Meliza

Annette tells us her thoughts on FIU

Kathy

In a nutshell: we're diverse group of individuals, but we all get along and are daily challenged to meet the expectations of teachers -something I know they do to prepare us for the real world.

Lauren

Our student body is VERY diverse. I have never seen or heard about any gay bashing or racially motivated problems here. Everyone really seems to get along and it is great to cruise through the Graham Center and see various groups represented almost daily with booths and exibitions on the dance floor area.

stuart

a student who is a small towner and not into communicating much, interacting, or experinceing new things may suffer some culture shock. because these students tend to skeep to themselves and not really congregate to find each other. but for the most part, with all the diversity, there's bound to be a niche for you. most students are from the south florida area or from another country...but then again most people fromthe south florida area are from another country...lol! :o)

Nemo

Student body is great in terms of social and organizational skills. They do a great job when it comes to activities. However, it is a little unsettling that the majority of officials in SGA are Greek while the majority of students are not. This begs the question, how is it democracy?

Julian

FIU is a commuter school, and I like it that way. The students are generally Cuban-American, upper-class, and vote conservative in a vague way.

Gabi

Though many students do not care about learning and go to school simply because its routine, there are a lot of students who try their hardest to excel in the academic field.

Vanessa

For the most part, there are cliques just like in high school. Each sorority and fraternity has its own clique, for example.

Dale

sometimes student body is like a highschool...especially GC...the student population is segemented into cliques...its sad at the university level.

Natalie

I don't think anyone would feel out of place at FIU, cause I've seen everything here. People wear, listen to, do, and are interested in all sorts of things. Most people, I'd say, or lower middle class and live in Miami. People talk about money all the time. I don't really see too much interaction across social groups.

Devin

The sudent body in FIU is very diverse, you find students from all over the globe, and this is one of the things that makes FIU stand out from the rest

Jess

Most FIU student actually commute and travel to school. Ethnically there are many hispanics heere at FIU.

Christopher

Too politically apathetic.

Eric

FIU's student body is very diverse. You will find every ethnicity and nationality here, though predominately Hispanic. There are student groups lauding and supporting all student causes, racial, religious, LGBT, etc.

Daniel

FIU is the most diverse place in the world. I have met people from all over Europe and Africa, and of course Central and South America.

cindy

i don't really focus on that. I'm there to learn.

Gabriel

We are a very multi-cultural University.

Kelly

There are a lot of hispanics, blacks, caribbean, asians, etc... I think it's a very nice mix. Only thing thats odd for me are the white people. I went to a high school where everyone mingled; the white people at FIU stick to each other only

Andres

I think the type of people we have here in the school is what makes the name for the school, because without them we wouldn't be recognized for anything

Kevin

No problems.

Lee

FIU is very diverse, you can play the elevator game where if 5 students enter an elevator from FIU, you'll immediately have 5 different countries represented.

Torry

I believe that no student would feel out of place, but many would not feel united to the rest of the student body.

Monica

There are students from many cultural backgrounds at FIU and because of this, I think many people have learned to be tolerant of other cultures. However, at the same time, you see that people with similar nationalities all hang together and do not really get to know people outside of these groups.

Ana

FIU is a primarily hispanic and caribbean school but I do feel that neither the education nor the organizations exclude anyone from any ethnic group.

Andres

I think FIU is cultually diverse with many students for Latin Countries. I would say we dress casually. I think the stereotypical college closes; cargo shorts and a bright colored shirt for guys and clothes from Forever XXI for girls. I would say most students are from middle and lower income families because of the big minority population.

Torry

I would change the commuter attitude that people have about the school. If people knew and got into what FIU has to offer they would value their college more and be proud to show their school spirit.

Jessie

- uninvolved students feel out of place - jeans and shirt is the most common attire - most students are commuters and hispanic - middle class is most common

Ryan

whatever

Abdel

less greek org please

Jordan

Most FIU students are from the Miami area with some from other parts of Florida and even fewer from other parts of the country and world. But even with most people being from Miami it seems as if everyone at FIU has a different ethnic background. The student body is very diverse.

Kai

The student body is quite varied but I'm truly impressed with the amount of people involved even in the smallest thing, I love it, I think is specially good considering this is a commuter school.

Tate

The student body has about 38,000 students, and about 4,000 are the involved ones..

Ryan

The FIU student body is very diverse and consists mainly of local commuter students. The different cultures blend well, and I've never noticed any issues due to the diversity. Some students who have never encountered as much diversity might experience a culture shock when first coming to FIU, but its a positive experience.

vanessa

I have never experienced or seen anyone being disrespectful, especially not in any racist or homophobic fashion. Our university is right in the middle of a city that is so diverse that tolerance is part of our everyday life. Most of my friends are from different countries than me and some are gay and some are straight, but that has no effect on my friendships with them. I feel that most students at FIU are not scared or offended by people who are different from them. I think most of us welcome this.

Alex

The students are great ... we are so diverse and unique that you not only learn from the teachers, you learn from the students. the fact that we have 18year olds to 60year olds coming to class we also get networking and friendships that grow to more...corporate partners, life long friendships and partners and the best representation of the world. Students are real and thats whats so cool...there is no predominant anything...we are a sample size of the world

Tristan

Eeverything is good

Natasha

FIU is very diverse which is why I like it so much. It's very unusual for someone to feel out of place because there's all kinds of ethnicities. Students dress fairly decent on average. THere are more Indians, Blacks, and Latin students on campus.

Ash

no experiences with racial groups. its an international university so everyone has someone of similar background to mingle with

Bobby

What kind of student would feel out of place at FIU? No one. There are just about every race, religion and socio-economical background of students here. What do most students wear to class? Just about whatever they feel comfortable in. There are some who wear shorts and flip flops, some wear suits and some who wear jeans and polos. Do different types of students interact? Yes. Greek life is basis of it all.

Angelica

I have not had ant type of bad experiences with any type of religious, LGBT, or any other groups etc. And since most of the students at FIU are ethnically diverse we have all types of student interactions.

Anthony

The population of students is very diverse making the "international" standout in the school's name. One can learn from the experiences and perpectives of many cultures just by making friemds and having conversations with students.

Mike

They are too crazy. A conservative student would feel out of place here. Diferent students don't interact.

Robert

This is mixed school with a bunch of diffent races from different countries, religions, and background, we have the title INTERNATIONAL in our school name, so its a melting pod, everyone would feel welcomed here. Some dress business casual some dont depends on the mood of the person and if they have work after class or not. yes students blend with each other most of the students are either from miami or out of the country. some come from middle class families some are politically aware. every student has money on their mind..... why else would they be in school

Hunter

Great student body. Very diverse people and open minded. Middle class, working class. Very random and diverse styles at FIU. Students are goal oriented.
