What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Sheena

I have not attended college as of yet. I am enrolled in the Organizational Leadership program at Providence College and am persuing my BA there in January. Although I did complete a certificate program at the Sawyer School in September of 2000, I have decided that I want to go back to school to earn my degree. I am excited to begin my journey and feel that earning this degree will allow me to further my career and become an even more productive member of society.

My college experience to date has been wonderful. As a busy mother of 3 (including a newborn), online college has been a blessing. Today, I made a difference in a classmate's life. This was an awesome feeling I plan to duplicate. I want to improve the healthcare system and the lives of my children. Online learning has changed my life.

Growing up has been a difficult task. It happens to everyone and yet I didn’t feel prepared for the responsibilities it came along with. I started my first year of college this year and it was not what I expected. There are no teachers yelling at you to do your work or cliques judging others at the lunch table. Anything I wanted I needed to get all by myself. If I wanted an A in class, I had to work for it. If I wanted friends to sit with, I had to make them. College is an amazing experience that pushes people to be more than who they were in high school. I am glad I am enrolled and plan on working hard to get all the things that I want out of my college experience. College has taught me to go after anything that I want. I can reach any goal I just need to work for it.

My college experience as a freshman at the University of Northern Colorado has been very beneficial to my life. Firstly, after completing a semester I have become more patient, mature, and gained more skills when dealing with professional-like situations. Also, I’ve learned how to efficiently manage my time and get homework done in advance. Developing connections around campus through students in leadership positions and faculty is another gain I’ve gained while attending college. I am an interest for the Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority Inc. Being far away from home is sometimes difficult so feeling like I have a family at school helps me cope with being distant. It has been valuable for me to attend college for a plethora of reasons. Most importantly, I would have been unemployed, not attending school, and surrounded by different substances if it wasn’t for me attending college. College changed my life around. In my eyes, it is valuable to attend college to gain people skills, to become more immersed with diversity in the real world, and to be a step ahead of other applicants when it is time to apply for a job.

I have met tons of people from all over the country. I have opportunities to study in Italy, France, and a few other places and take classes that have to do with my major. I have gotten to meet professionals that are in my field of study occupationally. I have been able to build up a network of people that I can later on take a good use to when I need interships or references. ISU has been a wonderful academic experience for me.

Work experience. The classes have tought me to start strong and finish strong. They have taught me to take school very seriously and they have prepared me to work harder in the future. I have meet many wise poeple and from them I can take much wisdom and knowlege. Being on my own has given me independence it has also tought me to work well with others and live with others as well.

Alicia

Throughout my college career I have been able to gain great experiences that have changed me and have been very valuable. One of the greatest college experiences for me has been meeting amazing people and experiencing the different cultural backgrounds. I have been able to interact with many and learn about the different views and beliefs people have. Along with meeting other students who follow the same educational desire I have also been able to interact with different professors. The knowledge that I have gained from each one of them has been without a doubt a great experience. I have been able to learn valuable information that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Being a college student has its ways of changing someone in many ways and I can honestly say that it has changed me for the better. It has allowed me to become an independent person and the successful adult that I strive to be with each day. Attending college has been the best thing that I have done and that anyone could ever do. Education is the most valuable treasure one can hold on to and that can never be taken away.

Sydney

This is my first year attending so i do not have an experience yet but i look to gain enrinchment, friendships, and a in depth learning experience. I look to join organizations and clubs to help my experiences also getting a job and joining a sorority. I think attending a college or university is a valuable experience because it promotes growth independence and empowers our youth by educating them and giving them the tools they need to be promenient figures in the world.

Natalie

My college experience was different from a regual students experience as I played softball for a Division I program. Through my college experience I learned time management, leadership skills, diversification, and what it takes to get along with all trypes of personalities. All of these experiences in which I have learned have carried over into my personal and work life. In the work world it is kind of like playing softball, you do not get to pick your teammates nor do you get to pick the people you work with, but you have to be able to adapt and get along with everyone to get the job done.

