I call my parents all the time! I didn't call them very often (hardly at all, really) my first 2 years or so of college. I was still enjoying the freedom of not living at home and always having to answer to my parents. Now, though, I call home pretty much every day, sometimes even multiple times a day if I have more things to say. I've found myself wanting to tell me parents about everything that goes on, and I miss them more than I used to. So, I would say that if you don't really feel the urge to call home, that's okay; it may come with time away from home, or it may not. I don't think there is really any sort of maximum or minimum that you could call your parents.
