I suggest finding a college that is not only a nice learning environment, but one that will fit the student?s personal beliefs and goals.

Deanna

First i have to say the student and the parent need to fiugure out whats the reason for going to college., if its for they right reason, pick out schools that interest you and have what you think you want to be.

Shanise

In order to get the best out of your college experience you must be able to maintain a clear balance between work and play. There will be a lot of activities going on on weekdays, but it's up to the student to be able to decide what is more important. Also, don't get sucked into the partying atmosphere. There will be tons of parties, but make sure you are going to ones that are SAFE! Being able to determine the safety of your surroundings is very important. Sometimes college students end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the results of that are never good. Basically, the main things that make college great are new friends, good grades, and SAFE parties.

Adrienne

Finding the right college is very important. When trying to find the right college, several things must be considered including location, price, comfort level, class size, learning and teaching style, and surrounding resources. For example, parents and students want to make sure that the college they choose is close to food, public transportation, banks, etc. Once the right school is chosen, its important to maximize the college experience. For instance, work should be your main focus, but not your only focus. Getting too stressed out or bogged down by doing work is not good or helpful, so students should make sure that between classes and work that they get involved with social activities on campus. Not only is this a good way to relieve stress, but its a great way to network and meet new people.

Freddie

Ask the college what can they offer you. What recreational programs and leisure activities are available; for too many students get into trouble just because they have nothing to do.

Charise

I would advise that students pick the college that best suits their NEEDS first-- and then their wants. If the college is providing ample financial aid, has the perfect program of study, and provides other important tools and opportunities for success, then the student should choose that college. Also, once getting into college and starting classes, it is very important that a student have good time management skills. Most students who are well-rounded and are very active on their campus tend to have good time management skills. This is important because it helps students balance their school work with their social and extracurricular activities effectively, so that they may have a enriching, well-rounded experience. It is also important that students have a social life. Many students come to school and all they do is study. It is good to study, but also take time for yourself and for others so that you may unwind from your studies and have a good time as well. Balance is very important in attending college. If a student lacks balance throughout his/her college experience, he/she may be constantly overwhelmed, and may not be as successful.

I think it is essential that parents spend time with their children while they are very young. During the formative years, ages two through 13, it was important for me to know that my parents understood what I liked, what I did not like, why I liked it, why I did not like it, and how much I like what I liked. Then I felt confident that whenever I succeeded or failed, they understood my limitations and when I simply did my best. In turn, when I failed or did not do as well as I wanted in the areas I liked or in the areas that were of a particular challege to me early in my student career, I never felt like they would look down on me. I always knew that they knew when I had done my best. That is what helps parents to develop confidence in students--a confidence that will take them into the college world on their own where they can know themselves and be comfortable with who they are. That eventually, leads students and parents to finding the right college with the right academic major and the right surroundings. Learn your child early!

Karchauna

Make sure its your child's choice. Don't push them into a school that you don't want to attend. This is where your going to be going for the next four years and make sure that this is the right school for you.

Kamara

I think parent and student should go to the school and walk around. The parents should take advantage of the meet and greet process. Ask lots of questions about security and safety measures.

Radhiya

The advice that I would give is that students should go to a college where they know that they picked it out themselves and that they feel comfortable in. Students should not go to a school just because their friends are going there or their parents went there. Also, when you get to college, enjoy everything you can about your undergraduate career. Make sure to network with everybody that you can think of. Mainly, try to network with people that works in the adminstration building, the brainwork of the university. Networking with people from that building will get you far.

Robert

The advice I would give to students would be to find a colloge to suit your needs. This includes campus and class size, academia, valued or favorited activities, types of programs and styles of teaching if they learn differently than others. I would also say that there are many oppurtunities such as grants and scholarships and activities, you just have to do your part to at least look for them. Since it is college not everything will just be handed to you, so be proactive and independant. That being said I'm not saying to take for granted companionship. Networking as well as making friends is very helpful and spirit lifting.

Adrian

Live the college life, which includes being active and involved in campus activities. Next research, research, reasearch, choose the college that you think is right for you. Finally and most importantly practice time management skills early, before you enter school.

Heather

The best advice that I could give would be to choose your college based on your major first and then your interests. Alot of students base their decision on their family decisions or the tuition but if you do that you may find yourself unhappy at the college you attend. If you do choose a college with higher tuition you should start searching for available scholarships as soon as you can so that when you do get to the college of your choice you will not have to worry about your financial obligations.

Lydia

Well that all depends on what your career is going to be. If you were like me and have no idea try and visit different campuses and go on tours. Think about the type of enviornment you want to be around and also the different activities that there are on campus. If you have a specific major that you want to go to school for then try and find a school that has a major prgram and focuses and that particular subject. Never turn down a school because you think that you can't afford to go, that's what financial aid and scholarships are for. College is nothing like high school where its ok to be just passing. You need to go to college with the atitude of achieving your short and long term goals. You get out what you put in. If you work hard then oppurtunities will present themselves. Also be an individual and not a follower. Try and hangout with the right crowd of people, the ones that have study sessions and work hard. But there is nothing wrong with having some fun. Just learn how to manage your time wisely.

Shantell

My advice to parents and students is that they pick the college that best suits the child attending. As far as nuturing, campus size, and things of that nature. Trust me, they all play a factor.

cashmere

I would tell parents to have the thier children pick thier own colleges, that they think is right for them. They should choose a school that is right for them. A school thats fits their learning style. Also to have fun once in while, enjoying making friends and helping out in college.

