What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Hey Scott, what your're seeing right now is yourself in the future. I've come back to give you a little advice that you will need when you get to college. I'm going to try and help prepare yourself for not only a huge experience in your life but hopefully help you get over the mistakes that brought me down. Follow these three steps and things will be just fine. The first step is to take excellent notes. Taking excellent notes will prepare you regardless of class; making those sleepless study nights become restfull nights. The second of the three would probably be the most important, that in which is time management. Having your every day schedule lined out for you during the week, will make your school work become that much easier. No stressing due dates or getting to class because you prepared your schedule ahead. The last hint I could give would be proper understanding of APA writing. Of all the essays you will write, this is important. Be honest and keep your ingreity. Good luck friend, and have a blast. Remember proper note taking, time management, and APA understanding. See you in the future Scott.

If I could go back and give myself advice, my wisdom would be two-fold. Firstly, I would advise myself on how to better spend my senior year. In my senior year, I was an exchange student to Japan. I would tell myself to really try everything. I wish I had spent more time focused on the language so that I could have met more friends and connected on a deeper level. I wish I had put more time into exploring every bit of culture that Japan had to offer. Most of all, I would tell myself to cherish everyday, because the time to return to the States was fast approaching. My second piece of advice to myself would be for when I came back and enrolled at IIT. All of the clubs, student organizations, and leadership positions have been worth so much more than the effort I put into them and I wish I had gotten involved earlier and with more passion. Sincerely, Alex Welk

The advice I would give myself is to work hard, don't slack off. Prioritising time is very important because I had a lot of free time and thought I would finish my homework easily, but it did not work out.

College visits are essential. they let you know what you are gettign into. Make sur ethat when you apply to colleges you also apply for financial aid. Most likely the school that gives you the best deak financially is the school you go to. That is another reason to visit all colleges on your list. You can make a list of pros and cons to teh school you visit. When you choose a school to go to, fidn ways to deal with , or make better, the cons that were listed. After you figure that out, enjoy your last year in high school.

You're entering the adult world! Be prepared to push yourself; there may not be a teacher there to do it for you! Commit yourself to your future by putting your main focus on being academically successful, but don't forget to have fun along the way. The best way to enjoy college is to strike a good balance between fulfilling responsibilities and appreciating down time. There will be personality conflicts, whether they involve roommates, classmates, or professors. Develop the fine art of honest, diplomatic communication, and be willing to compromise on the little things (NOT on your ethics or moral standards!). This is a great time for building the social, academic, and professional networks that will help you create the life you always wanted!

I would not want to go back in time but move forward, and improve myself. As much as I want to go back in time, and give myself all the advise I could about past problems, and how I could have applied to more scholarships when I was in high school, I will never be able to go back in time in reality. I think accepting what I have done till now in my life made me who I am, and made me learn a lot about myself during the process. Also, the challenges I've faced in the past will equip me with the knowledge to overcome other obstacles I will face in the future.

The most valuable thing I have gotten out of my college experience is knowledge. Knowledge allows one to move mountains. The knowledge that I have gained has allowed me to see how far humanity and our universe have come. Politics, Sciences, and Languages (to name a few) have transformed because of the intelligence of the human mind. We have yet to achieve more. Knowing that and understanding that intrigues me and forces me internally to learn more so that I can take part in such phenomenon. College has also allowed me to understand and learn about so many cultures and beliefs throughout our planet. I have met and debated with individuals from different nations. I have an open mind and a thirst for understanding because of college. I come from a family that isn't educated. My parents were only able to complete the sixth grade. When I speak to them I realize how lucky I am to know things that they never dreamed of. They are proud of me, which is the most gratifying feeling in the world.

Henri

A higher education with an emphasis on math and engineering. It's a different environment than I've been exposed to in the past.

Joseph

The main thing that I have gotten out of my college experience has been the discipline to not only learn; but to stretch myself beyond my own goals. The curriculum is very demanding and the professors expect students to keep up with the paces that have been established. This challenge has awakened my own intellect and made me strive for an even deeper understanding of the material as I have progressed over the past two and a half years. I will be an asset to my future employers because of the training and education that I am receiving at Illinois Institute of Technology.

