We Asked Students, What's your overall opinion of this school?

Shemariah

New Mexico Tech is an interesting university. It's rather small, but that's nice because you get used to the campus pretty quickly. The professors vary in helpfulness, but that's typical. The staff are quite helpful honestly, and are always happy to help. I don't know all that much about on-campus housing, but once again, I think it's typical for any campus. New Mexico Tech has a safe environment and is comparatively nice for a university.

New Mexico tech is affordable, but it is very hard to get help at NMT. The OSL only existas online and tutors are hard to communicate with. The library is closed and getting studying resources required filling out online forums and takes days. Students have to support each other because online classes are extremely difficult to learn from. Most of the staff chooses to work from home which means that any forms that need their signature take days to be completed. The food is overpriced and if you live on campus (required for freshman) meal plans are required. I did the math and with the cheapest meal plan, students pay more than $11 per meal. The scholarships are very helpful and easy to understand. NMT also charges students for services that are no longer available. Even if you are lucky enough to become enrolled in an in person class. The teacher can at any time decide to go online and stop going in person. In one instance. I enrolled in an in person class and when I showed up on the first day, the class ended up being an online class projected on the board for everyone to see.

Located in the small town of Socorro, New Mexico, New Mexico Tech is a great school for the astute and antisocial. There are minimal school funded sports teams but ample opportunities to advance your education aside from the classroom. It is not uncommon to become aware of students addressing Archimedes' principle or airing approbation towards the findings of Avogadro. While education is Tech's aboriginal priority, there are also small clubs such as The Adventurers' Guild and Astronomy Club that allow students to adjourn from the anxiety of school. There will be assorted instances where you question your collegiate credentials completely while in attendance; it takes absolute austerity to attain your diploma from this school, but it proves advantageous. Perfection is almost impossible while in attendance at New Mexico Tech, but that doesn't stop students from striving towards A's.

After my freshman year at New Mexico Tech (NMT), I can say I have a certain understanding of the school. It is a great school to attend and probably one of if not the best school to attend in the state of New Mexico. NMT is challenging and for good reason, they want to push all of their students to achieve greatness and make an impact in the work force and for the world. There is constant reasearch going on at the school and many students are brilliant on campus. The teachers are there for you to learn as long as the student is willing to learn. This is not a party school, you come here to learn and get an advanced education. NMT is located in the small town of Socorro, NM and is gorgeous. I am looking forward to graduating here and standing proud of where I graduated.

New Mexico Tech is an excellent school for all STEM majors. The academic culture on campus is extremely rigorous and if you don't work hard, you cannot succeed. The students tend to have an attitude of superiority compared to other schools in New Mexico, and rightfully so in many instances. We are easily the top STEM school in NM, and we are one of the top in the southwest, and we are nationally ranked as one of the best schools for the price. Math is the core of everything you do at NMT, so if you aren't willing to put in hours of work in math, you probably won't do well your first couple of semesters here. I was that student, but I'm better now. The school focuses highly on research, and because of the size, it is relatively easy to work with professors on groundbreaking (sometimes literally with EMRTC) research. Students are often recruited after graduation because of their skills and comprehension in their subject area. Despite the extreme rigor and challenge the school imposes on its students, many of us still find the time to be social both on and off campus. There are usually small parties on weekends, and there is almost always something happening on campus that you can attend. NMT is not a dry campus if you are over 21, which means you can possess and drink alcohol in the campus housing if you and everyone present is 21, unlike UNM or NMSU which don't allow alcohol or tobacco on campus. The arts aren't taken very seriously, but we still offer liberal art classes for recreation for all students. We also offer several PR classes for students looking to be physically active. The tutoring center on campus is staffed with excellent undergraduates who are able to answer nearly any question you have, and the administration is small enough that you get to know people early on. Problems are usually resolved quickly, and the school maintains a healthy relationship between the administration and its students. Like any school, it has it's ups and downs, but NMT is really what you make of it. Most of us chose to make it great.

There is an interest from the staff, professors and other students for you to succed. However there exist the intimidation that you're not good enough since everybody else is as smart and even smarter than you. This happens at all tech schools. In nmt we just all accept that its going to be hard and we will support eachother.

