What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Elizabeth

While my classes have of course been valuable, I think my best learning experiences have been when I'm out of them. Evenings after class, sitting in the dining hall, I've met hundreds of people and flirted with their viewpoints and research, beliefs and complaints. I get snippets of the lives of thousands of students every day just by walking to class. The thing that has most developed through my college experience is my willingness to learn; I'm more hungry for information now that I have a slight understanding of how much of it is out there. I have a healthier appreciation and desire for the experiences of other cultures and fields of study. Perhaps my classes teach me how to silkscreen and apply metaphor, but my time outside the class has been a rapid succession of crashcourses on physics, environmental impact, psychology, animal behavior, brain chemistry, survival technique, home economics, and of course, gender studies. It's the liberal arts experience that will surely leave me completely transformed.

College has been one of the most important experiences in my life so far. I've gotten a well-rounded education, a great life experience with my new tutoring job, and the knowledge that I need in order to progress in life. I feel that the education that I've received at my community college has been priceless and incomparable to anything else because it's given me the tools that I need in order to continue with my career goal of being a mathematics professor on a university level. The experiences that I've had have not only helped me move forward educationally and career-wise, but also emotionally. I've become a more independent human-being, more self-reliant, and I have learned the value of money and success, but most importantly, life and family.

My short time here at Indiana University has been beyond amazing. I have grown up here more in the last six months than in my entire life. Not only have I become more knowledgable through my studies but I have also found what is really important to me in my life. Last semester I took classes that were challenging yet interesting. I earned a 3.9 grade point average and hope to continue this throughout the semesters to come. As a biology major I have already heard of so many amazing research and internship opportunities and I cannot wait to branch out even more and try these within the next few years. Also in my time here, I have realized how very important my family is to me. My family has always been extremely close and unfortunately my parents and sister moved to St.Thomas from Indianapolis this past summer. I always thought I was independent and though I am fully capable of taking care of myself while at school I have realized how very important the relationship with my family really is to me. I know that when I graduate I want to be much closer to my family!

While viewed by many as "the glory days," my college experience has been so much more that a marathon of crazy nights. As a senior, I can confidently look back upon the past four years with the knowledge that I am a better version of me than the first day of freshman year. College is about growing up, making mistakes (both big and small), passionately pursuing a goal, making new friends that will last a life time, learning how to be productive, living with roommates, falling in love, mending broken hearts, exploring a new part of the counrty or even world, becoming addicted to lattes, experiencing my first snow day, opening my mind, expanding my horizons, taking a ballroom dance class, playing in an orchestra, pulling all-nighters studying for finals, living it up on the weekends, collaborationg with classmates to present a project, and soaking in the beauty of campus in the fall. But most importantly, my college experience has been about discovery of the individual I desire to become, and gaining the knowledge and confidence that will allow me to not only follow, but live out my dreams.

Tiffany

College has help me develop as a person. I feel more independent and I feel like I will be able to be successful later in life. I have met so many new people and been exposed to many new things that I would not have had I not gone to college.

Cristina

I have gotten resposability skills that i will definitely need in the future. I have learned to do things for myself and to not depend on too much on other people. To use my time wisely and to always stay on top of things.

Jasmine

The college experience has been most valuable to me in terms of protection. While attending a vocational school I learned and will shortly recieve my license to become a Nail Technician. With a Nail Technician license I have the protection of knowing I will never have to solely be out of a job. It remains valuable to me for the support as well, this license will show me hard work can acomplish great goals in life all you have to do is focus and maintain an inspiration for what you are striving to achieve.

Alyssa

To be an adult and maturing is what I have gotten out of my college experience so far. My parents may have been supportive but attending and striving are aspects I have done completely on my own. Day by day is how I take my new adventure and there are many more lessons to be learned as I continue my education. Attending college tends to be held very valueable for myself simply because I would love for my children to have more than what I did when I was younger. I have been a fan to take your parents advise and try to simply "do better" or "succeed". Above all I would enjoy to see my kids succeed more than myself.

