Hofstra University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Tammy

The students on campus are very open minded. The students here are very diverse and no one finds it odd. There are groups, but its not based on race or religion. Students tend to hang out more with people who have similar majors or are in similar clubs, but they aren't objective to seeing other people. A lot of the students here are from Long Island or New York in general but then there are also people from places like Ohio (me for example) and California and Oregon and Colorado, Hofstra students come from all over the place. The students here all have their own passion; some are very active in the arts, some are very active in politics, and some are just passionate about their major. There really is a place for everyone on campus.

Christine

There are about a billion socio-cultural groups and clubs on campus. You're definitely going to find a niche where you fit in. Although these certain clubs do exist, don't be surprised if certain prejudices occur, because I've seen it happen. Most students here are either politically left of center, or don't care about politics at all. Hofstra is similar to a high school, where you'll find different groups of people where you can fit in, but there's little interaction between the groups.

John

I find the body to be very diverse. Almost 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the study body is from out of state. Also i feel that there is greater diversity on this campus than there are on other campuses. I work with several members of the LGBT community, they're really cool doods.

Lindsey

I do not particularly enjoy a majority of the students. Many, many are self-involved. I find it especially disheartening that students do not partake in the opportunities that Hofstra provides via guest speakers (in a wide variety of topics). A majority of the audience is always 65 plus.

Lorie

The students here are all very different; there is an abundance of diversity. There is always somewhere for someone to fit in. Everyone here is also very open to others opinions and ways of life.

Brianna

Uggs and stretchy pants. Gag me. I notice that the most, simply because you tend to notice the things you hate over the things you have no opinion over. I live in a Chem bubble, so I rarely eat in the student center enough to know the 4 tables or the political views. I don't like politics so I really don't care. People here are generally nice, but spoiled.

Matthew

I hear name calling a lot on campus.

Samantha

Everyone loves each other. Seriously. We're a big happy 8,000 undergraduate student family.

Bevan

Gays are awesome! Socially awkward people would feel out of place

Mary

Alot of Hofstra Students come from Long Island, but also alot of my friends are from New England, California, and New Jersey

Jessica

The students here at hofstra all dress similarly but with their own sense. Not everyone is dressed in preppy clothing, and there are always those who stick out with bright orange pants, or big hair or tie dye. Everyone adds to the character.

linda

everyone here is different, there is no chance that someone can come here and not fit in somewhere

Ryan

A majority of the student population is from Long Island, and most of those students fit the stereotype mentioned above. I myself, being from out of state, have found that I am not really very good friends with anyone from Long Island, and I think it is because they are in their own world. Because I come from a different place they do not know how to relate to someone who works for them self and has to survive without Daddy's wallet all the time like I do. My closets friends are all from out of state, and that could be because we have something in common or because we are just from a different breed from those students who come from the Island

Ash

Most of the students at Hofstra are from the New York area or New England, but a surprising amount are from further away. I've met more people from California than I would have expected, and there are also quite a few international students.

Rory

there are lots of diverse groups on campus. i have friends in many groups- LGBT, christian groups, dance teams, drama programs, etc. it's a nice mix of students

Torry

The student body is really diverse and you learn a lot from your classmates and peers even outside the classroom. You really are introduced to different perspectives, sometimes without even realizing it. It makes college exciting because you never know what or whom you'll bump into the next day.

kelly

as long as you can find your niche, you'll be fine. there are lots of diverse groups, you just have to seek them out.

John

So Sweet.

Keith

The school sort of advertises how diverse the student body is; however, I have yet to really discover that diversity. The majority of kids I meet are just a short drive from campus (between 30min to 2 hours). Many seem to be well off as far as financial backgrounds go. The school is incredibly expensive and the cost is only rising.

barbara

kids have their own cliques here, like everywhere. athletes, "party" girls and boys, "academics", drama kids, etc.

Ben

there are all types of students here, u run into all forms of diversity

Brian

The student body is very diverse. The one negative is that almost half of the students are commuters. This sometimes takes aways from activities that occur on campus.

Joanne

everyone is real chill with everyone else

Bob

I feel like Hofstra's student body keeps to itself in a way. Everyone has their own group and they stay with them...the athletes, greeks, hippies, etc. I believe that wealthy financial backgrounds are most prevalent and some students are politically aware, but not as much as other schools. Also, considering our Gay Straight Alliance is inactive, I feel as if the gay and lesbian population do not necessarily have an outlet as other groups do.

Lindsey

Not a huge fan of the student body.

Kelly

Diverse, active, dynamic, sometimes a little crazy, pick a buzzword for college students and we've got it. I can't think of anyone that couldn't find something or someone they really related to and could get involved with here. College is probably 65{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} what you put into it, and the students put a LOT into school. We have 140 clubs and organizations, with an incredibly active Student Government (real debates and elections etc). Plus, with the combination of local and not-so-local students, we get a really great mix of kids.

