Hofstra University Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Ryan

The faculty is extremely overqualified for the students. In other words, the professors are wonderful, and it's unfortunate that they do not have equally as enthusiastic students. Especially in the arts, most of the professors practice in Manhattan but teach at Hofstra. Profs are also incredibly reliable at returning emails and making you feel important and like not another face in the crowd.

Whitney

Classes are pretty small and participation heavy. Teachers know you. Classes help to get you ready for a job but also are good learning experiences. Requirements aren't ridiculous.

Sarah

I love all my professors, especially all those in connection with the dance department. All the classes i've had are relatively small (30 or less) and the teachers learn your names, as long as you come on a relatively frequent basis. My professors have been great at assisting me both with class and other issues.

Shawn

Good class sizes and friendly teachers. Requirements not too hard but challenging.

Mike

Many professors are great, others aren't so good. I feel like that is commonplace of any college. I have learned some incredible stuff in the three years I've been here, and I will remember everything I've learned and will apply it towards the rest of my life.

Jacob

Its all over the map...some teachers are good and hard...some are irrational... some are easy...some students arent college level students, some students are really intelligent... it has a wide range....

Alex

The classes are pretty small, about 25 students a class. The proffesors tend to learn you and because the classes are small, they are often discussion classes. The ideas often travel outside of class too. The school is competitive with a certain group. Like all colleges though, there are those who really really care and those who don't at all, with most right in the middle. The Communications department is pretty good, offering a lot of classes and good advisement. The requirements are not unreasonable but challenging, offering all you need to know for the fields while offering enough time just for learning.

Simon

the academics are very good. i am in te biochemistry department and i believe the subjects required for the degree are very related to the field and taught by very knowledgeable professors.

Devin

I like the academics here. The professors are all very helpful and personal with students. Class participation is really common in some classes but others are merely lecture and take notes.

Matt

I love the academics here, well mostly. I am forced to take classes that I don't really care about and that takes away from time other classes that I would like to take. All of my proffessors, well at least the ones in my major know my name and keep up with my personal life to a degree, it is nice.

Erin

Class sizes here are small. My freshman year I had one class of six students and one class of eight! All of my professors know my name and Ive gotten to know a lot of the students in my classes well also. Technology here is one of my favorite things about the classrooms. All the classes have smart boards or smart computers with projection screens. I love that professors take advantage of that

Jamie

Professors may know your name, alot of the classes are small. The larger classes don't really go over 100 students. Conversations around campus are usually not very intellectual. Students can be competitive but it depends on where you are. The psychology department is very good at Hofstra, but in my opinion, the hard sciences are weaker. The labs are not nicely equipped. I used better, more expensive and reliable equipment in regular lab at other schools and at Hofstra, had crappy pipette pumps, alot of missing tops and odds and ends, things that didn't work. Academic requirements are pretty much the same as anywhere. Hofstra encourages students to go for higher education (atleast in my major). Hofstra gives more than some schools with things like AP credits and credits for classes from other schools. The psychology department is very good and supportive for the most part. There is also a good graduate program at Hofstra, unfortunately they rarely accept their own students and they tell you so. It's kind of depressing. There is tutoring available but it takes a very long time to set up. Sometimes they also defer you to "group" tutoring saying, there are hours for homework help. Forget individual tutoring, just go to those. That isn't so helpful if you need the individual attention.

Alexandra

Listen, the English department rocks, but the Art History department can blow me.

Elana

One thing I really like about being in Honors College is that you are able to get to know professors over free food. During their office hours, that happen to be in my dorm, we are able to ask questions about anything, ranging from math problems to where to get the best tacos in New York. Also, going to a teacher's office hours is a great way to know a teacher, and really helps raising your grade in their class because they know you are making an effort to do well in their class.

Joe

The teachers are hard, but I learn a lot.

Alana

The teachers are great, and very smart

Chris

The Long Island girls are very dumb and make classes difficult.

Ryan

yes. i love my teachers, except dudek. and vincent brown.

