What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kendra

I have gotten so much out of my first semester at New Mexico State University (NMSU) and plan to continue for the next four years. I am hoping to graduate with both a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, as well as in Business Management. Education has always been important to me throughout high school and now while attending a university. In the short time I have been here at school, I have gained many new friends that I would not have met if I had chosen not to attend college. I have also gained independence which may be one of the most important things I have learned in the past six months. I am only seventeen years old and decided to move to an entirely different state to go to college. I have had many of ups and downs, with my father having been diagnosed with colon cancer within the first two months of living away from home. I have struggled with being away from home, but knowing that this is what he wants for me. It has been a difficult semester, but I have learned a lot about how to stand on my own two feet.

College is a time when you become the person you were always meant to be. For me, college became a time when I found out just how strong of a person I was. Trials and tribulations are a part of daily life, but it wasn't until college that I realized how to deal with those situations. In essence, college was the time that I realized how to be an adult.; just like my mom always said. College is important to attend because not only did it give me the ability to finish projects and research papers that I believed previously to be overwhelming, but to find and maintain a job, pay for expenses, and continue to be happy. While these are life lessons that may be achieveable without college, I believe it is through college that I learned exactly how to prioritize and accomplish these tasks. To high school students I would say, college is a time to experiment your first year, learn from your mistakes the second year, and fight extremely hard the third and fourth year in order to graduate. Becoming an adult is accomplished through these years and is an experience you will remember forever.

Ashley

The first year of college isn't what it's all made out to be. As for someone who thought high school was easy and just a big party, college was definitley a huge wake up call. Between the professors, the coursework, extracurricular activities it's rather diffcult to balance everything out and still stay sane. From my first college semester to my second college semester I have buckeled down and relalized that getting through college classes is way more than just showing up to class. This experience has showed me that the real world is full of people that won't remember your name and they are their to do their job just like the students.; which in our case it isto study. It's valubale to attend college because this is the beginning of the rest of your life, the steps you take in college will determine the outcomes of your future. It is very critical to major in something you love, rather than majoring in something you'll hate waking up to every morning of the rest of your life.

Daniel

most things are what they seem to be, so stay on your toes and go with your gut.

Although I am only a Freshman in college, I have learned so much while being here. I grew up in a small town, so I wasn't really exposed to different people and places. While being in college I have learned so much, not only about myself, but about the world around me. So far the classes have been challenging, but have also helped me learn more about things I didn't even know. College is a truly enriching experience. I hope to do the best I can, while learning as much as I can at the same time.

The thing that i got out of my college experience is the skill to go out in the world and become my on person . And i got the opportunity to align myself with an organization that providing me with community service, promoting the program within the community, and to network with peers and alumni for career opportunities. And establish networks with peers in programs and the industry that i want a career in . And i got to experience the leadership skil will make me a better person in the job world.

Sarah

I recently returned to college after a long ten year break. My college experience at NMSU has been great. As a mom of two small children I have not been able to partake in the social experience of college but I have finally been able to complete my bachelors degree. Now I am able to focus on the future for my family. When I complete my bachelors degree in May I will be able to further my education and eventually enter the workplace market with a valuable education to back me.

Maria

I have learned some good interesting things from college and it has been valuable for me to keep attending it because I am trying to do my best I can to finish college and make my parents proud of me because I am the first in the family to attend college.

Heather

I have always taken my schooling very seriously and attending college in my home town was no exception. I feel like college has made me grow immensely as a person and has really prepared me for my "adult life". I have gained so much knowledge over the past few years thanks to my professors and extra research. It is so important to me to get as much out of this experience as possible, while gaining a better understanding of myself and what I want to do once I graduate.

Attending New Mexico State University-Main Campus has been a wonderful experience for me. Almost all of my classes are located within the Music Department, where the faculty and staff care about my progress and my future. However, my faculty advisor shuffled around the classes that I should have taken in previous semesters, so now I am set back a two semesters from student teaching. Other than being set back from graduation, I have made life long friends within the marching band and I have learned loads of little music tricks to put in my bag of goodies in my mind. I am highly active within the marching band, the pep band for basketball, the concert bands, and the NMSU flute studio. I part-take in as much musical activities as possible in order to learn and observe how the directors react and handle each situation that will someday happen to me as a Band Director of a middle school or high school.