In just 3 weeks of attending IIT, I have learnt a lot ; From academics to culture and even to my career path in life! IIT has shaped my mind and I have been programmed to believe that Anything is possible. I now have a vision and I can see how I fit into this world of expanding complexity. Although I have spent just three weeks in IIT, I have learnt what I did not know for the first 21 years of my life! walton in mary shelly's book (Frankenstein) said -"What cannot be expected in the city of eternal light?'. I know the answer and the answer is "nothing!". In the city of eternal light anything is possible! But the best thing is this - IIT is the city of eternal light!

Attending the Rockville campus of Montgomery College (MC) in Maryland has been a culturally enriching experience for me. I came from a Massachusetts community college where the demographics were not vast. Now, in my third semester at MC, I have fostered friendships with people from all areas of the world including Senegal, Columbia and Bangladesh. Each of these new friendships has broadened my horizons. These new friends have taught me about their diverse cultures and intricate languages. After hearing about the beautiful city of Dhaka in Bangladesh my interests have turned to international travel. I have learned that every individual is truly unique. Every person has their own stories to tell about where they came from, how they arrived at where they are now, and what they hope to achieve in the future. My college experience has given me a voracious appetite to learn more. I have taken a heightened interest in Sociology and Anthropology due to my exposure to a school whose student body is as diverse as the seasons. I look forward to harvesting more knowledge about alternate cultures and using it to help others understand and appreciate the differences in humankind.

College helps you grow up and become practical. You realize that theres really no on that will hold you hand and baby you. You have to stand up for yourself and help yourself become a better you. In college, I realized what educations really about. I mean in HS I was an A/B student with a 31 on my ACT. And then I came here and I flopped. I have a 2.48 GPA! Thats HORRIBLE. But, it happened because I wasnt great with my freedom. I abused it. This is what college taught me. How to grow up, use my time wisely, and appreciate everything life throws towards you!

There are many positives that I can take out of my college experience most notable of which is my passion for the Information Technology discipline as well as the opportunity to experience the cultural diversity at IIT. I came into Illinois Institute of Technology as a transfer student with a brief background of Information Technology that I had received while studying in India. I am leaving the Undergraduate program with a certainty of what I would like to do for a career, and a desire to pursue a Graduate degree in Computer and Information Security as well as course studies in Web Development. This can be credited to the enthusiasm of the Professors, their passion for their respective specializations, and their willingness to help. Also, the variety of student organizations at IIT has given me a platform to learn about and appreciate different cultures; every culture proudly showcases its identity through events on campus. My involvement with Bridges IIT -an organization that caters to International Students helping them blend in with the American lifestyle -has enabled me to meet people and build friendships that have influenced my perspective on life. It has been a great experience.

The college experience has allowed me the opportunity to grow and focus on the goals that I have set for myself. Although I have not gotten everything I hoped for at IIT, I don’t regret my decision to come here because I have been heavily challenged in my Biomedical Engineering classes, which has helped me prepare for the MCAT and given me a work ethic that I will need to maintain in order to compete in cutthroat medical school, and allowed me to meet intelligent students and professors that have made my learning experience a treat. Overall, while college can be overwhelming at first, it is a vast network of connections and opportunities that everyone should cherish because it can lead you to doing what you love in the future.

The university is a closely knit family as there are comparatively less students. There is a huge international presence which makes it interacting with other international students a pleasure. I am also getting to know a lot in a lively place like Chicago. It is full of culture and the cultural institutions are amazing. The students here are very helpful and all departments here work with great efficiency. Also, the emphasis on technology as a mean of teaching is taken to a new level here. It makes working a great enjoyment.

TING

Before I begin my master degree pursuing, I have been working in Power Grid for 4 years, it was really a helpful and good experience for me, i became more mature and atttain much practical experience out of the text book in the realistic world. Then I decides to learn more stuffs about my job, then I come to IIT.

Learning morals and living on my own along with society.

