George Washington University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Charlie

Jewish. Mostly from new jersey and long island.

Steve

The student body tends to click together depending on what brings them together. Most students come from affluent backgrounds and do not have toruble finding money to spend. College Democrats and College Republicans are the largest social groups on campus as most students tend to be very involved in politics.

Eric

upper-class

Seth

Fairly diverse but not much intermingling. Greek system is fairly isolated but the shit.

Rory

The student body is very socially polarized. There are the kids who go out all the time, who are not very active with campus life. There are also the kids who are active on campus, but socially they click together. I feel that the wealthy students for the most part flaunt it, and the non-wealthy resent it and are for the most part bitter.

Parker

The student body is relatively well rounded, with a plethora of student orgs and resources. The only piece that tends to stick out is the socio economic status of many of the students. Because most of the population is from outside of DC and because DC is so expencive to live in and operate a school in, there tends to be a type of natural selection that occurs in that realm. Other than that, the only other negative I can think of is a lack of school spirit, but that is to be expected in this type of environment. The student body is very politically active, with the best College Democrats and College Republicans on any campus.

Alex

Very diverse student body. Everyone can find his/her place with a little looking.

Scott

I feel like people at GW are either international students, smart kids who are here on scholarship, or rich kids from expensive private schools. Who can actually pay the tuition.

Shawn

The student body needs some reform. A good portion of students are here just to have fun and forget the importance of academics. The school needs more history and alumni to develop a better name for the university.

Craig

GW's student body is very diverse despite the claims that it's all spoiled rich kids from the north east. GW's students are the most politically active in the country and tend to lean towards the left. A lot of students are from the northeast but there are students from all over.

Zach

It is a pretty driven student boy. Most people I know have pretty lofty goals and school is actually important to most of them.

Catherine

There are so many different types of people at GW. Anyone that come here will find the people who they click with.

Ryan

not unified,

Max

GW is overall a very liberal student body. Many students are Jewish. Many are very rich. But these are all just generalisations. One of the most active group on campus is the College Republicans and there is stilll a large number of christians. Overall it is a very diverse and accepting student body.

Sarah

GW is very diverse but there are many many students from New Jersey and New York. A lot of students get dressed up to go to class and sometimes you can get weird looks for wearing sweatpants but the dress code is really up to you. There are no real dining halls but there are plenty of local haunts on campus which are almost entirely student-filled. We all go to the same places and have the same options but sometimes we'll venture out and go off campus or find places on GWorld dining that we don't usually frequent. Food is very very expensive though and having a kitchen / grocery store around is very useful.

Katie

Its more diverse than people think, but people mostly see the JAPs because they are the ones who go to the clubs.

Todd

The campus is far too liberal, almost forcing the liberal lifestyles on the other students. Other than that the school is extremely racially segregated. Also, the school is segregated by the size of daddy's wallet. The campus is full of people who think that they are extremely politically savvy because they live in DC but they are not. When you find that one person that is, its amazing and interesting because they know everything and are highly educated but its like finding a needle in a haystack.

Rebecca

There are a lot of Jewish people. GW is very gay friendly. There are a lot of people from up and down the east coast. A pretty signifigant amount of international students.

James

High percentage of gays, love 'em. Liberal. Wealth. Jappy bitches

Brendan

While GWU is a pretty diverse school, the majority of its population comes from the mid-Atlantic or New England. While pretty socio-economically homogeneous, I really enjoy GW's regional diversity. I've learned a great deal about the rest of America and the country's plethora of identities.

Meredith

There are a lot of rich kids and there are a lot of jewish kids. Not everyone is rich or jewish but many are. If you look closely and keep and open mind you can learn to love this place. There are so many different types of people here, it just takes a little while to find them.

Mark

There is no school spirit and the majority of the people don't care

Jacquelyn

Wealthy financial backgrounds from the North East.

Catherine

I think their is a wide range of different people that go to GW. And everyone and anyone will find people who are like them and could relate to them.

Ariel

Socioeconomically, most students are upper-middle class and very well-off. There is a large gay community on campus and a diverse religious one as well. Although many students are politically minded and active, its not necessarily my "thing" and I don't feel uncomfortable at all.

Paige

there are many groups of people here ranging from socioeconomic classes to races to religions. i don't think any student would feel out of place at GW as long as they are with people are open and willing to experience new things. there will always be those people at schools and universities that are too close-minded to understand that people in different groups as them are just as interesting and important. luckily, i feel that the student body at GW is composed mainly of students are are open-minded and willing to try new things. although there are several different socioeconomic classes here at GW, the higher classes are more prevalent, or at least appear so. this is simply due to the high tuition rates and do not determine the characteristics of the GW student body.