Brittany

College has been an overall great experience for me personally. I have learned how to manage money and live successfully on my own. College has made me a very responsible person in every part of my life. I have meet people from all over the United States who have became my closest friends. While at IU I have discovered new professional goals and completed classes and an internship as steps in completing my goal of working in Cardiopulmonary Rehab at a hospital in the years to come. In the past 2 and half years I have discovered a lot about myself and who I want to be. The top 3 things I have gotten from being here are a strong work ethic, great social, academic, community service & professional opportunities, and life skills all of which will stay with me and continue to help me succeed in the future. I am very confident that the things I am learning will lead to my success in improving the quality of life of the patients I work with in the future years.

Michael

I enrolled at JDCC as a new student for the fall semester 2010. So far, my experience with the college and its culture has been positive. It is encouraging to meet with other students who are in the same boat and realize that, for the most part, we have chosen this academic ball and chain as a method of improving our lot in life and are striving for a common goal, regardless of the cost. It has been valuable to attend college because education is the key that will open doors and make dreams come true. My dream job, and I believe it will be attainable, is to become a registered nurse and work in surgery. This thought first entered into my mind when I was living in Myanmar, SE Asia and working with Burmese children who were born with cleft lip. My mission is to enjoy a rewarding life of service, first of all to my wife and family as well as to others with whom I work with and encounter. Through careful time and priority management, I hope to realize this goal as I pursue a career in nursing.

jacob

I learn so much from school and planning on learning more. I am planning on going to on a 4year college just because I love learning.

Monique

The most valuable aspect of my college years are my daughter's watching there mother better herself and never giving up. I had my first daughter when I was in highschool, that caused me to start school later than most of my peers. I have had many struggles but have never given up on my dream of becoming a registered nurse. My only regret in this process was not letting my father watch me walk across that stage. I know that he is watching me in heaven and that along with my children help keep me motivated to achieve greatness and nothing less.

Dominique

I have gained so much more than an education because of my college experience. I have become a more dedicated and more aware of myself and my future. I have learned how to work together with people by being on the cross country team. I have also learned the importance of time management because while attending school and participating in cross country, I also have a job working at the YMCA. I have been able to feel confident in my studies through my hard work and determination. As a result i currently have a 3.8 GPA. It has been extremely valuable to attend college because i have been able to become a useful part of society and will benefit the society in the future. This is why college is very important and why there is a lot to gain from attending higher education.

Shareyna

I had originally attended IU as a member of the Women’s Field Hockey team. Unfortunately after our fall season I have decided that I would no longer wish to be a part of it. Although from this experience I have been able to meet twenty other individuals that I would consider my family, a home away from home. Furthermore, my academic experience has been phenomenal. I struggled with selecting a major, but finally found the appropriate one for me from the large variety provided. The program I especially love is the option of building your own major if you cannot find one from the available options. I have been exposed to a variety of cultures and opportunities that I would not have been able to have anywhere else. Environmental management is my dream major and I could not have discovered it in better way than by Indiana’s growing “green” expansion of the campus. This increasing awareness of making a green change is one of my greatest loves of Indiana.

charlene

I am currently at the University of Arizona and i have discovered it is to big for my tastes. I love being on the track team and getting to meet lots of new people. I really learned how to be responsible and function on my own.

jack

During college I have met several new friends, but the most valuable part of the experience so far has been the actual education itself. It is very rewarding to have new found knowledge that others have but I was unaware of. Towards the end of high school all of my classes were progressing at the rate of the slowest student. This meant that I had pratically nothing to do and learned very little. In other words, it was kind of a waste of time. In contrast to this, my time spent at the community college has been challenging and very informative. Each course that I have taken has expanded on things that I thought I knew or had heard of. I have a much better understanding of how the world and other things work and can now clearly see the importance of obtaining a formal education.

Elizabeth

My experience at Indiana University has changed my life. I have learned invaluable lessons, both inside and outside of the classroom. I have experienced highs and lows, all of which have taught me how to persevere and better myself. The atmosphere, educators, and students at Indiana University have helped shaped me into the academic and person I am. I love being on campus, taking classes, and being involved in university activites. I have learned life lessons and career skills I will use for the rest of my life. I plan on continuing my learning for the remaining two years I have at Indiana University.

Masie

During my first semester of college I have learned how to manage my time properly. I have become much more organized and committed to my school work. However, the biggest thing I have gotten out of college are all the new friends I have made through class, dorm life, and the women's rugby team. My time at college has been valuable because it is helping me figure out the carreer I wish to pursue.

