Florida International University Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Jordan

Professors are, for the most part, willing to spend time with you outside of class. The professors here do treat their students, even freshmen, like adults.

Kai

Academics in FIU are good, is mostly what you make of it. There are classes which are huge, some other ones are very small, so you get a feel for both.

Tate

Academics.... It's "okay."

Ryan

Academics at FIU aren't as bad as people often imply they are. I feel that every professor has sufficiently taught me the material, and that most professors make an effort to apply classroom learning to real life experiences. Most of the professors make an effort to learn your name, with the exception of a few of the multi-section lecture courses with 100+ students. The curriculum itself it rather liberal, with the required "core" curriculum encompassing a broad range of subjects.

vanessa

Most of my professors have learned my name by the third week of school and most of them have tried their best to know their students and help them as much as possible.

Alex

Academics rock!!! my advisors are always helping me and giving me the best suggestions ever. My teachers have taught me so much and have helped me grow as an individual and a student. Yes i have had bad teachers and some advising has not been the most beneficial...but again we are a pretty large university...stuff happens. My professors actually care about the success of their students and wants to help us grow and make it in the real world

Tristan

Professors don't know my name.... I feel there's a high need for more orientation and advertisement of expected deadlines.

Natasha

Professors do well with knowing my name in class.. I've been noticing that students actually do study more. Class participation is usually very good. Intellectual conversations out of class...Not really..It depends.. My best class would have to be REL 2011 and POT 3013.. Very Memorable.

Ash

favorite class is computer application. there is class participation but it varies depending on the class

Bobby

Program Review is a systematic way to meet both the legislative and University intent to assess the quality of our academic degree programs while determining ways to improve the quality of education, research and service. The five-year review period enables degree programs to better align their goals and plans with those of the college and University. This process is designed to build a better understanding of the whole program among faculty, staff and University leadership. The program review process is composed of four elements: 1) Self-Study by Department: A comprehensive report on the total academic program focused on each of the degree programs. Contains the department vision, mission, goals, and recommendations based on an analysis of program information and measurable indicators that place the program within the context of the University and discipline. 2) External Consultant: An external consultant or team provides an objective outsider's view on the quality of the program. 3) Public Forum: An opportunity for the faculty to present their self-study findings and express their vision and goals for the future. This is an open forum of students, faculty, the University community, and the Executive Review Committee composed of University leadership.

Angelica

My favorite classes are my psychology courses that im taking, they are awesome. Least favorite classes are anything with math, because FIU does not have really good math professors. In my classes class participation is common we seem to be pretty competitive at what we do. I think like everything we have professors that are horrible just like we have professors that are awesome, no one school is perfect, so FIU has pretty good professors for the most part. I think FIU education is competitive and at the same geared more toward being able to receive a job. I alsi wanted to add that we have an awesome Career services department that are always there to help out in all aspects, from resume critiques to businees etiqutte dinners, internships, mock trials, yep they are wonderful! I also want to mention that FIU has wonderful and always there to help academic advisers, yes they are awesome as well!

Daphne

Many teachers have a problem speaking English. This may be Miami, but not every one is of hispanic decent and can understand their teachers when they speak Spanish.

Anthony

The Marketing department and in general the Business school at FIU is a world-class program with great faculty. Not all of them are as inspiring and as great as the rest but overall, the programs are as diverse as the populations and the faculty is a mix of individuals with great experience in their field. Depending on the interest of the student, most teachers are very approachable and willing to help.

Mike

The professors don't know my name. Nor do they are to learn it. They mostly care is finishing their research and enjoying the Miami sun, instead of teaching the class.

Sasha

The main core classes required for business majors, the professors are indifferent and not the highest quality.

Robert

I dont really have a favorite class, more like favorite teachers, which makes me enjoy the class. I study probally 5 hours per week. Class particpation is common if the class is interesting. As far as intellectual conversations outside of class.... I dont think so. Some students are more competitive than others but that's everywhere. Operations Management with Steven Ellis The academis requriements is good, however the advisment procedure needs to definatly change.