One of the things I most appreciate at the Illinois Institute of Technology is the diversity among the students. I have met people from Korea, India, China, Ghana, Nigeria and so forth. It is amazing to speak to these people and to work closely with them. I believe it is a great asset to develop relationships with people that are not born in this country during college. For one, it broadens one’s view of the world. I once went to a community college and I have not seen the diversity in students then I do here. Another thing I appreciate at IIT is the Inter-professional Projects (IPRO) that we are required to take. These consist of a group of students solving a problem or researching new technologies/methodologies. When it comes to group work, this is the ultimate example. The students are the ones that lead these projects. It is as close to gaining job experience while getting college credit and looks great on a resume. I learned what I can expect from myself and from others. I also had a chance to learn about things outside my level of comfort, a great learning opportunity.

The idea of college to my mother was something she had only experienced in a dream. Since i was a little girl, i always new i wanted to go to college. Now that i am actually living my dream i am at a loss for words. I love being surrounded by people who want to learn, teachers who truly care and BOOKS ! The power of education is like no other. I am going to college for me, as well as my mother. I will be the first in my family to graduate, and i will be the very first in my family to live a comfortable life. Having the opportunity to attend college has shown me that there is more to life then selling drugs, and being a teen mother. Which is what i am surrounded by everyday. With determination and faith i will accomplish my goal. I will dedicate my degree to my mother and to orginizations like this one that offer financial help to students with a goal or a dream. I truly thank you.

Out of my college experience so far, I have learned many things. What you get out of life is how much work you put towards a certain task. This leads to me knowing that complaining about anything will not get me anywhere, only hard work will. My classes have sufficiently improved my work ethic and time management, two traits that not only help in school, but in life and careers as well.

WEIQIAN

This is my first time to USA and the things I have gotten and learned out of the school about America is the hospitality and warm heart about USA people including the officers and many warm hearted people here. I came here by myself last year and I even didn't know how to take the train to my school. After I got off the airplane and I asked person by person to find the way step by step including how to by farecards, tickets , where is the toliet.etc. Fortunately, all of the people including passenagers and officers often told me very specificly where I should go and some of them even lead the way for me and walk with me to the destination and come back then. Besides that the Banker here is also helpful and help me pay my tutions very patiently. This is the most grateful thing I learned out of college in USA.

My college experience taught me that diversity is the spice of life. Each day I learn something new about an old friend, or make a new one. We may come from different walks of life but in the end we are all trying to make sense of the same thing. I met a Vietnamese international student who was in the States for only two to three years. His parent had sent him here with their own wealth from Vietnam. His tuition was paid for on time every month, while I was trying to complete my FAFSA with my mother who makes less than twenty thousand a year. Having been in the States for more than eight years and learned the concept of social class, I realize I’m out of my league in this school. But we manage to clique to really well. Then one day he told me he has trouble concentrating on school work, he asked me to come to the counselor office with him to get some help. My neurosis alarmed me. Is it really concentration that he has troubled with? The answer was no. We were both in college, both dazed and scared by possibilities.

Anthony

My college experience has taught me that anything can be accomplished. The situation may seem as though it is impossible, but if you remain calm, patient, and organized, you will get through it. First of all, one must remain calm at all times. A calm mind can better assess situations. Disaster feeds off of calamity. Secondly, a person should always remain patient. A lot of times, things don't happen in the time frame that you originally set, but if you remain patient, you may see the situation blossom. Lastly, staying organized is the key. Disorder can cause any situation to fail. Keeping things organized will allow you to see situation clearly and create better solutions to problems. In conclusion, my colleg experience has been my value. Learning to remain calm in all situations, learning to remain patient, and learning to stay organized has made life so much easier for me. There is no situation that is impossible. All I have to do is apply what I have gotten out of my college experience.

Well, I just not only learned what I have leran , but also how to learn by myself which is more helpful for my entire learning life.

Guang

The most valuable experience I have gained from my university is applying knowledge I have learnt to life and practice. To be specific, I studied in the lab during last year and it helps me have a better understanding of the knowledge I learnt from class and applied them to real life. I also have learnt a broad variety of knowledge as well as another culture. So I think those experience are really helpful for my self-development.