Marlon

My college experince is been the best. I love collage live. I have learn about myself and the most important thing i have learn how to leave in my own.

David

Attending college has given me the opportunity to explore a huge range of possibilities and personalities. On any given day there are myriad things to do that interest me whether it's IM sports, various club meetings, or even just hanging out at some event on campus. There always seems to be something going on. Pairing that experience with being able to learn all about something I'm really interested in creates the true value in the whole experience.

Mitch

I don't believe that college has given me the step up I've desired from my transition out of High School. Attending the best known and highest ranking public school in Indiana, my big state university has had little change in atmosphere while proffessors seem hardly different from my high school teachers. Despite this being said I can see college as a new way to challenge myself academically, something I never put much effort into. I've understood that school is not all that difficult, but the more effort you put into it the greater results will become. The focus has centered to myself and only me as responsible for my life from here on out. At first I didn't recognize the responsibility thrust upon me because of the haze of a new school, new people, and a new enviroment. Now these things have cleared and I have begun to value myself as a college student who needs to be accomplished and successful as I lay the foundations of my future career and self.

Andrea

I did not graduate from high school, in fact I dropped out after my sophomore year. However, it did not take me long to realize how important an education is in order to be a successful and contributing member of society. Ultimatley, I obtained my GED in August of 2005 and began my journey to my career path. The most important thing I have achieved during my college experience is a well rounded education. I have not only learned new subjects, but I have also been exposed to a diverse and interesting community of college students. I have developed new relationships, and I have learned that I truly enjoy learning about new subjects and meeting new people. I have learned that I am responsible for my future and if I want to succeed in life, I must work hard and be dedicated to my educational goals. My college experience has been valuable to me because it has allowed me to grow and become a more well rounded person.

Kayla

Coming from a small town in southern Indiana means that I never experienced much diversity. However, Indiana University has made my life more diverse. I have tried foods from different cultures that I have never even heard of, I have made friends of different races and sexual orientations than my own and I have met people from almost every place in the world. These are all things that I could have never experienced in my small town. The diversity and culture I have experienced at Indiana University has made me want to pursue a career that involves international relations of some sort. Even though I am currently majoring in biology and pre-dentistry, I want to turn my goal of becoming a dentist into something that is international, such as working in third world countries. If I had never attended Indiana University, I may have not experienced this diversity. I am grateful that I chose to go there because it has broadened my horizons and my view of the world.

Jeremiah

At first I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do or have any idea what steps to take to get to these goals. I was a lazy kid and didn't have much drive. However, in college I have held multiple positions and taken a lot of classes that have finally led me to what I want to do with my life. College has been great for directing me on the path I should take and making me a self-motivated student.

Hannah

My first day of college I was scared out of my mind. I had an emotional goodbye with my parents which made me wonder how I would live without my family (we are all very close). I was scared because financially we were struggling and because I now had to become more resourceful--my dad would not be there to clean up my mess. After a few weeks in college, I learned to become more assertive and dependent on myself. I found my own job, managed to acheive all As and one pathetic grade (C) in my math class, and I also was able to care for myself perfectly fine (I made/bought my own meals, cleaned my dorm, woke up on time for classes and church, etc.). College had transformed me into an assertive person. In fact, I was even able to organize a mini protest against anti-Semitic vandalism that had occurred on campus. Long story short, college has made me a different person. IU has given me direction in life and helped me to become more organized and self-assured. For all of this, I am very thankful.

Mike

My college experience has exposed me to many different people. I have changed as a person from all the people who have made tiny impacts on me. I have become more caring and giving thanks to the people who have shown me what true sacrifice and pain is. Primarily, I have gotten an amazing education out of college. Concepts and ideas I could not understand previously are making sense to me now. I have become a better student thanks to the professors who have pushed me. College has shown me various people and cultures. It has provided me with the first steps into real life. It is valuable because it is giving me new views on life. I am able to use various new ideas to take on problems. It has change me to become a better person. I am more reliable and accoutnable now. I am able to strive fro excellence with the confidence that college has given me. I have also met many people that will lead to networking people. There are many people who I am now able to contact for support in future goals.