By attending a 2-year college prior to my transfer to a four year institution, I've had been allowed to grow up and understand the need for the education. I've experienced a variety of classes and discovered my strengths and weaknesses within the academic world. I've learned that just because you're teaching doesn't mean that you are able to convey the knowledge. On the flip side, I've learned that those that have worked outside of academia and also teach more often than not, have a huge amount to offer to the student. I've learned that low paying jobs can be abundant but that you often have to work several to make ends meet and that without the degree, low paying i most likely where you continue to work. The education I've received and will continue to pursue, have helped me to see where the strength is in having a degree.

Doug

The obvious: skills and training and the specialized knowledge necessary to be productive in my field (aerospace engineering) The less obvious: networking opportunities with industry and academia The unexpected: the self-confidence gained from my ability to do the work and earn this degree.

Chemey

I have learned a lot, maybe moreso outside of the classroom. Dealing with all sorts of people, how to study to truly absorb information, and most of all how to manage my time and get things done in the most efficient way possible. I try to keep building on these skills and add new ones whenever and however I can.

Jessica

College has helped me understand the importance of prioritizing and being focused on your goals. It has its down falls at times but you learn to keep going. The values to being at school helps me to further my education and to better educate me so that I can give back to my community. I have learned that many time you’ll feel like you may not be able to make it but college is somewhere that you can always to help or some type of assistance when needed.

kelly

At one time, I felt as though I lost myself and was unimportant in todays society. My greatest job was raising my four children but I knew I could be much more then a wife and mother. Going back to school has made me feel better about myself. I appreciate the education that has been provided for me at Victor Valley College. I have accomplished and successfully passed classes I thought were impossible before. My youngest daughter was having problems understanding her physiology class last year and I was able to explain it to her in a way she could understand. I have always dreamed of becoming a registerd nurse. I have successfully passed all the required classes and begin my program August 2011. Sometimes it is hard for my to believe that I am actually fulfilling my dream. I am 47-years old, sometimes I feel as though I am too old to be going back to college. A good friend of mine once said, "You are going to be 50-years old regarless. You might as well be 50-years old at something you have dreamed about; then to be 50-years old of regretting not ever tring."

Shannon

So far as a freshmen I have recieved a lot of help from college peers and professors. That is one important thing getting to know people on campus and have a guide to help you out with things on campus or with studies that you do not know. There is a lot of things to take advantage of while you are in college, it is way different from high school so students should not have a excuse for anything. There are plenty of tutoring services, mentors, you could even have your own personal tutor to help you out with studies, plus there are programs who are willing to help you with almost anything and everything so take advantage and get to know your surroundings that is what I have been doing and it is a great help. Especially I thank the people that actually take time out of there doings to help someone else.

College is unlike any other educational experience. Students are completely responsible for themselves and their actions. In college, one is not only taught about their major but also things that they can use in their everyday life. This experience prepares you for the world, if you haven’t already been exposed to it. You learn to be independent, you learn the how to truly be responsible, you learn how to be wise with your money and you learn how to be a good, ethical professional within you field of interest. That is why college has so far been vaulable to attend and I look forward to all the new things that I will learn as I go further into my education.

Gaelen

I have become much more independent than I ever have been. I have grown more bold and outgoing as I have been forced to make my own decisions. As a result, I have really blossomed at college personality-wise. Going to college has confirmed my core values and beliefs and has allowed me to expand my horizons. I have excelled beyond what I could have imagined. I could not have excelled without the help of the people at New Mexico State. From my professors, to the friends that I have met, to the writing lab and tutoring centers, everyone has been there every step of my college experience to help me succeed and to be the best that I can be. This has certainly been one of the best and most beneficial experiences of my life and I can honestly say that I am right where I am supposed to be. I would not trade this college experience for the world.

Teria

My college experience, though very short, has been life changing. Being on campus and being surrounded by various backgrounds and cultures was very refreshing. I enjoy hearing different languages and the influences other college students are to me. Seeing their determination strengthened mine. I have had a rough life and college life, even though it is a community college, opened my mind around many new ideas and aware of universal issues that are much bigger than any one person. I have gained hope for myself and my children. Believeing in yourself is the most valuable thing that has been gained as far as I am concerned.

