Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Tate

A large part of any college population is going to be asshats who clog up the system and make life miserable for anyone who doesn't fit into the asshat norm. At MSU, the asshats happen to be dumb annoying rich and middle class kids who coast through life just trying to maximize their time getting inebriated and laid. However, the asshats in the ivy league and at UofM are SMART annoying rich and upper middle class kids, who bend the rules better to destroy your spot on the curve, hide being a facade of shallow lip-service to sophistication, and generally act like whiny, self-entitled, oxygen-wasting snots. At least the asshats at MSU have the courtesy to either drop out once they flunk their weeder courses, or switch their majors to something urbane like Anthropology or Business. If you're smart, it's not too hard to avoid them.

Crystal

Although MSU students do party what college doesnt. Look at the other things yes we party but we balance it nicely with academics. MSU you some of the top academic programs in the country like business, journalism and education. Ok so there may have been riots in the past but this year what they called a "riot" was just a block party that was aggrevated by a few dumb people and the police. As for the burning couch, I have only seen one and it was last fall when my apartmen complex lost power some people thought it would be a good idea so we would have some light.

Erin

No, although a lot of students do party and drink, and many on a regular basis not all students fit that stereotype. Students drink and party at the majority of colleges and universities nationwide and although MSU is no different the amount of students actually partying and drinking at MSU is exagerated much of the time. At the begining of my freshman year I felt like I was the only person out of the 46,000 students who wasn't out partying. But later I found out that a lot of my friends weren't constant partiers either. So although it may feel like you're the only one not out partying on any given night there are actually a lot of people having non-alcoholic fun as well.

Casey

nope

Michael

The first one is correct, if that is how you choose to be a student, but there is no pressure to do so. The second one has its stories but is not a common thing. The third is shit stupid, we have extraordinary people at our school, and trust me I have my dumbass UofM friends, haha. The fourth is not true whatsoever, even though we do have a lot of greek life I would say the majority of students are not greek.

Dennis

Not entirely, yeah there is a lot of partying, but most students know when its time to settle and get things done.

jeff

sometimes i would say so with all the media and the "cedarfest" incidents. Overall i would say its pretty relaxed and a friendly environment, because there will always be people wherever you go who want to party or just cause some ruckus

Kristen

study and party hard

Amy

While we do get a little crazy, everyone has to have fun sometimes. I think, though, that MSU has a perfect balance between academics and extracurriculars. Not everyone parties, and even those who do still make time to study.

Brad

No. MSU is the perfect balance of partying and academics. While the unfortunate riots do taint our representation, most people at the last riot were not MSU students which just feeds the false stereotype. There are a lot of brilliant students here and you can judge how academic oriented we are by just going to the library on a friday night and seeing how crowded it still is. You can always find a party every weekend and balance out your classes very well. Also the pride for our teams is die-hard, unlike most of the bandwagon fans over at that little sister school who dont even know their own fight song.

Tara

Somewhat... we are large, but when you get involved in things, campus can become smaller and you can have a close group of friends and feel more comfortable.

Laura

No, only some students party and mostly only on game days. Most of the time, campus is peaceful and quiet, with lots of activities to do, ranging from board-game days to a Capella concerts. There are so many people that there is a club for just about everything and huge amounts of opportunity. I was accepted to U of M, but I went to MSU because I liked the setup of the Honors College here, the programs offered, and the campus. I also wanted to be part of research at the Cyclotron right away, and I was able to be. It was wonderful being able to control my own schedule, have flexibility, and to be some place so beautiful all of the time.

Elizabeth

Nope. The opportunity to party is certainly there, but there are many other non-alcohol related fun things to do. Every blue moon, there is a riot - which is typically caused by a crap police force and people who don't even belong to the MSu student body.

Carmen

Well, MSU does give you the opportunity to party but its up to you whether you want your career to turn out that way. And yes, the frats and such are terrible, just like what is seen on tv!

Harper

As stated above, yes. My situation is different because I was sold out. Don't trust anyone, even if they're your friends. Staying on campus may be a little rough with the presence of drugs and alcohol, but off campus is worst because they have under cover agents actually living in apartment complexes that are located off campus. To avoid a lot of fines and program costs, don't even think about selling, even if you are not a dealer and just trying to help out a friend. YOU will get slammed and even put in the slammer. I am walking away from MSU with a degree and student loan debts as well as (hopefully) a 7411 status probation completion, which takes everything off my recore. All I did and all I am doing is just spending more money. After my probation I am buying Kegs and smoking the biggest blunt.

brenlo

Every Thursday without fail there are drunken fools roaming around outside. Most nights of the week, infact, there's a party going on somewhere. Basically it's the perfect place to get an MIP. However, if you don't party, there are other people on campus who don't either, just not a whole lot of them. They're the ones who show up to an 8AM on Friday morning. Basically, yes, it is a party school, but it's not scary. If you aren't a heavy drinker, you're not alone, but if you are (or will be), you're in good company.