Ryan

I have gained cultural knowledge and the ability to accept those with differing views on life than I. Working with fellow students from different parts of the country and world has given me tremendous insight into not only how others think, but also how I think - a skill that is critical for my studies in communications and culture. The resources available to the students has also made IU an invaluable part of my social, academic, and educational life. I have worked on original Social Networking website up-starts, trained for two years with the Parkour and Freerunning Club, acted in several films - many of which required me to train various martial arts, played music with talented students and locals, and have been a regular at local house shows - exposing me to new music I would have otherwise never heard. Indiana University is by no means a place to go for just an education. What I have learned outside the classroom has been at least as important as my academics, and possibly even more so. College is way more than just a place to learn - It is where people go to figure out who they are, and I have undoubtedly succeeded.

Daniel

As and incoming freshman into college this semester I began in full awareness that there would be challenges. Having undergone muscular severing in the eyes as an infant and having struggled through life visually impaired, the thought of needing to obtain the reading and comprehension level necessary to successfully complete my coursework seemed daunting. In my efforts to create a college experience that would be more supportive to my disability and creative in ways or means that could establish me more equally in the academic setting I sought support services offered at my school. Learning I would be able to negotiate additional time for test taking and with my assignments was significant. Also working with each of my instructors to clearly express my visual impairment and its limitations was beneficial. After working through several weeks of classes, and still needing additional resourceful means of obtaining the material, I was assisted by a fellow student who provides ‘note-taker’ support for me class. Learning to clearly communicate my needs, and then move through a phase of assessment, and then revising my communications, has been valuable.

Johanna

I have gotten so many experiences here that I don't think I would've gotten anywhere else. There is such a huge pool of creativity and art around here, it's impossible to not get involved in some of it, and it has always been incredibly rewarding. I was just recently in a webseries that just finished principal photography called Student Seven (www.studentseven.com), and meeting the rest of the cast, the production crew, the people that came to teach us fight choreography and parkour, was an experience like none other. And this was just a student-made production! That was an incredibly valuable experience that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. And being at such a large school, most people would say it is very impersonal because you don't know who anyone is, but it's surprisingly easy to meet people, to make connections, and lasting connections here that I don't think anyone would expect. I love this place.

Jessica

College held a lot of change for me, and with change came responsibility. I became responsible for myself, which wasn’t entirely true in high school. In college, I had to choose my major, I had to choose my classes and I had to make myself go to them. Even though college increased the amount of responsibility in my life, I also came out of my shell. I went to school without any of my close friends, so I had to make new ones. I could no longer be the introvert I was comfortable with being. My outgoing and personable side really came out. I made friends and even joined a sorority. I am no longer the shy girl, who didn’t branch out in high school. My first year of college may have been a lot of change, but I wouldn’t do it any differently. I have learned a lot in my classes and how to manage my time so that I do well in them. However, college has also taught me a vast amount about myself. For that I am truly thankful and can’t wait to continue this amazing journey and see where else I go.

Caitlin

I have learned a lot about myself through this time in college. I have learned about so many things in literature, history and math. I have learned that it is okay to be myself and still be considered social. I have met so many great people in college, who I care about greatly and hopefully care about me in the same way. IU has been a great college because it has provided me the opportunities I needed to succeed. I am certain that the lessons I learned on campus and off will stick with me throughout my life. I would not change it for the world.

Zach

A good and applicable education is priority in my life and that is exactly what I have attained so far here at Indiana University. The instructors are wonderful, the course work is challenging but offers rich mental stimulation, and there is nothing that can compare to the advising staff here. Education is number one, but IU has a fantastic social atmosphere that completes the package. Lavish frat parties, holiday gatherings like Halloween and Ugly Christmas Sweater parties, and local restaurants sum up a college experience like none other. I have been in many clubs and watched sports events, Little 5, and even concerts and it all has contributed to my wonderful college experience. The main thing everyone wants when coming to college is opportunities, and I have found just that at Indiana University.

Amanda

Through my experiences here at Indiana University I have found myself and what I want in the future. I have had amazing experiences here! I have met so many people with very diverse points of view and backgrounds. I have worked here as a resident assistant for two years. This job has allowed me to help in the development of other students here at IU, as well as my own development. It has challenged me and taught me how to be an independent woman. It has also helped me decide what career path I want to pursue in the future. After Indiana University I hope to attend graduate school in order to further my education and pursue the career of counseling psychology. I think IU prepared me very well to continue on to graduate school and for life!

