What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

What I have gotten out of my college experience so far is a new sense of competition and hardwork. My college experience has humbled me, if anything. When you are surrounded with brilliant people that have clear goals, it is easy to get intimidated and feel quite inferior. However, it has pushed me to want that kind of determination for myself and I believe I am starting to find it. Attending Marquette has been valuable for multiple reasons. The kids that go there are incredible and have a strong sense of family and friendship. They are also extremely generous and helpful and their humility and success would make anyone jealous. I am privileged to be able to attend this university and am hoping with the scholarship that I may continue to do so.

My experience at Marquette University has been valuable to me in so many ways. While the academic coursework has challenged me to work to achieve in the classroom , living in a residence hall has allowed me to gain an understanding of the importance of being a contributing member of the community in which I live. In the dorm I lived in, everyone was new to Marquette. We were all meeting new people and making new friends. These friendships are very special because, for many of us, this was our first time living away from home. We all had to learn to live with people that might not share our beliefs, values, or priorities. Through newly established friendships we learned to live together and support each other’s differences and commonalities. My attendance here has provided me with an experience that has modeled safe, comfortable, and respectful behavior to each member of the community. I have learned to remain faithful to my convictions and priorities while respecting those with different value sets. Compromise and conflict resolution are strategies that I will continue to develop as I pursue my undergraduate degree and eventually my career.

I have cherished my experience thus far at Marquette University for so many reasons. My academic life has been challenged by the standard of excellence the institution holds. My social life as well as religious life has grown significantly because I have been presented with so many opportunities whether it be in volunteer work, attending to basketball games which have been a blast, or just hanging out with the friendliest people I have ever met whom are my best friends. Also, Marquette opened the door for me to try things out such as unique foods, fun activities, and service projects which strengthened my faith. With all these great things, I feel that Marquette so far has been more than just a valuable experience but constructive in my life as well, being helpful with all my relationships I have built since attending this university.

College is a unique part of American society, and the stepping stone between life where one is dependent on their family and the beginning of a self-sufficient lifestyle.

Amanda

Indepedence has been the focal point of my college experience thus far, and learning to become independent also means learning to ask for help. With my school's counseling center and weekly support groups, I have been able to open up about my eating disorders and so have become inspired to help others going through similar struggles. My relationship with myself has grown tremendously - college has helped me discover myself and to find the true me. College has also had a positive impact on my relationships with others, such as family and friends. As I began to tell my story, I found I was not judged as I thought I would be; instead, those around me comforted me with their support, showing by example how to respect each indivdual. My college experience at Marquette has helped me more than I could have ever imagined. And as I study as a student in the nursing program, I look forward to helping others one day as well.

In the time that I have been at Marquette, I have learned many valuable lessons both inside and outside of the classroom. I have been provided with many experiences that I am grateful for. The location of Marquette's campus is one such experience. It is sometimes easy to forget where you are while on campus, but the reality is that Marquette is located in the middle of Milwaukee, the country's fourth poorest city. Before attending Marquette, I had no experience with homeless people in any capacity. Now, however, I encounter them daily on my way to class. This has really given me a lesson in acceptance of those who are unlike me. Marquette's many organizations have provided me a way to learn about people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds. Clubs like the Arab Student Association put on events that have opened my eyes to other people's life experiences, which is something everyone can benefit from. Marquette has shown me that there are many ways to experience life aside from what I am used to. This appreciation for other walks of life is something I hope will only increase in my remaining two years at Marquette.

Jennifer

It was recently that that my mother said to me, ‘It was great to see you blossom over these past few years. You have really grown up to be a great person. I’m so proud of you.’ I realized that I have grown up and changed a lot over the past few years. Going to Marquette has really given me the opportunity to express myself. With the opportunities available at Marquette, I have been able to explore multiple volunteer activities within the city which have opened up my eyes to the importance of public service. I have met many great friends and professors that have encouraged me to excel in my personal and academic pathways. However, the biggest change is that I have become more comfortable with myself; I am more confident, more outgoing and more adventurous. I am willing to take on challenges with confidence in my ability to overcome them. Their value is irreplaceable and certain to make a difference in my future endeavors with both my professional career and future personal life.

