What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Elan

Students first of all decide where you want to go to school. Decide if you want to stay close to home or if you want to go out of state, whether it be down south, up north, or on the east or west coast. Next, students figure out how big you want your school to be. For example, if you want to go to a small university or college then you can rule out universities and colleges that do not fit your needs. Then, students you need to decide what you want to major in and then from there go trhrouh and see what cllege or university provides the best program for what you're interested in. Students when you get to college make as many friends as you can, students, staff, and administration. Make sure you have a tight relationship with your professors and administration because these contacts will come in handy throughoutyour matriculation. Lastly, make the most out of these four years. Have fun and experinment, but always remember o stay on top of your academics because at the end of the day you are at this college or university to receive an education.

Do your research, and do it well. Talk to advisors and ambassadors of the school, but always ask students of the school how the school really is. Most of the time students wont fabricate how things are going on their perspective campuses. Advice for simply making the most out of your college experience is to simply be open to all new positive things going on within your campus and in the community around you. Dont place yourself in this box and keep yourself seclude from diverse events. Keep academics first; basically get your work done, but go out enjoy any and every experience you possibly can. You only have one time to enjoy college. Enjoy it to the fullest!

I would tell students to visit the prospective college campuses and talk to current students, to really get a feel for how the school is from their perspective. I would tell parents to meet with professors and those prople in administration to see if these are the people that you would want to entrust your child to for at least four years. Then I would say that parents and students need to discuss what they have observed with each other.

Victoria

Visit the college first and see if you can sit in on some classes to see if you really like the school.

Bianca

make sure you look at what the school has to offer, and if it has programs that you want to participate it, or if it offers financial aid, scholorships, tutuoring, and avavlibilty to join extracurricular activities. also if there is a diverse group of people attending the university. As well as the location of the school and the actual cost of attendance.

While it is important to find a good school: one that provides a good education and looks impressive on a resume; it is also important to find a school that caters to your personal needs. You not only want a school that gives you a top-notch education, but one that also gives you a pleasurable and memorable undergrad experience. Once you have found the school for you, take advantage of every opportunity that the campus has to offer. Trying new campus activities could help you discover what you really want to do after graduation, or even before graduation. Also, trying new things also plays an important role in helping you "find yourself." If you are attending a school that is far from home, joining organizations that suit you and/or making friends is a good way to establish a "family" away from home and lifelong relationships to help make your college experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Not all schools have everything you are interested in. Taking the initiative to start an activity on your campus ensures that you and others with the same interest get what you need and provides you with leadership experience. Take your experience in stride.

steven

dont go to or pick a school because it has a big name good things come in small packages and know the type of school that will work for you as far as class size.

Vanessa

To th students ask youself what you are interested in and what do you like. When you find out search for schools that have great programs in that field. If you are not sure of what you want to do I think it would be best to attend a liberal arts school when you do this you will get the opportunity to study a wide range of fields and you will eventually find something that you are interested in.

Visit every option-- You'll never know its the perfect fit unless you see it and experience it for yourself

If I had to give advice to parents or college students about finding the right college and making the most out of the college experience, I would ask them first to sit down and think about what they really wants out of the experience. I would ask them if they were going to college for the sole purpose of being able to work in their career of choice, or if they were going because they had a desire for learning and education, and not just to get a degree so they can move into their field they so choose. Then I would ask them to decide what things where important to them in their life, and what they want out of a college and their college experience. What activities must the campus have, what things they may want to do, and what type of environment as well as surrounding area they would like to live in, type of weather and so forth. After they wrote this down, I would then tell them to look at colleges and select the ones that best fit what they want, and to visit if they can. With this approach, things will fall into place.

When deciding what school to attend, make sure you take all aspects of the school into consideration (campus size, class size, price, location...etc.). Remember, you will be spending the next four years of your life here!

Academia has entered an era of "selling" schools with high test scores, state of the art classrooms, fitness centers, and celebrity professors. In May of 2009 I will graduate from an undergraduate institution that had none of the forementioned factors. A small liberal arts college with a meager endowment, but rich in history and tradition. I have discovered that resources don't make the grade, dedicated students and qualified professors, that are commited to excellence do. In the end choosing the right college falls to the student. Find a place that you feel comfortable, that will nuture you into a productive and capable adult . Find an institution that will prepare you for the increasing competitiveness of today's job market. Surround yourself with like minded positive students who are supportive of your academic endeavors and will be present always. Get active join something! And most importantly make the most out of your experience, by GOING TO CLASS!! Someone's paying for your education please get their money's worth! And finally... have fun!! I can honestly say, the best of my 21 years have been at my soon to be alma mater .Good Luck and Godspeed! -A. College Senior

Parents should really be involved with their child not only before but during the transition from highschool to college, alot of student have hard times adjusting to being away from home for long periods of time. Students college is the time for you to get out and experience the world, make new friends, learn things you never knew before and make a life for yourself .

