North Carolina State University at Raleigh Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Justin

I would describe the student population of NCSU to be a true melting pot. Diversity at our school extends beyond appearances and lifestyles because there is such a mixture of ideals, beliefs, and practices amongst all of the students. To be honest, with such a variety of students, sometimes tensions can arise; however, I have personally always felt safe on my campus and I know that my administration has a no-nonsense approach to all forms of discrimination. In actuality, I appreciate the blend of students here at NC State because it provides another area of growth as students are taught how to be more culturally competent and ready for an always growing world.

NC State University has a very comfortable and down-to-earth student culture and population. There is no expectation to be dressed-up on a day-to-day basis and students can be seen all across campus at all times of the day. NC State University students are extremely aware of the current political, economic, and cultural issues and often have awareness events and speakers addressing issues across campus for students to get involved. I think NCSU has many different cultures present. Being in the Spanish major, I got the opportunity to interact with many native speakers, which was so helpful. Overall, I think the student body is very accepting of different racial, religious, socio-economic groups, etc. that are present on campus. The only students that I think would feel out of place there are UNC students. :) There is kind of a variety of what students wear to class. Some people feel the need to always look really nice when they go to class. I was more so the type of person to throw on jeans and a t-shirt or sweatpants just because I'd much prefer to be comfortable. From a political standpoint, it seems like State students are pretty well divided. There are a lot of liberals and a lot of conservatives and many students are very active and speak out about their political standpoints. Students definitely start talking about how much they'll earn when they get closer to graduation.

Caitlin

Being a part of the Wolfpack is an honor for all members. Our student body is very diverse, giving students the chance to learn about a variety of different lifestyles and opinions. All different kinds of students interact & often become friends after meeting in classes or even in their dorms. If you're yourself and nothing else, you'll fit in great as a part of the pack!

Cam

I don't think anyone would feel out of place here but for the most part everyone has their clicks . Being part of the fraternity system here means I deal with mostly upper-class and like 99{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} white men and women.

Chris

I have not personally experience any blatant racial problems. However, they are there. Based on experience, I would say that any minority student would feel a level of displacement at NCSU. However, due to the vast amount of cultural organizations, they can always find a safehaven. During the summer, students wear flip fops, shorts, tanks, sundresses, t-shirt and jeans. In the fall, students wear flip flops, jeans and t-shirt. During the spring, its a combination of both summer and fall, depending on the weather. There are four tables of student in the dining hall: Table I- White Males, One Black Male, Table II-Black Girls, Table III: Black Boys, One White boy, Table IV: White Boys & Girls. Most students from NCSU are from North Carolina. The only students that are politically aware and active are student that are in Student Government and other Political Organizations on campus.

alicia

There's often someone out in the brickyard preaching about something or other, and it can be pretty amusing listening to students arguing with them. Very diverse campus, don't think anyone would feel out of place, people are pretty chill, everyone wears bummy clothes to class (no dressing up all the time like Chapel Hill ;-)), most people are willing to talk and make lots of friends! There's a surprising number of students putting themselves through college, but many more depending on their parents. Most students seem to be from somewhere in NC.

Owen

There are so many opportunities to meet people of diverse religions, backgrounds, races, and groups on NCSU's campus. NCSU is a big supporter of diversity and culture. I honestly believe that no student would feel out of place on NCSU's campus. That is what makes NCSU so great. The emphasis NCSU puts on diversity means any student can feel welcome and can find their place. Every student is different in some way. The cliques that existed in high school are no longer prevalent once you take a look around NCSU. Although most students are from various places around the United States, there are also many people from foreign countries that decide to attend NC State. I have met people from Egypt, Pakistan, Lebanon, Trinidad, and many other places just during my freshman year. Also, because of NCSU's big financial aid program, people of every kind of financial background are present.

Carey

Most students are from North Carolina. A good majority are from Raleigh or Charlotte, since those are the bigger cities.

Erin

At State there is every type of person. There is always a place to "fit in." The Brickyard is the place where many people voice their opinions and advertise. There is the occasional "crazy preacher" that tells everyone they are going to hell but usually everyone is pretty open-minded.

Steven

The student body here is very family-like with a relaxed atmosphere, despite being the largest college in the state. Unless someone is late, there's a good chance that they'd be willing to stop and talk. Politically, NC State is one of the rare conservative-leaning colleges. We have more moderates and republicans than most other universities, but there is still plenty of liberal activity as well.