Joe

I love the Art department. Once I've had a class the teachers know who I am and appreciate my work.

Reese

professors are generally amazing and administrators, if they think you are genuine in your efforts, are extremely helpful. classes range from 'meh' to phenomenal.

Erin

All of my professors are good with knowing everyone's name and taking an interest in them beyond lecturing at them. Students study when necessary, and class participation is encouraged. My favorite class right now is English, because my teacher is awesome and the discussions are great. My least favorite class was the English class I had last semseter. It was just plain terrible.

Beth

Some professors are very involved and are sure to know each student while others don't even both to call roll.

Katy

Because I'm a music major, my situation is a little different than other majors in larger departments. I most definitely know all of my professors names, and they all know mine. My classes are generally very small, and I have each of my professors for at least two or three semesters. Also, the students are usually the same in each of my classes. There is always student participation, and students are always having intelligent conversations about music outside of class. This was not so in the general education courses I took, but I can't really speak for other majors.

Laura

class participation varies from class to class. i really like the poli sci classes offered

MiRaNDa

Classes are the perfect size, which allows you to get to know everyone in your class and your professor. Honors college has awesome classes for first year students, including a supportive faculty to guide you through. As some kids are stupid air heads, and in my opinion got into this school for their millions and not their neurons, becoming the teachers favorite just takes charm, spark notes, and a little bit of clever wit.

Ben

Classes seem to be pretty good. I'm in the honors college program and there is a required course that you have to take for your first two semesters. It's painful, but it knocks a whole lot of credits out of the way, and you do not have to take a lit course. I don't really spend time with teachers outside of class, but there are always opportunities to, so I suppose that's good. I'm not crazy about Hofstra's requirements, but that's probably because I don't have a major yet.

Naomi

As a dance major, my classes are mostly with the same people all the time and the professors really get to know you. When you step outside that though and are in a distribution course, you can end up with the bottom of the barrel so to speak. I feel like professors in these classes are much harsher on students and determined to trip us up instead of teach (probably because few students actually have an interest in what they're teaching), Other than that though the classes have been amazing, and I've really enjoyed them

Steve

Most classes are small, so0 students get to know their teachers and individualized help is available. As a student body, we are generally academically motivated and I see a lot of competition in Honors College. The career center is constantly providing internship and job opportunities. The requirements to graduate and those for specific majors are sufficient but not overly difficult. As a psychology major, I can complete my degree with only ten classes, but the non-into level classes I expect to be challenging. Honors college has been a great experience academically. I've been exposed to a variety of material that I never would have been able to take on in other classes.

Alexis

Academics at Hofstra are a joke. Even the Honors College kids, who think they're the smartest kids ever, are actually quite stupid. HOWEVER. I can't say enough good things about the drama and dance faculty. They go above and beyond. They are AWESOME.

Mike

Absolutely they know our names. The classes are small, so we get to actually interact with the professors. I've been here two years, and I've never taken that "typical college class" with 300 other kids, and you just fade in. It's not like that here. We are all able to truly get to know the professors, and actually learn, not just regurgitate information. Also, the Honors College is phenomenal. They do a great job of making sure that the Honors Curriculum is legitimate, and truly making it an Honors program. There are no cake-walks. But it's an Honors program--it shouldn't be.

Annie

I love my major and I would recommend Creative Writing to anyone interested. In my four years, I've never had a professor who does not know my name, both in and out of my major/minor. I speak with a lot of my Creative Writing professors outside of class. The best class I ever took was an Honors Seminar. It was called "Debating Darwin" and it really made me look at my religion and my beliefs, which is something I'm glad I did. I talked with my professor several times about how I was feeling and he was so open to everything I had to say and I came out of that class with stronger beliefs. In regards to Honors College, I'm really glad I decided to join because it allows you to take classes not offered otherwise. Though Hofstra does offer a huge array of classes - anything from the History of Baseball to Yoga to AVF to PR.

