Hofstra University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Whitney

Eh, sort of.

Sarah

There are some of these on campus, but the majority of us are not

Shawn

For the most part.

Mike

Nopee.

Jacob

mostly. my unspoken pre-judgements have been quite accurate after listening to certain people speak to me or other people. things dont get fixed, although we pay too much money, and the food services are ridiculous... so yeah, mostly they are true.

Alex

On occassion.

Simon

no

Devin

in some cases this is extraordinarily accurate but in others such as myself and my close circle of friends this isn't the case.

Matt

Some what, stereotypes have to come from somewher, but they don't cover anyone.

Erin

No. There are a ton of students here from all over the country and around the world. There are students of all types as well!

Jamie

Yes, for the most part. There are exceptions, there are good people, but for the most part it's true.

Alexandra

Yes.

Elana

Like any other college, Hofstra is a party school if you want it to be, there are always parties going on, but they aren't so overpowering on campus that if you don't want to go, there's no pressure. As for the Long Island girl, there are some that fit this stereotype, but most of the people that you meet are "normal" and have earned their spot on campus.

Joe

Not usually... unless I need a good grade. ;)

Alana

Yes!

Chris

Sometimes

Ryan

nope. not for most.

Joe

Yes... some of the time. I would hope not everyone here is an idiot.

Reese

not exactly... just dont like walking to their building, socially distracted, curious?, more metro than most of the country? people are pretty cool and there are PLENTY of people who dont 'fit the mold'

Erin

Not for everyone.

Beth

sometimes

Katy

I think, as with many stereotypes, that some of the students behave in the ways listed above, and that some do not.

Laura

no

MiRaNDa

Ding Ding Ding...although, there are definitely diverse groups that have ntohing to do with these people.

Ben

Sometimes. Not all of us, though. Me included.

Naomi

While there are many people who fit that description, there definitely is a larger part of the student body that does not.

Steve

Not really, most of the people I know come from a variety of religious and economic backgrounds and none of them have STDs

Ash

Yes and no, just like the real world, some people live up to the stereotypes but most do not

Alexis

There are a lot of people who fit the appearance stereotypes. And a lot of lazy and dumb people as well. So I guess yes.

Mike

Some are a bunch of flashy, spoiled Long Island kids. But more than 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the undergrads are from outside NY State. Most of us are perfectly normal. Even the LI kids are normal. It's merely a stereotype.

Annie

I would say that the stereotypes about the students aren't accurate at all. Guidos and typical Long Island girls make up a very small percentage of people on campus and most of them are commuters anyway, so they're seen much less. I think that Hofstra has a very diverse campus of students. The Hofstra run-around is probably true for some. I've never experienced it for myself, but others close to me have.

Laura

for the most part, yes

Jo

the diseases are false. recent studies show that the reports indicate we're clean... as far as the "hofstra red." the student accusations are true.

Nicole

Pretty much. There are a few bright stars among the sour apples, however.

Maryann

Some people are like that, but certainly not all.

Maureen

I feel that this can happen on any college campus. Especially since I am a commuter I have never attended any parties on campus or gone to the bars near by so I haven't noticed why this stereotype exists.

Charlie

Mostly- yes.

Tristan

Girls do dress nicely but some don't - i've been on college campuses way more preppy than hofstra. Some people are stuck up but some are not. Its a very diverse place. There are a ton of different people.

Nicole

Every stereo-type can hold true for someone, but Hofstra's stereotype isn't accurate on the whole. I'm an athiest, poor, intelligent, and a psych major and have found an amazing niche in the honors college at hofstra. And all those girls that are pin-pointed as 'jappy and bitchy' are pretty nice if you get to know them.

Parker

i have found that i encountered many "long island girls" who seem to promote that view, although they might actually be very intelligent

Abigail

Possibly

Harper

There are always activities going on, and there is just so much to do on campus. I find it a very useful and entertaining environment.

Andrea

Most of them are

Parker

As far as my experience goes, not at all. Most of my interactions have been with other music majors, but almost everyone I have met has been smart, busy, hardworking, and interesting. If you can find your niche at Hofstra (and it's not too hard to do... the school isn't that big), you'll find some great people who know what they want out of life. The only people who really complain about the other students are those who seem to make a concious effort to be unhappy, though I suppose Long Island might take some getting used to if you're from out of state. As far as the STDs go, I have a boyfriend, so I really wouldn't know.

Ainsley

Hofstra is overpriced.

Brandon

As with any community the stereotype is true to a degree. However this is not true to the extent of which this generalization has been made. Yes these type of people are represented at Hofstra, but I have found Hofstra to be extremely articulate, professional, and extremely diverse culturally as well and socially.

Caitie

No, Hofstra is not as easy to get into. The classes are not all easy, many of the professors really challenge students. It seems like a lot of the school is from Long Island, but it is getting less and less. Many of my classes have less than 1/2 of the students from New York. If you want to party you can, but I have found plenty of people who dont

Kelsey

Definately not.

Sarah

There are some students like this on campus, but there is also a large amount of normal every day, nice people

April

mostly yes, but there are some of us that work for a living :)