I have gained so much by going to college. I have a God given dream to be a nurse in South Africa working as a missionary. If I didn’t go to college I would never have the chance to serve the people of Africa. College is hard work and challenging, but if I never pushed myself where would I get? College has given my life worth. I currently work in a nursing home as a certified nursing assistant, while being a full time nursing student. I love the 12 dementia residents that I care for. To get that job I needed to take a college course. In doing that job I feel I give back to my community. I am also furthering my college education to become a nurse that will not only benefit my community, but other countries.

Bridget

I have met a lot of new friends. I have also met a lot of great faculty members and discovered new ways to learn.

Kayla

I just started college last semester, and I really liked it because I actually missed going to school. I was able to schedule all my classes for in the morining so I had the rest of the day to work. Going to NCTC is nice because its not to big. I graduated from a small school, and I wasn't quite ready to go to a really big college. In college it's just a little different then high school, the teachers still help you with everything you need help on but they expect way more out of you in college. It's nice because they don't put up with any miss behavior in class so the students who really want to be there actually get to learn.

Chrstine

I have learned to work with others and I value their opinions and contributions which has helped me in my work life. I also learned about caring for the whole person not just the disease the person has.

Erin

From my college experiences, I've learned more about myself and other people. I've learned that we are all different and have to recognize that in order to work together responsibly. If we don't acknowledge that others have different valid values and accept that fact, we cannot live in peace. This social revelation brought on by all the different people Marquette University attracts supplements my education in understanding different cultures and how to create peaceful resoultions in the face of conflict that I am taking on with my Political Science and Anthropology majors. Being able to see how my peers intereact and respond to each other, despite their differences is giving me a foundation to deal with cultures on a larger scale.

Marquette University is much more than an academic facility, it’s a place of intellectual, physical, and spiritual growth. As an aspiring Physician Assistant, I am taught valuable knowledge about human anatomy and medicine that we can apply to our lives. Here’s an example: when you “hit your funny bone” you’re actually wedging the ulnar nerve in between the olecranon process and humerus, which causes a horrible tingling sensation in your pinky and only half of your ring finger. It’s true! Thanks to Dr. Cullinan (the coolest professor ever), now y’all know. Additionally, attending Marquette has given me the support I need to independently make responsible decisions. MU has helped me realize that life isn’t about partying - it’s about focusing on what’s really important. For me, I’ve chosen to focus on my faith and future career. Marquette has helped me to strengthen my relationship with God through Campus Ministries. I believe the core of every person comes from their faith – no matter the denomination - and I feel blessed to be at an institution that gives me these resources I need to find myself and continue to grow intellectually, physically, and spiritually.

Miranie

This will be my first year as a full time student. I want to make the most out of this college experience. I look foward to attending college full time and getting closer to achieving my goal.

Ashley

I have personally gained an immense amount of knowledge not only about becoming a nurse, but about myself. I have found out that any class is possible with effort, that signing up for a tutor does not mean that you are dumb but that you are smart enough to know that you need help and that living with a roommate at college is not all fun and games. Every person will experience college differently and that is the beauty of it; whatever you put into college is what you will get in return, which really holds true with anything that you do. I am so greatful that I am able to attend a four year college and for the sacrifices my parents take every day to raise my severely handicap brother with no help. My parents are truly my hero and college has really shown me how much that they have done for me and my siblings.

Cara

I think I have learned more in my first year of college than I have in almost my entire life. While I learned so much from my parents and teachers growing up, there was so much left that I had to learn by going away from home to live and learn on my own. Marquette has taught me how to be a better student, friend, family member, and Catholic. My Marquette experience has already been extremely valuable as it has allowed me to develop into a kind, smart, conscientious adult that I now get to be for the rest of my life. The College of Health Sciences has afforded me excellent educational opportunities as well as professional ones, helping me get a foot into the working world. All the professors and students are excellent people, and have provided me with friends and peers who genuinely care about me and my well-being. Needless to say, Marquette overall has helped me to develop into an adult and to build relationships and professional foundations that will last a lifetime.

Rebecca

I have gotten to know who I am and grow.