Education can be compared to a burning candle. There is only a limited duration of time available to reach a desired spark, and if not accessed properly, it will ultimately burn out. With that said, college is a remarkable outlet to feed this precious flame, to hopefully allow growth and to strive for success, in one's own personal definition. College has taught me to be more dilligent, responsible, cooperative, patient, helpful, and humble. These are distinctions that aid in the evolution of an average citizen to a hardworking community asset and contributor and also provide a chance to attain a more prosperous and fulfilled quality of life; This suggests the necessity and value of attendeding a higher academic institution, such as college. I look forward to hopefully hearing from campusdiscovery in the near future and I'd love to thank you for your time. Thus to whomever this may concern at campusdiscovery, please grant an opportunity to thoses who thirst for an educated and brighter future, even if it further happens not be this particular applicant.

Jessica

My college experience that I've obtained from attending Indiana State is not one that I dreamt about as a junior and senior in high school. I always dreamt about going to a large school with huge athletic events to attend and many social events to participate in. That's not the case now. ISU is a very quiet campus for having about 13,000 students attending the school. That can be good and bad at times. I got a lot of studying done, and met many people with the same aspirations as me who will continue to be my friend for years to come. The teachers here are great at working with students one on one to help them achieve their personal and educational goals. Even though the school is quiet, it's great to attend because the help to go far in life is available through easy contact with all of the professors, and through a lot of the programs the school has to offer. The help is much more personalized and direct. I'm thankful for havng attended this school, it has helped me learn how to better organize my social life and academic life.

Oliver

Out of my college experience, the number one vaulable thing I believe I have gotten is my knowledge. I have learned so much than I thought I would from some wonderful teachers, and I can only learn more as my years progress. Also, the friends I have made are the closest people to me at the moment besides my family. They have been there for me since the first semester and our friendships have only grown stronger. I feel the best thing for me to cherish though, is how mature I've grown since leaving high school. College put me into a reality check, and I have grown up from a childish person with future goals to a determined man to strive for the excellence I desire. College has taught me how life truely is, and that I can't just give up on my self no matter how difficult the task at hand.

Sydnie

So far I've gotten a really good experience. I got to do an internship at my dream job of Disney. Well I am doing it now and having a really good experience. Being at this school has really helped me grow up and focus more on my future and has taught me to plan ahead and form a life plan, although the tuition and housing costs are extremely high, I just keep praying that the Lord will make a way for me to pay for it all.

sookhyun

I want to work as a professional and ISU has a good Dietetics program.

Sierra

So far I have been able to become a member of the Student Nursing Assistant comittee, and Spring Week comittee, and through those groups I have been able to learn and love diversity, practice on my social skills, become a student leader, and blend well in student group activities. I believe that it will be important for people to learn about multicultures in the future, because of the increase in migration in the United States. It is also good to be able to balance being a leader, and a group member at the same time because if one attribute becomes stronger, the other one will lack.

lajudd

the best thing i have gain from my college experience would have to be the responsibilty . its something about being on my own; being totally responsibily for my action really made me understand adult hood .

Brittany

You need to make sure you are ready to leave your family and friends. Ask someone who is going to the same college to be your roommate. It will make you well a little more comfrontable.

Jessica

You are not going to stick with just one major. You might change your major 5 or 6 times before you decide to stick with it. College is not usually completed in 4 years, you will spend 5 or 6 years there if not more. You might hate waking up early but if you have morning classes make sure you go to bed right after American Idol is over. Make sure you study well in advance over the semester, procrastinating and not studying until the night before an exam makes you doomed to fail. Do not go out every night, you will spend lots of money and end up missing class in the morning from being too tired to wake up. Live on campus at least one semester, if you don't you're missing out on a lot. Take your notes on a laptop, it makes them a lot easier to print out. Make sure you have a flash drive it will be your best friend. Always have a buddy in your class in case you are not there to make sure you know what is going on. Professors do not teach directly from the textbook.