New Mexico Tech is a school of sciences that is known to challenge its students. The classes are fair and the class sizes are really good, exceptions being the mandatory classes such as General Chemistry and General Physics. The town that it is located in is very small and not much but local businesses and a Walmart.

Roxana

My overall experience at New Mexico Tech has been really good. We have really nice facilities and our professors are always available when we have questions. Professors seem to genuinely care about their students taking the time to make appointments to meet one on one.

Autumn

The people are really nice and want you to succeed. My largest class has 20 people all my professors know who I am and will say hi outside of class. The food in the dining hall is pretty ok and the people who run it are very nice and are getting better at working with food allergies. one of the things that I don't like about this school is that generals like calc 1 are weed out class. another thing is that they need a better counseling center on campus as most of the people I know, have some sort of mental illness and have not found help there. but overall it is a good school and they are working on improving it.

Rayna

This is a fantastic school with great instructors. The student body is diverse both ethnically and in age range. The whole town caters to students, frequently offering discounts and wi-fi is everywhere. Tech is constantly growing and expanding. I love the mineral museum on campus.

Luis

My school is like a fine dining restaurant. The students attending New Mexico Tech, are highly intelligent and skilled. The students make up the ingredients of the college. High quality ingredients are not determined by appearance, but rather by the taste and uniqueness that they add to a meal. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and add flavor to the campus. Each professor’s job is to prepare a fantastic meal and present it to the world. They add spices, herbs, and oils, in the form of books, research topics, and practical applications. When a meal is finally ready for presentation, it is sure to grab the attention of hungry companies and government corporations. New Mexico Tech is a difficult school, but the rewards from completing a degree here are excellent. I chose this school for its focus on engineering and research in new fields of renewable energy and explosives technology. I am impressed with the faculty, the intelligence of the students who attend, and the opportunities available to each student after graduation. My overall opinion for the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology is three stars from the Michelin Guide.

Kalika

New Mexico Tech is great if you know what you're getting into. It's definitely in a small town, so don't expect to have much to do nearby. Like anywhere, certain professors should be avoided at all costs. In general though, the staff and faculty are helpful and kind. I've enjoyed it so far, more than I expected to.

Brianna

I personally love this school. It is very challenging and can take a lot out of some people, but for the education, it's very worth it. There are many opportunities that Tech provides, research being a big one. The professors will always try to work with you as long as you make the effort. The campus is also fairly small and beautiful. However, Tech is located in Socorro, a very small town, so there isn't much to do outside of campus.

Louis

I truly enjoy the school, it is one that is focused on the academics, but still knows the importance of being well rounded. I am a Biomedical Sciences major. This major is fairly new to the campus and yet is still one of NMT's best. At the end of this degree, i feel i will be truly prepared to go to medical school.

Brandon

For the price and quality of education, there is not a better college in New Mexico to rival New Mexico Tech. All the students and professors are active, and Tech is serious in its efforts to help students get internships, scholarships, good grades, and jobs. There are numerous opportunities for students to develop professionally and get involved socially in the community, in clubs, or with friends. The campus is small and very beautiful; if you plan on visiting, go during the Spring semester on one of their research or other prospective-student days. You could get across campus in 8 minutes at a brisk pace. Granted, some students and people will say Socorro is boring and small, but it's because they make the choice to let it be boring and small. If you are not studying or writing lab reports, get out and explore!

Kanisha

My overall opinion of New Mexico Tech is that is it a great academic school. Everything you need to study is on campus and available almost all day. The people that work at New Mexico Tech are very friendly. The environment at the school is very secure and even has their own police station on campus. There are services available when someone is in need of help. This school is very helpful and has a lot of good characteristics to it.

John

The school itself is great for studying and for college life, but the town around the school is fairly small and a lot of students head back home on the weekends. Because many students go back home on the weekends, the campus is awesome for studying and relaxing on the weekends, since much less students are around, this can lead to some fun activities and close-knit friends groups among those that stay on the weekends.

Jasmine

As a student currently attending the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, I am very pleased overall with the school. I live on-campus, in the all girls dormitory, and it is very nice. The facility is always clean, and the staff are very welcoming. The education that is offered at Tech, is also among the best in the STEM field in the United States, and by far the best in the state. The classes are fairly small and the professors are always willing to meet with you outside of class if ever needed. Excellent school.