Hunter

Prof. Luis Fernandez, psychology is a great professor. My best in my four years. Due to budget cuts there are many fun classes that have been taken away. Judo is one of them (it was a great extra class). Education is geared toward getting a job but these budget cuts are not helping at all. Mandique needs to spending so much money on football and landscaping and more on classes and teachers.

Harper

Classes are big so most teachers won't know our name. My favorite was Harry Potter english class and my race in america class. One was personable and good material and the other class was good material. Business majors have intelligent conversation outside of class. Students arent really competitive. I will FIU needs to have a better UCC requirement and more choices.

Ryan

Some profs are bad some are good..just like in any other school...school is tough here...if you dont open a book....

Chris

Lots of options, geared toward getting a job

Tate

Professors will only know your name if you actually go talk to them or go to their office hours for the most part because classes are big. Students study often...but not as often as I think they should be studying. Even in the library students will goof around. But that's what I like about FIU. It's not always so serious. It's a nice laid back environment for most of the year...the only exception is when everyone is freaking out over midterms and finals. But you'll only see that in the library. Around campus everyone is relaxed having a good time. The only thing that might be annoying is the fact that intellectual conversations outside of class are scarce....and even in class. Some students are competitive (the ones that make the A's) but the majority, as I said before, are laid back.

Monica

Many of the classes are small, which is great because sometimes the professors are able to cater more to your learning needs. However, for certain majors - say business - I feel like the professor are not even trying to teach us anymore. They are getting paid to assign us books and not necessarily teach.

Maria

Class sizes are kind of big therefore teachers don't get to know you in a personal level. There is a wide range of classes. The library is well equipped and confortable.

Jessie

Favorite class legal enviroment of business. John Wreden is an amazing professor.

jaime

are intense, i believe them to be very underated

Tristan

FIU has its mixture of great teachers and terrible ones. There are a handful that make the effort to know my name. Some FIU students do have intellectual conversations outside of the classroom, but those are usually phylosophical or academically driven students.

Mel

amazing business professors!!! especially FINANCE profs

Nico

Some professors do know you by name. My favorite class was CGS 3300 my least was ENC1101. Students stuidy pretty often, the library is always full. Class participation is not common. I believe that FIU students do have intellectual conversations outside of class. Students are not competetive. The most unique class I've ever taken is ENC 1102. My majors are International Business, Finance, and MIS, FIU is in the top 10 schools for business nationwide. No i do not spend time with professors outside of class. I feel FIU's academic requirements are just right. The education at FIU is geared toward getting your degree over with.

Harper

FIU is geard towards getting a job. Professors are hard to find after class.

Veronica

I was not told that instead of entering the Honors College to investigate if your major may have an honors tract.

Bryce

As I have mentioned FIU is not a great place to find professors that are very good at teaching nor helping students. Your own your own, that's how FIU academics are. Amazingly when it comes to helping other students, FIU students are very helpful which has positive and negative outcome. Inside the classroom participation is not that lively probably the reason is that boring subjects and professors. Furthermore, most professors tend to do a lecture not focusing on the studnets but on their slides or microsoft power point presenation. FIU has a lot of requirements to get in but once you get in, you end up asking "WHY?" because most classes at FIU is not worth taking for due to poor learning environment inside the classroom and lack of unprofessional professors.

