What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Rob

I attend Kaplan University Online. I think that the biggest stereotype would be that people that attend college online are older. To an extent, I think that this is correct, however, there are many students right out of high school as well. The online format can work for anyone that wants to attend college around their busy schedule.

The Stereotype of the students at my College is that they are hard working, determined individuals. This stereotype has been proven to be pretty accurate with every student that goes there.

Online colleges are typically viewed as an easy alternative to going to a "real college", and that they can't possibly offer the same things. This couldn't be any further from the truth. When thinking about college, what is it that you think about? You think about having all of your friends, human contact, coffee shops, libraries, fraternities, study groups, tutors, dorms, etc. Well, I have news for you, Kaplan University's online campus offers all of that! The only difference is that your dorm is in the comfort of your own home. When I joined Kaplan University I was amazed at everything that they offer. The seminars are amazing! You can connect with your Professor and hear their voice, as well as chat with your classmates. There are live tutors to help you when you are getting to that frustrating point of not understanding anything. Mentor programs are also offered. Clubs, honor societies, mentor programs, and study groups are all great ways to make friends and stay active in the University’s community. You will certainly make life-long friends. There are always students near you, as well as scattered all across the country. As far as curriculum is concerned, Kaplan is amazing! Upon registration, I was dreading my math class. I thought, “I won’t possibly receive the instruction I need to understand this stuff”. It is the hardest subject for me and I was extremely nervous. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The books that Kaplan provided me explained everything step by step along with a variety of examples. Once, I had a question on a project and “needed my Professor right then”. I hopped onto AIM at 10 o’clock at night, and she was more than happy to help me with my issue. The curriculum is challenging, but with the excellent staff and materials that they provide, they make it easy to follow.

Since I go to an online school, I think stay at home moms are the normal stereo type. I have been at Kaplan University for almost two years now, and I have met all kinds of people. People who work all the time, have children, and a number of other reasons why online school worked best for them.

The stereotype of online students is that the work involved is not as hard as the work in a traditional setting. This is not true. Being an online student you have to be very self motivated and determined. There is no "contact" with other students and instructors and there is no one to turn to for in-person instructions if your happen to get stuck on an assignment.

There is not one type of stereotype while attending Kaplan Univeristy online. You do not get to actually "see" your classmates unless they upload a picture. The students in your online classroom come from various places across the country and ages vary.

There are a lot of moms, older students, single parents, and people from all over the world attending college online with Kaplan. There are people from all walks of life attending online schools. The stereotype of students at Kaplan University is that everyone is older and that this is not their first time in school. Actually, I have many first time college students in classes with me.

At Kaplan or any online university for that matter, the number one stereotype that adult learners run across is that we're all "lazy" because we're not going to traditional campus. The stereotype itself is likely 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} accurate as there are adult learners that don't do their work on time or have help from spouses/realatives/other sources that label the rest of us that actually do our own work. The inaccuracy of the stereotype is just this: it is more economic to go to an online college for your Undergraduate Degree; you save money (gas/room & board/food). You get out of it what you put into it, regardless of traditional or online.

Our school is a widely varied cross of people from those just out of high school to older retired people. Everyone shares the same goals and the mix works really well. Everyone has mutual respect and we all have a great time sharing experiences and helping each other along the way. It's like the great melting pot and we all pull together.