Thomas

I have been in college for one semester, and already it has been the most valuable experiences of my life. During my freshman year of high school, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Synrome (AS). AS is a high functioning form of autism and effects a person'a ability to form significant relationships. Routine situations can become overwhelming to someone with AS. Going to college is a huge step for anyone. But, going to college for someone with AS can be described as completely overwhelming. I chose to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology. I then made the decision to live on-campus which was a huge step for me. I have not only amazed my parents these past four months but I have amazed myself! I transitioned easily into living on-campus and managed to earn excellent grades my first semester. I have grown more in the last four months than I have in years. I really hope you will consider me for this scholarship because I believe I represent someone that went outside their comfort zone and challenged themself beyond what most people face in their day to day lives. Thank you for your consideration!

To start with, college is a place where we learn a lot , explore ideas. Te faculty in the college is top notch and it really feels great to be a part of the college and I consider myself really fortunate to be a part of it. It is really valuable to me because as a student it is the best thing that can ever happe to me. Your thirst for knowledge, friends, new experiences in life all of these make a college life priceless :)

sharath

big circle of friends and faculty. exposure to outside world and able to compete with any situation.

It was extremely valuable to attend Illinois Institute of Technology because I could meet so many people from around the country. IIT has the highest percentage of international students in America so that students could experience cultural varieties to understand and become open minded person. I think it was the most valuable experience. Also, I'm so proud of myself attending school that has prestige and reputation. I feel so happy when tourists from all around the world come infront of the crown hall that I am studying, looking at us with envious mind. Also, living right next to the chicago downtown is a wonderful experience because chicago itself is the 3rd biggest city in America. That makes me proud to attend IIT. The last thing that I want to point out is that IIT has excellent curriculum that students can learn architecture appropriately. Professors are awesomely intelligent besides, facilities are excellent too. We have nicest residential buildings, lab facilities, student center, lecture halls and resting areas. I love my university.

Ryan

Already, after my first semester, I am begining to learn what I am going to be doing after college. At IIT they begin to inform the students early on of what professionals in their major usually do once they graduate. I take this as a great advanatage, to know what I want to do after college and have the abition to achieve all that I set out to. I have begun setting goals for my life and I plan to follow through on them all. It is exciting to me to be now thinking past college and onto what challenges come in my path in the future.

Kendra

Kendra Parker Campus Discovery Scholarship January 04, 2011 I have been attending Miami Dade College (MDC) since the Fall of 2008. My attendance at MDC has really been an eye opener for me. Every school (in my opinion) has teachers who are great and then some teachers who aren’t so great. This is where I learned that not all professors can teach. Just because someone has a Ph.D (in whatever subject) doesn’t mean they have the ability to teach that subject to others. Through these professors I have learned a very precious lesson: I, no matter how great my professor may or may not be, need to take the responsibility and reinforce what was said to me in class. Despite that, attending Miami Dade College has been a wonderful and valuable experience. I met some incredible people, who have taught me some incredible things; but what has really made me happy about attending this school is that, this is where I first started getting involved in helping other people and the community.

Bill

I have gotten a vast amount of knowledge and experience that is directly applicable to my course of study and intended career. I have no doubt that I am prepared to meet whatever career challenges I may encounter, and if I do not already possess the requisite knowledge to complete a task, I know that I can obtain it. The prestige of my school makes the degree that I am earning the key to unlocking job opportunities that I have been unable to be considered for in the past. The people that I have had the privelege of meeting: staff, students, alumni, and guests have broadened my outlook and I am a better rounded individual for having interacted with them.

Shannon

It was only recently that I discovered the impact that my parent's divorce had on me. I was nine when it happened and so I was uprooted from my school in the 4th grade and the education that I was being so positively pushed in, was halted. It was not until recently as I finally got into the University I have been dreaming of, that I realized how much of my potential had been stifled. Not because people did notcare but because they did not know how to reach in and help me discover it. My college experience has helped me uncover that masked potential I have hidden inside of me, that untapped talent that is waiting to burst out of my fingertips. It has given me the opportunity to really shine and discover not just who I am, but who I want to be. And it has given me tools to make that person into a reality. I believe the habits I develop at school will leave with me and I want to make sure it continues to be the most valuable experience I can make it be. I dont want to miss any of my potential.