Sheree

Do your research. In doing your research make sure you understand the college size, location and class size.

Danielle

First of all, figure out what path you want to take and how. Find a school that not only offers your major but fits you as a person. It will take time to see all that a school may offer but in the end it will be worth it. In order to make the most of your time spent in college, get out and try new things. There is more fun and learning then you could ever dream of. Finally, stick to your guns. If you want to be a broadcaster, don't change because it feels like it's getting harder by the year. Do all you can to get ahead and you will suprise yourself in the end.

Krystal

My advice to parents and/or students would be to first research many diverse schools. Research and visit a few schools that you know you would never want to attend. Once you get to the campus you never know, you might actually find something about the school and what it offers that you might like and benefit from. Next thing to do once you do research and have visited the schools, narrow down your search and apply for those schools as soon as possible. Most schools have an early decision deadline meaning that you can know if you get accepted to a college months before you graduate from high school. That is a good thing because it allows you to plan early and decide how to pay the school's expenses. Make the most out of your college experience by joining clubs that are related to you major and by attending social events like football games, rap sessions, and greek programs.

Janika

I would advice other student to find the right college based upon what their personal interest is. Do not go somewhere based upon your relationship status with a certain person, college is for continuing education and you will not always be sure that the person you are going to college for will be there for you in the future. The college experience is basically what you can make out of it own your own. Becareful with the people in which you interact with and with the same aspect, have fun. Remember that every grade counts in the end and the end product will always be because of you.

Robert

Make sure that your child or you will ACTUALLY be comfortable here for the next couple of years because its harder to transition to a new school once you have already attended another. Credits get taken away, all the monies that you will be spending have to be encorporated and you have to ask yourself "Is this where i really want to be?"

Alicia

Do your research first and early, about 10th grade, Visit the campuses together and ask to see the dorm rooms. Also, get to know what the campus is about if it is local by attending some of the events and games. Once that is done decide based off your morals what is best for you.

Aleah

Research is the most important thing in looking for a college to attend. Knowing if they have your major is very important. Residence, population, enivornment and diversity are just as important. I attend Norfolk State University because I wasn't brought up with a lot of African American kids. I wanted to experience my cultere and be able to grasp what I have been missing. Finding the school of your dreams is very important, but if you get stirred the wrong way, transferring is still an option. The most important thing about attending college is the experience. In college you will meet life-long friends, you get to network and have life-long memories. However, college is more than building a social life, we go to college to better oursleves and learn.

Margarita

I would like to tell prosepctive students to research the colleges they are considering. They should also consider the tuition and scholarships. Really look inside of yourself and discover your passion and your dreams and goals in life. Then make the best decision based on your personality, dreams, and financial status. However, do not let money be the main factor. You can always get scholarships or financial aid. Once you get into the college that compliments you, make sure you do as much as possible. Do not let fear get in your way. You will never be able to tap into the full you unless you "just do it." So far as class work, work with students to complete work and study. They will motivate you at times hen you can't motivate yourself. And you have to take the extra steps to learn the material. You will have to apply more time and you will have to go out of your way to get the teachers help.As far as your social life, just do as many activites as possible . If you do those things I promise you will have a great time.

whitney

to find the right college is to visit and spend a couple of days there and see how the class setting is and how the social life is. to make most of your college life is to meet new people, get involved in school activities.

Sheaylah

I would say taking your finances into consideration is very important. you don't want to come out of school with a bunch of loans to have to take care of, especially if you have plans to continue your education after undergrad. It is important to attend a school that will offer enough scholarships and financial aid to cover your tuition and expenses, or find outside scholarships to cover whatever financial aide does not. I was fortunate enough to have enough financial aide and enough scholarships to where i was basically getting PAID to go to school. There is no greater feeling than receiving a refund check! I would also say campus participation is very important to the college experience. this is how you meet new people and make friends for life! it also looks great on your grad school application and shows that you were well rounded.

Jerna

When choosing a college I should always be a long thought out decision. You should alway choose the college that best fits what type of school you are looking for, you should never choose a school just because of friends are attending. As for the experience, you should have fun and enjoy the experience but remember you are in school and that is the main priority....my moto is "Asmuch as you have fun you should study twice as hard"

Kwame

Research your school very carefully before enrolling.

jessica

Do the best you can in high school so that financial aid will not be a problem. Go for the schools that offer the most benefits for you and what you want for your future. Study different colleges and dont just accept the first one that accepts you. Good luck!!!

Ashley

When looking for the right college, consider what kind of person you are; your personality. The most effective way to make a decision is to visit the college or university during the school year. Pay close attention to the enviornment and the people there; take time out to talk to a current students and availiable professors. Become active in at least one etra-curricular activity, and speak to other club memebers as well. Dine in the cafeteria , visit residence halls and classes to get a feel of what you may or may not like. Note to the parents: go online and check the school's demographics. After considering your options, you should know exactly what school is right for you!

Courtney

When finding the right college a person needs to felel lik its almost like a second home; it almost like something is pulling you to be there and want to enjoy all that a university has to give you, not what you can give them.

Thomas

College is a big choice, you should choose a school that helps you to find your passion. In addition the professors should be helpful, the students should also be interested in other students success and the overall college experience should be somewhat like a journey with different options to be explored.
