Hofstra University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Shawn

Lots of activities and plays. Partying but not the only thing to do. City nearby.

Mike

Social life is fun. No pressure. Just do what you want. Many clubs seem to have a lot of trouble gaining recognition or support though, maybe because this is such a big commuter school.

Jacob

a lot of things to do...though many people dont take those opportunities... parties on and off campus... clubs galore... dorm halls are friendly and diverse... its always just a matter if students take the initiative to do something....

Alex

There are so many groups on campus. I'm part of the Hofstra Film Club, but not very active. But it is a good group if you are interested in film making. The campus always has something going on, giving events from dances to speakers almost every day. There are also several plays a year. People are fairly friendly so leaving the door open for people in the hall to stop by can be common. Thanks to the Honors college and the dorms and activities, I met my friends. Every weekend there are parties, but plenty of other things to do. Off campus, there are theatres and the mall and the NYC to go to.

Simon

i am involved with phi delta epsilon and help darfur now. i believe hofstra has many well organized groups and groupd that can fit any personality.

Devin

I met my closest friends from my dorm and from orientation. Most of the events around campus are pretty popular for the most part and being awake at 2am either means you're drunk, working, or writing a paper for the next day. Saturday nights either involve working, or hanging out with friends. Drinking hasn't happened in a while because i've been working so much.

Matt

There is always a ton to do on and around Hofstra. The city is also only a 40 minute train ride away. If someone says there is nothing to do on a Friday or Saturday, or any night of the week really, they are just lazy and aren't looking. Hofstra has a great mix of academic events and nightlife events.

Erin

The most active campus organization I am in the the Residential Student Association. We plam programs for all residents on campus. This year we held Hofstra's first student wide formal. We also had a movie night outside on our intramural field and brought in a hypnotist to raise money for FOP. Hofstra is also holding a Relay For Life event on campus this year. The students have become very active in fundraising for a variety of causes.

Jamie

There are alot of greek societies. Students in dorms mostly do not leave the door open (it's not allowed). I wouldn't know about athletic events, but guest speakers and events usually don't have a high turnout. More people are likely to show up if there is food. It seems students like to go out drinking and to bars and parties. Fraternities and sororities seem common. There are sometimes movies shown on campus on weekends. One bus on Sundays takes you to the mall and picks you up from the mall at a certain time. Off campus, people probably drink. There are good groups on campus too that like to participate in volunteer work, fundraising, spreading awareness, etc.

Alexandra

What social life?

Elana

I am usually awake at 2AM on a Tuesday writing a paper for my Wednesday morning class. Most of my friends are also in this class writing the same paper so we spend a lot of time complaining about it, it's a bonding experience though. Luckily, I have a big gap in my day on Wednesday so I can nap after class.

Joe

Some teachers help out with social events.

Alana

Help Darfur Now is a national organization that brings awareness about the genocide in Darfur

Chris

I enjoy activities on campus that do not include the Long Island girls.

Ryan

drama dept!! boo greeks! nobody goes to athletic events. everyone goes to concerts.

Joe

There are a lot of events every night on campus. It's kinda crazy sometimes.

Reese

if you're bored its because you're uncreative.

Erin

There really is no club that is any more popular than another. Hofstra concerts may be, because they put on free movies and cheap concerts. We are not allowed to have our doors open because it's a fire hazard, but we all hang out in the building's lounge together. Athletic events and guest speakers and theatre are very popular. I met my closest friends at Orientation. If I'm awake at am on a Tuesday, I am most likely just hanging out. People party mostly on the weekends. Frats and Sororities are on campus, but not hat important.

Katy

Again, social life is different for a music major than for a lot of other majors. Drama/dance majors have a similar schedule to music majors. We are always practicing or rehearsing or composing or going to music dep't concerts to support our friends and classmates. However, from what I've seen, the more popular social scene involves Greek life, parties, and sports (particularly basketball).

Laura

caberet is good. you can stay busy at all hours if you want- but there are plenty of kids only up at 2am if they have a paper

MiRaNDa

There are tons of great activities, you just have to check Facebook o find out about them, or pick up a flyer around campus.

Ben

Frat life is fairly big here, but there are no frat houses on campus (awesome!). People party fairly regularly on the weekends, and sometimes during the week, but not too much. Dizzys seems to be a pretty popular place on Wednesdays. Haven't been, myself.