Iris

FIU's requirements are honestly not that bad. They're in place to ensure students are well-rounded in their studies. But even with the University Core Curriculum (UCC), students have opportunities to take classes associated with their major that can satisfy UCC requirements. For example, in the English major, one course is recommended for the UCC for a student to take, because it's closely affiliated with later classes. But once students get past the UCC and enter major requirements, classes become a lot more focused, smaller, and frankly, fun. I feel this is especially the case with the English major. The English department has many professors dedicated to their field. Most of them have doctorates in specialized fields pertaining to literature in some way; many of them are published, and others included are currently working on new contributions to their field (eg. research, novels, etc). The professors are very approachable and friendly, but they can sometimes be very busy - office hours are precious. There are a few professors who can be reached outside of class (I know one in particular who gives out his cell phone number the first day of class, in case students need to reach him). If you have a particular project you're working on independent of the general coursework you're taking (say, poetry or a short story), many professors are more than happy to take a look at your work and provide feedback. These opportunities are very important, because these are the same professors who can provide you with recommendations to graduate school and other programs outside of undergraduate studies. English majors participate frequently in courses through discussion, but there isn't much of an air of competition. (Sure, there may be one or two of the Pretentious, but they're generally a minority.) Outside of class, students (in general) do not really tend to talk about coursework or related topics - but I think this varies with the individuals one associates with.

Nico

I had few professors who knew my name and I don't doubt that they still know my name. My favorite class was with Dr. Potocky. I don't remeber the name of the class. It was social work related. This was my best class as the teacher did an excellent job in explaining the difficult subject in the easiet way possible. Class participation was common among my cohorts that studied social work.

Max

Most professors in my classes now do not know my name. Classes are way too big. My favorite class was legal environment of business, with professor John Wrieden (he did know my name). Most students (not including me) study many hours throughout the week, so they say. Class participation is common, especially when most teachers in my program require group projects. I am a business major, specializing in international business. No time spent with professors out of class, unless there's a make-up test or a question when I see them. The academic requirements are fine. The education I am getting is priceless, and geared towards the market I hope to be working in -- Miami.

Brett

Most professors do know their students by name. My favorite classes were my languages classes they were great because not only did I learn a lot but I enjoyed the classes. The professors made learning fun and exciting. My least favorite class was a geography course, but it was not because of the professor, but because I was not really interested in the material itself, but the professor made it tolerable and I still went to class all the time. Many FIU students to have intellectual conversations outside of class. There are many student activits that are also activists in the Miami community, and mnay started or met at FIU, so this is also something that FIU should be proud of! I do think that the academic requirements at FIU are at a great standard, and it did prepare me for the "real" world.

Sarah

Very few professors know my name. Students must study a lot, because the library is constantly crowded.

Jessie

Yes - Most Favorite, Legal Enviro. to Business by Wriden; Least Favorite, Mangament by Ronnie Sivlerblatt (horrible) - A lot - somewhat - some do, but not most - yes, students are - the most unique, innovations managment by Prof. Bates - Business Dept. is good but advising is probably the worst. - no - Academic req. are fine - i think that for the last year it has shifted towards getting a job.

Ash

My professors do not know my names. My least favorite is calculus for business and students study very often. The dedicated ones study the most, others study a day or two before an exam or quiz. i spend time with professors, but only if i really need them so I would go to their office hours. the education at FIU is geared towards getting a job.

TJ

The professors I had knew my name because of the relatively small size of the classes (50). My favorite class was International Banking because it required one to think out of the box (challenging for short). My least favorite class was Biology lab. The course was interesting but the instructor was terrible, she knew her but couldn't teach. Only a minority of students willingly partake in classroom discussions. The rest usually join the discussion only if it is listed as one of the course completion requirements. I majored in Finance, all my professors were great but the department wasn't instrumental to my success at FIU. FIU's academic requirements need to be changed to reflect the needs of students in writing, and mathematics.