Timothy

As a high school senior, I was very stubborn and set in my ways. I was into partying and having fun, college was one of the last things on my mind even though I was registered at an area two year school. I believe I would go back and smack myself for starters, then I would explain to myself that the things I was doing will ultimately lead to a twelve year struggle. That struggle consisted of two failed attempts at college, as well as a failed marriage. On top of that, I received a diagnosis of a major neuromuscular disorder that only added to the problems. It took twelve years before I actually had a goal in mind, one that I truly believed I could reach with some hard work. If I could go back and explain to myself that without a goal, you will not get anywhere, that is what I would try to get through my thick skull at that time. The important fact about all of this however is that I am on the right path now, with a goal that I am closer and closer to achieving, I can almost see the finish line!

Ericka

The advice I would give myself would be to be first off...Dont be shy in class. It'll only drag you down! Ask questions and don't be afraid to feel like a fool because you are not the only one thinking or feeling that way. Second, be more open and friendly to people. You don't want to walk around campus and know no one. Third, this isn't high school, you just can't assume you'll breeze through every test and do amazing. Study hard, it'll pay off in the end. Lastly, don't judge people and don't care if people judge you. It doesn't matter what someone says about you, as long as you know where you're going and how you're getting there, then those people can just move aside.

Justina

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself no matter how bad it got at home to stay there untill I graduated. Then Once I graduated I could go to whatever college that I wanted to go to. I would also tell myself to go apply to as many colleges and then decide on which one I would like to go to out of the one's I got accepted into. Another thing that I would let myself know would to take some of my classes online. Now that I am doing my schooling online I realized that it works better for my schedule, I wouldn't suggest my self to take them all online though because the interaction with other students is very important as well. This is what i would tell myself if I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior.

Jennifer

The two biggest things I wish I could go back and do in high school to prepare for college would be to volunteer in the community around me and to study more in high school general education classes. Volunteering in college was intimidating at first because I did not volunteer anywhere as a teenager. Colleges as well as companies looking to hire grad students always tell applicants that the best thing they can do is volunteer, get to know the community, and get experience ahead of time in the field they want to work in. Not only does it help land a job, but it also allows the individual build networks, make new friendships, and establish a better life in the community they want to eventually live in. Studying more in general education classes also would have helped prepare for college because one does not realize how much of that work translates or corresponds with the types of things you learn in college as a freshmen or a sophomore. Any extra knowledge or any further research a person can do in any of those areas, or even in subjects one is interested in for fun would help in college courses.

Nathaniel

It's easy to look back and say you would do things different in a perfect world. And believe me, I'm no exception to that. But, I also think that my decisions back in high school have set me up for where I'm at now, so I have no regrets. Who's to say that if I had done things differently that I would be in a worse situation than I am now. I think the experiences I've had since making my choices in school have made me who I am today. I also think that those decisions will help me in the long run while attending school and my life afterwards. There's no use trying to change the past, just try to do what you feel passionate about and stick with your decision. Life meets no-one halfway.

Jordan

First thing is first, get to know the people around you and your advisor. One of the most important things I have learned is that not to be afraid to "come out of your shell." If you are never vocal about yourself then you will never learn anything or know anyone and then you will start to beat up on yourself for that. It is always good to get know your professors and advisors because they are there for you when you need help the most because it is there job and they are more than happy to do it. Also, never be afraid to ask for help, it will pay out in the end.

Taryn

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to focus on the big picture. In high school, the most important thing to me was my social life. And although a social life is still important to a college student, it is not as important as motivation. Motivation is extremely important in everything a person does. At the high school level, one must have the motivation to strive for more than a prom king/queen title, or most popular title. Be motivated enough to get involved in different things. Get involved in the community, use teachers as a resource for higher learning and advice; that is what they are there for! In the real world, it's all about who you know, so start networking and maintain professional relationships.

