Ithaca College Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Ally

Not entirely. We have a wide range of economic status at Ithaca.

Miranda

There are those people.

Jamie

We have a collection of a variety of different types of people, those I mentioned above, included. However, of course not everyone who attends Ithaca College smokes weed or is a hippie.

Heather

Sometimes

Ashley

There are a lot of people at Ithaca similar to the stereotypes, but not everyone.

Peter

Absolutely not. We are much cooler than them

Emily

To a certain extent, these stereotypes hold true. Many students fit into one of three catogories on campus (hippie, jock, or music kid), but it isn't really troublesome since most people have diverse groups of friends, or are in many different "circles" of friends.

Zack

as accurate as stereotypes usually are.

Lee

to some extent, yes. but most students are on financial aid.

Mary

Kind of, though we could find a large percentage of students who do fall into these categories, I wouldn't generalize about the whole student population, and I don't think it defines Ithaca College.

tony

yes

Evelyn

For the most part students are white, but I wouldn't say the are rich. I would say that are more middle class.

Lester

I think these stereotypes are possibly even understated. I come from an area of the country that has been listed multiple times in magazines like "high times" as the best region for pot in the U.S. Honestly i'm not exactly sure why since i dont smoke and think its pretty disgusting, but i dont really care that other people do it. The point is that literally, and i'm not at all exaggerating in any way at all, every single person i've met here smokes pot.

Lauren

They are somewhat accurate if you had to classify the types of people that go here.

Catherine

The split between hippies and jocks it true. I would say though that the amount of hippies on campus has decreased, and it is more so everyone wears Bomber sweats to class and sweat bands. Or we have tons of girls with UGGs and tights walking around, who do not fit in with the beautiful scenery of upstate New York.

Ali

No...well surrounding Ithaca there isn't much, but Ithaca itself is wonderful because it is a mix of city and suburb with a lot always going on. There is a townie population of hippies but there also are tons of professors among lots of other occupations. Ithaca College has a huge mix of students..name a type of student we probably have it. We have no rival with Cornell since we are not Ivy League or D1 sports. Also, we have so many different majors that it adds to the wide variety of students.

Beth

Yes!

katie

some, like smoking pot and there are alot of hippies

Greg

I honestly do feel that these stereotypes represent Ithaca College students fairly well.

Laura

Neither of them are accurate. Ithaca College has its strengths and weaknesses, as does Cornell. Cornell is very strong in the sciences, and Ithaca has excellent communications, physical therapy, and theater programs to name a few. They are simply different - end of story. As with any school, if you're looking for drugs and alcohol, it's accessible. If not, you won't notice it.

Melanie

To an extent. A lot of the class diversity isn't seen because the students are still white. There are so few minorities that they tend to flock to one another and the poor white students don't feel they fit in anywhere. Not all the minorities are poor and a good portion of them come from well off families either in the US or abroad.

margot

Not for most of the population, but I definitely think that a liberal and hippie mentality is accurate for a lot of the students

Jordan

Yes and no, there are plenty of these stereotypes around, however myself and many of my friends do not fit these stereotypes.

Douglas

It is true for many people, but many of my best friends at the college are proud conservatives who like Ithaca but do not agree with many of their fellow students' political views.

Aaron

To a degree, most of the stereotypes are true. That is, certain areas in the community or groups of people are certainly very liberal, very outspoken, and one can often smell pot wafting through the air on a friday afternoon. However, if one does not fit into any of these criteria, s/he need to pay it any heed and still find a perfect niche in the school. As far as personality is concerned, Ithaca is pretty diverse.

Jesse

No, the majority of students are athletes, not as much of a theatre school as it comes off to be, very diverse, and well rounded

Dan

Some of them are, just like any other place.

Jessie

No, not at all.... Unfortunately

Terry

Well, there is a good amount of truth to these stereotypes, but like anything, they're by no means the rule. IC has a lot of jocks, ignorant, racist bastards, preps, and general wastes-of-life. oh, and physical therapy majors. For some reason, there are a lot of them. It's nice to have them around. They're like free doctors.

Alex

There is something to say for the different atmosphere in Ithaca. If you are going to have an off-beat personality, it's one of the easier places to do so. I can't say if the college has more more of a "hippie" population as I haven't been to school anywhere else. They say we aren't as liberal as people think we are, there's a good number of conservatives here.

Meg

We do have a larger number of liberals than other colleges and a lot of people from Long Island and New Jersey. But I think the perception that there are a lot of hippies is inaccurate. We are more environmentally conscious at Ithaca, but seriously hard core hippies (as in dreads and no showers) aren't as abundant as you'd think.

Brett

Not true about Cornell. A lot of kids smoke and do drugs but its not that prominent. And its true Ithaca isnt that much of a party school.

Laura

No, but a lot of people are very conscientious of the environment and the world around them.

Claire

to a certain point yeah they are pretty accurate. I mean alot of people here do care alot about saving the planet, and theres definately your grou of people who like to get high on the weekend or whatever, but i'm sure you'd find that at any college.

Lindsey

People are very liberal here, it's true, which is nice, but there are a lot of rich bitches on campus too. There are a few music students and the music program is very good, but it's much more dominated by health sciences and parkies. There are also a lot of jocks which most people don't think about Ithaca.

Jamie

pretty much

Caitlin

some of them are pretty accurate

Kris

Ithaca student do consume more alcohol than most other colleges, you can smell hippies from miles away

Kevin

sometimes

Courtney

..most of the time

Andy

not really, there is a large diverse population of conservatives, liberals, drinkers, pot smokers, people who abstain from drug use, lots of people on financial aid and lots who aren't

Alex

not really, there are just as many hippies as in other schools. but the jock steryotype is dead on.

Melanie

Although it is a very liberal town, there still is a wide array of people here.

Amanda

These stereotypes are accurate with some people, but not with others

Sarah

I think there definitely are a lot of rich&preppy kids and a lot of "hippies." I think a lot of IC people do smoke weed, but it's definitely not the majority-I don't think. IC definitely is not diverse. It's predominantly middle class white kids.

Suzy

Yes and no. There are obviously people that fall under all of these categories, but not everyone does.

Reese

No- while you might find kids wearing birkenstock's not everyone is a hippie. There are many different groups of kids on campus, you'll be able to find your niche somewhere.

Stephanie

I dont really know stereotypes about the students of ithaca but the people tend to be extremely left wing

Betsy

People think that Ithaca is full of "liberal hippies" but we have a lot of international students, student athletes and students who come from a conservative background. We're not all hippies, but Ithaca makes a conscious decision to be more sustainable. The students are a vital part of making sustainability one of Ithaca's focuses. Also there is a ton of financial aid available. As one of the students who did not grow up rich, it is possible to get the great education opportunities at Ithaca if you qualify for financial aid and are willing to work.

Joshua

Ithaca is definitely a hippie town, but at the same time, it's a great college town that has over 30,000 students. Ithaca College has some hippie students, but it's not the majority. Also, we view ourselves as being independent from Cornell and while they are in the Ivy League, we have our own programs that are very reputable.