Jonathan

Professors tend to not know my name when I'm in their classes, probably due to the large size of most of my auditorium classes. However, the professors I've had in my major classes (education), have gotten to know me in their classes and I've gotten advice from them regarding my future plans and further topics. I know first hand that my friends and I prioritize our studies over any other activity. Every now and then we get out and "let loose"! I tend to hear a lot of students (outside of class) having intriguingly, intellectual conversations. The most unique class I've taken is that of Gay and Lesbian in the United States. It is the most interesting and intriguing class I've ever taken and I definately recommend it to anyone looking for a class that would spark their interests! I believe FIU has some very rigorous requirements for academic studies. I know for sure that education major students must dedicate tremendous amounts of their time outside of class schedules to obtain their observation credits/hours, and spend time over scores of paper writing pertaining to: observation in classrooms, lesson plan writing, standards research and incorporation, etc. The education program at FIU is a most rewarding opportunity for any education student in any state institution who seeks to acquire a teaching position within any school district. FIU and Miami-Dade Public Schools perform collaboratively in a most positive fashion to cator to the needs of aspiring educators; and provide more than adequate classroom participation and training to prepare education students for the "real-world" in teaching.

Casey

yes- no favorites- no sure how others study, but i feel smart there- students do participate- no- no- have to strictly follow my program- college of ed, masters degree- no- indifferent- in my area getting a job

Lindsay

Proffessors are probably the best thing about FIU. We have a diverse faculty because so many great proffessors are attracted to the international community of FIU. It is a large school with a small liberal arts feel. Most of my proffs have been extreemly passionate about what they teach. That means a lot coming from a Women's Studies Major because WOmen's Studies is a very interdisciplinary program and you get a taste of everything. My second major was English, great proffs in that department too. I did independent study and internships in both departments. FIU offers you the oportunity to get a very well rounded education, classes aren't always small but the proffs are always available.

Rory

I always wanted to attend a prestigious university, but health problems prevented me from doing so. Although I am an active member in the Honors College, I do not feel that FIU offers the academic environment that I desire. As an English major, one sterotype that circulates is that the English program is basically a joke. I would like to see professors brought in from other universities to give special lectures about the effect of fantasy in Oscar Wilde, or the contribution of Boethius to Chaucerian literature. These opportunities are not available to us, and as a student who hopes to one day become a professor, I sincerely wish they were.

Ari

Some of my professors know my name, especially my Honors College professors. My least favorite class is Statistics, my professor has an accent like "Borat." I really enjoy my Honors course. Students study frequently, the library is always full. Class participation is quite common. I believe FIU students have more intellectual conversations outside of class than inside. Students are not as competitive as students are in high school. My most unique class is "History of The Beatles." My major is Health-Science with a Pre-Physical Therapy Track. The education at FIU is for getting a job as well as learning for its own sake, it all depends on the professor and the major you select.

Jen

I have some amazing professors. Granted, I use ratemyprofessor.com religiously, but through word of mouth it's usually fairly easy to distinguish the outstanding professors. The students are interactive, and there are many discussions in my classes. I'm a political science major, and programs like Model UN that are offered to me have become invaluable in getting experience regarding my field. Just this Spring, FIU won Best Small Delegation at the Harvard National Model UN conference. But around here, excellence isn't a habit, it's a tradition. I feel challenged and engaged by the faculty at FIU and I've found that many of them try to be accessible outside of the classroom. I even have one professor who dedicates 2 days a week to coffee hours with students!

Meliza

Some of my professors know my name, like the ones I have taken for more than one semester. My favorite would be my women's novelist class because I love the novels and it's a small class were we discuss. My least favorite is math because I do not like math and its pure lecture. The library is always packed so I guess they study a lot. Yeah, especially since I am an English major, class participation is pretty big. Yeah, not all the time, but now with elections and stuff people tend to get into some heated debates. Yes, being part of the Honors College, I'd say you find some pretty competitive students. The most unique class was my approaches to literature class because we read all types of pieces from medieval to Hemingway and learned a lot about the common symbols behind each. My major and department area great. My professors are smart and helpful and my department keeps in contact with us. I got this internship through them. One of my professors has coffee hours but I cannot make it, so I do not. I think the requirements are fair, I wouldn't change anything. I think it's what you make of it. You can learn for its own sake or you can gear what you learn to find a job.