Brianna

I have not attended college. If I am able to I know that I would've gotten social skills. and a education. It is very valuable to attend college because you need a degree to get many places in life.

Kristin

I have learned so much more than I ever did in high school because the classes are much more challenging and actually require a lot of studying. Since I go to a community college I haven't actually made a large amount more of friends, but I am definitely meeting a lot of people. At the college I attend all freshman are required to take a College 101 course, which was actually extremely helpful because it made me learn a lot about myself and my learning styles. It also taught me how to study in a much more productive way than I ever have before. I want to transfer to a four year university next year so I think starting out at a smaller school is just warming me up to the full college experience and I am as ready as ever to go to a university and get the full college experience with living on campus and everything. Attending even just community college has been very valuable because I am learning so much and it's really preparing me for the real world and getting started with my career.

Alex

I have not been attending college for an extended amount of time, but I realize that a college education will open an inumerable amount of doors in my future. The purpose of education is to gain knowledge for future use in our everyday lives. My education will give me the opportunity to get a job that I want and like. It will also give me the possibility of working with the most accredited people in my field. I hope that my diligence in my school work will pay off with a respectable career, and a good living in the future.

Daphnie

I have just recently enrolled in college . I have not yet started my first semester. So far, I am excited to start and enjoy this experience very much. It has helped me feel more self-worth. It has helped me set a good path to success. I have also learned that college is not as scary as it seems!

Jessica

What I have gotten out of my college experience is a great work ethic and dedication. I have learned so much from all of my professors. I have learned strong dedication to my schoolwork and I put forth my best effort. I am very dedicated to my job at school where I work fifteens hours a week spending time assisting other students in the campus library. My social involvement has expanded greatly. I am a member of Best Buddies where I have a special needs friend who has become one of my closest friends. I also have joined our club gymnastics team. I also enjoy volunteering at the local animal shelter. It has been extremely valuable to attend because it it truly one of the best times of your life and a major life experience. It allows you to develop your interest on a whole new level and decide where in life you want to go. College for me has been a major stepping stone, it has helped me to develop into a well rounded individual, an adult, and a compassionate person. Without college I would not be on the personal level that I am today.

Daniel

I have made new friendships that will last a lifetime and have learned a great deal about a variety of subjects while attending class and listening to discussions.

Qiang

A sense of accomplishment that I haven't felt from anything else that I have done: Confidence. Use this skill/characteristic that I learned from universities to help others and to get aroid of nerves when I showing my opinions or displaying my achievement to any audience. Knowing I can take care of myself and be on my own during college. Then I can be one what I want to be in a stress-less direction!

Arianna

My first day of college was an unforgettable experience. Meeting my floormates, going to my very first party, attending a lecture of 250 students. This was all new and exciting for me, as well as other college students. From this experience, I've simply gained freedom. Not just the freedom of being away from my parents telling me to go grocery shopping with them or doing the dishes after a nice family dinner, and not the freedom of going to parties with friends until the break of dawn. Rather, this is the freedom to be myself. All my life I have lived under the roof of others, and family has been a huge value of mine. As of now, I am a new person who is on my own figuring out the ups and downs of life. The freedom I have to fail or succeed, to try things or to hold back, and the freedom to live as I am; my own authoritative figure. It is a privalege to attend college, living and learning about the atmosphere, and I now am able to gain and value freedom, while understanding that it is upon me to make big life decisions.

Breanne

In my family school is not a popular thing. My parents both dropped out of highschool in their senior year. I However, did not give up on education. In fact, I desire to be a teacher and make education enjoyable for others. I am going to college to become an educated citizen and to learn how to teach others to do so. So far, college has been of great value to me because I have recieved guidance, had character growth, and had the chance to experience something worth a lot. College has provided me with the resourses and information to pursue my career choice. I have gain experience working with children and writing lesson plans. College has also been a place of great character growth. Living in the dorms and being around a very diverse crowd gives me the opportunity to share my values and encourage others to succeed. This experience is so valueable to me because its unique; not everyone gets a chance to go to college. I hope to show my family and community that knowledge is amazing

Tony

I have learned that life is to short to be worrying about the things you don’t have, but worry about the things you are trying to achieve, and this has help me become the person I am today. I am here at Indiana University to create a holistic lifestyle for myself and to limit the financial struggles that some of my family members are having. This has been valuable because I am the first to attend college out of my family, and is looked at as a role model to the younger generation. This college experience thus far has helped me keep a focused and goal oriented mind set for plans after my collegiate years.