Naomi

My dorm is really social and we have a great community here so there's always something going on. Also, the city is right here so it's easy to find something to do if you've got free time

Steve

Hofstra is a great place to be, we have a really strong community here and its in a great location. The town of Hempstead is not particularly great but the surrounding towns are nice and there is plenty of shopping to be done close by. Its close to a train station so NYC is very accessible. There are some great yearly events like music festivals, formals, barbeque's, and charity events etc. There is always something to do on campus because we have so many clubs, most of which are actively contributing to our student life.

Alexis

Basically people party four days a week, at least. It's a big party environment, since so many bars are within walking distance. Also a bunch of off-campus houses are right in the middle of the bar section as well. Really just everything has to do with drinking.

Mike

WRHU. The place is incredible. We have more fun there than I've ever experienced. Every time an incoming student asks me what to get involved in -- even if they're not a communications major -- I say the radio station. It can help anyone, regardless of career path.

Annie

Greek life is huge if you're in Greek life. If you're not, it's not. Same with athletes. Hofstra is known for its bars across the street, which are attended by many and if you've been here for a year and never been, that's pretty shocking. Honors College has a lot of perks to it; they're always sending kids to free shows/sports events/etc. And there are free movies in the Student Center every weekend, which is great. We have a lot of events going on here, it's just a matter of taking advantage. Drinking is big, but it doesn't have to be. There are definitely those groups that never do it and groups that don't do it all the time. The city is so close and while it's expensive, it's a great asset to have close by.

Laura

i think social life is pretty average. i am not the party goer type to get drunk. i am perfectly happy hanging out in someones dorm room. in almost every other dorm i have been into everyone is really friendly on the floor and always leave their doors open, and that is one thing i wish we had on my floor. the people are hardly ever here and no one ever leaves their doors open. frats and sororities are very big at hofstra and they take homecoming and greek week really seriously. i am not a fan of soriorities and i would never join one. i need my space i couldnt be with the same people and i dont want to get drunk every weekend. thats just not me. there are a lot of shows on campus and i do go to them. i think they are always pretty good. we recently had comedians and they were hysterical. this weekend we just played games and laughed and talked a lot in my friends dorm till 2 in the morning and then i just hung out with another friend till midnight. neither night consisted of any drinking and getting drunk. off campus we usually go to the mall or out to dinner

Jo

greek life seems to be trying to take over campus. it seems as though they think they are at the top of the world and they think they're the shit. i like being involved in extra cirricular activites and clubs, because that's how i meet some friends and again obtain exceptionally experiences. i love leaving my dorm room door open while i'm in there during the day, with or without my roomate. we like the cross wind, even in the winter; it just seems to bring out the friendly side of everyone.

Jacob

I'm not in a school organization or club, but most clubs are easy to access because they have groups on Facebook. One thing that I especially love about being in Honors College is that they occasionally organize trips into New York City to see Broadway musicals or museums, and at least three times a week there are smaller activities or dinners in the Honors dorm lounges.

Maureen

My social life takes place off campus since I don't dorm here. I love my classes very much but besides that I feel like an outsider when it comes to other social activities.

Tristan

There are many events on at Hofstra. i get e-mails all the time. The events are big too. Well known authors, playwrights people in the buisness come talk to us. i did not meet any class friends at Hofstra. Its a big place, i commute, i made this desicion but its still kind of sad that I don't have special friends from college. I also have met nobody I would want to date. Guys stay to themselves or the to girls they know. They also tend to hang with slutty girls. I do not go to parties but I hear talk - people drink a lot. Its not my scene but it is college

Parker

u r not allowed to leave your doors open in certain dorms

Abigail

Student in their dorms usually leave their doors open in effort to get to know the people that live on their floor. Athletic events are fairly popular, I feel the most popular sporting events are football, soccer, basketball and lacrosse. Sports teams generally set a good example to college kids and usually dont party. All the sports teams are close knit, for example I am on the women's cross country team and we are very close.

Harper

There are tons to do on campus! There are always clubs and activities going on. There are free movies, events, and social gatherings. There is never a shortage of things to do. I really love Hofstra for that. I am a person who often gets invovled with extracurricular activity, and I am trying to get into activities on campus. I've joined a few clubs, been to a few cultural shows. I have also been to several civic events where guest speakers come and speak about a wide variety of topics. Once you get involved in campus activities, you start to meet new people. It is a great feeling.