Allison

Don't be afraid to keep your door open your freshman year. It may seem weird, but you will meet more people that way and keeping your door shut all the time makes you seem unfriendly. Also keep your trusting personality, but know that not everyone has your best intentions in mind, so trust your gut and don't be afraid to say no, even if it means you might spend a friday night alone once and awhile. Enjoy your time off while you have it. Try to remember to write down your assignments in class so you aren't constantly asking others if you have anything due, and try not to procrastinate, all nighters are no fun. Other than that just have fun and remember classes are why you are at college, but don't forget the social aspects of school as well. Try to find a good balance.

Mandy

If I could go back to my high school self and give myself adivce for the future I would tell myself is not go to community college, make tons of friends, declare a major early, and have fun.

Lynile

If I were to give myself advice as a high school senior, I would have told myself to work a little bit harder to be in the top ten instead of top twenty of my class concerning my GPA, so that I could have been eligible for more scholarships. I would have told myself to do more job shadowing so that I could really get a feel for what I wanted to major in at college. I would have told myself to save a little more money over the summer so that I could join a sorority my freshman year of college. I would have told myself to work on my study skills to be more efficient. Most importantly I would tell myself to be as involved as possible on campus while I?m there. You only get to experience college once, so make the most of it while you?re there.

Taylor

As a high school senior I was more concerned with dance team and yearbook since I was a leader for both. If I could go back I would tell myself to take some of that time and dedication I was putting into dance and yearbook and look for scholarships. I should have been concentrating on part of my future also, money is my main concern with getting through school since I have no financial help from my parents and little from financial aid. Applying for scholarships in high school would have been the smart thing for me to do.

Tramaine

I would give myself the advice to take harder classes as a senior. The reason why I say that is because I struggled to deal with the adjustment when I went off to college.

Marvin

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself in order to achieve your goal to be an engineer work hard and study. I would also tell myself that you would have a lot of time in the future to chase girls but right now focus your time in the books. In addition, to my conversation with myself I would say, save all the money you make as well as apply to many different scholarships as you can because you are going to need the money. The books in college are expensive.

Tammy

As I near age 40, I would have to first explain how quickly time passes. My mind still believes I am 18. It is amazing to me that I could be SO old, SO soon. As a high school senior it is very important to skip the procrastination. The thought that you will take a year or so out of school, is a complete loss. You need to stay in the game. Get a degree now. College is nothing like high school, the freedom you have wished for is there. You are an adult and you will be making adult decisions during your college experience. There are still weekends for extracurricular activities, going to college does not mean that your time for fun ends. It is a new beginning, a new chapter in your life. You have an oppurtunity to succeed in life and you must appreciate it. Don't wait until you're OLD like me. Trust me and believe me, someday you will be old too. Start your journey to college now and enjoy your young life while you can. Follow this advise and I promise, someday, you'll thank me.

Nicole

If I could go back in time to give myself advice, the first thing I would tell myself is to start working on large projects early. At the beginning of the semester, there is not much day-to-day homework, so there is plenty of time to get ahead. It's best to start as soon as you can, because if you start even a month ahead, you could still not have enough time. As with any large project or assignment, you will run into problems, especially with technology, so be prepared. Even if you don't have any large projects, you can still start on small ones, or read textbooks. Getting started early will really help balance out the load over the semester and reduce the stress of having multiple projects or essays due the same week. I would also say to get involved with a variety of clubs and organizations. They will give you something to do in your free time, which is still productive, and fun, at the same time. College isn't all about reading textbooks; you have to have time for just hanging out with your friends.

Kristina

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to stop being so nervous about going away to college. I would tell myself to step out of my comfort zone more and that I do not need to be afraid of it. I feel like I made some pretty good decisions and a pretty good transition from high school to college life, so those are probably the two main things that I would tell myself. I would tell myself to just lighten up and enjoy the experience, because college is the best part of my life so far.