Sabrina

I personally don't believe so.

Kyle

We DO know how to party. EVERY campus has kids who get MIP's/in trouble with the law. EVERY campus has kids who are into different drugs. EVERY campus has dumb AND smart kids. A lot of our girls ARE hot (ha ha), but I'm sure there is a good amount of attractive and unattractive people. Cedar Fest gets a little crazy, but what large gathering of people with alcohol DOESN'T get a little crazy? Our basketball team IS good. Our football team could use some improvement, but is still okay.

Sarah

No, If all you want to do is drink and party, that life is available here, but most students find a great balance of work and play and become successful in our chosen fields of work. I am very proud to go to MSU.

Chrissy

Kind of. There are large groups of students, especially the incoming Freshman, who think college is just about partying. It is easy enough to be involved or distance yourself from this behavior. I wouldn't say there's really any peer pressure to drink, it's more of people actively seeking it out. Once you reach the senior and graduate levels (especially in the business college), most students are working really hard. They tend to party hard as well, but in a much more mature way than all the rioters seen on TV.

Renee

No, yes the school has many students but it is a great opportunity to meet new people that will be friends for life Yes it is a party school, but most students have a good balance between school work and fun

Leslie

No.

Charlie

Yes, I have been a witness to these accusations.

Ashley

If you choose to go down that path they can be. I've seen my share of people who party every night, thus fail out of school. But thats a very low percent of the total MSU population. The University offers many other things to do besides partying on the weekends and during the week, varying from free movies to free pool and bowling, concerts, craft night, and other various activities that the UAB sets up.

Allison

Yes and no. People like to have a good time at MSU and definitely know how to party, but that's not all we do at MSU! Most people take their academics very seriously. I'm proud of MSU and my fellow Spartans because most of us are extremely well rounded. We can have fun while still taking academics seriously, and taking pride in our athletics as well.

Dan

Extremely

Ang

Yes, but as with any college there are parties. There are a lot of responsible students too, but there a lot of different options!

Erin

Yes, for the most part.

Ashley

Not in the least, every school has a few students who party all the time, but MSU is no different from any other prestigous college. Many of the students who do party at MSU are not even students of the college. They leave thier own schools to come and trash mine. It's ridiculous, because now the collge that I have to graduate from has the the bad rep, especially after the infamous "Cedar Fest."

Sami

MSU is not a party school, many students focus on their studies. Many belong to the multipe colleges within campus, proving their dedication to school work. There are many students that are higher income, predominantly white, but there is also many minorities and people on the lower end of the income scale, who thrive in MSU's academia.

Terry

There are definitely those who choose to get out of control, and it's unfortunate that these select few ruin MSU's reputation as a first-class institution. The vast majority of us here are serious about what we do. We know how to have fun, but most of us are smart enough not to let it interfere with grades.

Devin

- Both of these stereotypes are inaccurate. - MSU students are extremely intelligent and study hard. Partying is done occasionally and not more than any other school. - UofM and MSU both have programs in which they are strong in. For example, UofM has no journalism program so MSU is definitely the superior choice in that category.

Matt

No, i have found the exact opposite. If you are not a driven student there are pits and cracks you can fall into however this can happen at any school in my opinion.

Erin

MSU students do know how to have fun but they are also very serious about their college career. During finals week you cannot even find a table at the numerous libraries across campus or at the union.

Erin

yes! When it comes to riots however, 2/3 of all students arrested are not from MSU. They are visiting from other colleges. So MSU students are wild.... but we are also not stupid.

Daryl

A stereotype is by definition a generalization. So to ask if these stereotypes are accurate is asking if the generalization applies to everyone and to that I would say no. Does it apply to even the majority? Certainly not. It is what the media likes to portray that causes these stereotypes.

Kristen

To an extent, yes.

Jillian

Not always, I never drink, but thats the lifestyle I chose. I think there are lots of good people at MSU too.

Allyson

1. Not ALL MSU students drink and party. As with any school, you will encounter all walks of life and life choices. 2. When was our last riot? 3. I wholly disagree! The campus is laid out very smartly! 4. YES!

Vick

No

Lydia

Although MSU students may know how to host a great party, and we might become completely irrational about our basketball games, MSU has so much more to offer. Not only does it provide an excellent education, but there are so many student groups and activities on campus that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you will be sure to find a group you will love. Partying isn't the only way to meet amazing people!

Emmerson

to a certain degree, but you get that at any college

Allison

Absolutely not. While many students are a part of the Greek system (>3000) that definitely does not include everyone. Typically the people who do go Greek enjoy drinking and partying. But again, this does not classify the entire MSU community. Most people like to go out once in a while and have a drink or two.

Amber

No, there is partying that goes on, but no more than any other school. There is much more to MSU than the party scene and many students are highly involved in other activities. We are also composed of many highly qualified students that can rival many big ten schools. Many people do not realize that there are numerous students that choose to go to MSU over other schools because of the highly esteemed programs that it offers.