Parker

GW is SUPER accepting of EVERYONE. Seeing boys, girls, dogs, walking down the street holding hands does not get a second glance. I thought I was accepting of everyone before I cam here, but now I'm best friends with people who are gay, super religious, super not religious, etc, and we all hang out. The one thing about students here is that everyone is super involved. If you don't have an internship and three clubs you are president of, you might feel out of place. Everyone does SOMETHING, and it isn't all necessarily politically related.

Lauren

The student body is not nearly diverse enough for me, but somehow we have a palpable lack of community, which is upsetting. There is a lack of financial and socioeconomic diversity which is the most troubling. I do enjoy the prevalence of politically and internationally minded people, but I can imagine that if those topics were not important to me I would find that element of GW entirely overwhelming and irritating.

Ashleigh

Students dress up all the time. They are almost all very politically active. Different types of students definitely interact.

Lindsay

GW is super liberal and is accepting of all people. This school is EXTREMELY Jewish however. It does not cater to the Jewish community in any way there are just a lot of Jews.

harriet

Students are very politically aware... which can sometimes be intimidating to those who do not care so much about politics.

Steve

One of the main reasons I left New England to come to DC was because of how diverse GW is. You can find any type of student here, like students paying their way through school or a student who doesn't need to work a day in their lives. This results in a variety of groups on campus, so it all depends which you associate with. I have a lot of different types of friends, but that's my decision. Others just like to stick to their 3 best friends and don't really care about anybody else or what they think. Most students are from the East coast, but there are a lot of people from the West coast (mainly California). GW also has a high foreign percentage, so I have a lot of classes with people from other countries (ranging from England to Iraq to Korea to Argentina). GW is a VERY liberal school, but CR still has a strong presence as well. Once again, being in DC brings out the politician in everyone, which can be good and bad sometimes. The majority of students here are studying to see how and when they can make the most money possible. I'm in the business school, so there are a lot of finance majors who want to go into investment banking. We care about our success and futures because money is important to a lot of people here.

Thomas

Students are mostly affluent white kids from the Northeast Corridor. There is a very large and active Indian-American community. The black community is visible, but not that large. There is a huge gay male population, but the lesbians are more underground. Gay acceptance is the norm on campus. Political views are somewhat demanded of every student.

Harper

the students here at gw are great. People are so accepting and interesting it is frightnening. I also could not picture a more united or happy student body anywhere else.

Andy

A student who wants a quiet college campus would not do well here. This is a university where the student has to be proactive and make his or her college experience. There are some wealthy students here, but there are also students who have financial assistance as well.

Bill

The student body has a variety of different backgrounds. People come to GWU for different reasons, but I think that the main one is the unique atmosphere that GWU provides culturally in the heart of DC.

Tyler

Students are ok

Jack

Wealthy stuck up kids are always around. Dont come if you are looking to find a girlfriend unless you share the same size trust fund that she does.

Rob

The GW campus is very diverse, and all groups are not just tolerated, but welcomed for their unique viewpoints. Since everyone at GW is so intelligent about what they speak on, one can't help but listen to opposing viewpoints and consider and respect them, even if one chooses not to subscribe to them. The student body as a whole leans left, but since everyone is so intelligent about their politics, everyone really has their own set of views, and can't help but listen to, and gain an understanding of, the other side. The College Democrats and College Republicans often host joint events, such as election watch parties and debates. In morning classes, many people are unashamed to show up in pajamas, flip-flops and a baseball hat, but by mid-afternoon, most students have made an effort to dress themselves.

Ben

Very wealth and white. For the most part.

Ash

Diverse and active

Alex

Most students are from the Northeast (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts) and relatively well-off. There is also a large gay community at GW and a growing Greek Fraternity and Sorority system.

Tate

Very Diverse

Shawn

diverse

Robb

Jappy. bitches.

Phil

diverse

Charlie

There are so many different types of groups here, everyone can find their niche. We lean liberal, but the conservatives on this campus are very outspoken.

Bill

Very diverse, they love politics

Ash

The student body is diverse in many aspects, contrary to what many people say about GW being very Jewish, but GW is dervse in many other ways, especially political.

Angelica

The students at GW love to brag about where they are from, what their parents do, and what kind of cars they have parked in their 3 or 4 car garages at home. The demographic of GW students from the New York, New Jersey area, I have learned are most in love with doing this. It frankly is obnoxious. These are the same kids who wear collectively 400$ outfits to class daily, with purses of equal or more value hanging from their shoulder. WE have a very diverse school but you wouldnt know it. The different cultures here voluntarily seclude themselves from one another. I dont think it works adversely in any way, but it like self segregation at its finest. The students are very politically engaged, i think majority are left wing thinkers, but it probably is just a bit more than the many right winged students I know.