Jo

Greek life at Hofstra is popular, but it doesn't mean you won't have any fun if you don't join. There are over 150 clubs on campus which means no matter what you like to do you can find it on campus. Hofstra doesn't have it, then start it. The school also encourages students to start new clubs to provide activities for all its students. Like at any other college, Hofstra students know how to have a good time and on any given night you can find a party going on somewhere. Our close proximity to NYC means we have access to one of the worlds greatest cities and all of the fun that it offers. We love our basketball team, even in the years when they aren't playing well, and we stand together as fans cheering on our team no matter what! They don't call us the "Pride" for no reason. The school aslso does a lot to being interesting speakers to campus, whether it's former US President Bill Clinton to Jilliam Michaels the fitness trainer from The Biggest Loser.

Caitie

The activities on campus leave something to be desired. They have a lot, but meeting times always overlap so it is hard to be uber involved. There is a lot of Greek life on campus, but if you aren't into that you can find stuff to get involved in, just expect a lot of people to ignore you doing rushing. The weekends at hofstra are dead, most people go home, so if you want to do things you go into NYC

Kelsey

Hofsta is schedualed to host the presidential debates in the fall of 2008. Everyone's super excited and hopes to be one of the lucky few to obtain a ticket to the event.

April

Most people drink at the bar down the road or play beer pong in their room. Greek life is big on campus. I met my closest friends through my fraternity and through working as a Resident Assistant. My social activities include going out to eat, movies, and very minimal drinking. Hofstra actually shows good movies on Saturday nights for free.

Rich

Social life is what you make of it. Pick out the right friends and you can have a great time. Like anywhere else.

kristy

greek life is the biggest, student government is big too. if im awake at 2 am on a tuesday im probably reading in bed or watching tv.

Carson

people party a lot. 2am on a tuesday, im talking online or hanging in the lounge with my friends. or frantically trying to finish something for c&e the next morning. saturday night without drinking...hmm...in the city, going to a movie, or perhaps some event on campus. but usually getting drunk in the dorm.

Mary-Kate

People mostly party wednesday-saturday night. A lot of people leave their doors opened, and its good to invite everyone in your building to party in your room. On the weekends if you dont want to drink then you could go to the city and find something to do, but everyone mostly just drinks. Sporting events aren't really that popular, they try to give away free stuff to get students to go. Basketball games are probably the most popular event. Frats/Sororities are very important, many students are involved, and if you are involved you only hang out with others in greek life. It is very clicky.

Anna

Umm...frats and sororities are big here. Lots of artsie clubs are big. Also groups and organizations in your major is what most people get into. Students try to leave their dorm rooms open but alot of buildings have slam locsk and you will get fined for that. Plus stealing is big - which is why they have those fines - so you are told to lock your door even when just going to the bathroom in the hall. Personally, most people leave their doors open or cracked when they are in their room...although it depends on the floor (dunno why). Athletic events can be big or small - Rugby and Basketball are huge here. We get occassional guest speakers that bring out large crowds although not usually. We have a great communications department so we get hooked up with great shows. For $5 we had shows to see Mitch Hedgberg, The Roots, Lewis Black, and alot of other great people. So...that was great. The dating scene is mostly found in a blacked out portion of your memory when you were at the bar. I met my closest friends through classes, living on the same floor, and through my closest friends. If I'm awake at 2 am...I'm probably smoking pot, drinking, studying, writing some kind of paper or something, watching tv trying to fall asleep, or playing guitar hero. Traditions? Well...Happy Hour every friday! Then there are the frat things at certain times of year. 4/20 is big, mardi gras, the usual ones I guess. I know people who party 24/7, people who party hard on the weekends, and people who never party. It depends on what you want to do. Frats and the whole greek thing is big but its not necessary. Saturday night not drinking usually involved getting high. Or studying. Off campus is where the bars are...plus the biggest mall in Long Island is 10 minutes away. Lots of great places to eat around here...although expensive.

Tara

I am a recent transfer and commuter, so most of this question does not apply to me. Sporting events are highly popular for the most part, and guest speakers and Hofstra theater and performing arts get their fair share of recognition too. I'm pretty sure the bar nights at Hofstra are Tuesday, Thursday and the weekends. Greek life exists at Hofstra but is not as big as other schools.

Quinn

Men's basketball is the most popular sport on campus. Most people attend the games and sit in "The Lion's Den." A frequent saying at games, "If you can't see, stand up." If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am writing a paper or studying for a big test, otherwise, I am definitely sleeping!