Jeanna

College has been valuable to me because it really opened my eyes up to the world around me. I grew up in a middle class area and went to a good high school with those who were also well off. I really didn't have much of an idea what life was like for those who weren't as well off. Throught Marquette, not only got to know people in my classes who were from many different areas and their views on life and their backgrounds, but I also had the ability to volunteer in an inner city Milwaukee nursing home in which I played games with those who lived there and learned about their backgrounds and childhoods from the games we played. These experiences showed my much different ways at looking at things in life and that my point of view is very limited. There is much we can all learn from each other if we just stop and listen and take into account what others have to say. In sum, I not only have taken away what I have learned from books in class, but also from those I have met along the way.

Gina

I've really learned to be independent and stand up for what I believe in. I've really been able to come to terms with what my values are in life and how to live them. Marquette has offered me a way to think boradly about life but still provide an academic backbone to do well in my professional field.

Paige

I enjoy every minute that I spend at school. I love my dorm, my friends, my major and the campus. At Marquette, we are in the middle of the city and I would not have it any other way. There is always something to do and something to learn. I am a physiological sciences major and the classes I am taking are getting me excited about the future. I have definitely learned a lot in my three semesters at MU, not only about science and other subjects, but about myself. This is what I am most grateful for, I learned that I am capable of almost anything if I just work at it and that I am stronger than I think.

Courtney

I have gotten a since of belonging at college. I have decided to serve the lord while in college and couldnt ask for a better life.

Catherine

I have found myself in my college experience. In the short time I have attended Marquette University, I have been blessed with numerous opportunities that have changed my life. From volunteering, to traveling the country with the women's volleyball team, I could not ask for a better freshman experience. My education is one of the most important values I posess, and Marquette provides an excellent learning environment where I am able to grow through class and experience. I have made life long friends, received a supurb education, and had experiences of a lifetime at Marquette, and I am only a freshman. I can not wait to see what the future holds, and knowing Marquette, the future is looking bright.

Alexis

I learned to be independent. I learned to get along with a roommate. I learned to self-motivate. I learned how to be a better writer. I learned how to read and interpret brain signals. I learned differential equations. I held my first professional job. I prepared for applying to an internship or job. I built a network. I am at Marquette University. I am a biomedical engineering major. I am becoming a better me.

Amanda

During the whole process, from beginning applications to first day of classes, it was a great experience. I have learned a lot about myself and what I enjoy doing. The admissions counsellors helped me to find something I truly love to do, and for that I am grateful.

Faye

From my college experience, I grown so much as a person. I have learned how to deal with people I would not normally be exposed to, forced to live with, or wanted to be around. I have learned the importance of friends and a shoulder to cry on when everything seems overwhelming. I have learned I am just like my mother in more ways than I would like to admit. I have learned the crucial and horrible truth of procrastination. I have learned how to live safely in a large city a long way from home. I have learned responsibility in everything I do. I have learned maturity. I have learned to always have 2 sets of sheets, a large laundry basket, and 2 pairs of shower shoes. I have learned how I best study and learn. I have learned that I am not, in fact, capable of getting along with everyone. I have learned the importance of communication. I have learned to take action and do things for myself, things that make me happy. I have learned to be myself in every thing that I do. I have grown to a person that I am proud to be.

Charles

I have found out a lot about who I am as a person, and what I have to offer the world. Marquette has given me a real understanding of my weaknesses and failures, and how to overcome them. I have developed a great system of friends and connections at Marquette, and learned to be self-reliant and dependable.

Hannah

Just last month, I lost my father to complications due to leukemia. It has been a tragic past few weeks, but returning to Marquette has helped me to realize exactly why I attended the university in the first place. I have come to recognize a sense of self that I have developed while in school, something of which I have lacked up until this point in my life. I have questioned life and its meaning ever since I attended Marquette last year, and these questions were fueled by the support of my professors and the teachings in their lectures. It is through these questions that I have grown, not only intellectually, but also emotionally and spiritually. Marquette has taught me how to think, not what to think, and I have found solace in that philosophy. Through my anger, frustration, and utter sorrow, I have been encouraged to question the meaning of life. And, to be able to take the education that I have received in all of my courses to ponder these questions, that is what I truly value most out of my education thus far, and I would not have recieved this education anywhere else other than at Marquette.