Sydney

I've started to learn how to truely be myself and how to live on my own and make my own decisions. Its been extremely valuable to attend college because I have to say this is the happiest I've been in a really long time. I love that by coming to school I've started to learn who I really am and what I like and what I don't. It has also helped me learn what I want to do with my life, and how I want to live my life. Its a great expeirence for those who are ready for it.

ramon

well attending college is a big thing for me and also for my family because education is better than just having a random job that dont pay good and probably gonna kill yourself at it for the little pay. another reason i attend college is because ive had surgery on my wrist and i only can have a light duty job and theres hardly any money coming in for me and its tiring so my only choice is to attend college and become some one greater in life.

Valerie

I've learned through my college experience that life in general is a struggle. You really have to learn how to balance out and keep good track of your priorities or you'll fall behind in classes, social life, and sleep. The first half of my first semester was very difficult for me, but it taught me that I have to look out for myself now because I'm not a child anymore. Attending college has opened up a new spectrum of life that lays ALL responsibillities on me. I don't have mom and dad to tell me when to go to bed, when to eat, to do my homework, and go to class. I have to do it on my own now. It's very rewarding when I know I'm succeeding because it came from my own effort. The grades are so much more valuable because I attained them on my own and that I wanted to do well. I'm becoming my own person and living my life with my own motivations.

Andrea

Multiculturalism. I have been exposed to alot of people from different backgrouds and social classes which as a future educator will help me to contribute and promote a more just society.

Dominic

Responsibility is what I have gained the most out of taking college classes. I have learned that it is up to me to get up in the morning, get to class and do my homework. Mom and dad aren't there to wake me up in the morning. The schools no longer have bells to remind me to get to class on time. Professors don't call my parents if I don't do my school work. No, I'm on my own. Even though it doesn't seem like much, it is a lot of responsibility I and my other students must gain as we leave our coddled life of high school. At first, I hated it and missed having someone to wake me up and get me to school and pester me about my studies. But now I understand that the responsibility college is teaching me is phasing me into the real world where I'll be responsible for my wife and children, car payments, house payments, the bills and putting food on the table. I'm much more responsible than I was in high school and I can thank college for that.

Melissa

Everyone in this campus is really nice and I was given the liberty to explore my major options

Brittany

My college experience has been a needed one. I quit high school half way through my sophomore year and instead went to work for two years to help out my mother. In April of 2008 my mother passed away. The following few months I bounced between houses. FInally I got my own apartment and my GED later that year. I started college right away. Attending college allowed me to keep busy during a difficult time. I pushed myself to succeed in my classes and many of my teachers were right there to support me. It has been a long two years, but I am receiving my associates degree in English this December. I will also be transferring to a four year university this January. College helped me through the worst time of my life. During the course of taking classes I have gained my social life back and that has helped as well. Going to college was one of the best decisions I have made.

Metzli

The college experience has been one of the most amazing things that happened to me in the world. I appreciate the opportunity given to me to attend college. I am doing my best to be successful in all my classes, because I know this opportunity is not available to many. I always try to achieve my goals, but unfortunately my parents cannot help me much financially. So, I give my best effort to achieve good grades and get scholarships to continue my studies, to hopefully graduate and start my life with a great job. Although college experience has been a great opportunity, it also has been a challenge to me because of my language. My first language is Spanish, so I need a double effort to achieve good grades during my semesters. I know that soon I will improve English, and I will become a better student than I already am.

Ruby

I have received not only the academic value from the university but the abiltiy to work with a diverse population of people in a comfortable setting where people share and value each others opinions. By interchanging thoughts and ideas with such a diverse group I was able to challenge, change, and add to my own ideas and knowledge.

Lisa

I have gained a broader perspective on life and the people in this world. It has been valuable to me to attend so far because ou become enlightened to the oppression and struggle of the past and appreciate what you have more.

Sharla

I have gotten life experience and valueable knowledege. Going away to college taught me life skills because I had to work and go to school at the same time. I lived off campus also, so I had to shop for everday things, cook, clean, and etc. Time management and responsibility were also skills that I gained. I had to take classes that I thought were a complete waste of time, but now that knowledege has came in very handy. The last thing that I got out of my college experience is that when there seems like there is no hope it always works out. I learned that I can handle anything that comes my way and how strong I really am. That is is priceless.