Alexis

When I started attending IU, I was very shy, always polite, and not very confident in myself and the decision to major in theatre. But after spending just a little over two months here, I am more sure of myself than ever. My theatre classes have made me a more confident and educated performer, and I have learned that people would rather see me as the fun, exciting person I am rather than just nice and polite. Being away from my family for extended period for the first time was difficult at first, but it forced me to grow up and become independent with matters like banking, buying groceries, and transportation. I can't believe I've learned this muchin only two months, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Aleksandra

Going here I have been able to make friends that will last a lifetime. When I first came here I was so shy and unwilling to talk to anyone. Going here has helped me break out of that shell and just be myself. Besides the academic experience, IU has been a life experience. I have grown up so much and am an entirely different person than when I first came. I wouldn't change what I had here for the world.

Brianna

College has provided numerous opportunities for me to explore new subjects, make new friends, and grow as a person. Through my college experience, I have learned to defend an argument logically and persuasively, to respect other people's opinions, and to be a strong leader. My professors have challenged me and encouraged me to fulfill my potential. They have also opened my eyes to an entirely new way of looking at the world around me. For example, I used to think that history, while interesting, had little if any direct or practical importance today. Some of the best history teachers I have ever encountered completely changed my mind. They taught me that the great ideas of the past provided the foundations for all of Western Civilization; only by understanding them can we understand the present and build a strong future for those who come after us. My college education has been valuable for its own sake, not merely for the career preparation inherent in the experience. In pursuit of a higher education, I've learned how to think at a higher level. This ability will serve me well all through my life.

Mollie

From going away to college I have learned many things and have grown up a lot in the process. I feel that because I have lived in Indiana most of my life I have been very sheltered to how the world really is. I have learned how to be very self-reliant and how to do things on my own. I was very restricted by my parents' rules while growing up in their home, and being in college has taught me the responsibility and self-accountability that I feel I was lacking before. Since college, I have been responsible for doing my homework on time, studying the appropriate amount of time for tests, and going to bed at a decent hour. I am also responsible for my meals, getting myself to school, and contacting my teachers if I have to miss class for any reason. My college experience has been valuable because I don't believe that I would have had the same amount of personal growth if I had stayed at home and attended community college.

Tucker

College has been such a great experience in the first couple of months. The best thing has been getting involved with campus church group, campus crusade for christ, and strengthening my faith. The people I have met in this organization have been so good to me and have become some of my best friends. My psychology class has opened my eyes to the ways of learning, which has helped me improve my study habits. Overall Indiana University Bloomington is a great place to be.

Allison

My college experience is one I will cherish for the rest of my life. Not only did I gain knowledge academically, I feel like I have been able to learn who I am as a person. One of the many strengths that IU possesses is it's diverse population. When I joined the IU community, I felt that there was a place/group for everyone. I was able to meet so many great people that proudly expressed their different cultures and values. In addition, I like that the Greek community does not run the campus. Personally, I was a part of a sorority, but that was completely my choice. I felt no pressure or obligation to join. Although I joined a soroity, I was able to keep in touch with my friends that did not participate in the Greek community. I have visited other campuses whose campus thrives on sororities and fraternities. I am proud and grateful that IU is not one. In closing, IU's diverse community, large campus, and strong staff of professors gave me more than I expected to gain as a person and student. If I could do it over, IU would be my first choice.

James

My college expereince has greatly enriched my life. At Indiana University, I learned how to learn. My professors made me think and learn to express my thoughts both verbally and in written forms. I have utilized my degree to become a commissioned officer in the military. I am currently drawing my military retirement. I am also maintaining my knowledge of my two majors, by continually reading and thinking about the new advances in both areas. My time at Indiana University has made me into a life time learner.
