Mercyhurst University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Emily

It has to be somewhere you are comfortable. Make sure the major you're going for is offered, it has a strong curriculum and knowledgable professors and somewhere you think you will be prepared to enter the real world after you leave. It also has to be somwhere you think you can live in, whether you prefer cities/suburbs, big classes/small classes, big campus/small campus, what extracurriculars are available, etc. Make sure they all weigh into your decision so when you make your final decision you'll have no regrets about the school you chose.

Damion

Do not look for the instant gratification. Take the time to set goals and realize that these long term goals will pay off in the long run. Make time for fun activities but do not get discouraged when your friends are out partying every weekend and you?re in studying because you chose a difficult major that will pay off in the end. Also, the networking at a university is amazing. There is almost an unlimited amount of information a conversation away. Most professors are more than happy to guide you in this chapter of our lives.

Finding the right college was perhaps the best part about my applicaiton process. I can remeber driving through the big iron gates to what is now my campus and just thinking that this was the place I was supposed to be for the next four years of my life. The best advice I can give to someone looking for the right college for them is to make sure you visit the campus and then just go with your gut. You do not really get the experience of a college until you visit the campus, the department of your possible major, the cafateria and anything else that will play a major role in your life there. You need to be comfortable with your final decision because your college experience really does help you develop into the adult you will always be.

Eric

Visit as many schools as you possibly can and pick whatever school you felt the most comfortable at. If you find a school where you feel comfortable you will most likely enjoy your time at school. No matter what the other characteristics of other schools have, choose the school in which you feel like you would fit in the best.

Lynn

Before you begin the process of choosing a college, it is very important to make a list of the qualities of your ideal school. The list should include such information as the size of school, the programs of study avaliable, the location (urban, rural, east coast, etc.), and the student activities avaliable. After you have made the list, rank your criteria in order of importance. Having a list of important factors will help greatly in the search for the perfect school for you. The list will help eliminate colleges that do not fit your criteria, saving a great amount of time. Choose a handful of colleges that best represent your ideals. Once you have applied and been accepted, make sure that you choose a college that has the most possible matches to your list. Be sure that you choose a college that fits at least your top two or three criteria, if not all. Your college experience will be the most enjoyable if you attend a college that allows you to participate in the activites and studies you enjoy in a place you feel comfortable in. You will be happiest if the college you choose fits your personality.

I think that the most helpful advice about finding the right college is to make sure that you are somewhere that you are happy. This place, college, will be your home away from home for the next four years. It is an important decision to make that you are in a place that you love! It is also important to not only find a place that you will be comfortable but also a place that you can afford. You can be in a place you want to be, but might not be happy because of financial difficulty.

Amy

Students need to make the decision on their own. They need to find a place that is right for them. Students who go to a school just because their parents want them to, are making a mistake. If they don't want to go there, then they will not strive to perform their best, nor will they do what needs to be done in order to stay. Students need to find a place that feels like home - a place where they are comfortable. It will be their "home," in most cases, for the next two to four years. As far as making the most of their college experience, students need to get involved with the school. Whether they play a sport or get involved in a student activities committee, taking ownership in the school makes the college experience worthwhile. Their studies are most definitely the main reason they are there, but they need to find a place to relieve stress and enjoy their time. It goes by quickly. Before you know it, you'll be in the "real world" with real bills, which aren't fun. Make the most of your college experience while you can!

Samantha

The best piece of advice I have for someone trying to select the right college is to choose the college that best fits him/her, not the other way around. I made that mistake, and ended up wasting thousands of dollars. If you choose a college based on where your friends are going or because it's three miles from a beach, you'll end up very unhappy. Instead of finding an attractive school and trying to fit in, find the school that has everything you're looking for, and don't let anything discourage you. I would also attempt to describe to someone going to college for the first time how difficult it can be to get along with roommates. Unlike at home, where your siblings are at least raised the same, you will be in situations with people who have very different beliefs and habits than you. It is very important to accept everybody for who they are, and to keep an open mind about everything. Instead of labeling someone as "weird," instead think they are just used to different things than you. This alone will go a long way towards creating a peaceful living environment.

Tracey

The one important thing about choosing the right college is not worrying about price. Money may be tough while going through college but you have to be happy in what you are doing in order to get out of college what you should. You can not sacrifice your happiness for money issues. There will always be a way to pay for things. Parents need to just make sure that the college fits what their child wants to pursue in life and their type of attitude.

James

My advice for you is to not focus so much on the partying. Focus on what matters the most, and will benefit you throughout life. I have experienced the parties and trust me they are not worth it. Your education is a big deal...dont ruin it from partying. As for finding a school, that all depends on your major. Find the school that best fits your major, as well as being close to family because family is everything.