I have learnt be to more career oriented to stand out in a competitive school.. and to be more than satisfied with what you are provided with, independent and social! Participating on campus and making new friends has been an important asset I learnt and adjusting to live on campus with new roommates made me a complete person. I love being a part of IIT which has made me a better person today and I will cherish my memories always!

Ahmad

IIT is one of the best schools for engineering in the Midwest, not because of it's place and history in Chicago but because of teachers that care about the students and their dedication to help the students learn and understand the material for example on one of my midterms i was stuck on a problem in physics at 3am i email the teacher and within 10min i got an answer, that how dedicated they are to the student not like some big university were the professes wont talk to you in or out of class . This school has helped me find scholarships and find ways to increase my fictional aid, they helped my find my first internship and are coaching my get a very good job. my experience with the students is good and very diverse. they have projects were you are placed in teams with other students from other field to build or invent new products "very interesting and a great time"

Erin

My college experience has matured me both mentally and socially. I have learned a lot in my classes that will benefit me in my career field as well as in life as a whole. Outside the classroom I have also learned many lessons that have made me into a more responsible and independent adult. My athletic and extracurricular involvements have afforded me great friendships and personal growth opportunties that I believe are invaluable. Living in the dorms, I have experienced a helpful transition from life at home to life in the "real world" that would be much more difficult to get without living on campus. I have been able to interact with foreign students and have learned much about different cultures and how they view ours. My leadership qualities have been strengthened and encouraged by professors and coaches, as well as peers. Overall, I have seen myself grow immensly and know that my future looks much brighter after my college experience.

Oak

Right now I am in a four year and I love it! I love the wide variety of people and amazing professors that change your outlook on topics such as abortion and gay marriage. I tranfered rooms in the dorms because of personal issues with the roommate and that taught me to move on and be the bigger person becuase some people will never change. I am more open than I was before because everyone is beautiful and we all come with baggage. We all just need to be accepted. I have also learned that family is important and sticking together in what improves our world. I have learned that college is a scary place. A freshman, Dwight Clark, died the first week of school and it hit hard. The world is scary so we need to prepare ourselves because no one else will. We need to be kind to everyone because you never know if it will be the last time you see them. And we need to be open to new ideas because our world is changing and we will never live in harmony unless people try to see other worlds.

I have become a lot more responsible and attentive. Getting an education is the most important thing someone should do in their life. Getting an education will give you so much more opportunities in life and better opportunities for their children. A higher education helps a person grow and mature, taking responsibily and better prepare them for the future in any career.

Sneha

In my first semester of college, I have already learned that there is so much I can do here. In classes, if I ever need help I can always talk to my professors, and they are always willing to help me out whenever possible. Outside of classes, there are a wide variety of clubs and organizations--not just for the engineering major that I'm pursuing, but also for the hobbies that I enjoy just as much. My college has also been valuable to attend because it helps me acquire more practical skills; in classes, I get to cooperate with other students of similar or different majors, and that helps me prepare for dealing with others in a workplace. Overall, I know I will eventually gain much experience that will better prepare me for life beyond college, due to the many facilities I can benefit from in my college.

Zshawn

My experience has been an increased awareness of a lot of concepts I was unware of. I am majoring in computer science and would call myself tech savvy. But several of my classes opened my eyes to concepts such as relational databases and important ideas like that. If I had not attended college, I would not have known about all these things. College not only helps you further your education but really opens your eyes to the world in which we live in. My college is attended by a lot of foreign students so you get to learn about other people's cultures and lifestyles as well. In all you make a lot of friends and are more tolerant and informed about the different cultures and peoples that live with us and around us. College is completely different than high school. In general the professors respect the students and give you a chance to learn with out babying you. You are independent and all your choices are your own, good or bad. All consequences of your actions are related to only you. College is something everyone should consider because of the positive way it changes you into an informed individual.