Elizabeth

My college experience has taught me that there are no predictable experiences. I went to college thinking that it would be so much harder than high school; harder, busier, frightening, and I find that it is very much like the life I knew before. The difference isn't the academics or the people; it's the mindset of the person attending. If you have the mind of a scholar, you will find yourself in a scholarly environment. If you have the mind of a jock, you will find yourself in that environment. Whatever your mind conceptualizes 'college' as, is what it will be for you. Going to college showed me that no one can tell you what life is going to be like. It is different for everyone, based on so many things that we can measure in statistics and demographics, but the biggest one is the immeasureable influence of how you percieve your reality. You can't predict what your life is going to be like, but you can always make it better for yourself by going into it with an open mind and a solid idea of what you want out of it.

Aria

I have learned a lot about myself while attending Marquette University. I truly believe college to be a “self journey” and a chance to really find yourself. Thus far, I’ve done just that. I’ve managed to be successful both in the classroom and while interning. I’ve also, recently, discovered that there is so much more to life than grades/jobs. Being happy should be my number one goal. If I’m not happy, than why do I put myself through the stress of working 20 hours a week and maintaining a 3.7 GPA? Marquette is helping me pursue my professional goals while also finding myself and having fun. This has made it extremely valuable to attend. I, unlike some of my friends in other majors, actually enjoy attending class. And I realized the importance of attending college, for the first time, this fall when I applied for an internship in the city. For it was at this time that I applied my classroom skills in the workplace and landed an incredible job. It was a great feeling and could not have been accomplished without the guidance of Marquette University and my professors.

Erin

Marquette fosters an environment where I have been able to discover my passion for teaching and work within the Milwaukee community for service learning. For service learning, I have tutored at local middle school, participated in Junior Achievement, and worked with refugees at the International Learning Center. All of these experiences have affirmed my desire to teach and increased my interest in urban education. This year I am engaged in service learning with Dorothy Social Justice Living Learning community. My service at the International Learning Center is part of the course description for Philosophy of Human Nature, a core course that I take with other members of our floor who participate in service learning at several non-profits in Milwaukee. Through my this class and service learning, I have learned the importance of dialogue and humanization within education. These ideas mainly stem from Paulo's Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which has transformed how a few the world and my role in it in relation to others. Dialogue and upholding the dignity of others is a central part of how I few my roles as a member of society and a future educator.

Erica

It has been a whirlwind of learning. At first, I thought classes and new friends. Quickly though, I joined band and writing society, the most valuable part has been being around people who inspre me to grow as a person. Be it learning how to make sure people are satisfied with their dining experience at work or getting help from the professor to make sure I have an awesome version instead of a done piece. Being in college at this high of a level means no longer being one of the "smart kids" but being an average kid who has to work and learn alongside everyone else.

Andrew

I have learned much thus far about business in general and the challenges that might be encountered upon finishing my education. Also, a since of camaraderie with my fellow classmates has been achieved, while I enetered my classroom with an expectation of being shunned considering the rivalry that is destined to ensue upon completion of our education. Finally, I have learned key specifics about the career I wish to pursue via informative teachers, assignments, and various classroom conversations. I think that the lessons listed have offered me the opportunity to make more informed decissions about what direction to take my education, they have shown me that working together towards a common goal, even against a perceived opponent, is sometimes better than struggling alone, and I can take the information that I have learned and the information that I hope to learn in the future and apply it to my career in an attempt to become the ideal employee.

William

Well, let's see, community college is legit! Cheap tuition is where is at, but my goal is to transfer to UT-Austin in the fall of 2011. So far I have gotten a good education and which will end up being very valuable when I get out in the job market. Hopefully ESPN!

Michelle

Throughout the my college experience I have gained a lot of knowledge and that does not just include learning from inside the classroom. Yes, I have refound my passion for politics by taking a variety of political classes, but the item that I think that has truly been gained for my college experience is the strength that I have found in myself. In high school I was more of a push over and a people pleaser. I still find it important to think of others, but in college I realized one has to look out for themselve and look inside and figure out what makes me me. I have learned that one needs to stand up for what they believe in because one cannot rely on another to do something for them. One cannot just think someone will do something without being guided or told. If one wants somethings done they need to do it.