Nicole

A lot of people are really activist on campus, which is nice to see as opposed to everyone being apathetic.

Jill

There's a really active GSA on campus, which makes it a lot more comfortable for LGBT students to be on campus. I don't think that any type of student would feel out of place on Hofstra's campus because there are so many different types of clubs and people. There's something for everyone.

Chris

I am an asian american, and have experienced a few instances of racism. There is much segregation, and cultures tend to stick together. In a dining hall environment, there would be the frat/sorority people at one, athletes at another, drama kids at one, and everyone else at another. Mostly all students at Hofstra are of wealthy families.

Gabe

The worst part about the student body is that there are so many people from Long Island. I knew this was a commuter school when I applied, but I didn't realize that I wouldn't get along with the Long Islanders. There are a few people from Long Island that I met and liked. Largely, though, I find that I have little in common with the commuters. I'm from California, and my best friends are from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Colorado, and New York City. There are still enough people not from Long Island to get along with. I'm glad, because otherwise I would have a real tough time here.

joanne

students wear a variety of things to class-- from sweatpants to t-shirts and jeans, to designer duds (especially Uggs), and lots of leggings (unforunately).

Melissa

despite the stereotypes, hofstra's quite diverse. i feel like there's a little spot for everyone. there are a lot of commuters, though, which i think may take away from a larger sense of community that you may see on other campuses. students mostly don't seem politically knowledgeable and are generally upper-middle class and wealthy.

Dawson

everyone here is for the most part very open to different views and personal life styles. it does get click-y with greek life, but no one is purposely ostracized because they arent in a certain group.

Tina

There are definitely different parts of the student body. I don't interact with greek life or stereotypical long island kids at all because I can't relate to them in any way. I do however have a great variety of friends of what I consider normal students who all have different interests and are on different teams.

Ryan

Student body is incredibly diverse; unfortunately you do not really get to experience the diversity because almost every ethnic group stays in its own little clique. There are lots of rich Long Islanders, and then lots of students in tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Most of the students are from the Tristate area, the East Coast in general, Pennsylvania, and California. there are some extremely active students who are incredibly driven, but the majority do not care. Professors are overall very liberal; Students are mixed between liberal and too caught up in themselves to care.

Whitney

There are all sorts of groups for everyone, even frats and sororities. It's a pretty casual campus that everyone can find something to do and somewhere to belong. Students are fairly aware politically and usually more left leaning.

Sarah

Pretty diverse, much more so then I thought it would be. Upper class income kids are still the most common, but that probably has to do with the price of tuition

Shawn

Lots of groups including frats and sororities. Mostly left leaning school.

Mike

Certainly diverse. I don't think anyone would feel out of place here

Jacob

the student body seems separated into some cliques like H.S. but there is no racial, sexual, anything else issues i dont think...it has good diversity and students from all over.... its big for a private school but its a good size for me.

Alex

I think all groups are accepted well. There are groups and organizations for about everyone, either that or some sort of speaker or rally or something of the sort. This includes political rallies and lectures. There are groups that tend to hang out, but mostly the fraternities and sororities. Otherwise, the groups are fairly wide. Most students are left in terms of politics and social issues.

Simon

i believe that the student body is adequately diverse and allows you to find many friend many social and racial backgrounds

Devin

The students are all very nice and all different students interact. Nobody really seems to care about the future and everybody is just worried about the next exam or essay they have to get done.

Matt

The student body is what you make it. There are so many different people here and different clubs and groups that you can find anything you want. Students come from all over, half are from Long Island and the other half are from all around the country. I think there is a big gap between commuters and residents.

Erin

Hofstra has a group for everyone. While we used to be a commuter school, the residential population is building and there is so much to do on campus. There are clubs for everything from politics to sports to music to knitting! What's nice about all of these clubs though is that they put on programs that anyone at the university can attend.

Jamie

Many of the students at Hofstra are from well to do families and backgrounds. People who are from lower SES backgrounds may feel out of place. There isn't alot of diversity. Mostly white, some black. Smattering of asians, etc. Many Jewish students and an active Jewish community (I don't know, but it looks like). Hofstra Hillell does alot, or seems to have alot of activities. Alot of students wear sweatpants and leisure suits, alot of flip flops and uggs, girls carry designer bags. Some students hardly dress for school (show up in pajamas) and others dress up. Often you will see people wearing jackets with their greek sorority/fraternity names on them. Alot of the students are from NY, in and around. Alot of students are from Long Island. People don't seem to be so politically aware or active. Students do seem concerned with making money. Strange thing at Hofstra are parents at the bookstore buying their children's books. I never saw that until I came to Hofstra.

Alexandra

I have good friends, unfortunately they're the last of the good people at this godforsaken institution.

Elana

I wear a bathing suit to my scuba class. Otherwise I usually wear jeans and a t-shirt and in the winter i wear a jacket.

Joe

The faculty does not interact with the students outside of classes.

Alana

I love gay people, they are fun!