Know one really knows entirely what they want from a college when looking. It is usually the case that what you get is somewhat different from your original agenda. Socially, Academically, Financially, it doesn't matter: be prepared for a curveball. I guess more accurately, be open for curveballs. The whole point of extended education is to figure out what you don't know, so choose your school accordingly. The ideal is an institution that allows for the most potential for growth. In other even if your sure what looking for in an institution now, don't put "all your eggs in one basket," so to speak. It's a gamble to assume that you'll be the same person in 4 years, so you want to pick an environment not just conducive to what you want now, but conducive to everything you could be in the future in all aspects of the college experience.

Find a school that best fits your goals. Does this school excel in your prospective field of study? What is your school known for? Biology, Pre- Law, Performing Arts? Knowing what your school is knownfor is crucial, because the popular fields of study will often recieve priority in Financial aid and have the most opportunities available. If you want to become a Doctor, attend a school that is known for producing many Doctors, if you want to become an Actress, attend a school that is known for producing Tony and Oscar winners.

British

Be true to your heart. If the institution feels right, then go for it no matter how much is being offered by other institutions. Don't let money be the deciding factor in choosing your school.

Ashley

Research the school beforehand. It is very important that you know the soul purpose of that university and its goal when it comes to keeping their students from dropping out of school. Make sure you attend a college based upon your choice, not your parents for you will not have a so-great experience at the university. Once you attend the school of your choice, make sure you get involved in the school and the community. Being involved in many activities keeps you active and engaged into what the school has to offer throughout the year. Plus, it will look great on your transcript that your a well-rounded student who is trying to make the best out of his/her college. When you go to class, ask questions that you don't know the answer to. It's even better when you go to a small school becuase you can get that close relationship with your professors that can help you in passing their class. Stay dedicated and focused into your studies while attending college. Don't let your friends or other associates distract you from obtaining your soul purpose of going to college.

Krystal

College is something that you will never forget. While plenty of children settle for colleges because of small things, when you're passionate about a certain college or university, do what it takes to make sure what you want becomes yours. Things will get difficult, and simply paying for school can be challenging, but at the end of every day when you walk into your dorm room, you feel somewhat accomplished because you're talkin small steps towards your success in life. You don't have to know what you want to do as soon as you get to college, but learning while you're there expands your horizons. You'll be surprised with the people you'll meet.

Tahisha

Visit schools on your own outside of open houses and campus tours. Talk to different types of students randomly about the campus and compare answers.

Ashli

Parents need to tour the college and ask as many questions as possible before attending. Parents need to include not only cost, but the social enviornment. The student has to feel comftorable enough to grow socially and academically. College is more than just academics; College is supposed to grow and mature the student. The college should offer programs to help the student get accustomed to being away from home. A good college should have a strong alumni system to offer support and advice to the students.

Jenice

For students, make sure you visit the school that you are interested in before you attend.

Bobby

listen 2 ur kids because sometimes they dont want the same thing you want for them as a parent. really think about if your children are fulfilling your dreams for you or are they fulfilling their dreams for themselves. You may not find the answer by just asking them because the child will always want to make you happy. You have to pay attention and support your child and help them but allow them to make some mistakes. If you try to save them from all their mistakes they will not know how to handle mistakes when you are not there

Desiree

I would advise parents and prospective students to continue to do their research on possible schools, the city and state the school is located, and actually take some time to visit the school for a tour and more information. Once you been accepted to those schools, narrow them down to three to visit! Seeing a school in reality rather than viewing brochures, and websites helps one in making a decision on how the campus made the student feel such as whether the environment, students, and maybe even food reminds them of home and makes them feel comfortable as if they are at home. Once you find the perfect school that does just that than thats when you know you are at the right college. You make the most of your college experience from there from the activities you get involved in to the classes you major in. Good Luck!!!!!!!!

British

The advice I can give parents and most importantly students in choosing the right college and making the most of the college experience is to follow your heart. Follow your right mind when it comes to choosing the right school, because if you dont then no matter how much money the student gets in financial aid and scholarships the experience is not heart felt, and national statistics show this result in Freshman retention rates within institutions of higer learning. In choosing a college, the student has to know his/her own weaknesses and strong points academically and socially. Does the student want a large school, a small school, a liberal arts institution, technical institution? Or perhaps the student wants to attend a private Ivy League instition or a state funded school, maybe a majority school or and HBCU. Whatever the student's choice is the parent(s) should be equally supportive of thier decision, for this is a major transition that their student is going through and if their support system is broken then the success of the student is hindered. Lastly, to the student maximize your college experience, build as many friendships and a support system made for you.

Krisina

The advice that I would give to students about finding the right college would be to choose the school they feel they would be most comfortable attending; one that embodies their personality and value of education. This is important because, too often do students choose a school that just doesn't suit them at all. Consequently, the student may end up transferring to another college or remain miserable at an institution that doesn't cater to their needs. So, selecting the right school is necessary not only for the success of the student academically, but also socially. Attending the right school will enable the student to make the most of their college experience. For one, they will be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone, and two, it will help eliminate their fear of meeting new people and/or experiencing new things. The college years are the most important years of an adolescent's life. These are the years in which an individual's true character develops and when the indivual embarks on that journey from adolescence to adulthood. Therefore, a student should enjoy college because it is short-lived and it deserves to be forever cherished.

AKINOLA

Make sure you research the school and visit before you make any decisions.