Brett

Since neither of my parents went to college, I did not know what type of experience to expect. Now that I am in my second year at Marquette University, I became accustomed to a world of constant growth. Growth in my intellect and desire for knowledge, growth in my spirit and morals on how to live, and growth with my community to learn to make it better. This type of growing experience can only come from a university that desires to form students into complete people.

banesa

well i don"t have much college experience but i believe i have matured more. I"ve become a more responsable person and more organized with my every day life. I do value my time now as well. college has been very valuable to attend because it will further my carreer , and not only will it further my carreer but college is a privilage and an option it is not manditory. i will take advantage of everything college has to offer me.

Alyssa

I have learned many things from my college experiance. I've learned what it is like to study extremely hard, and how great it feels to obtain a test result you truly worked hard for. College experiance has also showed me the value of a college education in general. Being a first generation college student, my parents never had the oppertunities I will have once I graduate. Going along with that I have also realized how much money it really does cost to attened a university, and have learned the true value of a dollar. It has been extremely vaulable to me to learn these lessons as I attend school, while life moves forward each day.

Taylor

Even though I am just a freshman in my first semester of college, I have learned so much in the past three months. I have learned that I can be responsible to get to class on time, I have learned how to juggle my studying with the many volunteer activities that I want to participate in and I have learned to make life long friendships all ready. I have noticed how much my parents sacrificed for me to attend this school as we do not have enough money to pay for all the costs even though I graduated with a 4.00GPA and was my high school valedictorian. I have learned that it is so important to know my professors and truly participate in my classroom activities as it does matter to the professors if they feel the student is engaged in their class. I have loved my college career even though I was terrified to start in the honors program on a pre-medtrack! But most importantly, I have learned to value of learning so that I can become the best doctor that I can be and how important it is to know the material!

Marisa

Marquette University is a very wonderful college to attend and I'm very glad that I attended it. In class, if you approach the proffesor, most of the time they are extremely helpful to you. There are also many services that a student can use to enable him or her to do much better in school. Some of those services include counceling and tutoring. The friends you make at Marquette are most likely to be the friends you're going to stick with for the rest of your life because they are very trustworthy people that are very friendly and kind. My experience here, so far, has given me a new sight about the world. Overall the college experience so far in class and out of class is both helpful and amazing. I know that the education I'm getting here at Marquette will help me in the future. I know I will be able to do the best with the degree I obtain from Marquette because at Marquette you actually learn and know how to do things the right way. The acquaintances you make here also enable you to learn more about the world. Marquette is a great place.

Eric

I have made hundreds of new friends from college and I have had countless experiences that will never be matched. College is so valuable because it is the first taste of independence that a young adult gets. It turns a boy into a man, and a girl into a woman. Through the ups and the downs college is the best times of a persons life and can not be replaced. You gain knowledge that you have never learned before, and you learn to see things, and people in a way that you never thought about before. College is where you may get live away from your parents for the first time, get your first job, and maybe even find your first love. I have gotten all three from my college experience, and that is what I wish for anyone who chooses to attend.

Janelle

Throughout my experience in college I learned the importance of having a college degree. In this economy it is hard to find a job. But if you have a college degree you have a better chance of finding one. I have a seven year old son and I am teaching him the importance of getting a college degree so that he won?t have to struggle to support his family, like I am. At times it is hard to be a wife, mother and student all at the same time, but I am trying my best to strive to reach my goal and get my degree in order to get a better job and support my family and give them the life they deserve.

Summer

College is a whole other spectrum of education and fun in which I am priviledged to find out. It's great to find an understanding and supportive college like Stanly Community College. SCC is not only conveniently located ten minutes away from me, but it also has a wonderful Graphic Design program to further my life long goal of success. It would be wonderful to be able to complete the program of which I am interested in, which is, Associate in Applied Science.

Amanda

I always knew I would go to college. All my life, I've been a good student; the oldest child who paved the way for her younger siblings. I had no idea where I wanted to go to school when I started my search, and visited Marquette first at the request of my parents. As soon as I stepped on campus, I knew that I would end up there, despite my initial attraction to the idea of a big state school. Marquette has proved to be not only a place where I fit in, but a place where I have grown as a person. I've learned just as much outside of academic buildings as I have inside. Marquette provides so many opportunites, and I've realized that it's my own responsibility to go out and get what I want. I have met people that I feel like I've known my whole life and who I know will remain in my life forever. The bond that I feel with every member of the Marquette community, students, faculty, and alumni alike, is indescribable and I can't imagine being anywhere else. We Are Marquette!