Adriane

Not to be cliche, but the thing I will appreciate the most from my college experience is the friendship I recieved. I met so many new people my first year of college and I realized that the world is so much bigger than my high school of less than 200 people. I also learned to be dependent upon myself. I was not completely independent, but I was a lot of the time. It was up to me to turn in my work, study for my tests, and actually attend class. I was so used to my parents being there to push me to wake up in the morning and go to school. It was definitely hard for me at first, but it was just one of those things that I had to get used to. I realize more and more that in order for me to have a nice, successful future, I have to finish college. That is why I decided to stay in school and try to graduate with my class of 2013. I believe I am ready now, more than ever, to become independent from my parents and do my part to get a good education.

Amanda

Though my college experience I have gained a sense of independence and have become more self sufficient. I have become more knowledgeable about how to get things done on time and in an orderly fashion because I don?t have anyone there to remind me when assignments are due. I attended really small school called Texico High School and going to a university was a big change for me but that change was for the good. I think that attending college has made me a more mature adult. Attending a college that is almost six hours away from home has been very good experience. I have had to learn to do things on my own and talk to complete strangers, pay bills, and manage money ;which before coming to college I had trouble doing. I think that having an experience like college will only continue to help me grow as an individual and I would recommend to anyone that has doubts about going to college to just try it in hopes that they will have the same experience I had.

Diego

From my college experience I have gotten many things. I have met many interesting people. I have learned many analytical, verbal, and writing skills. My confidence and communication skills have increased. Everything that I am today is because of my family, friends and the university I attended. Everything that I have learned in my college career has allowed me to get jobs and be able to be a better citizen. I also had the opportunity to travel to Spain to study abroad. It was a very exciting and learning experience. My college experience also allowed me to learn about other cultures. I met people from around the world. I do not regret attending the university I went to.

Craig

The most valuable thing that I have learned since attending college is how to carry myself as a self-sufficient adult. Being that I live off campus, there has been a greater amount of responsibilities that I have had to adopt: paying rent, electricity, etc. As valuable as the actual education that I am getting from NMSU is, the life lessons I've learned outside of campus are what really stand out from my freshman year.

Derek

I have discovered many strengths and weaknesses which would have remained hidden to me had I not started my post secondary education. The number of friends I have made as well as instructors who support my growth will prove invaluable later in life when I have earned my degree. I enjoy being associated with like minded indiviuals who share my goal of progressing to ever increasing levels of academia.

Amanda

I have gained a brighter future. I have had experiences that will stay with me forever. It is in essence the greatest decision of my life. It has been the most profound confidence, knowledge building journey.

Marissa

What I've gained so far are skills that I'll need later in life. Especially when it comes to socializing. I've come out of my shy shell some more and everyday I'm breaking through because of my friends. I've also learned that I can do little things like attend Tough Enough To Wear Pink games and show that everyone can do something to help with cahnges. It's been valuable to attend NMSU because it's a good distance away from my family and it's letting me be independent and giving me the oppurtunity to figure things out for myself.

Tracy

I have been able to learn at my own pace and my instructors were great. They pushed me to my limits and beyond and made me realize that I can do anything I put my mind to. I am a first generation college graduate. Continuing my education has given me an edge that I wouldn't have if I didn't attend school. My kids are proud of me for continuing my education and they are the reason that I do. I want to lead them by example. I would like for them to attend college and gain that experience that they wouldn't get otherwise.

Ruben

I have leanred to go forward no matter what the challenge is. The worst answer anyone can give you is no, but this is just their opinion. Oportunities are always waiting around every corner, but most people aren't willing to take any time away from their straight path. We have to be willing to go down roads that we haven't planned and haven't been charted and take every experience as a lesson learned. Every path has its own pot of gold at the end if your willing to accept that not all gold shines brilliantly.

Rodrigo

It has taken me 25 years to finally get my BA and I think that being accepted into the MA program is the best thing that could have happened to me.