Jessica

The advice I would give would be that just because you went to a small high school doesn't necessarily mean that going to a small college is the best route. I went to a small high school and thought that going to a small college would be the right fit for me, I was completely wrong. So my best advice would be if you don't like people knowing your name or your face and you dont like people know all about who your dating or what you did last saturday night I would consider going to a larger school. Also, get to know the administrators as best you can because those are the people who your going to really help you when you in it. But most importantly have fun!!! There are a lot of kids that don't drink or do drugs so if you don't do any of those things, dont fret because a lot of kids on campus don't either, it's just the idiots that do you have to worry about.

Michael

Do your homework. Go and look at the schools and don't base your choose on other people's opinions.

Jacqueline

Look at the big picture. Don't worry about money until you're down to 3 or 4 schools to choose from. Visit the school! If you have a question...ask a student...they will be honest.

Kara

Take your time in finding the right college. Try and meet with the professors in your chosen field, as it will give you a good idea of what to expect the next four years. You can get a good feel on how much they care about their students in this meeting. Don't be afraid to look at different types of colleges, because you may end up liking one that you may not have expected.

Joseph

In my search for a college, I chose based on my desired major. Little did I know that my major would change three times before I settled upon one. When choosing a college, I would suggest that you actually have an advantage being as of yet undecided. If you do not know what you to major in, then there are several, perhaps more important, factors on which I suggest you focus. Are you comfortable with the school size? My school is relatively small and I enjoy it very much. However, and smaller and I would feel cramped. It is a large contributor to your comfort level on campus, and so I deem it quite important for prospective students. Another important question to ask is "Am I a liberal arts or science and math oriented student? As I stated earlier, it is not imperative to be, and is in fact better if you are not, decided in your major, because you should not allow this to affect your decision; it is comparatively insignificant. However, knowing yourself enough to decide whether you are better with words or numbers is very important. These questions will help you find the college best for you.

You are not going to college to party. Your there to get a degree and that is the most important thing. Also be sure to make lots of friends and make a huge impression on everyone you meet. Good luck

The advice I would give to students coming to college is to keep your mind open and be willing to try new things and change. College is a chance to learn and grow and find out who you are and what is important to you. In order to discover these things, you must be open to new experiences and environments. At the same time, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't forget who you are and abondon everything when you get to college. Find the balance that works for you. You may make a few mistakes but you will also find the friends that will be there through the mistakes and care about you anyway. Parents also need to be there for their kids and realize that they are going to change and be supportive of that. Go to the college that you feel is right for you. The student should make the decision not the parent. This time is for the kid to learn and grow and they should go to a college that they want to attend otherwise they will be unahappy.

Look at all areas of the college experience before you want to go. First, look at the academics and majors that the school offerse. This is probably the most important thing to consider. I would also look at the size of the school. Mercyhurst has small class sizes and I love that. You get a lot more interaction and attention. Another item to consider is the location. Do you like being in the middle of the city or something a little more private? This may not seem like a big deal, but it does affect your daily life. Finally, I would look at what sports and extracurriculars are offered. You may need to know this for scholarships and personal interests. I would recommend attending any orientations and campus visits available.

Jennifer

Take a tour, stay overnight with a current student and maybe look in on classes you could be interested in just to see if the environment feels right. Ask as many questions as you can and be as honest and upfront as possible. Ask about living conditions, weekend activites, class size, professors, food and meal plans, student life. Visit and apply to as many colleges as you can and make sure you are happy with the one you choose cause transferring is annoying!!!

Ernest

First see what kind of majors are offered. Then, i would see if it was in state or out of state. Depending on what the parent/stundent agree on then i would go from there. But going to school in the same state is a lot cheapter than going to school out of state. Whatever best fits for the student and what he/she plans on doing after school. :)

Jenea

The Best way to find the right college for a student is to get an idea of what they want to do as a career. I found that once I knew what I wanted to major in that my possibilities were large. I found a school that was close to home , the campus is small, but not too big. The faculty is absolutely wonderful and helpful in anyway that they can. Plus, what really pulled me in was the Walker School of Business. I knew that no matter what Business was going to be my field. I made the right choice, but you have to know what your future intentions are.

Anthony

Some advice i would give parents and students is to take a tour of the school and if your a student and want to go there ask about stayiong overnight and with some students that way you can get a real sense of what the school is like.

Adam

Go to college

Caitlin

Parents should allow students to make their own decisions about college because it is the student going there and not the parent. It is better to go someplace that you love rather than someplace that you will be miserable. It not important to know exactly what you want to do with your life just yet, so take your time and follow your heart.

Angela

When deciding on a college to attend, I think it's important to find a college where you will feel at ease. Check out the environment, is it hot or cold? What's the weather like, sunny or rainy or snowy? When you get bored, is there a place you can go to have fun? Do you like the classes or will you just skip them and sleep? Does the food taste good? Try to spend a day or two there and soak up the atmosphere. Do you see people around looking happy or miserable. If you have the chance go and visit the campus around finals or midterms and see how people respond to the pressure. Do they look like they're about to break or going to make it. Most of all, is there something about the place that pulls to you, that says I can make this place my home and if so you've found the place that will help you grow as a person during this new stage of your life and become a fulfilled adult.