Dominique

As a high school senior, I would have told my self to study more and prepare myself for college more so than I actually did. Also I would have re took the SAT a few times to have achieved a better score. As far as scholarships, I would have told myself to look for more of them and particapate in the essays even though I was afraid to do so. I would have told my self to ask for more help when needed and focused more on the aspect of actually learning the needed information.

Justin

I would tell myself that no matter how hard life gets, don't give up! When you think that life has just put too much on your shoulders know that you will make it through it eventually and it is the people that can tough it out that can truely go far in life. Give it all you've got because you only have one life to live. Have faith and never give up because no matter how long the tunnel, there will always be light at the other end!

Constance

Knowing what I know now as a college student, I would definitely change a few things i did in high school. First off, I would have joined a lot more clubs to get the experience of being socially active. In college there is so much to do but I am so shy and nervous to meet people, so that is one thing I would do. Another thing I would do is manage my time well. In high school I used to procrastinate a lot and now it has become a habit for me. In college it is not a joke to wait the night before to turn in a term paper. I have learned my lesson there. The last thing I would recommend to myself is to be more positive and look at the good side of situations. In high school I used to almost always have a negative attitude about things going on in my school because I did not like my high school. That affected the way people looked at me and I really am not a negative person. Therefore, being more positive helps the way people see you and you can actually get more opportunities in life!

Sierra

I would have told myself to find more scholarships and grants, because now that I am a freshman in college, I see how much money goes into being a college student. I also would have reminded myself to work more on my studying skills, because I have had to teach myself the right way to study without any guidance.

Brittany

I would of told myself to work harder. It is so different in highschool because you think that the world is over when one little thing happens. College is so different and it is actually "Cool" to be smart!! It is looked down uppon when you dont do good in classes and you dont try your hardest! I think every highschool student should know that every teacher especially their senior year teachers are trying to prepapre you for college, and so many kids are wasting thousands of dollars because they didnt listen to those teachers during their senior year and now they are failing out and missing out on the best years of their life!!

Blaine

The most important piece of advice that I would give myself is to network and get to know as many people as I possibly could do. After searching the country for internships and post-graduate jobs, I have come to realize that knowing the right people can have a huge effect on whether you get a job or not. Unfortunately for me, I was not able to realize this fast enough as i did not really start networking until the start of my junior year in college. There is no doubt in my mind that knowing the right people can be one of the most valuable tools a person can have. One of my communication professors said it best, "It is not what you know that employers are looking for. It's who you know." That is why if I had the chance, I would go back and tell myself to go out and meet and introduce myself to as many people as I possibly could.

Rebecca

The first and foremost advice to give, always keep oneself on a schedule. Losing track of time and not getting the task you need to complete finished in the time that it should be can always make things stressful and get you further behind. When a test or quiz is assigned start studying the day that you are informed, never wait last minute or you are only failing yourself. It is also important to make friends in your classes; that way you can make little study groups to help you prepare. Another thing to consider would be giving oneself a break, just a little relaxing time so you are not feeling so overwhelmed. This could be done by giving yourself five minute breaks between homework for different classes. Also, never rush to get the homework done, even when you know your teacher is not collecting the work. In the end you?re going to wish you understood the material. With that said be sure that you are getting all the information and instructions of what is needed to complete the class. One last little bit of information be sure to ask questions if you are not completely understanding something. I

John

If I could go back in time and rethink some of classes I had in high school. I would also talk more to my teachers about what I needed to do to improve my chances at scholarships. I should have talked to more people about the different of living at home and going away to school would be. I would have looked into how much it would cost my parents and realized that I should have been more thankful of what I had at home.