Ekaterina

What I have gotten out of college experience is how important it is to go to college and how much you can succeed in life with college under your belt. For me it has been valuable to attend college because it is going to help me to get further in my career, meet my goals and open many more options of what i can do in the career field that I choose. I have realized that without college i cannot get anyhwere and be succesful as i would like to be. Not only am I learning as i go through college but it makes me see how much of the information learned in college is used out in the real worl.d. College leads me to succes and it takes patience and time , the only person stands between me and succes is myself. I am striving for success so i will be patient and take my time to reach my goal.

Clara

College is something i been hearing since middle school, now being a college student has more value to it. College is not easy, it's preparing me for what i want to do with my life, it's feeding me the skills for my future. Being a college student means giving it 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} every day in every class. College has made me mature and start taking action in so many responsabilities. I make many sacrifices to be in college, not seeing my family as much is the hardes, but that just makes me want to push harder to accomplish something in life.

Mario

Since I have been in college now for a school I truly know what it is to be a college student. Back when I was in high school, I had a lot of friends and well I guess you can say that I would rely on them to get me through the day but when on the first day of college I knew that college was not all about friends but I had gone from talking to just about everybody at my high school to talking to very few. Attending college is very valuable because since we are in a recession I have come to the conclusion you will not be able to do anything in this world without a college degree and not only that you will also have to major into something where there will always be a job. For example, criminal justice and nursing majors will always have a job because crime will never stop and people won't stop getting sick.

Stephen

I have gotten the experience to see that I really miss highschool and I sometimes wish I could go back, But I realize now that its okay to grow up. I want to be a successfull human being when Im older and I never want to look back thinking I should have stayed in college. Im staying in school and becoming a successfull buisness man.

Rosanna

College has helped me grow from a child into a women. I've had a really hard life, I've always had obstacles to face even as a child. College gave me something to look forward to it grounded me and helped me find my passion for learning and costume history. I would love to continue learning about something I love and be a role model for other low income hispanic girls trying to make it. I want to show my little sister that no matter what you going through you can make it if you just work hard and believe in yourself. College has helped me change for the better and it's opened my eyes to a different and better world out there. College is important to me, and I've grown to love this University and all the professors that work here. College has taken me closer to making my dream a reality! I value my college education and I wish I will be able to continue it!

kwamesha

The one thing Im getting out of my college experience is that I have a chance to provide my son with a better life, not only that i am going to be able to get out of money bond that im in. Attending school has change my out look on life it has made me change in many was. Was like if i want more in life i have to do more to get it i have to set goals and stick to them i have to mange my time an money wishly. It has mad me more detrame to finsh school knowing that i will have a better life not only for me but for my son. The reason it is so valuable for me to attend school is that i will have more education. more education for the job martket.

Yuriko

I have always been overprotected, I have learned so much the hard way. People lie and you can't trust any one. I learned that people die from actually drinking. I thought people only got drunk in movies. You learn what qulities to look for in people. Educationaly, I have learned that college is much more demanding than high school, and that profesors are not going to let you get away with much. You have to go out and find what you are looking for because you will not get things handed to you just like that. I have learned so much more in two years of college than in my twelve years of pre-college schooling.

Alberto

One of the most important experience in collage is learning, but learning goes beyond the classroom. When you wake up in the morning to go to school, whitout anyone there to tell you what to do. When you ask for help to your friends or profesors. Learning in collage is no just learn about your mayor. You end up larning about life itself. However, how much you learn is determinated by how much effort you pur into your collage expirirence.

Andrea

Learn how to multi task! I would also tell myself to learn how to manage my time because it is important especially when you are taking 18 credit hours. Keep your grades up and fill out all the scholarships you possibly can because money usually gets a little low. I would also reccomend getting used to eating ramen noodles for dinner! As I mentioned the most important thing I would tell myself is too keep my grade up because it is really importnant especially if you want to live a really sucessfull life. REACH FOR YOUR DREAM AND DONT BE SCARED TO FAIL. You can be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever it may be as long as you keep your head in the books. Education is key to success.

Alexandra

I would tell myself to branch out, not be shy, and make a lot of friends. I wouldn't let my past self make the same mistakes and lose a great friend. I would tell myself to explore the campus and the town. I would prepare my past self to study hard and apply to more scholarships and encourage my past self to learn more about the opportunities available to me, so that I can study abroad and not struggle financially. I would tell myself to get a job sooner, rather than later, to prepare myself financially. I would tell my past self to take things easy and not stress out, because college will be the best years of my life.