Theresa

Since I was thirteen years old, adults labeled me as a "young adult." The first half of this title I agreed with wholeheartedly. However, the second half I found rather perturbing and ill-deserved. But after nearly two years at Marquette, I have taken more steps toward maturity, independence, and adulthood than the cumulative eighteen preceding years. The distance from home has forced me to learn to take care of myself almost entirely - something I believed utterly impossible when graduating high school. But learning to clean my laundry and bathroom is not, thankfully, the highlight of my education - Marquette has given me a working goal for my future, as I can now see myself as a working woman - as opposed to the young school girl that I have been for so many years - in either research, teaching, or manufacturing. Why, do you ask, has Marquette been valuable to attend? Marquette has given me a dream and the means to accomplish this dream. Marquette is preparing me for the rest of my life - a life I have chosen, that I am working towards, that I will live.

Coming into college I never knew what my true potential was, this wasn't because of my parents, but simply because you doesn't truly know your limits until you are able to spread your wings. I believe that this year of college at Marquette University has given me that ability. I now know a lot more about myself and know that I can handle being out in the real world with little problems. College is a whole different experience than anything else I have done before and I feel like there is no better experience to begin a persons transition into the working world. Within a short time you experience a range of diversity and education never before found in the previous institutions that you have attended. College opens doors to what life will be like once you are out on your own. You make the decisions and you are the one to feel the consequences but it is all in a controlled, safe, and important enviornment. My college experience has set me up to be a better and more professional person throughout my entire life. That is the best part though, you still have your entire life ahead.

Jasmine

I believe that diving right into a four year college is a huge wake up call for many students. It is such a new environment and learning process for each individual student, because they no longer have their parents constantly pushing them. There is a lot of temptations of partying, drinking, and late nights out that make it hard for them to obtain good grades. I feel in a way that a two year college goes by at a slower pace and allows students to develop there individual study techinques and what it will take for them to establish excellent grades. I have learned that if I want to suceed, I have to do it on my own with no help from others. I have to be serious and committed to my study of work and always makes sure that it is my number one priority. Confidence and determination is what is going to pull me through in the end.

Tehseen

Ever since I can remember, I have been told that education is everything you need to get ahead and make something of yourself. I realized what that truly means at the end of my freshman year in college. Prior to that, I was under the impression that college just involves going to classes and getting a degree so that I can get my dream job. Now I realize that college is a process just as important as what career I end up pursuing. It helps me shape the person I will be for the rest of my life. It is a tool to learn about vast subjects and I learn to apply them to my own personal life to make myself a better person. The past two years of college have been a wonderful learning experience, and I look forward to finishing it with a degree in Psychology.

Paige

Some people might claim that college is a waste of time; that we should just have certification tests and teach ourselves the information. Afterall, all we do is read books right?! In my opinion wrong! I believe that college has provided me with more than just a scholarly education. I have learned many other things including independence and social skills. Going away to college has forced me to take care of myself in a save environment where there are still people to help catch me if I fall while not holding me up. Going to school in a big city at a Jesuit university has also given me many social skills that will help me in the work force. Before college I primarily associated with people very similar to myself. Marquette however has encouraged me to get out into the community and help those less fortunate than me. This experience has provided me with the skills to interact with many different types of individuals. College has also provided me with the opportunity to experience the type of work I could be doing with my degree, before my graduation. I could not possibly gain that from a book now could I?

Angela

I would tell myself that everything happens for a reason. Things always manage to work out fine. Don't stress so much and take things more lightlly, especially in my personal life. Having a good relationship with that guy in hiigh school and leaving him behind broke my heart. He mattered so much to me and now I know that it not as significant , as important as having a good relationship with my parents. Also, that I should not falter, keep up those excellent grades like I had in HIgh School. Be proud of myself.

Michaeline

I would tell myslef to apply myself harder, and not wait to go to school, since i have have dead end jobs ,and have wasted all this time when i could be doing something i love, instead of something i hate, just to pay the bills.