Laura

i think that the professors i have had so far have been great. they are always there to help and extremely understanding. i had one professor however that was not so great. i hated my computer science class and never will i ever take another computer science class at hofstra. i didnt think the class or professor were good. i would never reccomend that class but besides that all of my others are great. i love my english professor that i even took him second semester as well. the one thing about classes, is you dont really make friends in classes because everyone is in and out so you make friends outside of class. whenever i need help from a professor i go to office hours where they are always willing to help.

Jo

Generally professors know my name personally. However, there's always the large boring lecture class that everone else is taking where the professor just passes around a sign in sheet while he/she speaks throughout the whole time period of class. i can't stand that. our average class size is small so that the students and professors can get a good understanding of one another and ultimately everyone walks out with a good experience.

Nicole

If you stand out in class, your professors will be impressed with you and take the time to let you know. They will usually know your name even if you don't stand out in class, but if you do they will take more time to get to know you. I've had professors offer to write me recommendation letters without even having to ask. This is the best thing about Hofstra. I sincerely doubt that most Hofstra students have intellectual discussions outside of class or that they would even know what one is. They would usually be gossiping or talking about "The Hills" or something - not politics, literature, or art. Obviously there are some students who definitely do this regularly, but not the overall student body. One very unfortunate thing about Hofstra is that literature classes are part of the core curriculum, which means that English majors can never hope to be in high level classes composed only of English majors. Thus, people who have no interest in reading or contributing to class simply register for the class and severely take away from class discussion. Professors even feel as if they have to dumb down their lessons. I feel as if most people are at Hofstra in hopes of eventually just getting a job rather than learning for its own sake. People don't seem to take anything important away from classes that are part of the core, meant to influence how they see the world around them.

Maryann

Classes are what you make of them. It is true no matter where you go. Sure, there are people just there to get the credit and others are there to actually learn. The best classes are those where the professor really loves the subject and engages the class. I think some majors like the business majors are geared toward getting a job. The more liberal arts majors are more geared toward education. Since I've been a professional in the workforce for many years and I am getting a degree for personal satisfaction, I am learning for the sake of learning and because I enjoy going to class and meeting new people. I don't always enjoy the work, but I do like to read authors that I haven't discovered and reaquaint myself with the classics.

Jacob

My classes have been very good for the most part. My teachers have been enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgeable about their subject matter, and with one notable exception, stay on topic. My favorite class so far has been Introduction to Philosophy, taught by Ralph Acampora. He knew seemingly everything about the subject matter he taught, and seemed to really love what he was doing. I have a great selection of classes at Hofstra, but that may just be because I am a creative writing/philosophy double major. My girlfriend is a biology major who eventually wants to go into medicine, and she has a downright poor selection of classes: next semester there is only one section of each of three classes she needs to take, and two of them conflict.

Maureen

Hofstra is a very big school but once you declare a major the community becomes smaller and more welcoming. I love seeing the same faces in my classes. It makes you feel less over-whelmed by all the choices you have in your education. Being surrounded by students with the same career goals as yourself is very comforting. You feel like you are on the right track in life.

Charlie

The professors at Hofstra are, for the most part, very good. I've found them to be very well educated, and very good educators. I think that Hofstra's faculty is its strong point, and if its reputation improves- it will have been a result of the faculty and the students they've effected. The school offers a bunch of very good classes, and the departments are pretty well structured.

Tristan

My professors all know my name and still recognize me when I see them in the campus. My favorite classes are all english classes. I've also done an independent study which i loved a lot. Its hard to judge where you stand in grades b/c not all the kids are in the same major and its hard to see who is doing well and who isn't. I would have liked to have done better. Some classes are just hard mainly because of the professor. Although I do like hofstra, I have encountered many professors I do not like especially in the poli sci department including - Dudek, Himelfarb I also do not like Neil Donahue at all - he's horrible. I hate the language requirement. It makes me so stressed out. i am here about to graduate taking french 004, its unbelievable. They really should put less of an emphasis on it. Although it doesn't make me not want to go to the school it does make me hate my life for a little while each week. Its one of my biggest problems.

