What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Laura

Look into who stays on campus during the weekend, and see what the common motivation of students is that go to the school. If commuting, look at parking areas, see if they're safe. If living there, consider the meals and who else lives there. Look at the classrooms to see if you would be comfortable there, and see how everyone intereacts with each other walking around campus. See if there are any obvious cliques formed between people, and look to see if there's diversity.

Philip

make sure you, or your child, is comfortable in the environment the college promotes.

Finding the right college is hard for everyone. If a child is undecided as to what they would liket o do in the future, they should go to a community college, and get their liberal arts out of the way. With finanaces the way they are today, a child shouldn't go to an expensive school if they don't know what they want to do. If the child is attached to their family, have them stay close to home. If they want to leave, let them leave. Let the child do what they want to do, and you as parents should support them, and if any conflict arises, talk it out with them so that you can both come to a neutral agreement.

Make sure the environment is the one you are looking for. Think of the size you want, and professors you would liek to work with. Talk to current students to get a feel of what they think of the school. Talk to beth freshman and upperclassmen because freshman tend to have a different opinion than upperclassmen because it is their first year. Also check to see how many students commute and live at home. It will influence your experience. College is mandatory for success in today's day and age. Because of this, one may think it is dry and forced, while the college experience is the contrary. College years are the best time in one's youth he or she will experience and will never forget. The right college depends on a few key factors. Tuition cost is high on the list because struggling to pay for each semester will weigh heavily on one's mind. Proximity to the rest of his or her tasks is also important. Find a school where classes are close to home or at least easy to get to on time from the dorm. Also, the right college depends on major. Certain schools are known for certain majors. For example, Stony Brook is great and known nationwide for it's medical program. Making the most out of college experience depends what is desired. Social life takes stress off of daily tasks. Good professors change a long day of classes into an exciting time. Make friends with people from all different ways of life. One can learn alot from someone from different culture with different customs and beliefs.

To find the right college, you need to go and visit. Take into account the tuition, and loans, and what you will be paying back, and how long it will take. Make sure you will have a secure job, look into the job placement percentages of right after college. For the parents, make sure your child is happy with their decision, and make sure that they have a backup choice. My first choice was originally Hartford, CT. I visited, and absolutely hated it. Make the time to get a tour of the school and if your child is living on campus, ask to see a dorm room, so you know what the living situation will be like.

Attend a college that you are going to be happy at no matter what the cost. It's well worth it despite the stress of the money, which most of the time can be paid back beginning after you graduate. Do research on schools for your major and keep your options open. It's better to apply to too many schools then not enough. Have fun at school, and try not to stress over the little things. Start your work early because due daters tend to creep up quickly and more likely than not the dates will be very close with one another for all your classes.

Choose a college that has the programs and classes that the student likes and join clubs.

Advice for students: Don't base you college choice because your friends are going there or because it's the farthest away from home (yes, you will miss home). Your job as a student is to make sure that you find the right college by looking at its academics, the field in which you think you want to major in, affordability, clubs, life on campus & off campus (easy access to stores or where ever you might want to hang out when you're not on campus) & location location location!! The best advice is to stay over night at your #1 college choice, experience the night life and see if it's something that you are interested in. If it's something you're interested in, then, great! If not, then go to your second choice and if you like that, then great, if not move on to the next college While you are visiting the college, you should sit in on a class to get a bit of what college classes are all about. You have to find out which college best fits you. So before you make a decision, double check everything you like about that college & good luck!

Most incoming students are at the age where all these "big" decisions are to be made in such a short time...it can become very stressful on both the student and parents. College is a big step in one's life, but try to remember that it may take some serious time to consider all your options and what your likes and dislikes are. Overall, you're trying to find a school to match your personality. I would definitely suggest visiting various types of schools to really get a sense of what fits for you. Take everything that you find important to yourself and apply that when trying to find a school. Once you have found a winning choice...make sure to fully engross yourself in everything. In class..speak up! In clubs/activities...find your niche and excel, in your social life...become friends with people that you are proud of, don't become someone your not just to find "friends." The college experience is a time to find out how you truely are so try to embrace every moment of it!

Maria

Visit multiple campuses see which one fits you best. See what degrees, clubs and activites they have to offer. Plan out roughly how much you will be spending at that university, and compare it to others.

Christopher

It is a really great place for students to develop into adults and C.W Post does a great job of doing that. I am very happy with the decision that I have made in my life.

Michela

I would make sure you visit each college you are interested in, and meet with advisors and various other instructors on campus. This way parents and students can get a feel for what it is like on campus, and how that individual school really is. If you are going to be attending a school, you should be absolutely positive that you like it. Be sure to ask questions, and not to hold back.

Karina

From experience i advise that incoming freshmen and parents attend as many open houses as possible. Before applying to a particular school one should evaluate what they want from ate school. You shouldn't settle on a school . Do everything way in advance, trust me you can't go wrong this way. Make sure you stay realistic and try to picture how much debt you will be in at the end of you're education. One should apply to all the programs and schoolarships school s offer in advance. Make sure to attend all orientations, you'll get a chance to ask question to real students who already attend the institution. Apply to as many schools as possible, keep you options open. For example, apply to a saftey school and to schools that you may think are out of reach. It is important to take your time, research and get as much help as possible with the application process.