Shelby

Don't let the freedom of being at college lower your GPA. Make sure you know when assignments are due and turn them in on time. Don't wait until the weekend before to write a paper that is due Monday. Enjoy the crazyness that comes with having a roommate. Let things go, rather than letting them eat at you. STUDY LIKE CRAZY.

Bethany

I remember sitting in the center of my living room, surrounded by over ten piles of literature from schools which were sure that they were the right one for me. Each university promised great people, top-notch academics, small class sizes, and an invaluable college experience that they were certain no other college could give. The funny thing is, I ended up going to the university which, on paper, seems like I would like the least. But ironically, I love it! If I had narrowed my college search down to only schools that fit my stringent checklist of what I thought I needed, I probably would have missed out on somewhere that stretched me and exposed me to new people, ideas, and opportunities. My checklist worked on paper but didn?t take into account the people I would meet or the opportunities I would have. If I could only go back to tell myself that college is what you make it, I would. Every school promises these great things, and the thing is, they probably can all deliver, because if you make the most of the opportunities you get, it will be the best four years of your life.

Larry

If I could go back in time and speak with myself as a senior in high school, I would make sure I am more aware of the journey that lies ahead. I would direct my attention more towards being organized for important deadlines as well as for main events such as orientation and advisor meetings. After admission to the college of choice, do to carefull examination of what best fits my future goals, I would give myself a heads up on how and when to sign up for classes. Already knowing now that if not done as soon as possible, then the classes needed for a desired major may not be obtained when necessary. Ultimately I would make sure that I get ready to interact with many new proffessors' and students from all over the world with very colorful personalities. Then wish myself luck and hope for the best.

Edward

If I where to go back in time to when I was in high school and talk to myself, while knowing what I know now, I would tell myself that college is very different from high school, even more then I would have guessed. I would tell myself that things are going to get tough and but it's for the best and it will only make me a better person. I will tell myself probably the most important thing is to not get behind in the schoolwork. Once that happens things only get harder and it will take a lot of work and self discipline to get caught back up. I would tell myself that while schoolwork is very important, it is important to also have some fun and be able to relax. I would tell myself that if all I did was schoolwork and never relaxed and had some fun, college would be something that I would hate and that's not right at all. I would tell myself that first and foremost do the schoolwork and get it done, then relax and have some fun.

Kayla

If I would have been lucky enough to know as a senior what I know now I would seriously reconsider what I have done with my college education so far. I realize that the dreams I thought I had as a senior will not always get you exactly where you want to be and as you grow up you change your mind. If I would have known I would change my mind I would not have waited until my fourth semester of school to change my major to something that I am better able to accomplish. I would also reconsider the ways I handled the stress of classes and would have been more prepared to balance. But I wouldn't trade my of my experiences at Indiana State for anything because I love the comfort of small classes and great professors.

Callie

At the end of high school, I was anxious to start college and petrified at the notion that I will be literally on my own with none of my family or friends that I became so close with. The final night before I made my journey from my comfortable cozy home life to the enigma of college living, I was not able to sleep due to the state of panic that overwhelmed me because I felt that I was about to take the biggest leap into life that I could imagine. Now that I have experienced college life first hand I would travel back to that sleepless night and reassure that timid girl that everything would be alright, that your family is still there to support you, and you will gain so many new friends through activities and student organizations that you will be apart of that you never knew existed. College offers a person so many perspectives that can lead you on the path that you desire most and teach subjects that you have never considered. College is not just another chapter of life, it is a journey through all the dimensions of one?s self.

Kristina

Growing up in high school was very difficult. When it came time to need help, I was unable to depend on anyone other than myself. Knowing what I know now about the college experience, there is so much advise I would give myself if I had the chance to go back. I would keep myself focused more than I did when I was in high school. I would also take advantage of the activities such as, student council, class officers, and scholarships that would help fund college. I would also have played some kind of sport. I would love to go back and do things differently, but I can't. My advise to any high school senior is to think of your future plans, becasue it's difficult planning the future for college when high school is over.