Nicole

I've liked almost all of my professors. Like every college, univeristy, or elementary school I've hated some of my professors. But I've also had two professors here that have absolutely influenced me as much as a professor can. The school is worth coming to just to have a class with them.

Parker

i enjoy almost all of my classes, except for the generel requirement classes my classes, except for lectures are usual small and the teachers always know my name students are definately intellectual outside of class, there are even clubs where all you do is choose a topic to talk about i am not happy about the writing profiency exam, and that they make students who have passed out of english 1 and 2 due to getting a 4 or 5 on the ap test take it

Abigail

Conversations in class are usually insightful and the class sizes are small which makes you learn more.

Harper

As of current, I am a freshman at Hofstra, and I am finishing my first year. So far, I've really enjoyed all of my classes. They have been very interesting, and all my teachers have been great. I feel like college is such a great place to learn. It is so much different from highschool. I feel like I've already learned so much since I've been here, and opened up new horizons.

Andrea

Depending on home big the class, but most professors know your name. I study about 10 hours a week for 4 classes. Class participation is common.

Parker

The vast majority of my classes have been wonderful. The professors have been incredibly knowledgeable and approachable, and have always learned all the students by name. There are no giant lectures, so class discussions are very common. However, you will still get the occasional horrible professor who shouldn't be allowed to teach. I'm a music education major, and I think the music department is one of the strongest on campus. All but one of my music professors has been fabulous, and they are all willing to go above and beyond to help you succeed. The ensemble directors are inspiring in their dedication, and I absolutely love my private teacher. After particularly good concerts some ensemble directors have been known to throw parties, and there is always a holiday and end of the year party where students and professors both have lots of fun. Between classes and practicing all the music majors usually end up in the music library, which is great because everybody gets to know everyone else, and since we all love music there's always something to talk about. Students who go to Hofstra tend to be more career minded, and the educational experience as a whole reflects that to some extent, but I feel like I'm getting a great education for education's sake nonetheless.

Jo

The academics at Hofstra have always shown my that you get of it was you put into it. Classes are normally small and the professors know your name and are there to help you, if you ask. I've always found that most professors at Hofstra have a good sense of humor and are passionate about teaching. Most of the professors at Hofstra have come from the field they are teaching in, which gives you a comfort that they are teaching from experience not just straight from a book. I know that my professors have connections still within their field and can help you find a job or write you a great recommendation.

Brittney

There are endless windows of opportunities to get involved with the area of study that suits your passion both inside and outside of the classroom at Hofstra University. Enabling this are the professors who have mentor-like qualities as they provide you with the best advice on what you can do to embark on your journey of exploration. Most of the professors at Hofstra have had unbelievable experiences, aside from teaching, which makes speaking to them so compelling and enriching.

Ainsley

Professors do know my name. I feel like a lot of students don't study that much, or at least they don't study as much as I do. There are lots of intellectual conversations among honors college students. Students aren't that competitive in "regular classes" or in the easy majors. I spend time outside of class with professors during their office hours. The math department is small but it is a good department.

Brandon

Hofstra classes in general are geared toward learning for the sake of learning. There are some professors that use real work examples rather than fake textbook examples. However the learning is in depth and stimulating. The professors are excellent and are always available for help or just to discuss the material. My favorite professor was Dr. Shawn T. Thelen of the Zarb School of Business. I took International Marketing with him. He gave 1 test, and most of the class was spent on examining international news, talking about what international marketing entails career wise, as well as examining real word cases for analysis. The main project was identifying an unknown international market segement along with a 25 page marketing plan. He made me realize that international marketing is exactly what I want to do and motivated me to enroll in HUHC.

Caitie

The academics are very strong. All the professors know your name if you speak up, most of my classes really encourage student participation. Students tend to not be competitive. If you want intelligent conversations out of class, you can find people to have them with. I am a publishing major and it is awesome because we are one of the only colleges that has it. The classes are really hands on and we learn how things work in the industry and have to use what we are learning and actually do it.
