leave with some. You will get obsessed with causes to the point of it taking of your life...or you will be one of the few, like me, who went to the completely opposite side. Emerson is VERY pretentious, yes, but not everyone is as bad as that 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. There are some awesome, normal, intelligent people who go to our school. Not everyone is an artsy dodge ball target, I swear! And yes, it is true that musical theatre majors sing in the elevators, in the hallways alllllll the time! Again, I am one person and not everyone at Emerson feels the way I do, so I apologize if what I say is offensive or not helpful.

Casey

perhaps if Emerson was more commuter-friendly or more affordable, I'd be having a better experience.

Alecia

THIS SURVEY IS WAY TOO LONG.

Celeste

I know this is a small thing but my biggest negative comment about Emerson is that their mail system is TERRIBLE, especially concerning packages. In the beginning of the year I had my new laptop shipped directly to the school, but it was lost (or stolen)somewhere between being carried off the delivery truck and entered into the system to be delivered to me. After attempting to claim that this wasn't their fault for a few weeks they finally broke down and ended up buying me a new computer. I have also gotten packages days, weeks, months late and they are often beaten up (or even opened) as if they've been kicked around the mail room for awhile. It is an endless source of frustration and even though it's not the biggest factor in receiving a worthy education or having a memorable college experience it is still something that drives me crazy! Also, it is extremely easy to test out of requirements. There are only two gen eds that you can not test out of: a speech class and research writing. I took seven AP courses and a University in High School for French course in high school and they took all of the credits (even those with a score of 3, but this depends on the subject). Also if you get higher then, I think, 500-something on the math SATs that gets you out of the math requirement too. I entered Emerson with 34 credits and therefore will be graduating a year early!

Alexi

Whether or not I "like" Emerson varies on which day you ask me. For the most part, I've been here for 3 years because of the activities that I participate in and the friends that I have made.

Parker

Emerson is fantabulous.

Becky

Emerson is my dream school, and I'm lucky enough to be attending it. But I know that it's not for everyone, and only certain types of people will be happy here.