Brock

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience so far, especially being a student athlete. It has alloud me me to make a lot of new friends I wouldn't have otherwise made. It has been valuable so far because of the education. It is a great archtecture program that teaches you quickly about what its like to be an architect.

Few weeks after attending IIT, I said: I should be here 20 years ago! IIT is perfect school to study. Excellent programs + Experienced professors + Big library + Quit places to study + Help for employment = perfect. I am finishing my bachelors’ degree and planning to complete my master degree in IIT. For the first time in my life, I feel learning something new every second. Thanks IIT.

Uguumur

I am international student. I'm from Mongolia, where educational system is completely differs from U.S. But having experience with foreign people, as I was studying in Russian school and Turkish high school, it was easy for me to get used to educational system. The experience I got from the college I'm studying is very valuable to me. I firstly met with so diverse population. I'm learning a lot thing from other students. The teachers are helping to all students and trying to make a relationship between students, which is not familiar in Mongolia and asian educational system. Living in campus gives a lot of opportunity to use freetime effectively. I had a lot of experience by being member of student organizations, which prepares me to life after graduating the college. I had a lot of experience which would be used in my whole life.

Michael

Because this question begs an honest answer, i will say that IIT offered me not much in the department of career. I am an architecture major, and the school spends most of its time teaching about concepts and art, and up until recently, has said little about actual construction or the practical application of knowledge. Although the school does an excellent job of confering theoretical knowledge, it is lacking in the practical sense. it encourages students to design impractical, inefficient, expensive buildings that could not exist in real life because of things like gravity. The school, however, does have its strengths. It teaches a method of thinking- a way to approach problems that could otherwise be intimidating or impossible. I have learned how to study problems in more detail to sometimes find better, less obvious solutions. The final thing i have gotten out of this college is a close network of friends and classmates who all help eachother with difficult projects and homework, as well as provide a nice social circle to spend time with and bond with in free time.

Michelle

I have gained friends and experience. Before coming to college I had a very tight group of friends that got split up when we went away to school. When I got to Illinois Insitute of Technology I was welcomed with a lot of other clueless freshman. I am enrolled in the architecture program which is a very demanding major. This allowed me to become friends with a lot of other architecture students because we had all the same classes and homework. We spent a lot of time together. The school's education is very valuable because the school brings in a lot of working professionals as professors. I also value my education because it is preparing me for what I want to do with my major which is design and build for those who are in need. The school allows me to network with people as well as meet others with similar interests as me. I have gained a lot of friends and incredible experiences in college. I am also being trained to think as an architect.

Harmony

I have made, what I believe to be life long friendships. I have found the man that I want to mary, the man who has helped me to overcome so much. I have learned from my mistakes many times over, and have learned that it is okay to seek help. I have been given the opprotunity to work with so many different people, and have been given so many opprotunities to blossom. It is hard sometimes but I would do it all over again if I had to.

Elaine

In my first couple of years here, the Illinois Institute of Technology has given me the beginning of a strong education, the ability to be involved on campus, and a lot of new friends. It has been very valuable to attend this school primarily for the education. Where else could I study at a top-tier school of architecture in arguably the best architectural city in the United States? I love my school and the accessability to Chicago from campus. I especially appreciate that the architecture professors on campus utilize the city as a study tool: we visit the city to observe discuss, and sketch all the time. I can't imagine what school would be like at a different university, but I truly value the education I am receiving here.

garry

I have yet to get the chance to attend college. When I graduated high school in 1976 it was nessasary to go to work to support my family. My parents were divorced and mother needed my help. Soon after that I was married with three step daughters of seven, five and one years of age. We had a son in 1982. My wife and children have stuggeled with different forms of depression , which led to financial problems, problems at home and later a divorce. Now the plant I was employed at for 34 years has closed leaving me in the worst financial shape of my life. I am living on unemployment, and facing bankruptcy. So I am asking for a chance to change this by going back to school. I'm not asking for pitty, just a chance.
